Cultivating a legacy that blooms in every border Introducing Anna Krapivina, Weston Park’s head gardener In 40 years, the visitors wandering the manicured paths of Weston Park won’t know her name. They won’t know the girl who, at 10-years-old, carved a secret ‘pleasure ground’ out of the Latvian wild, or the woman who walked away from an HR degree to follow the pull of the soil. But they will know her work.

Anna Krapivina, Weston’s head gardener, understands that she is a temporary steward of a living history. From restoring the neglected grounds of Winston Churchill’s former home to managing the complex water gardens of Sussex, her career has been defined by resurrection and restoration.

Now, as she marks her second full year at the helm of the gardens on the grand estate which sits on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border, she isn’t just planting for the next season. She is joining a silent, centuries-old lineage of hands that have shaped this horizon - knowing that while her identity may eventually fade into the archives, her legacy will bloom in every bough and border she nurtures today.

Anna was born in rural Latvia and grew up on a farm surrounded by nature. She loved playing in the woods and at the age of 10 picked up a gardening magazine 8

and created her own pleasure ground where she would experiment with different plants, shrubs and trees learning along the way. Encouraged by her parents, she studied HR at university, but the love of the garden kept pulling her back, it is where she is at her happiest.

She enrolled at Hadlow College in Kent which specialises in agriculture, horticulture and conservation management, after which her career blossomed until she found herself as Assistant Head Gardener at Templeton House in London, once the home of Winston Churchill.

But Anna had always dreamed of working in a ‘big old house’ and successfully applied to Weston Park, joining the team in April 2024 and inheriting a huge legacy following the retirement of Martin Gee after 55 years in the role.

“My first task was bringing the team together to work more closely with each other in different parts of the gardens that they may have not necessarily worked in before. My aim was to encourage and teach new skills, new practices to enable the team to look at the gardens differently.”

Anna oversees the management of 74 acres of gardens with six permanent staff, eight long-term volunteers and a very healthy supply of work experience students. In addition, she is responsible for supplying

fresh flowers and houseplants to the house and holiday cottages, leading public tours and talks, and collaborating with the head chef for seasonal menu planning and planting in the Walled Kitchen Garden.

Throw in a ruby anniversary and the diversity of her role is clear: to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Weston Park Foundation, the independent charity that owns and maintains Weston Park, Anna and her team have planted a whole host of ruby coloured flowers so the park will be filled with dark red gemstones everywhere the public turns when they visit this year.

All of this while balancing the maintenance of the rolling Capability Brown landscape and public areas, and the ongoing restoration of the gardens and garden structures.

“Our gardens need to grow, flourish and give something back,” said Anna. “Just to exist for display, I think is pointless. People and gardens should work for each other.

“I like to imagine the house itself as a person and the gardens as the clothes they wear and accessories they carry.

The gardens are what create that striking first impression.”

Anna’s gardening passions are centred around restoration, developing and nurturing new garden schemes and watching them come, literally, to life. She is especially keen on balancing tradition with evolution.

“We have to keep changing. Plants that were fashionable 50 years ago, may not necessarily work today and that’s fine. Regular visitors to our gardens don’t want to see the same thing again and again, they want to see innovation, creativity and change.

“But equally, they want to maintain a sense of

belonging, of connection, so that they can say to their grandchildren for example: ‘see that huge tree there? I remember when it was just a sapling’.

“There are so many layers to the Weston Park estate, ancient and modern, and I’m still discovering new things every day.

“I love working in the same beds that have been worked in for generations, feeling the connection of ongoing history. I love knowing that generations of gardeners have worked here before me to create all of this, and it’s important to recognise that – even if we don’t know their names.

“A bit like me – in years to come nobody will remember my name but hopefully the legacy of the work I do will live on.”

Anna will host a series of public events to help celebrate 40 years of the Weston Park Foundation including Lunch with the Head Gardener on June 24, September 16 and November 11 for visitors interested in finding out more about Anna and her work at Weston.

She will also host a Rhododendron Walk on April 30.

For 65 years the County of Salop Steam Engine Society has been at the forefront of commemorating engineering excellence and demonstrating the farming methods of yesteryear. The 2026 Rally is a family-friendly, two-day event that promises to delight visitors to the beautiful setting of Onslow Park, Shrewsbury. The 2026 Rally takes place on the August Bank Holiday, Sunday 30th August and Monday 31 August. Shrewsbury Steam Rally is ‘Shropshire’s Largest Steam & Vintage Vehicle Rally’ and is considered to be one of the best in the UK. Organisers say it is Shrewsbury’s ultimate family event where visitors can step back in time to experience the vintage thrills and tradition of yesteryear.

