Ahh, it’s finally the summer, so let’s talk about something we all need but rarely take: a proper break.
Not just logging off for a day. We’re talking about actually unplugging, sitting in the sun, laughing with people you love, eating food that took too long to cook and letting time stretch a little. You earned it and your mind needs it more than you think.
This issue is your permission slip. A reminder that slowing down isn’t weakness it’s good for you. The best ideas, the best conversations, the best memories? They don’t happen when you’re rushing around, they happen when you stop.
So, here’s your challenge: take the break without guilt. Flip through these pages, soak up the stories, and let yourself just be.

Kaftans & Day Dresses
Summer holiday season starts here! Home or abroad, we always hope for some hot weather so we can get the sun on our skin. Ladies, you want to look stylish but feel cool at the same time, so a gorgeous kaftan or maxi dress works perfectly on the beach and at home. Here are some of the best…
At Soul Sanctuary, we always know summer has arrived when the salon is full of clients asking for that sunkissed, effortless glow and this year It’s all about soft, natural colour that looks like you’ve just stepped off a beach in Ibiza, even if you haven’t left Shropshire.
Foilyage: The Star of the Summer
The colour technique stealing the spotlight right now is foilyage and yes, it’s as fabulous as it sounds. Think of it as balayage with a little extra pop.
Just like balayage, it involves hand-painting the colour onto your hair for that soft, blended finish. But with foilyage, we wrap a few of those painted sections in foil to create a brighter, more lifted result. It’s perfect if you want a bit more contrast or have darker hair and want to see those lighter pieces really shine, without losing that natural, sundrenched feel.
As soon as the sunshine hits the towns of Shropshire, something shifts. We’re officially ready for summer, the sunglasses come out, the smell of freshly cut grass is in the air, and it’s time for picky bits tea in the garden. And like clockwork, there’s one more thing that pops straight to the top of everyone’s wish list: lighter, brighter hair.
But what actually Is Balayage?
By now you’ve probably heard of it, but not everyone knows what it is. Balayage is a freehand colour technique that mimics how the sun would naturally lighten your hair.
The colour is swept through the mid-lengths and ends to create a soft, natural blend. There are no harsh lines or stripes, just gorgeous, glowing hair that looks like it belongs on a beach.
The best bit is It’s super low maintenance. Balayage grows out beautifully, so you don’t need to be in the salon toping up your roots every four weeks. It’s the ultimate “just back from holiday” hair.
This Summer’s Colour Vibe Is Defiantly Easy + Effortless
Gone are the days of chunky highlights or all-over colour. Right now, it’s all about lived-in colour, the kind that looks like it’s always been there, and just quietly levels up your look.
Here’s what we’re seeing (and loving) this summer: Face-framing highlights – a few lighter pieces around the front to brighten your face, giving an instant glow-up.
Lightening under the parting –hidden colour that peeks through and catches the light, without a big regrowth line.
Soft blends and hidden pops –colour that moves with your hair and grows out so naturally, no one knows when you last had it done.
Top Tip: Want a little change without the full commitment?
Ask for any of these sunlight placements, a few well-placed highlights around your face and underneath your parting for that soft, beachy vibe with zero fuss.
Ready to Glow?
Whether you fancy warm honey tones, soft caramel ribbons, or a few golden pieces to freshen things up, this is your sign to go for it. Stylists are pros at creating colour that suits you, your skin tone, your style, and your maintenance needs.
These techniques also keep things gentle on your hair, too with maintenance being a toner top up every 6-8 weeks, helping to condition your hair and keep it feeling soft and looking shiny.
So, if you’ve been thinking about switching up your hair this summer, now’s the time.

Author Jenny Blackhurst
A new twisty domestic psychological thriller
Some of my book ideas start with a snippet of overheard conversation, some with a news story, others are sparked by a ‘what if?’
