A Year Long Fundraiser for Veterans

Op ENDURANCE is a fundraising campaign and a test of resilience, strength and determination. Led by Sarah Newey, the fundraiser brings together extreme endurance challenges and a deeply personal motivation: giving back to the veterans’ community that supported her at one of the most difficult points in her life.

After serving in the British Army, Sarah was medically discharged and later diagnosed with PTSD. Like many veterans transitioning into civilian life, she faced a period marked by uncertainty and isolation. It was during this time, she was supported by the Veterans’ Orthopaedic Hub at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, which provides specialist care, rehabilitation, and community connection for veterans with complex physical and psychological needs.

That support proved life-changing for Sarah. The Hub offered not only clinical care, but understanding and hope. Op ENDURANCE started because Sarah wants other veterans to have access to the same vital support she did, and she believes that taking on challenges with a clear purpose can help people heal.

Op ENDURANCE is a year-long programme of physically and mentally demanding endurance events. Each challenge has been carefully chosen to push limits,

encourage personal growth, and raise awareness as well as vital funds. This is going to be an extraordinary commitment of time, discipline, and resilience.

The campaign includes an eight-day self-sufficient expedition in the Arctic Circle, where Sarah will face extreme cold, isolation, physical fatigue and everything else that goes with the harshest of environments. She is also taking on some of the UK’s most iconic challenges, including the London Marathon (run in partnership with the Invictus Games Foundation), and the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales within 24 hours.

Op ENDURANCE also includes a series of demanding triathlon events, including the Outlaw Half Ironman and Slateman Snowdonia, combining long-distance swimming, cycling, and running in some of the country’s toughest terrain. Added to this is Snowdon 24, a relentless

challenge involving repeated ascents of Snowdon over a 24-hour period, and finally the ultimate test: Ironman Leeds…one of the most gruelling types of endurance races.

While these events are intimidating on their own, Op ENDURANCE will test Sarah’s limits with each mile run, climb completed, and hour spent training representing remembrance and thanks to those who’ve served.

Funds raised through the campaign directly support the Veterans’ Orthopaedic Hub, helping to enhance and maintain facilities and expand the services the veterans rely on. This includes support that addresses mental health and long-term recovery that’s often lost after leaving the Armed Forces.

Sarah wants Op ENDURANCE to remind us that healing has its ups and downs, and strength grows again when people keep going, support each other, and share a common goal. Sarah’s journey to back to health, highlights the role that physical challenge can play in mental wellbeing, particularly for those with military backgrounds who thrive on structure, goals, and teamwork.

By supporting Op ENDURANCE, donations will ensure veterans are not left behind once their uniform comes off.

FULL HOUSE OF LOVE

At the heart of the Bingo community are the people, from the friendly faces working in our clubs to those who walk through the front door each day. We are excited to share a series of short stories celebrating the individuals who make this community so special.

For our first story, and with Valentines Day just around the corner, we are delighted to share Ron and Jenny’s journey. What began as a chance meeting has grown into a truly life changing love story.

Thirteen years ago, Ron and Jenny first met at the bingo hall as friends, bonding over games, laughter and the welcoming atmosphere of the club. Over time, their friendship quietly blossomed into something more, and in 2025 the pair officially became a couple proving that love really can be just one call away.

that spanned several days, allowing Ron and Jenny to share their joy with as many regular members as possible. Each familiar face had played a part in their journey, creating memories and meaningful moments along the way. Tables were beautifully decorated, bubbly was thoughtfully laid out by Jenny to share with members throughout the week, and two impressive engagement cakes took pride of place on the stage, creating an unforgettable sight for all who attended.

In September, the bingo hall proudly helped organise a special engagement celebration

Reflecting on their story, Jenny shared, “If it wasn’t for the club, we would never have met.” When asked what first drew her to Ron, she smiled and said, “It was his charm and his good looks.” Anyone who knows Ron will agree that he is every bit the charming gentleman. With wedding plans hopefully set for this summer, there is no doubt that more celebrations will be held where it all began, right here at the Globe Bingo Hall

Ron will agree that

What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Happy New Year!

How are you feeling?

Excited? Nonplussed? Not celebrating until nature’s new year in March? Or maybe you’re feeling frustrated - frustrated that the end of 2025 looked and felt a lot like the end of 2024. Maybe it seems like nothing has changed, shifted, moved, or evolved, and that’s not what you’d hoped for the year.

The start of a new year - whilst exciting and inspiring for somecan feel daunting, overwhelming, or disheartening for others. It can highlight the dreams still sitting on a shelf in their hearts, untouched.

To those of you, I ask: What are you afraid of? What’s holding you back from doing the thing that you really want to do? What’s stopping you from stepping out of the familiar and into the great, beautiful unknown - full of possibility and opportunity? What are you telling yourself is - and isn’t - possible for you? Where do those beliefs come from, and can you challenge them? How much do you really believe them? How much longer are you going to make yourself wait for what you truly desire and deserve?

