Royal recognition for charity providing outdoor education to thousands of schoolchildren

A Shropshire charity which provides outdoor education to thousands of schoolchildren recently officially welcomed Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal as its new patron.

As the sun blazed over the county, The Princess Royal dressed in an elegant, cream trouser suit, toured the charity’s Preston Montford field studies centre near Shrewsbury and met with young people who were on site for outdoor learning.

The environmental education charity operates a network of field study centres and works with schoolchildren right across the UK –engaging some of the most deprived young people in outdoor learning and giving them access to nature.

Her Royal Highness, who was named as Royal patron of the charity earlier this year, was met by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire Sir Edward Tate as she arrived at the field centre in Montford Bridge and was introduced to users of the centre by charity chief executive Mark Castle and his senior team.

Mark said, “We were absolutely delighted to host The Princess Royal here today and to officially welcome her as our new charity patron. All of our work is focused on creating outstanding and memorable opportunities for everyone to learn about nature – whether you’re fiveyears-old and at primary school or

80-years old and retired. We want people to have first-hand experience of nature.”

Arran Holdsworth, centre manager for Preston Montford, introduced Her Royal Highness to a group of pupils from the Marches Academy Trust who were on site taking part in various outdoor activities including a climbing session.

The students are regular visitors to the centre and actively help with practical projects on site from tree planting to building bug hotels. Nature connection and time spent outdoors is helping to re-engage them with learning.

Henry Arnold (14), a Year 9 pupil at The Grove School, was among the students.

He said, “I researched Her Royal Highness, and I discovered she was from a farming background like me, so I was interested to talk to her about that. She asked me about my family farm. It was so nice to meet her, I’ve really enjoyed today.”

from Grantham Prep School near Nottingham were also on-site as part of a three-day residential trip. They were learning about biodiversity and taking part in a bug hunt when Her Royal Highness arrived.

Year 6 pupil Freddie Smith (11) had caught a butterfly and was speaking to his teacher, Dylan Hughes, about how to identify it when The Princess Royal spoke to them.

“We thought it was a red admiral, and we were talking about ways to identify it when Princess Anne spoke and mentioned that there was a phone app to identify the butterflies,” said Mr Hughes.

Ethan Gill (10), who was also excited to be taking part in the bug hunt added, “When I was meeting The Princess Royal, I had just caught a red bug. I thought it was a beetle at first, but it was more red. I showed it to her and she asked me if I knew what it was. She was very nice.”

Rounding off the tour of the grounds, The Princess Royal was introduced to a final group of students from Droitwich Spa High School.

They were on a three-day residential trip learning vital fieldwork skills as part of their A-Level Biology course.

Student Jacob Daniels said, “This morning we’ve been investigating how the abundance of species is affected by distance from a pond. So, we’ve been looking at things like soil PH, temperature and wind speed.”

After meeting students, teachers and staff Her Royal Highness joined charity president Professor Tim Burt to unveil a plaque marking the official charity patronage.

Founded more than 80 years ago, the Field Studies Council, is the UK’s leading environmental education charity. It runs educational courses, art and leisure courses, natural history courses and professional training courses.

Hi everyone, it’s Aaron here again! I’m the General Manager at The Globe Bingo Hall in Donnington. When I last wrote to you, I’d only just joined the team, full of excitement about what was to come. Well, five months have flown by, and what a five months it has been!

We’ve hosted some of the biggest prize money nights The Globe has seen in years, as well as more free bingo sessions than you can shake a dabber at, but for me, the real success has been in making sure our members feel valued and looked after like royalty. Service is our top priority because for so many people, bingo isn’t just about the incredible prize money (although that certainly helps!). It’s about a night out, a break from the outside world, and time spent with friends and family. There really is nothing quite like it! We’ve had milestones to celebrate too, from 18th birthdays right through to 90th birthdays, and we love going above and beyond to make every occasion special. If you’re planning something, just pick up the phone – we’d be delighted to be part of your big day.

On Saturday 7th September 2025, one lucky player walked away from The Globe Bingo Donnington with an incredible £50,160 jackpot win.

What makes this story even more special is that the winner wasn’t even planning to come to bingo that evening. Their daughter, visiting for her birthday and playing bingo for the very first time, persuaded them to come along for a treat and to spend some quality time together.

The pair played the free bingo session, decided to upgrade their tickets for just a few pounds, and the result was lifechanging - a win of over £50,000!

