Fundraiser for Endometriosis

An evening of fundraising is being held this March 23rd, at 6pm at the Lion Quays Hotel and Spa in Weston Rhyn. The evening will be to raise money for a local charity. Menstrual Health Project is a UK patient-led charity founded in 2022 by two endometriosis sufferers, Anna Cooper and Gabz Pearson. The charity aims to provide practical support for those suffering with menstrual health concerns and conditions through educational tools and resources. Menstrual Health Project’s vision is to remove the stigma surrounding menstrual health, so that those who are impacted feel better informed, heard and empowered. As a charity, they work towards reducing stigma by educating people about these conditions, but also empowering others to advocate for themselves in order to access the correct care. Endometriosis is a systematic inflammatory condition that impacts 1 in 10 women and those assigned

female at birth in the UK. It is a debilitating disease that can impact a person’s most vital organs, often leading to organ damage or loss. Historically, we have not spoken about conditions like endometriosis through fear of judgement or shame. Both Anna and Gabz have sadly lived with endometriosis for over 10 years. They have unfortunately incurred the repercussions of the disease in the shape of organ damage, organ loss, infertility, chemical and surgical menopause, chronic pain and a severe impact to their menstrual health from a condition which currently has no

cure. They both feel there needs to be improved and better education. Understanding and early intervention is key when it comes to endometriosis. The fundraising event will be a blend of inspirational speakers, independent business stands, music by local DJ: Weekesey, live performance by UK country artist Bobbie-Jo, activities for children, a raffle with a selection of amazing prices, panel discussion with medical professionals and much more. Menstrual Health Project would like to invite all members of the community to please join them for a night of fun, food and fundraising. The event will be to raise vital funds for the organisation to carry out the work they do in educational and workplace settings. Along with a portion of the proceeds being donated to fund vital endometriosis research being carried out by Dr Barbara Guinn and her team of researchers at the University of Hull. They are developing a urine test which may help detect endometriosis. Tickets: £25 per person, £70 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) For more information, get in touch by visiting www. menstrualhealthproject.org.uk or email hello@menstrualhealthproject.org.uk

Saddle up to support Derwen Charity Are you looking for a new challenge for 2024? Derwen College Charity is signing up charity fundraisers for a February challenge that is already gaining momentum. Derwen Charity – which benefits young adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at Derwen College – is counting down towards its third annual 24-hour Spinathon which runs from 2–3 February 2024. Whether you’re looking to get fitter, or want to support this local charity, the College is asking the community to back the event which has become a firm favourite on the charity’s fundraising calendar. The Spinathon sees students and staff from the specialist further education college, in Gobowen, take part in the gruelling spin session which starts at 10.00am on Friday 2 February, carries on through the night, to the “finish line” at 10.00am on Saturday. Money raised will be used to support people with SEND (both students and long-term resident clients) to enjoy extra experiences and opportunities to enhance their wellbeing. Originally launched by sports coordinators Steve Evans and Sian Thomas, the Spinathon sees fundraisers pedal for a phenomenal 24 hours. This year, Steve will be pedalling for the full 24 hours, while Sian will be running themed spin classes at intervals through the day and night. They are joined on the journey by students, staff and supporters who all pledge to raise money through their own individual challenges, whether that be 30 minutes or the full 24-hour shift. Upcoming Derwen Charity events for 2024 also include a 10k fun run and walk on 23 March, and Derwen Fete weekend from 25–26 May. To find out more about how to support Derwen Charity, go to www.derwen.ac.uk/charity or email Megan at megan.charman@derwen.ac.uk Pictured: Performing Arts students with Performing Arts teacher Opal Trevor, Sports & Fitness Coordinators Sian Thomas and Steve Evans, and Community Fundraiser and Events Organiser Megan Charman.

Park Hall Farm to Welcome Lambs

Every year, 16 million ewes give birth in the UK and at Park Hall Countryside Experience you have the chance to witness a lamb being born at their Lambing Live event. Park Hall will host the lambing event during the February half term, from February 10th – 18th. “At Lambing Live, you can come and visit the lambs in our indoor barn, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a live birth,” said Richard Powell, joint owner-director at Park Hall. Tickets include entry to the whole farm attraction where you can also see the ponies, pigs, chickens, goats, a cow, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and even two tortoises. “Families can also enjoy exploring the whole farm at their leisure. They can stroke the rabbits and guinea pigs, see the pigs racing, take a tractor ride, use the zip wire, take a plunge on the demon drop slide, and explore our educational fun zones. What’s more, we have lots of play areas inside and outside, so the rain doesn’t stop play here at Park Hall!” Tickets are £12.95 online at www.parkhallfarm.co.uk or £14.95 on the door.

RJAH Friends fund advanced machine to support patient safety The League of Friends to The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH), have funded an advanced diagnostic tool, which will be used in the Pre-Operative Department. The Dopplex Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) machine is designed to assess blood flow in the leg and detect any abnormalities in the circulatory system. The device, which is non-invasive, will help give staff at the Oswestrybased hospital insight into the health of the blood circulatory system, enabling them to diagnose and manage conditions at an early stage. This machine will assist in the early detection of peripheral vascular disease – where blood circulation is reduced to a body part, other than the brain or heart, due to a narrowed or blocked vessel. This affects 20% of people who are over 60 years old. Below: Mr Nilesh Makwana, Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon; Victoria Sugden, League of Friends Charity Director; and Ruth Carle, Pre-Operative Assessment Unit Nurse Practitioner; with the Dopplex ABI machine.