“Life is not tried

It is merely survived

If you’re standing outside the fire.”

These Garth Brooks song lyrics have been swirling around in my mind since I was a teenager. They rang true to me even then. I knew there was more to life than being safe and comfortable, more than

choosing the predictable just to avoid disappointment. Life is unpredictable and resisting that is futile. Surviving is not my goal for my life, thriving is.

“Standing Outside the Fire” gave my self-conscious younger self the permission to live life my way, and the courage to dream big and not stand outside the hot, beautiful fire of life. As we step into this new calendar year, I hope it gives you that permission too. The unknown can be scary. Following our hearts and pursuing our dreams can feel scary. Absolutely. But, as it’s been said, “everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear”. We don’t reach our dreams by staying in the familiar, because as clichéd as it may sound: if we want something different, we have to do something different and different is unfamiliar.

Different doesn’t have to be huge. You don’t have to quit your job, move house, leave your partner. Maybe that is what your heart desires and maybe what it desires is eating different foods, doing something different with your weekends, meeting new people, trying an art class, wearing red lipstick. Small things can have big impacts on our lives and how we feel - just think about the ripples on the water of a lake from one small pebble being thrown in.

We get one life, and it’s up to each of us to choose how we live it. So, as Mary Oliver asked in her poem, “tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Whether you’re on the precipice of a life transition or simply sensing something must change because you

We don’t reach our dreams by staying in the familiar, because as clichéd as it may sound: if we want something different, we have to do something different and different is unfamiliar.

don’t want to be in the same place next year, I can help you gain clarity, define your path forward, and step confidently into your next chapter. jennawardcoaching@gmail.com

Jewellery and Coin roadshow

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins. We paid them over £1600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected.

We asked them for their permission to pass on this story to help other people realise what they may be sitting on and they were only too pleased to allow us to let everyone know that they might be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it!

Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets d’art.

Why not get a free valuation from our experts at one of our roadshows. There is no queuing and our experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve.

If you like the valuation our expert will make you the same offer in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself.

The whole process of Valuation is free of charge and very private, so you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

Flagship International Women’s Day event will help businesses Give to Gain

Shropshire’s flagship International Women’s Day event will have a new location and theme this year – with the support of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

The March 6 event – a partnership between Shropshire Growth Hub, Invest Telford, Zebra PR and Midlands Air Ambulance Charity - will bring together women in business, entrepreneurs and community leaders for a day of inspiration.

The year’s event is themed Give to Gain and will take place at the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s headquarters at Shifnal.

Organisers say it will include networking, an inspiring panel discussion featuring expert women from the worlds of charity and business, as well as an interactive session and lunch.

Ruth Westwood, manager of Shropshire Growth Hub, said the day promised to be an inspiring occasion.

“Over the last few years our celebration of International Women’s Day has become a highlight of the Shropshire business calendar and played an important part in building the profile of women in business in the county.

“We are delighted to have the support of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity for this year’s

event, which promises to be a truly insightful day and one of the most inspiring we have ever organised.

“This year’s theme is Give to Gain to help build a mindset of generosity, community and reciprocity to support opportunities for women everywhere.”

The expert panel will feature Midlands Air Ambulance Charity chief executive Hanna Sebright, who played a leading role in a number of businesses – including leading a management buy-out and founding Electronic Health Media – before joining the charity in 2009.

She will be joined by Emily Browne, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s head of education and training who has a passion for advancing clinical education through innovation, and critical care paramedic Fay Pollock, who has been a paramedic for 28 years and joined the team in 2012.

Also joining the panel are businesswomen Rhea Freeman and Jess Shields.

Rhea is the best-selling author of books including Small & Supercharged and You’ve Got This. She is an ILM Level 7 qualified coach and mentor, providing structured support to help businesses achieve their goals.

She is the founder of the Small & Supercharged Community and

Membership, a supportive online space that provides resources, networking, and expert guidance to small business owners.

Jess is a West Midlands-based coach, trainer and founder of Jessica Shields Coaching Ltd, with more than 10 years’ experience as a female business owner and a passion for helping people feel confident, capable and supported in their working environments.

Since launching her business in 2015, Jess has coached in a wide range of sectors including education, healthcare, NHS, prison and probation services, professional services and not-for-profit organisations.

The event gets under way at 10.30am with arrival drinks, before a welcome from Hanna Sebright.

The panel discussion will run from 11.15am to Noon and will be followed by lunch and networking.

A 30-minute interactive session will follow lunch with another opportunity for networking rounding off the event from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

Clarity at Last on APR and BPR Changes

Recent announcements on Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR) have brought welcome clarity for farmers, landowners and family businesses after months of uncertainty.