The idea for my latest book, The Final Wife, grew from a saying I heard – there are three sides to a story, yours, mine and the truth. I just labelled it Three Sides in my ideas folder and let it sit there for a while. Every now and then I’d mull it over – who would the two people be, and what would the sides of their story look like? And more importantly, what was the elusive ‘truth’ that was somewhere in the middle? I decided pretty early on that they would be a husband and wife, and that the final result of the lies would be fatal – I do write thrillers after all.
The idea stayed that way for a while, just a seed of two people – I’d called them Anna and Luke – who had two different versions
of how they got to a point. For me, I know if a story has legs if I park an idea for a while, but my mind keeps wandering back to it and I just couldn’t get Anna and Luke out of my head. What kind of people were they? The next building block was inspired by a song while I was driving – Cell Block Tango from Chicago – and one line in particular, “I didn’t do it, but if I did it how could you tell me that I was wrong?” Perhaps Luke had it coming. Perhaps there was more than one woman who had it in for him…
I’ve written in places all over Shrewsbury, starting with Tesco’s café when my babies were small and I lived in town, and now they are older and in school, Attingham Park and Shrewsbury Library
A quick look back at my story ideas book and I found an idea that I’d scrawled in there a while back. A woman stands over the body of her husband, and when the police come she confesses to his murder. Police officer thinks she’s lying. I’ve got lots of these little snippets of ideas in my notebooks that often will go nowhere, but occasionally will merge with other ideas, or take on a new life. In this case I thought the idea fit perfectly with my Three Sides story. I imagined Anna standing over Luke’s dead body and confessing to murder, but did she do it? And if not – why would she confess?
If I’ve got that far into an idea then I know it’s taken hold. I start picking up inspiration from everywhere about who these people are, what mistakes led them to where they arrive at the end of the book, or in this case the beginning.
Where I write can often be as important as what I am writing. Being an author can be a solitary life, so I try to get out and write in as many different places as
possible, otherwise my well of inspiration can dry up pretty quickly. I live rurally so I’m grateful to have places like Carding Mill Valley on my doorstep, and Dobbies not too far if I want a nice, cooked breakfast while I write. I’ve written in places all over Shrewsbury, starting with Tesco’s café when my babies were small and I lived in town (the walk to Tesco would put the baby to sleep, then I’d have time to write when I got there) and now they are older and in school, Attingham Park and Shrewsbury Library – the latter isn’t as good for picking up snippets of conversation but it does help my focus!
I always try to challenge myself during a book. If an idea comes a bit too easily then I ask if it’s perhaps a bit predictable or cliché, so that my mind needs to dig a bit deeper for twists and turns that might not occur to readers, without them being too far-fetched! It’s a delicate balancing act and requires a lot of writing and re-writing but I can’t complain because I’m pretty convinced that I have the best job in the world.
The Final Wife by Jenny Blackhurst, is available from all good book shops and as an eBook.

Finding Peace and Clarity Through Movement in Nature
by Jenna Ward, Personal Growth Coach and Reiki Practitioner.
Throughout this little ditty, I’ll mostly refer to ‘walking’, as that is how I generally get out, though it’s not about walking specifically, rather about moving our bodies in nature, whether on foot or bike, in a wheelchair or boat, moving your legs, torso, arms and/or eyes.
Summer, with its longer mornings and evenings, offers boundless opportunities to go outside and flow with nature and this is an invitation to you to do just that, to carve out precious time in your days to check out of the buzz, the busy, the tech, the to-do’s and to check back in with you, with nature and with your being; your center.
Walking has many physical benefits, improved sleep, fitness and heart health among them, but you already know that. Have you considered the added benefits, though, of doing it in nature specifically? For me, walking in nature soothes my mind, my heart and soul, as well as my body, my whole being. It lifts my mood, sparks joy in me and helps me work through the clutter in my mind and find clarity, space and peace.