Runners World Fame for Oswestry

Alan Lewis of Adrenaline Sporting Events had a huge surprise in January when he realised Oswestry’s 10K run had been recognised by an internationally renowned sports magazine. Oswestry’s 10K has made ‘The best 10K races to enter in 2024’ in Runner’s World magazine. To emphasise how important this is for our town’s race, there are only 15 UK-based races on the list chosen from regions across the country. Oswestry features alongside: London, Brighton, Sheffield, Chester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Swansea to name a few. We asked Alan what he thinks this could mean for Oswestry. “We hope the listing will have a positive impact on the race for future years and help bring even more people to Oswestry and Shropshire. “It’s amazing news for everyone attached to the event including all of our amazing volunteers, sponsors and stakeholders. It shows what an amazing job everyone does at the event. 10K runs are a great length for experienced runners and those who are beginners and want to face a new challenge. If you fancy signing up to the Oswestry 10K scheduled for 13 October, visit www.adrenalinesportingevents.co.uk. 6

a lovely area we live in, which is confirmed by local tourism reporting an increase in over-night stays and a rise in rail journeys to the county. This can only be enhanced by Oswestry’s recent award of ‘Coach Friendly’ status. Work is well underway on the English Walls toilets to make them fully accesable with a ‘Changing Places‘ facility. The Council now owns Oswestry‘s Grade 1 listed building Llwyd Mansion and work has started to preserve it and bring it back to life. We’re progressing the acquisition of The Centre, to expand opportunities for our young people. We‘ve attracted funding to improve our historic market and will soon be seeking an artist to produce a mural on the building. New businesses have opened with more on the way, so we hope they will be well supported. I‘m over half way through my mayoral year and time has flown. I‘ve met many great people and learnt about the huge variety of organisations in the town, but I am keen to meet more, so do get in touch. Before the year began I was impressed by voluntary groups and individuals who do so much in the community, but as time has passed I’m now in awe of the commitment so many give. I aim to hold a celebration of volunteering before I finish.

Community business

Habitat create products with Designs in Mind Back in November, the design team from homeware brand Habitat, came to Oswestry for a workshop with the community interest company, Designs in Mind. The two companies formed a collaborative partnership, which produced an exclusive collection of products that have been on sale in a number of Sainsbury’s stores across the UK. The products featured creative contributions from some of the individuals who attend workshops at Designs in Mind. Based on Cross Street in Oswestry, the social enterprise helps people living with mental health challenges. Workshops are held three times a week and are focused on bringing out the creative side of attendees who have all been referred via their GP’s, a hospital or clinic in relation to mental health challenges. Sitting in the workshop upstairs, you could feel the creative artistry around you with paintbrushes, paper and materials stacked across shelves. As the workshop began, led by Andrew Tanner (Head of Design at Habitat) and Habitat designers Sarah

Above, left to right: Workshop with Habitat & Designs in Mind; Products made as part of collaborations Below, left: Products in the studio

and Holly, a new angle of thinking began regarding typographic wall art, how impactful sayings are and how carefully selected typography can support the feel of a word. After a round of sharing our favourite sayings, which instinctively brought out some regional favourites from across the country, attendees got to work planning their size and layout of words. The Habitat team provided inspiration through a short video and some clever examples that felt very familiar through advertising. Jo Davis, Founder and Artist of Designs in Mind said, “Our collaboration with Habitat has fitted well with Designs in Mind’s ethos of ‘making with purpose’. We’re incredibly proud that we’ve been able to translate our ethos to objects that we all use in our homes. Making and designing is a constant process of decision making, it is an absorbing and healing process outside the questions and struggles we might be facing in our lives. We like to think that every product is injected with a small dose of the happiness and mindfulness that our members channelled in our studio during the design process.” During the workshop, Andrew Tanner surprised the attendees with a box of some of the products that were a result of the collaboration. “Habitat were able to generate some good publicity for the products,

with them appearing in Ideal Home, Fabulous and Homestyle magazines and being stocked by Argos. We want to help start more projects and possibly work together again.” Designs in Mind has been here in Oswestry some 20 years, but it was only around 8 years ago that the CIC became known as this. They have worked on many projects over the years, and now they are becoming more involved with design commissions for national homeware and fabric companies. In 2022, they collaborated with Scion (Sandersons), who produced a number of homeware products using their designs based on the theme ‘Happy Home’. More recently in 2022, Designs in Mind moved in to the shop on Cross Street and made it their base. It is most certainly a community at Designs in Mind and the work they create is both unique and beautiful. Their team of volunteers and staff bring the skills needed to guide workshop attendees with learning new arts and a whole range of medium can be explored. One attendee spoke of how important Designs in Mind is to them. “I used to come a long time ago when it was called Project Group. I decided to come back because I loved it so much,” Sue told us. Mullein, also known as VERBASCUM, is a tall plant found on waste ground, roadside verges and gardens. It is a natural expectorant, inflammation reliever and pain reducer with antimicrobial and antiviral properties. The leaves, flowers and roots can be used for a variety of remedies.

Respiratory System

As a natural expectorant, irritation and inflammation reducer, mullein leaves can be used to help treat coughs, bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory problems in pets (and their humans!). It is recommended to help dogs with kennel cough, as well as pets with allergies.

The Ears

Mullein’s flowering tops can help soothe the pain of an ear ache, can help treat mild ear infections and ear mites. According to Herbs for Pets by Gregory L Tilford, mullein flowers serve as good ear mite fighters because they are antiparasitic and antibacterial.

Making Mullein Oil

Pack mullein leaves and flowers in a glass jar and cover with olive oil. For increased antibiotic effectiveness, you can add a clove or two of garlic per pint of oil. Let the mixture sit for two to three weeks. Strain and apply several drops of the warmed oil into the ear canal.

The Skin

Mullein leaves in poultice form can be used as a skin soother and antimicrobial agent for irritations, wounds, burns and bug bites. NB. Make sure when applying mullein to the skin, to test in a small area first as mullein can be irritating for some skin types.