Proposals last year to restrict full APR and BPR to just £1 million of qualifying assets from 6 April 2026 caused widespread concern. Many established farming and trading businesses felt the cap failed to reflect modern asset values and could force families to sell land or business interests simply to meet an inheritance tax bill.

The Autumn Budget confirmed that a capped regime would begin on 6 April 2026 and, importantly, that the allowance would be transferable between spouses and civil partners, enabling couples to combine their reliefs.

Following sustained lobbying from the farming and business communities, the government later revised the proposal. Just before Christmas, it confirmed that the cap would increase to £2.5 million per individual, while keeping spousal transferability. In straightforward terms, qualifying APR and BPR assets

of up to £5 million could potentially receive full relief on second death.

This revision represents a substantial softening of the original proposals and provides greater certainty for families planning succession ahead of April 2026.

Alongside the higher threshold, it has been reiterated that APR and BPR remain targeted reliefs, intended to support genuine farming and trading activity. The qualifying conditions have not been relaxed: claims still depend on the nature of the business, how assets are used, and whether statutory ownership and occupation requirements are met. Careful planning, good record-keeping and regular reviews therefore remain essential.

If you own agricultural land or a trading business, now is a good time to review your succession and estate planning in light of these changes. As a local firm of accountants, we would be pleased to discuss how the £2.5 million limit, spousal transferability and timing may affect you, and to help ensure your plans remain robust, compliant and tax-efficient for the future.

What does a laW yer actually do?

The team at a Shropshire law firm are lifting the lid on their working lives for a new series of podcasts aimed at raising awareness of how they help people and businesses.

Kicking off Lanyon Bowdler’s “So, What Do You Do?” features are Alexander Spanner, an associate personal injury lawyer, and David Hughes, a senior associate costs lawyer.

What is a personal injury claim and what does it involve?

Alex: “A personal injury claim essentially means you are seeking compensation as a result of being injured by the negligence of another person.

“The general aim is to provide the injured party, known as the claimant, with financial compensation to cover their injuries and any other financial losses which occurred as a direct impact of the accident.

Alexander-Spanner-and-David-Hughes

firm, and we work particularly closely with the personal injury team. My job is to recover legal costs, such as solicitors’ fees, which will be incurred during the pursuit of a personal injury claim.

“Probably the most famous costs case of recent times involved the “Wagatha Christie” trial, which was a libel case between Colleen Rooney and Rebecca Vardy, and the large figures involved caught the attention of the public.

Our People, Your Team

“One of the things I really like about personal injury law is that whilst it can be quite complicated in places, the core principles of it are really quite simple and boil down to two key questions. Firstly, have you been injured? And secondly, was the cause of the injury someone else’s fault?

Here to Help

“The most common types of injury scenarios we come across are usually road traffic collisions, accidents at work and public liability injuries. We have a really experienced team of personal injury lawyers here at Lanyon Bowdler and can advise on any claim that you are likely to bring.”

“It was actually quite nice to see a costs case in the headlines of the mainstream news, with people explaining what costs budgets were and the difference between standard basis and indemnity basis costs. I certainly got asked a lot of questions during and after that particular case!”

Do all injuries give rise to a potential legal claim?

• Disputes

Alex: “No they don’t. Sometimes injuries do just happen and aren’t anybody’s fault. In order to be successful in a personal injury claim, you need to prove something called liability, which means that a person or organisation has been negligent and is liable to pay you compensation for your injury.”

• Employment Law

• Motoring & Crime

Alex: “The burden of proof is always on the claimant (i.e. the person bringing the claim) to prove that

negligence occurred which caused the injury. Briefly, you would need to prove the following:

1. That a duty of care existed between them and the defendant.

2. That the defendant has done something, or failed to do something, which breached that duty of care; and 3. That the breach caused injury and loss to the claimant.”

How do you calculate the value of a personal injury claim?

Alex: “Once you’ve proved liability and the defendant has admitted liability, you can then move onto something called quantumbasically, how much compensation you should receive for the personal injury claim.

“You have general damages, which is a monetary award that you receive as a compensation for your injuries, and special damages which relate to the financial losses which have arisen as a result of the negligence. These financial losses can include a number of things, such as loss of wages, treatment and therapy costs, and any specialist equipment you now need.”

Confidence in the New Year and Becoming Who You Already Are

The arrival of a new year often brings a familiar pressure to become better, braver, more successful. Yet confidence doesn’t come from reinventing yourself overnight. Real confidence is quieter, steadier, and built through intention rather than grand resolutions.

Confidence begins with self-trust. It’s the belief that you can handle what comes next even if you don’t have all the answers yet. In the new year, this means shifting your focus from perfection to progress. Instead of asking, “How do I become fearless?” ask, “What small promise can I keep to myself today?” Each kept promise, no matter how small, strengthens your inner credibility.