One of my personal highlights was welcoming five of our sister clubs – Rhyl, Caernarfon, Tonypandy, Worcester, and Belper for a huge summer party. It was an afternoon packed with fun, comedy, big winners, and plenty of food and drink flowing. These events don’t just bring people together locally, they connect the wider bingo family too! And the sense of community is what makes this job so special.

That community spirit was never clearer than when we received the sad news of a local resident

When asked how it felt, the winner said: “It just doesn’t happen to people like me.”

And when asked what advice they’d give to anyone thinking about joining in at The Globe Donnington, their response was simple: “Just get yourselves here!”

Choosing Joy: A Gentle Invitation to Happiness

A few years ago, I stumbled across a book that changed my outlook on life: Choosing Happiness by Stephanie Dowrick. Until then, I had assumed happiness was something that just happened - or didn’t. The idea that happiness could be a conscious choice was a revelation for me.

At the time I was in a real funk - scratch that, miserable - feeling lost, sad, resentful, totally disconnected from the me I used to know. What I realised with this book was, it wasn’t my circumstances that were making me unhappy - it was my focus. I was fixated on what I didn’t have, what wasn’t working, and what might go wrong in the future. No wonder I was miserable!

So, I made a new decision. I chose joy.

At first, it was as simple as noticing what felt good. I started wearing brighter colours, sitting in the sunshine. I found delight in spotting ladybirds and butterflies, enjoyed curious cloud formations, observing the simple kindness of strangers. As I carved out more space for joy, I found that happiness began to take root and grow.

But what is joy, really? It’s a spectrum—sometimes a small smile, other times a burst of delight. It might be the first sip of coffee in the morning, birdsong drifting through an open window, or the children’s bubbles popping in the air. Joy isn’t only for the big moments - it lives in the everyday. And science tells us it matters: joy lowers stress, builds resilience, strengthens our immune systems, and anchors us in the present moment. It’s mindfulness.

Most importantly, joy isn’t something we have to earn. It’s our birthright. It’s a sign you’re thriving. I believe. Would there be laughter and music if not for enjoyment? We’re not here just to work and worry - we’re here to enjoy being alive.

So, this month, I invite you to notice joy. Start a list. Write down 3 things that brought you joy at the end of every day. Share it with a friend. Choose to focus a little

less on what’s missing, and a little more on what’s right here, right now. As Thích Nhất Hạnh wrote: “Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.”

Of course, joy doesn’t appear when we’re focused on everything going wrong. If we dwell on the past, obsess over what might go wrong in the future, or spend our days assigning blame, we squeeze the joy right out of life. As Eleanor Roosevelt put it: “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.”

So how do we cultivate more joy into our daily lives? Here are a few things you could try:

• Notice the invisible. The rustle of leaves, the warmth of the sun, birdsong.

• Use your senses. Savour the smell of cooking, the texture of fabric.

• Dress for joy. A bright scarf, socks or coat can shift your mood.

Spend time in sunlight. Indoors or outdoors, let it warm your skin.

• Try “joy spotting.” Look up, down, and around as you walk - you might be surprised by what you find.

Joy comes down to three things: looking for it, being open to it, and knowing how to create it. And it’s worth remembering that joy isn’t a permanent state - we’re meant to feel the full range of emotions. It’s not about seeking constant bliss or ignoring our array of emotions, it’s about creating the conditions so that we can find and experience more moments of joy more often, about noticing more joy around us and putting more joy back, the cumulative effect of which is greater health, deeper peace, contentment and the simple but profound gift of living a joyful life.

Flying start for mental health wellbeing hub that includes an option for free sessions

A new mental health wellbeing hub in Shropshire is off to a hugely successful start with many people already benefiting from its range of self-help services - including some that are free.

The Stay Mentally Healthy Hub launched at the start of the year from its base in Faraday Drive, Bridgnorth and provides one-to-one sessions, group sessions, workshops and events through a team of qualified Self Empowerment Journey (SEJ) volunteers, all dedicated to helping people stay mentally healthy.

Serving Bridgnorth and surrounding areas, the hub offers services including a free personalised wellbeing plan, and all appointments must be prebooked. No referral is necessary and partial or fully funded sessions can be obtained through online application.