The event has over 1200 highly-entertaining attractions that include the wonderful spectacle of working steam engines and beautifully preserved classic vehicles from yesteryear. On each day the ‘Grand Parade of Steam’ is a highly-popular and majestic cavalcade of Showman’s engines, traction engines, Sentinel waggons, and steam rollers. The parade showcases a superb variety of fabulously decorated steam-powered vehicles that circle the arena set to nostalgic music and poetry – a memorable highlight of the two-day event –, and with a final flurry of their whistles it is always an exciting

A very lucky couple called at one of our recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver British coins.We paid them over £1600 just for the coins alone.

New lifestyle shop opens in Newport A Newport entrepreneur has opened a new highend lifestyle store after spotting what he describes as “a real gap in the market” for fashion, homeware, floristry and art all under one roof.

Mark Turner, 41, who moved to the town a year ago, said The Urban Collection was inspired

by Coco 64 - a former highstreet boutique run by interior designer Kim Day, which traded successfully for a decade before closing in March 2025.

The new store sits at the end of St Mary’s Street, a location Mark admits is “a bit of a risk” at a time when the high street is struggling.

But he says the reaction so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The high street is a dying trend, really, and this isn’t a central spot - but the response online and on social media has been amazing,” he said.

The shop interior was designed by longtime friend and the former owner of Coco 64, Kim Day, who Mark describes as his mentor.

“Kim’s incredible. I couldn’t have done it without her,” he said. Kim will also return monthly to dress the windows.

The shop stocks a mix of handcrafted products, fragrances, 20

exclusive artwork and quirky pieces sourced from Paris, along with alternative fashion lines with what Mark describes as a “Paris Vogue” feel.

“I’ve always loved interiors and a cleanliving lifestyle,” he said.

“We’ve handpicked everything.

This vision has been about 12 months in the making - it was

just about finding the right shop.

We’re really excited and I’m looking forward to welcoming everyone.”

The new store, which opened on 1 April, is open Tuesday to Saturdays between 9am and 5.30pm.

How a trip to Portugal helped me answer the question: stick, twist or move on?

I recently took a bit of a holiday from my life.

I’d realised I was going in circles with the same “problems”, trying to solve them with the same thinking.

There’s a quote that says something like, the mind that creates the problem can’t be the one to solve it.

So, I decided to change my mind by changing the input.

I went to Portugal for three weeks and did a WorkAway (voluntary work in exchange for room and board), swapping my usual routine for something completely different.

New place, new people, different conversations. Using my body more than my mind. Being outside instead of behind a screen. Giving myself new challenges and fresh perspectives.

And it worked.

I came back feeling lighter, inspired and motivated, excited for what’s next.

Before the trip, I felt stuck. In limbo.

Looking back, I realise I was wrestling with a question many of us face at different points in life: do I stick, twist or move on?

Now, something has shifted and things are flowing again.

The experience reminded me of the power of stepping away. I’ve always been a big believer in this. If I’m struggling to see a solution, I step away from the problem - usually for a walk. It’s amazing how much clarity and calm a walk can bring. This was simply a bigger version of the same idea.

Not everyone can disappear for a few weeks, but the principle is the same: do something different. Give your mind something new to play with.

It might be as simple as taking a different route, listening to something unfamiliar, learning a new skill, or meeting new people.

New experiences encourage our brains to think in fresh ways, shifting our perspectives, our energy and our sense of what’s possible.

Sometimes, that’s all it takes to get things moving again.

My time away also reminded me how much I enjoy being active, working with my hands, spending time outdoors and exerting physical energy rather than mental energy.

These things make me feel good, so it’s important that I make space for them in my life.

It also got me thinking about work.

A lot of my 1:1 life coaching is done online, with clients across the UK and around the world. My work also involves marketing, content creation and planning, all from behind a screen. Reiki sessions aside, I spend a lot of time on a computer or mobile phone, which can leave me feeling drained.

For a while, I’d been wondering what to do about that. More inperson workshops? More Reiki?

Something entirely new?