The new year is also an opportunity to redefine failure. Confidence grows when setbacks are no longer treated as proof of inadequacy, but as information.

avoid failure, but they ARE the ones who don’t let it silence them.

Confidence thrives when you stop measuring your life against someone else’s highlight reel.

The new year is also an opportunity to redefine failure. Confidence grows when setbacks are no longer treated as proof of inadequacy, but as information. A missed goal, an awkward conversation, or a change of plans doesn’t erase your worth. It refines your direction. Confident people aren’t those who

Finally, confidence grows when you allow yourself to try the thing you’ve been postponing. Confidence isn’t the absence of doubt but it’s the decision to move forward despite it.

As the new year unfolds, remember this simple thought…… confidence is not something you suddenly acquire. It’s something you practice daily. And with each choice rooted in honesty and courage, you become more fully yourself.

Harlequin Romance

A great alternative to the classic stripe or check pattern is the harlequin pattern of elongated diamonds. Seen across many products from doormats, lampshades, cushions and tiles, it also perfectly complements the enduring scallop trend. Sticking with a feminine and pastel colour palette will make it more modern and less court jester.

Shaping Homes for the Future: Ke-design’s Approach to Building and Renovation in 2026

As we move into 2026, you may be thinking about transforming your home by remodelling and extending, moving house and making it work for you, or finally being in that position to make the dream of a self-build happen.

It’s Beautiful magazine spoke to Shropshire’s award-winning architectural firm Ke-design, who have been established in the county for 15 years, for advice and trends for 2026 for your project.

Their first bit of advice is to plan early and choose the right architectural services. “2026 has already been a busy start to the year for Ke-design, with inquiries from potential clients not knowing where to start,” Craig Marston, founding director explains.

“Our response is that they’ve done it by contacting us, because with our experience we can talk them through the progress, what to expect and of course give advice. Engaging with the right architectural services is so undervalued.

“Our ethos is good design adds value and poor design adds cost. This is whether it’s a small extension or a new build, getting it right from the start can make all the difference. And it’s not just about the design and getting planning, a good set of building regulation drawings that building contractors can work from without costly mistakes is equally important.”

A notable example of Ke-design’s services is a unique three plot development in Porth Y Waen, Nr Oswestry. The well-designed houses had no issues at planning stage, and a comprehensive set of building regulation drawings meant there have been no issues on site. So, the building contractor could crack on, without having to call Ke-design for information or to rectify onsite issues.

Plot 1 was sold on completion and Plot 2 has been sold while under construction, a testament to the quality of the design and build.

Ke-design regularly work with building contractors that praise the level

of detail and accuracy of our drawings, meaning the project runs smoothly with no costly errors or delays.

Ke-design will be exhibiting this excellence by returning to the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC in March. The event is a platform for those considering projects to seek advice and inspiration and Ke-design invite those with projects and seasoned developers to come along.

“We pick up projects at the show where the client has received planning and for whatever reason they are looking for different architectural services to undertake building regulations.” This includes projects in Coventry, Nottingham, Tamworth, and more locally a self-build in St Martins.

Craig continues, “This is something we are happy to do, and a lot of the time the client isn’t 100% happy with the design, giving us the opportunity to improve the design, even if it’s from a build approach.

“We have been regular exhibitors for the last 10 years,” Craig explains. “We love meeting people who have travelled from all over the country to discuss their projects and are looking for advice. We find it quite humbling when people compliment us on our projects and want to appoint our services.”

“Some architectural firms are there just wanting that Grand Designs project. But we find that some of the visitors are scared off by this grandness and the designer’s ego. We like to chat to the visitors and in a lot of instances, while their projects may be small, we appreciate they haven’t done this before and have no experience, so they simply want their hand holding through the process. Good design is offering something the homeowner wants, or hasn’t been thought of, while keeping the build cost down and within the budget and meeting the clients brief.

So, what trends can we expect for 2026? Craig’s response was short: “Good design is not a trend.”

Ke-design will be offering architectural services and advice at the National Homebuilding and Renovating Show in Birmingham (19-22 March). For complimentary tickets and information please email info@ke-design.co.uk

Moroccan Lamb

This rich and deeply delicious dish is based on a classic Moroccan tagine. It’s the perfect winter warmer, with a spicy hint.