Mary Phillips, founder of the Self Empowerment Journey Process and Stay Mentally Healthy Hub in Bridgnorth, which is an initiative of the Self Empowerment Foundation, said, “We are delighted with the response we have received since launching at the beginning of the year and interest in our self-help services are growing all the time.

“Good mental health and positive wellbeing are extremely important in today’s full-on, fastmoving, world and most of us need some help in achieving and maintaining that level of where we need to be mentally healthy.

What we offer is a fast, effective, easy-to-use life-changing self-help process that really works.

“We are a not-for-profit organisation and dedicated to empowering people through selfhelp to stay mentally healthy and find purpose and direction to reach their full potential.

“We are keen that everyone should have access to our services and fully funded sessions are available, but there is a minimum low-cost fee for those people who can afford it - we endeavour to keep our prices as low as possible.

“The wellbeing plan is free to all and, to ensure we are being fully inclusive, people can apply for free funded services via a simple application process online.”

Explaining how wellbeing assessments work, Mary said her SEJ consultants work closely with the individual to create a wellbeing plan that focuses on their individual wellbeing goals which can help them to find purpose and direction, address money worries, gain support with relationship issues, address emotional health, provide help with recovery and mental wellbeing and end isolation by making friends.

“Our wellbeing plans are key to what we do, fuelling our success, enabling us to make a real difference and empowering people to reach their wellbeing goals,” said Mary. “We regularly review the plan to ensure goals are being met and the plan holder can ask for a review at any time.

“The benefits of a Wellbeing Plan include a personalised service, encouragement for the individual to more easily commit to wellbeing goals, self-evaluate and take control of their own wellbeing through tailored strategies,” Mary said.

“The plan allows for the development of self-awareness, an understanding of mental and emotional triggers, and how these impact on all areas of the individual’s life, including career, relationships, health, finances and social interactions.

“Another important aspect of the plan is to empower the individual to take the preventative steps necessary to stay mentally healthy. It also means we can help identify where any additional support may be needed and advise on how that support can be accessed.”

Mary added, “We are filling a very important gap in the current services which are available to those who need support.

“We are literally helping people who are depressed, to live a normal life free from depression in as little as one to three sessions which is life changing and often lifesaving.

“Many of our clients don’t want to see their GP or speak to therapists due to stigma or they don’t meet the criteria needed for that support but here at the hub, we can help them.”

Do You Need to File a Tax Return?

From side hustles to rental income, there are many reasons why you might need to complete a Self-Assessment tax return. If you’re filing for the first time, don’t forget to register with HMRC by  5 October following the end of the tax year.

You must submit a tax return if any of the following applied to you in the 2024–25 tax year (ending 5 April 2025):

You were self-employed as a sole trader and earned over £1,000 (before expenses).

You were a partner in a business partnership.

· Your total taxable income exceeded £150,000

· You had to pay Capital Gains Tax after selling assets like shares or property.

· You were liable for the High Income Child Benefit Charge

· You received untaxed income, such as:

•    Rental income from property

•    Tips or commission

•    Savings or investment income, including dividends

•    Foreign income

Even if your income was below £150,000, you may still need to file a return if you had other sources of income or made capital gains.

If you need to file for the first time, you must register with HMRC by 5 October 2025 This ensures you receive your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) and access to HMRC’s online filing system in time.

Beef Bourguignon with cheesy garlic bread topping

This hearty midweek family favourite, slow-cooked in one pot.

Ingred I ents

• 15g dried porcini

• 1kg beef shin, diced

• Salt and black pepper, to taste

• 75g plain flour

• 4 tbsp vegetable oil

• 1 x 390g jar Opies Pickled Walnuts, pickling liquor reserved

• 2 onions, peeled and cut into chunks

• 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed whole

• 1 tbsp tomato purée

• 450ml red wine

• 1 beef stock

• 3 bay leaves

• ½ tsp dried thyme

• 1½ tsp sugar

• 200g carrots, peeled and chopped

For the cheesy garlic bread

• 1 baguette, cut into slices diagonally

• 1 ball of mozzarella, diced

• 80g mature cheddar cheese, grated

• 50g butter, softened

• 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped

• A handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C , gas mark 5. Add the porcini to a small bowl, cover with hot water and set aside. Season the beef generously then toss in the flour to lightly coat.

2. Heat 3 tbsp of the oil in a large ovenproof casserole dish on high. Shake off the excess flour and add the beef, frying in batches until evenly browned. Remove using a slotted spoon and set aside on a plate.