For a long time, that last option felt like failure. But while I was away, I caught myself asking, “What’s next?” and instead of fear, I felt excitement. I couldn’t ignore that.

So, to stick, twist or move on? The trip helped me answer that question for myself.

The answer I’ve come to is twist.

I still love supporting people to create space mentally, emotionally and energetically, and to move forward in ways that feel right for

them. At the same time, for my own overall wellbeing, I want to be more active, practical and outdoors. So, alongside life coaching and Reiki, I’m expanding into home and garden care, supporting others’ wellbeing in practical ways too.

It can be scary to admit that something isn’t working for you anymore, or to try something your inner critic insists you have no business doing. But if we never try, we never know.

Sometimes it doesn’t take dismantling your whole life.

Sometimes it’s simply a small shift towards something that feels lighter, more expansive and more aligned with who you are.

Newport Musical Theatre Academy Deborah Owen, Founder & Principal This year marks a special milestone for me as I celebrate a silver anniversary – it’s 25 years since I cofounded Shropshire’s first Training and Performance Youth Theatre Academy.

Back in 2001, we opened our doors with a production of Fame at

Telford Theatre. What started as a dream has grown into a thriving academy based in Newport, which I now run alongside my daughter, Jocelyn. Together, we have proudly secured Musical Theatre International licences for some of the world’s most iconic productions, achieving several firsts along the way, including becoming the first local academy to stage Les Misérables: School Edition and obtain the licence for Miss Saigon Youth Edition.

I founded the academy because I recognised a huge gap in the training available to young performers in Shropshire. Having worked in theatre, music and dance from the age of three, I understood that pursuing a career in the performing arts often requires knowledge and opportunities that aren’t always readily available in our beautiful but sometimes naïve county. I wanted to bring that insight and experience to talented young people closer to home.

My own journey began with classical ballet, tap and jazz, followed by singing, piano, clarinet and violin. I later gained vocal

qualifications through the Royal College of Music and earned a Performing Arts degree in London.

Over the years, I have toured with a 12-piece soul band, performed in a Meat Loaf tribute show and, most recently, filmed for a Netflix series.

One of my greatest achievements has been seeing students progress to the West End and television careers.

Through LAMDA examinations and mentoring senior students to teach my methods, I continue to invest in the next generation. This summer, one of my students, Molly Millward, has secured a place with the British Youth Theatre.

Despite being told by teachers and even family members to choose a different career, I have always followed what was in my bones.

Duck n Dive Swimming School Emma Rudge, Director I run a swimming school, and it truly is my passion. I’ve been a swimming instructor for many years and teaching children to swim is one of the most rewarding things you can do, because you’re giving them a life skill and a love of the water.

When the opportunity came up to buy the business, I knew it was the

right move. Since then, we’ve gone from strength to strength, more than doubling the number of children in the pool.

The aquatics and swim school world has always had strong women in it, but stepping into the role of business owner bought a different set of challenges. I’ve had to be confident in both my expertise and my authority but honestly, that confidence has grown alongside the business. Owning the business has also given me the autonomy to bring in fresh ideas and expand what we offer in ways I’d always wanted to.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the training pathway I’ve built for young people at the school. It’s open to all boys and girls alike and it starts with the swimmers who have grown up with us. At 14, they can begin assisting in lessons, earning a wage while they learn the skills and knowledge needed to qualify as instructors. By 17, they have a profession and a future in an industry they already love. I mentor them through every step. Watching someone go from a nervous young assistant to a skilled, self-assured instructor is just as rewarding as watching a child swim their first length.

Soul Living Elisa, Owner If you’d asked me a couple of years ago whether I’d be opening a home interiors shop in the heart of Shrewsbury, I’d probably have said no. We accidentally acquired Soul Shropshire, but sometimes the best opportunities come from the most unexpected places.

I’d worked with the business for around six years, providing marketing

support, so knew it well and believed in it. When the opportunity came to take over in February 2025, it felt right. What we didn’t anticipate was the scale of the challenge. Alongside a much-loved brand, we inherited significant financial pressure and a business that needed rebuilding from the ground up.

There wasn’t a quick fix. We simply had to get to work.

Rather than trying to grow quickly, we stripped everything back and returned to the original purpose of Soul Shropshire: creating products that make people feel good in their homes. Every decision since has been guided by quality, intention and rebuilding trust in the brand.