Ingred I ents

• 6 small lamb shanks (or lamb neck chops) about 1.5kg in total

• 2 onions, peeled and roughly chopped

• 2 red peppers, deseeded and roughly chopped

• 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped

• 4 sprigs fresh rosemary, bashed

• 1 orange, thickly sliced

• 2 cinnamon sticks, bashed

• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 1 x 750ml bottle red wine

• 1 tbsp ras el hanout (see below)

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes

• 2 tbsp date syrup or molasses

• 125g small pitted black olives

• 75g dates, pitted and chopped

• 4 tbsp freshly chopped coriander For the ras el hanout

• 3 cardamom pods, seeds only

• 1 tsp coriander seeds

• ½ tsp cumin seeds

• ½ tsp sweet paprika

• ½ tsp ground cinnamon

• ½ tsp ground cayenne

• ½ tsp ground turmeric

• ½ tsp ground ginger to serve

• Couscous, coriander and pomegranate seeds

method

1. A day ahead, place the lamb shanks in a large ceramic bowl or plastic container. Add the onions, peppers, garlic, rosemary, orange slices, cinnamon sticks and some salt and pepper. Pour over the wine and leave to marinate overnight in the fridge.

2. To make the ras el hanout, place the cardamom seeds, coriander seeds and cumin seeds in a small dry frying pan and place over a medium heat. Cook for 2-3 minutes until they are browned and starting to release their aroma. Let cool, then grind to a fine powder in a spice grinder (or a mortar and pestle). Mix with the ground spices and store in a jar until required.

3. The next day, strain the marinade juices into a jug, reserving all the vegetables and set both aside. Pat the lamb shanks dry with paper towels and season generously with salt and pepper.

4. Heat half the oil in a 6-litre cast iron casserole with lid over a high heat. Fry the shanks for 5 minutes until browned all over. Remove with a slotted spoon and reduce the heat to medium. Add the remaining oil and the reserved vegetables to the pan (but not the orange slices) and fry for 5-6 minutes over a medium heat until browned and sticky. Stir in the ras el hanout spice mix and stir for 1 minute.

5. Return the lamb to the pan with the orange slices, the marinade juices, tomatoes and date syrup, stirring well. Bring the stew to the boil, cover, reduce the heat and simmer over a very low heat for 2 hours until the lamb is starting to fall from the bone. Remove the lid, stir in the olives and dates, and cook uncovered for a further 15 minutes until the sauce has thickened. Stir in the coriander and adjust seasoning to taste.

6. Serve with the couscous, herbs and pomegranate seeds.

Shropshire’s Sweet Success: Gingerbread Factory Stars on BBC’s Inside the Factory

A Market Drayton business renowned for its creativity and craftsmanship appeared on national television as BBC One’s Inside the Factory Christmas Special went behind the scenes at Image On Food Ltd – home of Original Biscuit Bakers and the historic Billington’s Gingerbread brands.

Image On Food Ltd, based in Market Drayton – famously known as the ‘home of gingerbread’ – welcomed Inside the Factory presenters Paddy McGuinness and Cherry Healey in September 2024 for an exclusive look at the fascinating process behind its much-loved hand-iced biscuits.

The festive episode followed the journey of Original Biscuit Bakers’ Christmas range, focusing on the popular Santa and Reindeer biscuit design. Viewers saw every step of the process, from the arrival of raw ingredients to the finished biscuit treats ready for dispatch across the UK. Along the way, the programme promoted the artistry and precision that goes into creating these delights, including mixing the delicious signature dough, rolling, cutting, baking, robotic flooding and the intricate handicing by talented artisans that makes Original Biscuit Bakers’ creations so distinctive in quality.

Original Biscuit Bakers has been delighting customers for more than three decades with its hand-iced biscuit novelties, stocked in quality farm shops, visitor attractions and national retailers such as Waitrose and Booths. Their Christmas collection includes festive favourites such as Santa, Reindeer, Gonk, Snowman, Snowflake, Santa Man and Penguin – each biscuit lovingly crafted and decorated to bring joy to every celebration.

Although the episode focused on Original Biscuit Bakers’ festive creations, Image On Food Ltd is also home to another Shropshire icon – Billington’s Gingerbread. Crafted in Market Drayton since 1817, this historic recipe combines secret spices, a dash of rum and golden syrup to create crisp gingerbread fingers that have been enjoyed for over 200 years. This enduring tradition sits alongside the company’s innovative hand-iced biscuits, making Image On Food Ltd a true champion of both heritage and creativity.

The Christmas Special episode of Inside the Factory featuring Image On Food Ltd aired on BBC One on Tuesday 23 December, offering viewers a unique glimpse into the world of gingerbread and hand-iced biscuits. For more information about Original Biscuit Bakers and Billington’s Gingerbread, visit: https://imageonfood.co.uk.

The business continues to go from strength to strength with production continuously ramping up. Last year alone, the factory produced an astonishing 3,686,460 gingerbreads – weighing in at 185 tonnes – across 94 hand iced designs.