How to Give Mullein

Make a strong mullein leaf tea. For dogs, give 10 ml per 30 pounds of body weight twice daily until symptoms improve. Alternatively, offer your pet dry/fresh leaves to sniff, roll in, and play with as an opportunity for them to self heal. Be cautious as ingestion may upset the stomach. If symptoms persist, please consult your vet.

Llanerchydol Hall in February and Pen-Y-Llan Hall on 8 March and with additional local events planned at new and exciting locations throughout 2024.” The equipment Jamie and Joanni regularly use are K2 Meters, Cat Balls (Motion Activated), Ouija Boards, Rem-pods, Rem-Pod Teddy Bear, S-B7 Spirit Box, Dowsing Rods, Table Tipping, EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomena). They strongly encourage guests to use their own senses and they are welcome to bring their own equipment. Refreshments are provided throughout the night and guests’ safety is always pf paramount importance. Paranormal Vault is a professional research company, and they take the ghost hunts very seriously to ensure guest experience is at its best.

Jamie and Joanni

In early 2023, Jamie Jones and Joanni McNeil set-up and created Paranormal Vault - a paranormal experience company. Both Jamie and Joanni live together in Oswestry and met whilst both doing what they love best - Paranormal Investigations. Together, they have over 6 years’ experience in researching the paranormal, throughout the whole of the UK, across a variety of locations, experiencing some of the best paranormal encounters. This became a regular occurrence whilst being part of and working for a paranormal company which has previously aired on television. The company was created to bring the best of paranormal research to the everyday person, designed to thrill, entice and intrigue minds alike. “We have a maximum of 15 guests attending any event which allows for us to provide intimate paranormal events so that senses can be at the most optimum with minimum interference 16

from other persons or external factors - promoting only the best investigations into the paranormal field,” explains Jamie. Paranormal Vault was developed based on their previous experiences with other paranormal companies, and one thing they found which greatly affected the ghost hunts, was having large groups of guests in attendance. So, as a company they decided to keep guest numbers to a maximum of 15, no matter how large the location, to minimise noise pollution and keep guest experience at its optimum. Talking about what they have planned, Joanni said, “We try to provide a paranormal experience locally within Shropshire, to provide an intimate experience for guests and to help support local businesses. However, we also plan to expand nationally in the future. In 2023, we held two successful paranormal events at the Fox Inn, Oswestry and experienced very positive feedback. We also have a planned event at

Llanerchydol Hall, Welshpool Saturday 17 February Pen-Y-Llan Hall, Ruabon, Wrexham – Friday 8 March Merley House, Wimborne Friday 19 April All locations are considered so get in touch if you are interested in hosting an event with Paranormal Vault. Private Events are offered on a bespoke booking basis (no maximum number of guests) - this can include your next team building work event. Jamie and Joanni look forward to seeing you at their next Paranormal Event. Keep your passion alive for the Paranormal and follow Paranormal Vault on YouTube, where Jamie and Joanni travel the UK, investigating haunted locations and seeking paranormal evidence. Casual elegance The shape for 2024 is boxy, but this doesn’t mean frumpy. It’s a style on its own, so teaming a boxy top half with a contrasting skirt or trouser, will bring about balance. It’s actually rather elegant and flattering for any age and shape. Just remember, you only need one key piece, and it will flow with your wardrobe.

North Shropshire College has long been a cornerstone of educational excellence, and its recent refurbishments underscore its commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities for students pursuing diverse fields. The College, situated at the heart of the community, has unveiled revamped spaces that cater to the evolving needs of its students, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to education. One of the notable updates has been the transformation of the hairdressing and beauty salons. These spaces have now been re-imagined to provide both students and paying customers a professional salon environment. Treatments for hair and beauty can be booked by members of the public at very competitive rates. The refurbishment goes beyond a mere aesthetic upgrade; it signifies a dedication to providing students with an environment that mirrors the professional settings they will encounter in their careers. Equipped with the latest equipment and technologies, the salons at North Shropshire College empower students to hone their skills and develop a competitive edge in the beauty and hairdressing industry. Complementing this makeover are the newly established plumbing and electrical workshops. In recognising the importance of hands-on experience in technical fields, the College has invested in creating modern spaces that emulate real-world working conditions. These workshops not only serve as classrooms but also as laboratories where students can experiment, troubleshoot, and apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. The commitment to nurturing skilled trades is evident in the thoughtful design and equipping of these workshops, positioning North Shropshire College as a leader in technical education. Further expanding its commitment to science education, the College has invested in a new cuttingedge science lab. This facility is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, providing a space where theoretical concepts come to life through hands-on experiments. The state-of-the-art equipment and resources in the lab empower students to explore and understand scientific principles in a dynamic and interactive environment. The addition of this facility reinforces North Shropshire College’s dedication to fostering excellence in science education and preparing students for the challenges of a rapidly advancing world. 24