3. Deglaze the pan with 4 tbsp of the reserved pickled walnut liquor to help loosen any brown bits on the bottom of the pan, then drain the porcini and add the soaking water to the pan before roughly chopping the porcini. Add another tbsp of oil, reduce heat to medium, add the onions and garlic, and fry for 4-5 minutes before adding the beef, tomato purée, wine, beef stock, bay leaves, thyme, sugar and porcini. Stir, cover with a lid and transfer to the oven for 2 hours.

4. Remove from the oven, add the carrots, then cover and return to the oven for 1 hour or until the carrots are cooked through and the meat is tender. Halve the pickled walnuts and place on top of the stew.

5. To make the cheesy garlic bread, combine the mozzarella, cheddar, butter, garlic and parsley in a bowl. Season and spread the mixture over the baguette slices. Arrange the slices on top of the stew so they overlap with each other and bake for 15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbling. Remove, sprinkle with parsley and serve hot.

Burnt Basque Cheesecake with caramel sauce

This Spanish-style baked cheesecake, with crème caramel-style bittersweet notes and creamy yet lusciously light centre, will quickly become a favourite as it’s really simple but so, so good!

Serves 8-10 | Preparation time 20-25 minutes, plus cooling | Cooking time 40-50 minutes

Ingred I ents

• 1kg cream cheese

• 400g caster sugar

• 2 tbsp plain flour

• 7 eggs

• 2-3 tsp vanilla paste

• 200ml double cream

For the caramel sauce

• 250g caster sugar

• 1 tbsp water

• 50g butter

• 120ml double cream

method

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C, gas mark 7. Line a 25cm springform cake tin with enough baking parchment to extend over the edges of the tin – this will help you remove the cheesecake from the tin later on and prevent it from sticking. Just scrunch the parchment in! It gives a beautiful, rustic look.

2. In a stand mixer or using an electric whisk in a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar and flour together. Whisk the eggs with the vanilla in a separate bowl, then slowly add to the cream cheese mixture a little at a time, whisking continuously. When it is all combined, add the double cream just to incorporate; don’t over-whisk it at this point.

3. Fill the lined tin with the mixture and bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until brown, yet still a little wobbly in the middle. Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly before putting in the fridge to cool completely.

4. Meanwhile, to make the caramel sauce, put the sugar in a large frying pan and add the water so it’s like wet sand. Place over a high heat, but do not stir it at this point. Leave to bubble away until it is a dark amber colour, then gently swirl the pan to combine. Remove from the heat and add the butter, then put back over the heat and whisk. Now add the cream, bring to the boil and whisk again to combine. Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly before serving along with a slice of your delicious cheesecake.

Apple Tarte Tatin

Tarte tatin has an air of sophistication that brings with it a reputation for being difficult or time-consuming to make. In reality, it’s uncomplicated and undemanding, especially if you use ready-rolled pastry.

Ingred I ents

• 75g ready-rolled puff pastry

• 35g caster sugar

• 30g butter

• ¼ tsp vanilla extract

• A small pinch of salt

• 140g baking apples (around 1 small apple), peeled, cored and cut into 1cm slices

To serve

• Whipped cream, ice cream or creme fraiche

method

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, 160°C fan, gas mark 4.

2. Unroll your pastry sheet and cut it into a circle the size of a cast-iron frying pan.

3. Add the sugar to your pan and heat over a medium heat. Don’t stir it but let it melt, then gently swill it around the pan as it turns to liquid. It will start to caramelise and turn a golden colour, this will take 4-5 minutes.

4. Once the sugar is golden, turn off the heat and add in the butter. Add in the vanilla and a small pinch of salt, and stir again to combine everything.

5. Once combined, place the apples on top of the caramel, arranging them in any way you like but trying to keep them in a single layer as much as possible. Lay the circle of pastry on top of the apples and tuck it around the edges of the pan slightly. Place in the oven and bake for 25 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden.

6. Once baked, take your serving plate and place it face down on top of the skillet. Carefully but confidently flip the plate and skillet over, turning out the tar te so the apples face upwards. Serve with whipped cream, ice cream or creme fraiche.

High Sheriff of Shropshire Launches New Initiative to Empower Young People

The High Sheriff of Shropshire, Jane Trowbridge, is proud to announce the launch of Youth Awareness Day, a powerful new initiative designed to empower young people across the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin to address the challenges they face and raise vital funds for youth-focused causes. This campaign puts young people at the heart of the solution, giving them a voice and the tools to make a real difference.