Managing Director Gemma Williams said, “We were delighted to welcome the Inside the Factory team to our factory and share the passion and craftsmanship that goes into every biscuit we make on site. Gingerbread is such an important part of our local heritage here in Market Drayton and we’re proud to keep this tradition alive while continuing to innovate and bring joy to our customers across the UK. It was a wonderful experience to meet Paddy and Cherry – they were genuinely interested in every detail and brought such energy and excitement to our factory. We hope viewers enjoyed getting a sneak peek behind the scenes and seeing the care and creativity that goes into every biscuit we produce.”

Chocolate and Tahini Pudding

Made using the all-in-one method, this easy dessert baked in the slow cooker is guaranteed to impress – and help banish the winter blues! Serve with slices of banana and cream for an extra indulgent touch.

Ingred I

ents

• 3 ripe bananas, roughly mashed

• 50g salted butter, softened

• 100g light brown soft sugar

• 1 egg, beaten

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 2 tbsp tahini

• 5 tbsp milk

• 75g self-raising flour

• 2 tbsp cocoa powder

• ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

• 100g plain dark chocolate (70%), chopped, or chocolate chips to serve

• Sliced bananas (optional)

• Softly whipped cream or pouring cream

method

1. Take 2 large sheets of non-stick baking paper and double-line the slow cooker bowl.

2. Add all the pudding ingredients, except the plain dark chocolate, to a large mixing bowl. Whisk together until you have a smooth batter. This is easier if you have an electric whisk. If you don’t, add and whisk in the ingredients one at a time, following the order in which they are listed above.

3. Stir in the chopped chocolate or chocolate chips and pour the mixture into the prepared slow cooker. Level off using a spatula or the back of a spoon. Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours until the pudding has firmed up (excluding the melted chocolate chunks, which will create little pools of chocolate). The top will look glossy when cooked.

4. To serve, spoon from the slow cooker, or carefully lift out and cut into wedges. Serve warm or cold with slices of fresh banana, if you like, and cream.

Moreton Hall Ranked as a Top 20 Girls’ Boarding School in the UK

Moreton Hall has been named one of the Top 20 girls’ boarding schools in the UK, ranking 17th nationally in the Best-Schools.co.uk (Education Advisers) 2025 Independent School League Tables.

The school’s position places it ahead of several larger, nationally recognised names, underlining the strength of Moreton Hall’s academic culture and its individualised approach to sixth form study.

The ranking reflects Moreton Hall’s consistently strong A Level outcomes. The school’s most recent results saw students achieve 50% A to A*, with 24% at A*, and 100% of leavers progressing to university, including many securing places at highly competitive Russell Group institutions.

Michael Brewer, Principal of Moreton Hall, said, “We are delighted to be recognised among the UK’s leading girls’ boarding schools. This ranking is a

tribute to the ambition and character of our girls, and to the expertise and care of our staff, who ensure every student is known, supported and challenged to achieve her best. We’re especially proud that our results translate into real opportunities beyond school, with every leaver moving on to university and so many progressing to highly competitive courses.”

Best-schools.co.uk’s league tables are compiled by Education Advisers and are based on publicly available examination results and verified submissions from schools.

The girls’ boarding schools table is ranked by the percentage of A Level entries awarded A and A grades*, with minimum cohort and boarding thresholds required for inclusion.

The league tables are available on best-schools. co.uk.

Bella liu: From moreton Hall to tHe asian equestrian stage

Moreton Hall Upper Sixth student Bella Liu has represented Team China at one of Asia’s most prestigious equestrian fixtures, competing in dressage at the FEI Asian Equestrian Championships in Pattaya, Thailand.

The 16th FEI Asian Equestrian Championships brought together more than 80 riders and horses from 13 countries, across five disciplines: Jumping, Eventing, Dressage, Para Dressage and Endurance.

Bella, the youngest dressage rider in the competition field, competed on an international stage alongside established equestrian nations including Japan, South Korea and Thailand. She delivered a calm and composed test, demonstrating impressive maturity, focus and poise against far more experienced opponents.

Reflecting on the experience, Bella said:

“Competing for my country carries a much deeper sense of responsibility than individual events. This competition opened my eyes to a wider world and showed me how much more I can grow. I will continue working hard in both my studies and equestrian training, and I hope one day to stand on even greater podiums and achieve my dreams.

“I am incredibly thankful for the support from Moreton Hall. The school has been very flexible with my timetable to accommodate my weekly training and competitions. My teachers have also given me tremendous academic support, allowing me to pursue my equestrian dream without falling behind in my studies.”

Harry is driven to distraction

Harry’s big sister was having driving lessons and he was shocked. Apparently, the lessons were going well and she was quite good at it! But, was she putting herself, and others in harm’s way he wondered. “Is driving really a safe way to travel Mum?” he asked over breakfast one morning. “I guess it depends on the driver” she replied, “which is why your sister is being trained to drive safely” she continued. Harry hadn’t thought of lessons as training but it made sense.