Beyond its physical transformations, North Shropshire College actively engages with the community through its comprehensive outreach programmes. Taster days, a hallmark of the College’s outreach initiatives, provide school students with a first-hand experience of college life. These events allow students to explore the newly refurbished facilities, interact with faculty, and gain insights into the courses offered. Taster days serve as a bridge between high school and college, helping students make informed decisions about their academic and professional paths. College is very different from school. The taster days and open events allow students to see for themselves the difference and the exciting opportunities going to college offers. However, once the student starts, the commitment doesn’t end there. North Shropshire College recognises the importance of on-going support for its students. The College has implemented robust assistance programmes for students, parents, and career advisors. This includes academic guidance, counselling services, and resources to facilitate a smooth transition into college life. The holistic approach ensures that students feel supported not only in their academic endeavours but also in their personal and professional development. Furthermore, North Shropshire College understands the pivotal role parents and career advisors play in shaping students’ futures. Regular communication channels, workshops, and informational sessions are in place to keep everyone informed about the College’s offerings, admission processes, and support mechanisms. In conclusion, North Shropshire College’s recent refurbishments exemplify its commitment to providing an exceptional learning environment. The revamped beauty and hairdressing salons, state-of-the-art plumbing and electrical workshops, and the cutting-edge science lab showcase the College’s dedication to staying at the forefront of education. Moreover, through taster days and ongoing support initiatives, the College ensures that students, parents, and career advisors are integral partners in the educational journey. North Shropshire College stands not just as an institution of learning but as a beacon of innovation and support in the community. Open days allow you to see for yourself the wide range of other subjects taught. Applications for September 2024 are now open. Local authors’ latest book A former Royal Air Force technician who became an acknowledged air safety management specialist, teaching the subject to aircraft operators around the world, Steve Bond, is a Freeman of the City of London and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Now living in the Oswestry area with his wife Heather, who ran an antiques business in the town for many years, and also has an aviation background through hot air ballooning, Steve is an established author of aviation history books, his 25th title having just been published. The new work (co-authored with Heather) is a coffee table style book ‘Flying with the Navy’, with over 200 high quality and previously unseen photographs of aircraft, ships, and people of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Fleet Air Arm (FAA). Somehow, the FAA remains little known amongst the public at large. This is surprising for an armed service with such an illustrious history – and its story is still being written today.

FWTN launch 27 October: Steve Bond, Heather Bond, Rear Admiral Tom Cunningham, Commander Mike Norman

During five years of research for Steve’s four volume ‘Fleet Air Arm Boys’ book series, covering the post-war FAA, more than 200 former personnel – aircrew, engineers, aircraft handlers and many more, both serving and retired - not only contributed a huge quantity of stories, but they also sent many thousands of photographs, largely taken by themselves, and mostly never previously seen. Very early on it was Heather’s idea that what was needed was a stand-alone photograph-heavy book, showing off many of these stunning photos to best effect by giving them up to a full page with high quality reproduction. The response to the idea from the

FAA veterans was immediate and very enthusiastic. Whereas the ‘Boys’ books – many ladies are in there too - are all about fascinating previously untold stories supported by photos, here you have, from 80 contributors, great photos supported by explanations of their background and the occasional short supporting story. The opportunity has also been taken to expand the coverage to cover the whole history from the start of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) before the First World War to today’s new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers, illustrating the changing equipment and roles of the service. Coverage is not limited to just a large representative group of aircraft, but also includes many ships and air stations. Most importantly, air and ground crew are highlighted throughout, both at work and at play, and those who lost their lives are suitably remembered. The book was launched in the Navy Wings hangar at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton on 27 October 2023, with a book signing attended by FAA veterans. Although not stocked locally, ‘Flying with the Navy’ can be ordered from Navy Wings (who benefit from every copy they sell to help keep their historic aircraft flying) and Amazon. BOOK REVIEW EDITOR’S CHOICE

OF THE MONTH

Tucker & Dale vs Evil (15) AVAILABLE ON ITVX OR TO RENT OR BUY. Horror comedy is a difficult thing to get right, for every hit like ‘Zombieland’ there’s a ‘Scary Movie’, or 4. Luckily, itvX is currently streaming one of the very best examples ever, 2010’s warm and funny ‘Tucker & Dale vs Evil’. Films like ‘Deliverance’ have made mileage from holidaying city dwellers being terrorised by uncultured rural folk, the genius of ‘Tucker & Dale…’ is the way it flips the picture on its head. Here our two titular friends are hillbillies planning on a weekend renovating a log cabin in the American countryside, a series of misunderstandings with some visiting college campers gets out of control as each party mistakenly assumes the others are psychopaths set on murdering them. This film is a genuine comic delight, the mix of (really not very) horror and comedy is just right and the filmmakers delight in lampooning horror conventions with chainsaws, woodchippers and grave diggings appearing in ways you wouldn’t expect. The two leads, Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk (Dodgeball, and many a Disney voiceover) have comic chops aplenty and with a justscary-enough-but-not-too-scary slapstick vibe, ‘Tucker & Dale…’ hits a sweet spot that both horror fans and people like me will love. The thought of watching an actual horror film fills me with, well, horror, but I loved this film and hope you will too. Like this? Try ‘Anna & The Apocalypse’ (2017, available to rent or stream). A zombie invasion occurs in a sleepy Scottish town, forcing a group of schoolfriends to fight their way to freedom. Also, it’s a musical and it’s set at Christmas. It may be a little rough around the edges, but this low budget British film is bloody, funny, and occasionally both. By Michael Hudson 32

Oakhurst – The story of a country house BY JOHN PRYCEJONES Here is the latest in a series of books about the history of Oswestry, written by local author John Pryce-Jones. We are treated to the story behind Oakhurst Hall, the Victorian country house on the outskirts of Oswestry. The author introduces the Venables family who had Oakhurst built in 1853/54 and lived there through to the Second World War. The house which preceded Oakhurst – known as Mount Sion and built in 1774, also features. We find out about Oakhurst’s role in the second world war, who used it and what it was used for. The publication is priced £4.95. Proceeds from the sale of the booklet will be donated to the Mayor of Oswestry’s annual charity. Available from Oswestry Tourist Information Centre based at Castle View (next to The Library). POETRY

Full Moon over the Dee (a proposal) BY DAVE ANDREWS The yellow ball of heaven’s snooker table Shining on the Dee and clearly seen, I’d pocket you right now if I was able And leave you with my lover on the green. The final black of night is now all over, I have you in my sights and right on cue, I will not balk at this because, my lover, You’re worth the whole world, no, you’re worth two! I’ll find a cushion, take a nap and rest, Then hope at least to get a lucky kiss, You know, my lover, I will do my best, Perhaps I’ll foul but there will be no miss. Sticky Toffee Pudding What’s not to love about sticky toffee pudding? And this version has the added appeal of being cooked in a slow cooker – giving you maximum flavour with minimum fuss! Serves 6 | Takes 8 hours on low