Youth Awareness Day culminates in a “Go Blue for Youth” focus day on 16 October. Schools and organisations across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin are being asked to wear something blue to show their support and donate to the Shropshire Community Foundation Youth Awareness Fund. The initiative goes beyond a single day, inviting students to participate in the Enterprise Challenge, a longterm fundraising project that encourages them to run their own mini-businesses and events.

“The statistics speak for themselves,” said Jane Trowbridge. “Approximately 1 in 6 young people have mental health issues, and exploitation is increasing at an alarming rate in Shropshire. Having served as a Magistrate in Telford Court for 15 years, I’ve seen firsthand how the system has failed vulnerable young people caught in cycles of neglect and abuse. Early intervention and support are crucial.”

The campaign’s unique power lies in its commitment to being “by young people, for young people.” All funds raised will be allocated by a panel of Youth Ambassadors—young people from across the county who will work with the Shropshire Community Foundation to select the charities and projects that they believe will have the greatest impact. This approach not only provides much-needed financial support but also equips young people with the skills and knowledge to navigate their own environments safely and responsibly.

“Investing in our young people is an investment in all of our futures,” Trowbridge added. “This initiative provides a platform for them to raise awareness and create a sense of community and belonging that strengthens society as a whole.”

Initial response to the project has been overwhelmingly positive, with numerous schools, local businesses, the police, and NHS staff already showing their support.

Harry finds out that measles

is not “measly”

Harry missed his best friend at school –“Where are you?” he texted. “I’ve got to stay at home – my younger brother is in hospital with measles,” came the reply. That sounded bad.

“Could I get measles?” asked Harry that night at tea time. “I hope not,” said his Mum, “You’ve had both MMR jabs so that makes it very unlikely.” “Is it bad?” replied Harry. ” Well,” said his Mum, “It can be severe, the doctor told me it would be the worst illness I’d see if you caught it so I did my best to make sure you wouldn’t. At the time there was some anxiety that the vaccine could cause autism but the man who published that idea was found to have got it all wrong and was struck off – I mean stopped from being a doctor.”

Later that night Harry looked up measles. He knew measly was a word for really small but the word originally meant good for nothing because people with it, were, well, good for nothing! A vaccine to stop it was introduced in 1968. Before that there were hundreds of thousands of cases per year and about 100 of those were fatal. He wondered why it was still a problem if the vaccine was the answer but then read that the work his Mum mentioned had broken people’s confidence it the jab. Measles was really good, or bad (depending on how you looked at it!) at spreading. Before the jab every person with it could spread it to 18 others! To stop that you needed something called herd immunity –that apparently meant to stop outbreaks you needed more than 9 out of every 10 people to be vaccinated. 92-94% of people to be more exact. In some parts of the country the number was down to about 6 or 7 out of ten and the measles virus was spreading. Last year there were almost 3000 cases and a few deaths.

That seemed a bit odd when Harry found studies of literally millions of children showing no link to the autism his Mum mentioned. Some of it was due to poor communication, poverty, and poor access to health care. Harry smiled when he found a certain comment: “most people do not make decisions based on the facts!” Then he came across the word “adjuvant.” It seems certain chemicals can make vaccines more effective and these were called adjuvants. “Ad” meaning towards and “Juvare” meaning to help – those romans again! When it was proved that the measles virus was not linked to autism someone suggested it was adjuvants – and one of these had some mercury in it. Now Harry found out mercury was quite poisonous but the vaccine had contained very small amounts in the past – and had none now. “So, no logic there either,” thought Harry.

Harry looked at measles on the nhs.co.uk website. It seemed to start like a cold but then you got a very high temperature alongside the cold symptoms. You could develop some white marks on the inside of your mouth called Koplik’s spots named after a New York doctor. Then after a few days you got a rash - often on the face first but then a red non itchy rash all over. Most kids recovered in a week or two but you could get what was called secondary infections in the lung, your ear and even your brain – and that’s what killed you.

Learning something new can be a source of great joy and personal growth. Perhaps you’ve always harboured a desire to speak a new language, master the art of cursive writing or discover a hidden musical talent. Yet, the demands of daily life often relegate these aspirations to mere thoughts. This is where evening classes, whether at a local college or through a private company, can provide the structure and support to turn these dreams into tangible achievements.