On the TV that night Harry heard about new laws being suggested to try and reduce accidents driving – some of them directed at young drivers particularly. He found out that young drivers, or being a passenger in a car with a young driver, was the most dangerous thing a teenager could do. It was four times more likely to kill a teenager than drugs were! More than 2,000 teenagers were killed in that year. Apparently, his developing brain was wired up to be excited and stimulated but the bit of his brain that assessed risk consequences was still under construction! Not a good combination when behind the wheel of a potential killing machine thought Harry. One in every five teenagers had an accident in their first year of driving and the risk was highest on the sort of country roads that surround Oswestry. Just to add to his concern was the fact that boy drivers were even more at risk than girls. I wonder what I can do to make me safer he pondered.

or other things was a factor and not driving after drinking or drugs was important. He discovered a thing called defensive driving. It really seemed to be safe driving: not speeding, giving way if in doubt, not overtaking unless completely sure, not changing lanes more than necessary and putting your phone away. Interestingly he found out that the more friends you have in the car the more likely you were to crash! There were times of the day that were riskier too – from 4-7pm when roads were busy, and the early hours of Sunday mornings. I guess that’s tiredness and a Saturday night out thought Harry.

Apparently, his developing brain was wired up to be excited and stimulated but the bit of his brain that assessed risk consequences was still under construction!

He found a government report on this subject. Apparently, there were several commonalities to these accidents: teenage brains did not do well with sleep loss, lack of experience meant that many young drivers did not see the risk in certain situations early enough, being distracted by friends, music

Now Harry was worried about his sister. Sure, she could be annoying but he had known her a long time, my whole life, he laughed. He decided to do something to help her “training.” “I have produced a guide for travelling in the car,” announced Harry, looking directly at his sister who had a bit of a smile on her face – a good start he thought. “I know it’s a bit odd but I’ve sort of got used to you.” She was looking more puzzled now. He continued: “I want you to be safe.” He gave the list to her. She started to read it out loud:” Leave on journeys a bit early – speeding and rushing causes accidents. Avoid small country roads if possible. Always wear a seat belt. Put your phone away. Beware of too many friends as passengers. Limit distractions. Make sure you can see Ok (Harry had already paced out 20 metres and checked he could read the numberplate on Dad’s car). Make sure the car is roadworthy and have a first aid kit. No drinking or drugs when driving. Limit night driving, especially on a Sunday morning! Learn to drive defensively.” He finished it with “Stay safe.”

His sister paused, smiled, stood up and hugged him.

Tune into the joys of singing – it will do you a power of good.

As the new year begins and the January blues take hold, there’s no better time to find a new hobby to lift the spirits – and, for many, singing could be the answer. We’ve all sung our hearts out at some point in our lives, whether at school as a child, at festivals and concerts, or in the privacy of the shower. It’s undoubtedly a great way to lose yourself in your favourite tunes, but did you know that in the long term, belting out a good song could actually improve your health – both physical and mental –and help you forge closer social bonds?

Then and now

Since humans first walked the earth, singing and chanting have possessed a certain power to enhance well-being and bring people together. It’s a universal language that transcends cultural barriers and connects people from all walks of life. So it makes sense that many GPs are starting to refer patients to choirs or singing groups as part of a policy of social prescribing for a range of mental health issues. One of the most noticeable benefits is the immediate boost in your mood. When you sing, your body releases ‘happy hormones’, such as dopamine and endorphins, giving you a natural high and reducing stress and anxiety. Studies have also reported increases in oxytocin, a socialbonding hormone, which may explain why group singing is such a great ice-breaker, and can help those who suffer from loneliness become more involved in their community.

Body of evidence

Mental health aside, studies have suggested that singing, whether in the comfort of your own home or as part of a group, can lower blood pressure and even soothe chronic pain. One 2004 study found that participants who sang produced higher levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody which acts as an important first line of defence for the immune system. What’s more, singing involves deep breathing, which can help with relaxation and respiratory health.

So, now you know the health benefits, you might be wondering how you can incorporate more singing into your life. Studies have shown that singing for as little as five minutes can make a difference, but joining a singing group is the best way to keep up the habit. Local community choirs are usually open to all levels and even offer trial sessions or open rehearsals, so you can test the waters. You don’t need to be religious; many choirs are now attracting a new crowd by adding well-known, mainstream music to their repertoire.

So, whether you’re looking to improve your mental health, meet new people or find a new pastime, why not limber up your vocal cords and discover the joy of singing? It’s simple, inclusive, free and has a wealth of benefits – in fact, it’s a perfect way to start the year on a positive note!