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

125g butter 250g dates, stoned 125ml boiling water 1 tsp vanilla extract 275g brown sugar 325ml double cream 5 tbsp treacle 2 large eggs, beaten 200g self-raising flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

To serve: • Clotted cream, custard or ice cream

Clare Andrews, bestselling author of The Ultimate Air Fryer Cookbook, is back with more budget-friendly, time-saving and delicious meals, in The Ultimate Slow Cooker Cookbook, published by Penguin Michael Joseph, priced at £20, with photography by Danielle Woods

METHOD 1. Preheat your slow cooker on low for 10 minutes and make sure your pudding bowl fits into your slow cooker when the lid is closed. Grease your bowl with 1 tbsp of the butter and line with baking paper. 2. Put the dates in a heatproof bowl. Cover with the boiling water and leave to soak for 30 minutes. 3. Put the vanilla extract, 80g of the sugar, the cream, half the treacle and half the butter into a pan. Cook over a medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Carefully turn up the heat and cook for 3 more minutes. Whisk the mixture and add a pinch of salt. Pour about a third of the mixture into your lined bowl, leaving the rest to reheat later for your sauce. 4. Remove the dates from the bowl, reserving the water, and roughly chop. In a mixing bowl, stir together the remaining sugar, treacle and butter with the beaten eggs. Fold in the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ¼ tsp of salt, the dates and the soaking water. Spoon into the pudding bowl, leaving about a 1cm gap at the top. Cover with a greased layer of baking paper and a layer of tin foil, then make a central cut to allow the steam to escape and tie with some string. 5. Place the bowl in your slow cooker. Boil the kettle and pour in the water to fill halfway up the side of the bowl. Close the lid of the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours. 6. Remove the pudding from your slow cooker and turn out onto a serving plate. Reheat the remaining sauce to pour over your pudding. Serve with clotted cream, custard or ice cream. Oswestry life

Business

Florist makes a bee line for new shop We have a new florist in town and it’s the Pollen Pantry, based on Bailey Street in Oswestry. Run by owner Hannah, the floristry on offer brings a modern flavour to beautiful bouquets. Hannah is clearly skilled in the art and offers fresh flower deliveries, dried and silk arrangements from wall installations to vases and a lot more. Talking about her love for the job, Hannah says, “I have wanted to be a florist since choosing my college courses, but I chose my ‘A’ Levels and ended up working in childcare for a long time. “Early on in the covid pandemic, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and finally train as a florist. I enrolled at Yale in Wrexham and completed my level 2 and 3, achieving distinction stars in both. During this, I also had the opportunity to compete in World Skills twice and the Inter Flora student competition. “I set up and ran my business via social media to start with, then opened a stall at the Oswestry indoor market during the summer. When the shop on Bailey Street became available, it was a bit of fate because it had actually been my Mum’s baby shop over 20 years ago! At the same time, my youngest child started fulltime school, so it all lined up perfectly and was a great opportunity.” Hannah says her customers are amazing and other florists in town have been very supportive. “My customers vary, from wedding couples already booked in for this year, to my regulars who like to treat themselves every so often and those who like to send a thoughtful gift.”

The Pollen Pantry’s most popular products are the gift bouquets. Set at different prices according to size, they make gifting a bit easier, especially when an expert is putting it together for you! As you may well know, florists are kept very busy during the summer months with weddings. But as well as catering for weddings, Hannah also holds seasonal workshops and provides arrangements for events and funerals. Her favourite products are her flower wraps, which let her inject some of her floristry flair. “The flower wraps can be made for any budget so are very popular. Also, a firm favourite are collection gift bouquets in water and those are priced from £20. People quite often like to provide a bouquet in water as a gift and I can arrange delivery for those to make it extra special.” It’s coming up to Valentine’s Day, so don’t forget to place your orders early! If you order before 1st February, Hannah will include complimentary chocolate with it. Yum! To place an order or get in touch pop in or call 07596 095 715 or email pollenpantry@gmail.com. It’s that time of year when the children seem to be bringing all the bugs back from school. Spring is around the corner, but we are still in the grips of winter and those pesky viruses and germs are still plaguing our houses. Parenting when you are ill is so difficult – you can’t call in sick and have a duvet day! As a mum, supporting my immune system is something I focus on at this time of year. First and foremost, prioritize a colourful plate. Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables, as they are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits and bell peppers, is renowned for its immune-boosting properties. Likewise, beta-carotene in carrots and sweet potatoes supports the production of infection-fighting cells. Don’t overlook the power of lean proteins. Foods such as poultry, fish, and legumes, provide amino acids crucial for immune cell function. Additionally, ensure an adequate intake of zinc, found in foods like nuts, seeds, and whole grains, as it aids in the development and function of immune cells. Embrace healthy fats, such as those found in avocados, olive oil, and fatty fish. These fats contribute to the production of anti-inflammatory compounds, creating an environment that supports immune response. Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically, play a crucial role in enhancing the activity of white blood cells. Probiotics are another key player in immune health. Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut, promoting a balanced microbiome. A healthy gut microbiota is linked to improved immune function, as it regulates the body’s inflammatory response. Lastly, don’t forget the important role that Vitamin D plays in supporting the immune system. Sardines, salmon, tuna, eggs and mushrooms all contain some vitamin D but it’s difficult to get enough from food alone. As the sun isn’t strong enough at this time of year to help us make vitamin D, the NHS recommends that everyone takes a Vitamin D supplement during the winter.