For the last year, my house became our headquarters. Stock was stored there, orders packed, and most evenings spent working through the realities of rebuilding a business. Having an endless supply of calming fragrances and essential oils around the house was probably the only thing keeping me grounded.

The biggest lesson has been simple: if you believe in something,

you keep going. You work through the uncertainty, make difficult decisions and focus on building something solid.

Today, that work has led to something I’m incredibly proud of, the opening of our first shop in Shrewsbury. Soul Living is more than a candle shop. Alongside Soul candles and home fragrance collections, we’ve introduced carefully selected furniture, homeware and a range of unique, characterful pieces designed to bring personality into the home. We’ve worked with high-quality suppliers to create a space that feels inspiring, welcoming and a little different from the ordinary high street offerings.

The response so far has been genuinely humbling. Seeing people connect with what we’ve created makes all the hard work feel worthwhile, and I’m excited to continue building Soul Living into a destination people return to again and again.

A Bridgnorth therapist is bringing an emerging evidence based chronic pain approach to Shropshire following specialist training linked to internationally recognised research in the field.

Katie Rothwell, founder of Katie Rothwell Therapies based in Bridgnorth, recently attended a masterclass in Manchester led by Howard Schubiner, whose work around pain reprocessing therapy, nervous system sensitisation and emotional awareness is attracting increasing global attention.

The timing coincides with this week’s UK release of Dr Schubiner’s new book, Unlearn Your Pain, and an interview recorded with Rangan Chatterjee “Feel Better - Live More” as part of his popular wellbeing podcast series.

According to the latest Health Survey for England published by NHS Digital, more than one in four adults now report living with chronic pain (Source: NHS Digital – Health Survey for England).

Katie, a former RAF Physical Education Officer who now works with people suffering persistent symptoms including fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, fatigue and long Covid, said awareness is growing around the role the nervous system can play in ongoing pain conditions.

Katie now incorporates elements of pain education, nervous system regulation, emotional awareness, nutrition, sleep and movement into her own BEAT Pain approach - Brain, Energy, Activity and Therapy - which she delivers through one-toone sessions, group support and workshops.

“The science and understanding around chronic pain is evolving massively,” Katie said.

“More and more research is looking at how the nervous system, stress, emotions and past experiences can contribute to persistent symptoms, even when structural injuries have healed.

“People are often told they simply have to live with chronic pain, but many are now beginning to understand there may be more going on beneath the surface.”

Katie’s own experience with debilitating back

pain first led her into studying the mind-body connection after conventional medical routes failed to resolve her symptoms.

“I was in the RAF as a PE instructor at the time and I suddenly found myself unable to even pick my child up because of the pain,” she said.

“My husband was serving in Afghanistan and I was effectively solo parenting while trying to cope physically and emotionally.

“I went through the usual medical pathways and was prescribed medication which left me unable to function properly. Eventually I started learning about pain education and the nervous system and it completely changed my understanding of chronic symptoms.”

She said many of the people approaching her feel exhausted after years of searching for answers.

“A lot of clients come to me feeling frightened, stuck and unheard,” Katie said.

“Many have spent years believing their body is broken or damaged beyond repair, when often the nervous system itself has become highly sensitised and overprotective.

“Once people begin to understand that pain does not always equal damage, it can be incredibly empowering.”

Katie said clients have reported improvements in confidence, mobility, stress levels and day-to-day functioning through the approach.

Katie added that she hopes to work more closely with businesses and organisations across Shropshire as awareness grows around the links between stress, burnout, nervous system overload and persistent health conditions.

“There is a huge conversation now happening around workplace wellbeing and the impact chronic stress can have on the body,” she said.

“I’d love to connect with more businesses who genuinely want to support the health and wellbeing of their teams in a proactive way.”

Katie stresses that clients should always seek appropriate medical advice to rule out underlying conditions before exploring chronic pain support approaches.

Since its first mission in 1991, the charity has grown into one of the UK’s busiest and most advanced air ambulance services, responding to more than 80,000 missions and delivering lifesaving treatment to patients when every second counts.

Fungal nail infections can be both frustrating and embarrassing, affecting confidence in sandals and when barefoot. As a qualified Foot Health Practitioner at Shropshire Foot Health, I see this common problem every week, and the good news is that it’s treatable with the right care and consistency.

What Exactly Is a Fungal Nail Infection?

Fungal nail infections, known medically as onychomycosis, are extremely common and occur when fungal organisms invade the nail bed, nail plate, or surrounding skin. They are often caused by the same fungi responsible for athlete’s foot.