Don’t Let Back Pain Stop You in 2026

As 2026 approaches, many of us are thinking about fresh starts getting fitter, moving more, and finally doing the things we have been putting off. Yet for thousands of people across Shropshire, back pain quietly dictates daily life. It limits how long you can sit, how far you can walk, how well you sleep, and sometimes even how confident you feel in your own body. The good news is, this back pain doesn’t have to define your year ahead.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy and also one of the most misunderstood. Many assume it means something is damaged or that rest is the safest option. In reality, most back pain isn’t caused by serious injury and avoiding movement often makes things worse. The spine is strong, adaptable, and designed to move. With the right guidance, most people can return to normal life and often come back stronger than before.

At Shropshire Physiotherapy, we see people from all walks of life…desk workers struggling after years of sitting, tradespeople with recurring flare ups, runners side lined by stiffness, and parents worn down by lifting and poor sleep. A common theme runs through all of them: fear. Fear of making things worse. Fear of pain returning. Fear that this is just how it is now. Our role is to replace that fear with understanding, confidence, and a clear plan.

Back pain is rarely about one single moment or movement. It’s usually the result of a combination of factors like reduced strength, limited movement variety, stress, fatigue, and long periods of inactivity. Modern life doesn’t help. We sit more than ever, move less, and expect our bodies to perform when asked without the preparation they need. Over time, this shows up as pain.

Physiotherapy isn’t just about hands on treatment, although that can play a helpful role. It’s about education, reassurance, and

progressive movement. When you understand what’s happening in your back, pain becomes less threatening. When you start moving again in a graded, supported way, your nervous system calms down, and your body rebuilds trust in movement.

One of the biggest myths we challenge is the idea that you must be pain free before you move. In most cases, waiting for pain to completely disappear only prolongs recovery. Instead, we focus on what you can do safely now, gradually expanding your capacity week by week. This approach not only reduces pain but lowers the risk of future episodes.

Looking ahead to 2026, ask yourself some honest questions. Are you avoiding activities you once enjoyed because of your back? Are you planning your days around pain, stiffness, or flare ups? Have you accepted limitations that you were never meant to live with long term? If so, this is your sign to act.

Early support matters. The longer pain persists, the more it can affect confidence, mood, sleep, and overall health. Addressing back pain is not about chasing a quick fix it’s about building resilience. Stronger muscles, better movement habits, improved posture under load, and the confidence to live actively again.

At Shropshire Physiotherapy, our goal is simple; to help you move well and live without fear of your back. We work with you to understand your lifestyle, your goals, and your challenges. Whether your aim is to sit comfortably at work, return to sport, or simply get through the day without constant discomfort, there’s a clear path forward.

Don’t let back pain be the reason you hold back in 2026. Your spine is not fragile. Your body is capable of change. With the right support, this can be the year you stop managing pain and start moving forward again. Book now via  www.shropshirephysiotherapy.co.uk

JUST THE

Picture this: breakfast in Somerset, lunch in London, dinner with a friend in a Paris bistro and breakfast the following morning as the sun comes up over the Côte d’Azur. An impossible dream? Not if you take the train with an Interrail pass, as I did recently.

Say Interrailing and you think of students but, while young people get the cheapest deal, these flexible rail passes are available to intrepid travellers of all ages. And, increasingly, people are waking up to this wonderful and inexpensive way of experiencing Europe. Under 27s get a discount of 25% on the adult rate, while seniors over 60 receive 10% off.

Realising a dream

I’d never travelled when I was young, but over the years the idea of pulling into some of the great cities of Europe on a train had never lost its appeal. And now, with my son in Rome learning Italian, I finally had the opportunity. So when Interrail (also known as Eurail) advertised a 20%off sale, I snapped up a pass giving me seven travel days in a month and built an itinerary around meeting up with him.

you hop on board. I spent many happy hours researching routes and trains. Just the sound of some of those names – Rome, Vienna, Prague – was like a siren song evoking magic and romance.

Some routes require seat reservations on top of your Interrail pass, which adds to the cost, and, unless you’re very spontaneous, booking accommodation (with an option to cancel) is also wise if you’re a woman travelling alone, as I was. I was able to keep to budget by taking two night trains, booking into an all-women sleeper compartment or a separate mini-cabin.

Modern Grand Tour

At times, I felt I was doing the 21st-century equivalent of the Grand Tour, discovering some of the great cultural wonders of Europe. Indelible images in my mind are the Old Masters in deserted medieval palaces in the gritty port city of Genoa, the enduring grandeur of the Pantheon in Rome and Michelangelo’s David in Florence, where buildings on the banks of the Arno were bathed in a golden light.

In Central Europe the delights and (sometimes painful) insights were just as intense: going to see Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ at the magnificent Vienna State Opera and, in Prague, almost being able to hear history screaming from every cobbled street, from the 14th-century Charles Bridge to memorials to courageous individuals who gave their life during the Second World War and the Velvet Revolution in 1989. In just under three weeks, the train had taken the strain and I had seen and learnt so much.