Prevention is better than cure

Desiderius Erasmus 1500 AD

Despite our title, screening tests for diseases are a relatively new idea – just approaching the 100-year anniversary of cancer testing in 2028. Now there are a whole host of screening tests that start testing us before we are born and continue throughout our lives. How effective each test is can vary, but they mean you are likely to live longer. Some of these tests are very simple: being weighed, having your blood pressure taken, having a blood test. Some are a bit yucky: stool samples for bowel cancer screening. Some are a bit invasive: smear tests, breast screening. Despite this about two thirds of us generally take advantage of these tests – but what about the 1 in 3 people who don’t? Are some of these people ostriches? They would rather bury their head in the sand than face finding out about a possibly uncomfortable health issue. NHS screening tests are approved by a committee of experts only when they can agree

on the overall health benefits of the test. This is why private providers offer more tests – their extra tests are not considered proven enough for the NHS. Some patients are frightened by the concept of medical intervention, some simply do not believe in screening and perhaps trust fate, others believe in a range of conspiracy theories around the profiteering of pharmaceutical companies or the medical profession itself. Thankfully we live in a country that believes in personal autonomy so people are allowed their own beliefs – even when the science is against them! The NHS offers routine health checks form the age of 40. How many people attend these? Sadly, it is only about 40%. So roughly 2 out of every 3 of us do not take advantage of these checks and run a higher risk of high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, kidney disease and dementia – a risk that could be significantly reduced by screening. When did you last attend?

STAY SAFE ONLINE - THE BIG DIGITAL SWITCHOVER WHICH? WARN OF SCAM PHONE CALLS saying landlines will be cut off and asking for payments. Fraudsters are taking advantage of the change and are ringing people saying they need to provide their bank details to ensure their phone will not be disconnected – or asking for payments for digital conversion kits. The move is totally free of charge and landlines will not be cut off without prior notification. Everyone who is affected will be entitled to free digital handsets and adapters for emergency contact devices – there is no charge. WHAT IS THE BIG DIGITAL SWITCHOVER? All traditional phone landlines in the UK will be switched off by 2025. The analogue, copper wire phone network will stop working and any other systems connected to your phone line will stop working too. Digital landlines use an internet connection to

make and receive calls, so you will need an internet connection at home to use the new landline digital system. If you don’t have a broadband connection, your network provider should supply you with a connection to support the new digital landline system – FREE OF CHARGE. You should be able to keep your current phone number – and your current handset. However, in the event of a power cut, unlike the analogue system which worked without power, your digital phone will not work unless it has a battery-backup. If you are dependent on your landline phone for health reasons, your telephone provider must offer you a ‘resilience solution’ to make sure you can make emergency calls during a power cut. This could be a mobile phone, or a battery-backup and it should be provided free of charge. Systems connected to your phone like alarms, telecare systems and CCTV will need to be updated – contact your provider for advice. Sign up for Which? How to avoid problems and pitfalls in family law cases Honesty is always the best policy when it comes to any legal agreement or divorce proceedings - otherwise you risk serious trouble further down the line. That’s the advice from experts at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Oswestry, who say being upfront about your financial circumstances right from the start is absolutely key. Caroline Yorke, of Lanyon Bowdler’s family law team, says: “Full and frank disclosure of your financial situation is essential at the start of any legal proceedings. “If there is something you are worried about, discuss it with your lawyer so you can plan accordingly, and more often than not there are steps which can be taken to manage the issues which you believe are a problem. “Trying to hide information, in my experience, has a nasty habit of coming back and tripping you up further down the line. “If it transpires that an agreement was made on the

back of information which you knew was false, then there is the potential of criminal proceedings being brought against you, or at the very least the agreement can potentially be set aside.” Caroline says another common problem which arises in divorce proceedings is when the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ has helped with the purchase of a couple’s property. “When parents have helped out with the purchase of any asset, the details of who gave what are often not clearly defined,” she says. “It’s really important to consider what might happen if the relationship breaks down in the future. Do the parents need to get separate legal advice about the help they are giving to the couple? Do they need to enter into specific loan agreements, or alter their wills to reflect the situation? “I think it’s so important to anticipate those problems at an early stage, because within divorce proceedings, despite no ill will or malice being involved, the lack of clarity can cause real stress and heartache.” For more advice, call Lanyon Bowdler on 01691 652241 or visit www.lblaw.co.uk

Autumn Statement Round Up On 22 November the Government announced their plans for the UK economy within their Annual Autumn Statement. Whilst there were no alterations to the effective income tax and corporation tax rates there were some alterations in respect to National Insurance and reliefs for companies. Firstly, from April 2024 the mandatory Class 2 National Insurance contribution for self-employed individuals earning over £12,570 will be abolished. However, those earning under £12,570 will still be able to make voluntary contributions to ensure they have enough National Insurance years towards their state pension. This will allow self-employed individuals to save approximately £180 per year. Following this, the rate of Class 4 National Insurance is due to reduce from a rate of 9% to 8% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, and employee National Insurance is due to reduce by 2% which will take effect from 6 January 2024. Secondly, state pensions are due to increase by 8.5% from April 2024. This means an individual who received £10,000 state pension in the 23/24 tax year will receive £10,850 in the tax year 24/25. The National Minimum and Living Wage will increase to £11.44/hour from 1 April 2024 for all workers 21 and over.

HMRC are looking to rewrite the guidance on claiming training costs for self-employed individuals to ensure they are up to date with their required skills and maintaining pace within their profession. They are also looking to simplify Making Tax Digital (“MTD”) for individuals and landlords. Reforms are due to be released in relation to those claiming benefits/universal credit and pensions are due to be reformed to allow individuals to have one collective pension pot. For companies, Research and Development Tax relief will combine both the ‘Research and Development Expenditure Credit’, and the ‘Small and Medium Enterprises Scheme’ to introduce one collective scheme combining the most beneficial aspects of both schemes. Businesses within the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors will receive 75% relief for business rates in the 2024/25 tax year up to a cap of £110,000.