The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments such as sweaty shoes, gyms, and changing rooms.

Once established, it can spread quickly and is often difficult to clear without proper treatment.

Typical signs include: • Discolouration (often yellow, brown, or white streaks) • Thickened or brittle nails • Flaky debris under the nail edge • A misshapen nail or separation from the nail bed • In advanced cases, discomfort when wearing shoes Fungal nails can affect anyone but are more common with age and in people with diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system.

As the infection progresses, the nail can become thickened, brittle, distorted, and difficult to trim.

Why Fungal Nails Don’t Heal on Their Own

One of the most common misconceptions I hear at Shropshire Foot Health is, “I thought it would just grow out.”

Unfortunately, fungal nail infections rarely resolve without treatment. The fungus lives between the nail and the nail bed, an area that many over-the-counter treatments struggle to reach effectively. Left untreated, it can spread to other nails or the surrounding skin, leading to athlete’s foot and further infection.

Fungal nails can also affect confidence, with many people avoiding open-toed shoes because of their appearance.

Steps Towards Healthy, Clear Nails

I often remind patients that treating fungal nails requires patience. Toenails grow slowly, so visible improvement can take several months.

Simple habits include: • Keeping feet clean and dry, especially between the toes • Wearing cotton or bamboo socks and changing them daily • Avoiding sharing nail clippers or files • Disinfecting shoes regularly using an antifungal spray or UV shoe sanitiser • Letting nails “breathe” by going polish-free every few weeks These simple measures help reduce the risk of reinfection and support overall foot health.

Cancer Champions create lasting change Over 1,000 volunteers across the region have stepped forward to help raise awareness of cancer, as a regional initiative continues to grow in reach and impact.

The Cancer Champions training programme is fully funded by Lingen Davies Cancer Support as part of the LiveLife Cancer Awareness initiative and aims to give people the confidence and knowledge to recognise the signs and symptoms of cancer, encourage open conversations, and promote the importance of early diagnosis and screening.

The initiative was first launched in 2022 by Lingen Davies Cancer Support in partnership with NHS Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Oswestry Community Action. Part of a national NHS England programme tackling health inequalities, it expanded into Mid Wales and beyond to support local communities.

Helen Davies, Powys Cancer Champion Coordinator for Lingen Davies, said the training was playing a vital role in saving lives.

“Cancer Champions training is about helping people better understand the signs and symptoms of cancer, while also breaking down myths and making the language around cancer easier to understand,” she said.

“Crucially, we emphasise that early presentation and screening saves lives. The sooner people get symptoms checked and attend screening appointments, the better the outcomes. Screening can often detect issues before they become serious.”

She added: “Cancer doesn’t discriminate – one in two of us will be affected by it in our lifetime. By encouraging more everyday conversations, we’re giving people the confidence to seek advice from their GP sooner rather than later.”

Recent sessions have included outreach as far as Aberystwyth, with local organisations helping to spread the message further along the Ceredigion coast.

With a target of training at least 100 new Cancer Champions each year, organisers are encouraging more individuals, groups, and businesses to get involved.

Rebecca Peters, Shropshire Cancer Champion Coordinator at Oswestry Community Action, said: “‘Oswestry Community Action is delighted to work in partnership with Lingen Davies Cancer Support to train and support Cancer Champions across the area. It’s fantastic that we now have over 1,000 Cancer Champions who are trained to have everyday conversations with friends, family and colleagues about the early signs and symptoms of cancer and the cancer screening programmes.

“We provide continued support for our Cancer Champions by sending monthly newsletters and regular project updates alongside hosting in-person catch-ups and further information sessions to ensure everyone is aware of any new and relevant topics that could arise in their role.

“We are so fortunate to have Cancer Champions from the local community who are really making a difference to the people around them in such a positive way,” she added.

Last year the charity launched its most ambitious appeal – the £5million Sunflower Appeal to grow cancer services across the region through the development of a new Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital by 2029.

This development will double chemotherapy capacity across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Mid Wales, and enable local people to access the care they need, where they need, quicker.

Fuerteventura Blessed with year-round sunshine, gorgeous beaches and otherworldly landscapes – all just a four-hour flight from the UK – Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island. It goes a little under the radar compared to its popular neighbours, Tenerife and Lanzarote, and moves at a slower pace. But don’t be fooled into thinking there’s no adventure to be had here.