A 2020 survey conducted by Tes Magazine revealed that the uptake for evening classes had dropped by around 50% in the last ten years. In fact, for many of us, education stops after university or secondary school as we’re thrust into employment and parenthood. With the saying ‘every day is a school day’ in mind and many agreeing that education is a lifelong pursuit, why do many of us never consider the option of local colleges or evening classes?

The number one answer is probably time. Adulthood not only brings responsibility but distraction – TV, social media, DIY, family and so on. Although for many this is a reasonable concern, it is important to state that many classes are hosted outside traditional working hours, making it as easy as possible to attend.

What’s on offer?

If you haven’t looked at an adult learning prospectus recently, you might imagine that evening classes are just for working skills, like how to use Microsoft Office or give presentations. If this is your view, then the first thing to learn is how wrong you are! Work, vocation and hobby training courses are all available.

Consider the possibilities: An Introduction to Generative AI, Improving your Speaking Voice, Indian Head Massage, and Pottery are just a glimpse of the diverse range of courses available. While many of these skills could enhance your professional life, they also offer a gateway to new hobbies and a chance to be part of something enjoyable and fulfilling. Who knows, you might discover a passion you never knew you had!

Taking lessons can bring indirect benefits too. Spending some time in a different environment can lead to a general improvement in your mental health and well-being. Furthermore, several observational studies show that people who do mentally stimulating activities may have a lower risk of cognitive decline and dementia, regardless of the age you are when you start. And don’t forget the potential friendships you can make in these classes with people equally passionate about the topic that you’re learning.

In summary, evening classes are an excellent way to learn something new, make friends, and benefit your mental health. That leaves you to take the initial steps: research what’s on offer and either call the course provider or find an open evening to attend to chat through your options. It’ll be fun!

The charm of the Channel Islands

Nestled between the UK and France, the Channel Islands have long been recognised for their holiday appeal. Owned by the British crown, but not actually part of the UK, they offer British tourists hopes of a warmer climate and a touch of the exotic, without the need to cross borders.

The archipelago is made up of five main islands, the largest and most populated being Jersey and Guernsey. Closer to the coast of Normandy than the UK’s shores, the weather here tends to be milder. English and French are widely spoken, and although you’ll see road signs and street names in French, most of the population speaks English. To top it off, the islands are easily accessible from many places in the UK. You can catch a ferry from Poole and Portsmouth to Jersey and Guernsey, and direct planes fly from airports such as Exeter, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow.

Visit Jersey Zoo

Founded by writer and naturalist Gerald Durrell in 1959, Jersey Zoo is widely considered one of the best in the world. It also plays an important role in the conservation and breeding of species that are under threat, and their reintroduction into the wild.

Visit to see endangered creatures such as Andean bears, orangutans and lowland gorillas, and even stay overnight thanks to the zoo’s unique camping programme.

Discover WWII relics

Between 1940 and 1945, the Channel Islands came under Nazi occupation, leaving behind sobering

reminders of the horrors of WWII. These include the remains of the Lager Sylt concentration camp on the island of Alderney, the wartime memorabilia of Guernsey’s La Vallette Underground Military Museum and – perhaps most poignantly – the Jersey War Tunnels, the remains of a Nazi underground hospital converted into an interactive museum.

Find your favourite beach

The Channel Islands have no shortage of sandy beaches to lay your towel on – in fact, some are so beautiful, you’ll almost forget you’re in the British Isles! On the island of Herm, the azure waters of Shell Beach wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean. Then there’s the sheltered Portelet beach in Jersey, which offers a perfect swimming lagoon at low tide.

Explore by foot

The Channel Islands offer a fantastic network of coastal pathways from which to soak up the islands’ spectacular scenery. Walk along quiet clifftop paths, stopping to savour the scent of subtropical plants, and look out for cormorants, oystercatchers and even puffins if you’re lucky. Along the way, you’ll be treated to views of sandy bays, rugged cliffs, hidden coves and farmland dotted with Jersey cows.

Take to the water

Jersey was once the centre of Europe’s surf scene, and the sport is still as popular as ever among locals. The three-mile stretch of St. Ouen’s Bay on the west coast of the island remains one of Jersey’s main surfing locations. Guernsey’s surf scene is smaller, with most local surfers chasing the swell at Vazon Bay.