With clever design ideas, even the tiniest kitchen can be both stylish and practical. Small kitchens can be extremely efficient, and because you won’t have room for lots of cupboards, worktop space and large areas of flooring, you should be able to afford quality items.

A functional floorplan

The first principle of design is the ‘work triangle’ – the movement between the cooker, sink and fridge. Each zone should be self-contained, with its own storage and worktop space, but easy to move between. In a double galley, keep the sink and cooker on the same side, with the fridge opposite. In a single galley, you can’t create a triangle, so aim to have tall cupboards at one end, then the hob nearby, and the maximum amount of worktop space between the hob and the sink, with the dishwasher (if there’s room) next to the sink at the other end.

The kitchen/diner

It’s great to have somewhere to eat and drink. Fold-down tables can work, or there may be room for a small dining table – an extensible one is worth considering. Create a permanent breakfast bar with an ‘L’ shape at the end of a run of worktop, with high stools that tuck underneath. Extra-deep wall cabinets that reach right to the ceiling create plenty of storage space. Hampton kitchen in Grove, Smile Kitchens. smilekitchens.com.

Cupboards – from floor to ceiling

If possible, try to fit wall cupboards that reach the ceiling. The highest areas can be used for storing infrequently needed items, but you’ll need some means of access – perhaps a folding step stool hung on the back of the door. Consider cupboards – wall or base – that are deeper than usual, as the increased storage and worktop space will be beneficial (though bespoke deep worktops will cost extra). Open shelves or wall racks help open the room up but don’t let them become cluttered. Plan base units that work for what they need to store – a series of shallow drawers may work better than cabinets with hinged doors, for example. Add internal fittings to help organisation, from spice racks to pan-lid holders. For corner cupboards, look at the available special mechanisms that allow access to everything at the back.

Hide everything efficiently, with a built-in bottle rack and microwave, worktop, deep drawers, shelves and spice racks in the double doors. The Durham butler’s pantry in Heather Green, LochAnna Kitchens. lochannakitchens.co.uk.

The illusion of space

Try to create a sense of space – there are plenty of tricks. For example, stick to plain cabinet and drawer fronts with either no handles or sleek, discreet ones. Base cabinets on legs or with recessed plinths show more floor, which makes a room feel larger. Pale colours are bright and airy, while glossy surfaces, metallic and mirrored areas reflect light. Check that windows are not partially obscured and let in plenty of natural light. Larger-than-average floor tiles or boards can make the floor seem bigger. Make sure that artificial lighting is well-designed. | Oswestry life

Detached Bungalow in Town 40 High Fawr Avenue, Oswestry

Make moving with Monks the resolution you keep in 2024 The Monks team have been having fun with New Year resolutions this month, trying to beat some of those bad habits and choosing some positive changes for the year ahead. We caught up with Judy Bourne and Patricia Baila, co-owners and Directors, to find out more. “I’m doing Dry January to give myself a healthy start to 2024. But I’m also conscious of supporting my favourite bars and restaurants at this time of year, so I’m still going out but ordering alcohol-free cocktails!” laughs Judy. “My goal is to plan ahead with more family time booked into my diary,” says Patricia, perhaps influenced by her recent trip to her native Spain. “Making time for friends and family is so important to our work-life balance,” she adds. Improving our mental health has been top of the resolution lists for a few years now, but a new 2024 survey from Forbes Health shows our focus has changed to physical fitness with 48% citing as one of their goals. Improving our diets and learning new skills both feature highly (32% and 9%), as does improving our finances (38%). While the Monks team can’t help you with all your resolutions, there is one area they excel in. If you have ‘moving house’ on your list for 2024, Monks can make it happen - whether you are thinking of selling, buying or renting. With superior local knowledge and unparalleled service levels, Monks is a leading Estate and Letting Agent across Shropshire. From prominent offices in Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Wem, they offer extended business hours to support clients from 8am – 8pm Monday to Friday, Saturdays 9am-4pm and Sundays 11am-2pm. Statistics show that only 16% of people keep their resolutions after six months. Monks are confident however that every challenge can be achieved. So, rest easy you’ve got all year to make that move - just start by giving Monks a call today!

This excellent 3-bedroom bungalow offers spacious accommodation which must be viewed to be fully appreciated. Interiors by Stephanie Dhillon

CirCus show There have been a lot of circus styled homeware products available lately, and what better way to create a timeless magical space that evokes nostalgia and excitement than with a retro circus theme. Red and white stripes on ceilings, walls and fabrics; motifs of leaping lions, fire rings, and circus typography; harlequin patterns, tassels and bunting, all make for a surreal and strong atmosphere. Teamed all together for an energetic space, or in moderation with hints in the details, the circus theme performs best for kids rooms and playrooms but is also great inspiration for a garden party.

Gardening

Gardening myths or magic? Gardening tips have been handed down for generations, but times move on, and opinions, fashions and practices can change. How do you know which guidance is wise? 1 Washing-up liquid is a great way to kill aphids

3 Digging is good for the soil

Spraying plant pests with a weak solution of washing-up liquid does tend to work. It’s a good idea to spray the plants with clean water shortly afterwards to minimise the risk of harm to wildlife. Does it harm plants? Detergents containing surfactants do present a real risk of harm to plants, known as phytotoxicity. Some plants are more sensitive than others, particularly sweet peas, cherries, plums, hawthorns and tomatoes. It can remove the protective natural oils and waxy surface from the leaves. Soaps are kinder because they are made from fats and oils.

Digging and double-digging is something that many of our ancestors would have done. It’s a great way to get rid of weeds, incorporate organic matter into the soil, increase air pockets and help with drainage in compacted areas. Right? Maybe not if we take the advice of today’s gardening experts and soil scientists. Not only is digging hard work, but it is generally thought to do more harm than good. It can quickly destroy the network of earthworm tunnels that provide air to roots, sever beneficial threads of fungus that work in harmony with plants, and disrupt the ecosystem beneath the surface. It can also stimulate microbes that release greenhouse gases into the air. Instead, apply organic mulch to the surface, which will deter weeds and allow earthworms to take it into the soil. Dig when you need to plant something new. Your back will thank you!