Here are a handful of the island’s highlights.

Immerse yourself in Corralejo’s surf culture Corralejo is a bustling resort at the northernmost tip of the island. Once a quiet fishing village, it’s now a popular beach resort with a beautiful marina and trendy shops, tapas bars and restaurants.

The resort attracts a surfer crowd, so on a gusty day you can see swathes of surfers, windsurfers, kitesurfers and hydrofoilers taking to the waves.

Join them by renting some equipment or taking lessons at one of the many surfing schools.

Alternatively, lie back on the beach and watch.

Step back in time in Betancuria If you’re travelling through the middle of the island, be sure to stop in Betancuria. This pretty little town nestled in the mountains is where Spanish colonists built their capital in 1404. It’s well preserved and an easy-to-follow trail tells you about the town’s history. There’s also a good handful of restaurants offering authentic Canarian food, making Betancuria a great lunch stop.

Visit the uninhabited Isla de Lobos A short ferry journey from Corralejo lies the nature reserve of Isla de Lobos. Walking trails crisscross the island, offering the opportunity to spot native flora and breeding seabirds. There’s also a pretty, sheltered bay that’s perfect for taking a dip.

The crystal-clear waters here are straight from a postcard, so bring a snorkel and search for sea life.

Make a beeline for the best beaches There are loads of beaches to choose from, but some of the most picture-perfect stretches of sand can be found in Fuerteventura’s Jandía peninsula in the south.

Cofete is a particular highlight; you can only reach this secluded beach via a bumpy dirt road, but your reward is more than 12 kilometres of unspoilt golden sand backed by dramatic mountains. This stunning landscape featured as a Star Wars film location.

Betancuria

Explore the island’s volcanic terrain Swap flip-flops for hiking boots and you’ll be rewarded with some of the most striking scenery in the Canaries. The Ajuy caves were created by lava 100 million years ago. They can be accessed via a gentle walk along the black sand beach. A

Risotto with pan-fried scallops Bursting with home-grown flavour, British asparagus is in season until the end of the month, so pick up a bundle and make the most of this nutritious and versatile veg.

IngredIents

• 250g British asparagus, trimmed and cut into thirds • 30g butter, plus 20g extra • 2 echalion shallots, peeled and chopped finely • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 200g arborio rice • 4 tbsp white wine • 500ml hot fish or vegetable stock • 200g scallops, dried on kitchen paper and seasoned • Finely grated rind of 1 lemon • 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 50g Parmesan cheese, grated

method 1. Bring a pan of water to boil and briefly blanch the asparagus.

Drain, refresh in cold water and set to one side.

2. Melt the 30g butter in a large pan. Add the shallot and garlic and cook gently until soft, for about 5 minutes. Add the rice and allow to cook, stirring for a minute or so, then pour in the wine and allow to bubble.

3. Add a ladleful of hot stock and stir until absorbed, keep going until all the stock is incorporated.

4. When the risotto is almost ready, add the asparagus and give it a stir. Put a lid on, turn off the heat off and let it rest.

5. Heat the extra 20g butter in a frying pan and when foaming, add the scallops and allow to cook for a couple of minutes until they are nicely browned. Turn them over and cook on the other side.

6. Meanwhile add the lemon zest, chopped chives and seasoning to the risotto.

INGREDIENTS

Browned butter & almond fruit cake This cake is the epitome of summer: it’s sticky, jammy, fresh and not too sweet – and it’s just dreamy with a dollop of crème fraîche on top!

• 250g unsalted butter • 370g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra for dusting • 200g ground almonds • 80g plain flour • A pinch of sea salt • 220g egg whites (save the yolks for tiramisu!)

• 3 tsp vanilla extract • 100g raspberries • 1 ripe peach, sliced into half-moons (tinned also work well) • Crème fraîche, to serve

Serves 8 generously Preparation time 30-35 minutes Cooking time 1 hour 15 minutes, plus cooling

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C, fan 150°C, gas mark 3. Grease and line a 21cm round tin.

2. Melt the butter in a pan over a medium-high heat and continue to cook until it starts to brown, swirling the pan and keeping an eye on it so it doesn’t turn from brown to burnt.

Once the milk solids have gone a nutty brown, take the pan off the heat and leave to cool.