2 The application of fertiliser kills bacteria in the soil Organic gardening in tune with nature is undoubtedly best, if at all possible. However, is it true that artificial fertiliser damages soil microbes? It appears not. Bacteria absorb nutrients in fertiliser, and this helps them to multiply. The only exception seems to be when synthetic fertilisers are applied in very large amounts, which creates toxins. The most significant difference between synthetic and organic fertilisers is the time they take to release their nutrients. Chemical fertiliser releases nutrients as soon as it dissolves in water, whereas organic matter releases them very slowly.

4 If a plant looks unhealthy, give it a feed Kindness can kill! If a garden plant looks sick, the worst thing you can do is give it a dose of general fertiliser. This can stress the plant as it tries to put on more growth. Instead, look for the cause of the problem. It might simply have dry roots, in which case it can be watered thoroughly, or the pH levels of the soil might be wrong, leading to certain deficiencies. Get to know your plants and give them what they need rather than what you think they want.

Gardening

February in the garden by Graham Mitchell

Do you keep a garden notebook? Or better still, a folder on your PC or mobile phone? In today’s busy life it is so easy to forget ideas or fleeting thoughts. It is a great way to start plans for this season and beyond. By jotting notes and some quick snaps during the year you’ll have a much better idea of what your winter and spring tasks are. Record the resounding successes along with the “could do better” areas. It also helps to identify those new shoots of growth in April and May and prevent an over-enthusiastic digging session. The other use for the book or folder is to screen grab those pictures that appear on social media. It may be “The Chelsea Flower Show” but there may be elements you can build into your own garden. Snapping pictures of plants as you tour stately homes and gardens means you can source your favourites at your leisure. They are many phone apps that can identify any plant with a few clicks, and a little common sense. One thing my notebook tells me this year is that I needed to plant more early bulbs. The first snowdrops

Osteospermum Whirligig at Powis Castle

herald the new growing year and always lift the spirits. I would love to have drifts of them but with a tiny courtyard, I need to rely on containers. Did you know that the snowdrop was first recorded in the British Isles 500 years ago and was known as the Candlemas Bell? The other real mid-winter favourite is Witch-hazel. There is something about the colourful “firework” flowers, especially if we have a covering of snow. I have grown them in containers, but they tend to be short-lived, so now I rely on seeing mature specimens in public places. The sensory garden in Cae Glas Park has a splendid example, so make sure you go and visit later this month. The other thing to note in your book is to join Oswestry in Bloom. After the fantastic year in 2023, why not join our happy band of volunteers and/or join in with our garden competition in 2024. Applications are already open, just have a look at www.OswestryInBloom.Wordpress.com.

We often get asked by clients how they can boost their savings pot ready for retirement. The answer depends on lots of factors – especially the stage of life you’re at – but the good news is that there are some practical steps you can take to help increase your funds. Here, independent financial adviser and director at Belgrave Wincham, Craig Roberts, shares some top tips and strategies... •

Check your pension Assess how your pension is currently performing as a starting point. Take a moment to consider if the level of risk and prospective return align with your life circumstances. If you’re comfortable with taking on additional risk, it may be worth considering investing in higher-growth assets for potentially greater gains. Review your self-assessment tax return For those earning over £50,271 a year and paying into a pension, check if you can claim back higher-rate tax relief via self-assessment. It’s one of the biggest benefits of paying into a pension, but many higher taxpayers don’t realise that it doesn’t always happen automatically. Optimise other savings Pensions are often the best option for retirement savings, but they’re not always suitable, or possible, depending on your circumstances. In some cases, there are excellent alternatives such as Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) that are well worth exploring. Bring your pensions together Consolidating your pensions into one plan may enable you to access a wider choice of investments and save more money. There are, however, potential downsides so always seek professional advice from a regulated independent financial adviser to ensure it’s the right choice for you. Explore company pensions If you’re a director of a limited company, extracting profits in a tax-efficient way can be challenging. However, making pension contributions is one of the few strategies that can help you achieve this goal and offers an excellent way to save for your future.

For advice on your retirement savings, call Belgrave Wincham on 01691 886554 to arrange a free 60-minute consultation.

Q&A

Asset rich, cash poor – should we sell the house to our son? Q: Like many people these days, we find ourselves asset rich and cash poor in retirement and wondering whether to downsize. The children, however, don’t want to see the family home sold to strangers, so our son suggested buying the house off us. This would release our cash and improve our quality of life. If he does this, what would happen if we didn’t live 7 years? And should we pay him rent? A: If your son already owns a home and then purchases your property it would be classed as a second home and he would be liable to pay additional Stamp Duty. If he needs finance to purchase the property, he would not be eligible for a standard residential mortgage. If he lets you live in the property rent-free, he would not be allowed to claim landlord expenses to the same extent as he would as a standard buy-to-let landlord. In addition, if the ‘fair market rental value’ of the house is higher than the annual gift allowance set by HMRC, then the excess amount may result in certain tax implications. Also, if your son sells the property following your deaths, and the property has increased in value since he purchased it from you, then it is likely that he will incur Capital Gains Tax liability. There may also be implications if your son were to get into a substantial amount of debt, as the debtors may take possession of the property, and if you were living in it at the time you would need to find alternative accommodation. Before making any firm decision about selling to your son you should seek advice from a solicitor who will be able to discuss all your options in more detail. If you then decide to go ahead with the plan, it would be a good idea to request they draw up an agreement to ensure everything is done correctly, to avoid any legal and practical pitfalls.