3. Whisk together the icing sugar, almonds, flour and salt in a large bowl.

4. Add the egg whites and vanilla and stir until combined, then add the cooled brown butter and mix again.

5. Pour the batter into the tin and put the tin in the fridge for 15 minutes until the batter has slightly firmed up.

6. Sprinkle the fruit on top, pressing the berries and peach slices halfway into the batter.

7. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, covering loosely with foil after 50 minutes so it doesn’t brown too much on top.

8. Let the cake cool completely in the tin, then serve with a light dusting of icing sugar and a dollop of crème fraîche.

Money matters

P11D season is approaching – and employers should not leave it too late As summer approaches, many employers will be thinking about holidays, year-end admin and planning ahead. But there is another date worth circling in the diary: the deadline for reporting employee benefits and expenses.

If your business provides staff with benefits in kind – such as company cars, private medical insurance, low-interest loans or other perks – these may need to be reported to HMRC each year. It is one of those compliance tasks that can easily slip down the to-do list but missing it can prove expensive.

For the 2025–26 tax year, employers must report expenses and benefits to HMRC, and give employees the relevant details, by 6 July 2026. The same deadline applies for submitting form P11D(b), which is used to declare the total Class 1A National Insurance due, unless all benefits have been dealt with through payroll.

After that comes the payment deadline. Class 1A National Insurance must be paid by 22 July 2026, or

by 19 July if payment is made by cheque. Employers with a PAYE Settlement Agreement have until 22 October 2026 to pay any tax and Class 1B National Insurance due, or 19 October if paying by cheque.

Some employers now choose to payroll benefits, which means the tax and Class 1 National Insurance are collected through the payroll during the year.

That can simplify matters, but it does not remove the need for care and accurate records.

Keeping clear supporting paperwork is just as important as meeting the deadlines. Employers should be able to back up the figures reported, including how benefits were valued. In some cases, exemptions can reduce what needs to be reported, but they should be checked carefully.

The key message is simple: start early. Late P11D(b) forms can trigger penalties of £100 per 50 employees for each month or part month they are overdue, with interest and further penalties possible on late payments.

Year-round appeal One of gardeners’ most common desires is to have ‘colour’ throughout the year. For many people that means bright flowers. This will also please bees and garden insects.

If you have the luxury of space to fill, annuals might be just the thing. They will provide a splash of exotic appeal that should satisfy the desire for dazzle. There is a downside, however. They are gone when the season passes, leaving a space.

Then you will probably do it all again next year.

Choosing plants with multiple-season appeal provides a more sustainable approach and your garden will generally require less maintenance.

There are many beauties to choose from. Here are just a few: Amelanchier: snowy mespilus tree It offers so much throughout the seasons. Spring flowers are like white stars, almost rivalling Magnolia stellata. But unlike the star Magnolia, Amelanchier keeps on giving. There are small, edible black fruits which are loved by birds, then the most vibrant autumn colour you could wish for.

Cercis: a small, spreading redbud tree Springtime brings charming pinky-violet flowers which appear on bare stems, outlining the graceful, spreading shape. This is not blousy blossom, but a more subtle explosion of pea-shaped blooms that are filled with nectar for bees and even butterflies.

Heart-shaped leaves are a delight all summer long.

They turn golden or red in autumn.

Hardy Geranium ‘Rozanne’, cranesbill This hardy Geranium just continues to deliver, from the first blooms in very early May right through to November or even December. It produces electrifying, violet-blue flowers, forms a pleasingly neat mound to around 45cm high and will scramble outwards. It’s easy to maintain and is ready to sprout again every spring.

Erigeron karvinskianus, Mexican fleabane From spring through to late autumn this plant produces daisy-like pink and white flowers in abundance. Allow it to cascade over walls and rocks, and soften nooks and crannies.

Veronica ‘Georgia Blue’, speedwell This wonderful flowering cushion is ideal for the front of a sunny border or for scrambling over a wall. Intense blue flowers appear in early spring and continue intermittently until autumn.

Rosmarinus prostratus, trailing rosemary A miraculous evergreen herb that will continue to bloom throughout most of the year, trailing rosemary is also a magnet for bees. It can, of course, also be used in the kitchen.

Miscanthus sinensis, ornamental silvergrass This grass not only has spectacular form but also creates movement. It injects appeal later in summer, and also during autumn and winter, when the garden is largely dormant. The foliage is silvery, with swaying plumes of flowerheads.