Movement in nature opens our minds up to inspiration and new ideas, sparking creativity and problem solving. Research has shown that walking improves our ability to shift between different thought modes and improves our attention, memory and recovery from mental fatigue (distracted, struggling to concentrate), all of which are important for thinking creatively. Walking in nature helps to soothe our brains, gently engaging it (as it scans the landscape, listens for sounds, registers a breeze, raindrops, warmth, scents) whilst allowing it space, in the background, to reflect and ponder on life’s quandaries and conundrums. It allows space for the clearing, clarity and sorting of our thoughts.
Next time you’re struggling to find a solution or to see the proverbial ‘wood for the trees’, consider going for a walk and let nature hold your attention, as you
move through the changing environment, whilst allowing space for your mind to reflect and play with new ideas.
“All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking,” said Philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche.
Crucially, in this modern world - with all its stresses, pressures and fast pace - movement in nature also calms our nervous system. Have you ever found yourself feeling increasingly frustrated, tense and stressed the longer you spend looking at a screen? I know for myself that when I’ve looked at my phone for more than 20 minutes, I start to feel irritable and frustrated, like I’m trapped and want to throw my phone and run! That’s the sympathetic (fight, flight, flee stress response) being activated as a result of narrow focused vision (concentrating on a screen). Being in nature, looking at open, expansive space, quietens the brain’s stress response, easing our bodies and minds.
I find walking in nature incredibly emotionally healing also. Enabling me space to think things through, reflect, maybe have a cry (there are fewer things I find more comforting than sitting against a tree in a woodland letting tears flow and release me from the heaviness). As Raynor Winn, author of ‘The Salt Path’, said, “in crisis or despair, walking has a way of untangling the mess, until you have neat strands to reshape however you choose.”
I am compelled to walk in nature. When I haven’t been for a few days I notice a change; I feel cranky, bouts of anxiety can creep up, I feel lethargic, stagnant, frustrated, foggy. Walking in nature clears my mind, gives me energy, allows me space (physical, mental and emotional), it gives me perspective, lifts my mood, fuels positive thoughts and feelings, helps me to work things through, find answers and solutions and see the bigger picture. Walking frees me. If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, heavy, I invite you to go outside, move in nature, find your freedom.
Award winning alternative aesthetic skin practitioner in Shrewsbury

youthful glow and plumpness despite her years (over 60 apparently although you would never guess). After a few weeks of ‘preparation’ I decided to go ahead with her facial threads treatment and was overjoyed with the results. It was an hour appointment and although I can describe it as ‘uncomfortable’, I took no time off work and recovered with minimal bruising … I was astounded by the results.
The country is overrun with so called ‘aesthetic practitioners’ but Denise is the real deal. Her 35 years’ experience shows immediately. She knows her stuff and is concerned (as I am) at the many aspiring businesswomen who can walk into an ‘aesthetic’ centre and come out only days later apparently ‘trained’ to inject into your face!
Improve Your Skin Aesthetics was founded by the experienced, extremely warm and personable awardwinning skin practitioner Denise Evans. Based in Shrewsbury, Denise has over 35 years’ experience as a skin specialist and was trained in Harley Street, London.
I was introduced to her by a friend, as at 59 years old I felt like the time was right to start thinking about a possible face lift and my friend said, “go and see Denise first”.
I’m so glad I did … Denise has a prescriptive approach to each person who visits her.
For one person she might feel Laser therapy is the secret to their facial restoration (she has one of the most expensive ‘medical grade’ laser light therapy machines in the country) for another it might be Green Peel treatments (research the treatments by Dr Med. Christine Schrammer, whose results so inspired Denise) alongside pioneering light therapy.
Other clients may be prescribed a touch of botox and minimal fillers, another given advice on rehydrating and various bespoke products. For me it was an interesting prescription which gave quick and very successful results. I’ve never thought about light therapy, but after three Green Peel treatments followed by a 25-minute light therapy, it seemed to regenerate any collagen that was left in my ageing face and bring it back to life. I’d had a dabble here and there with fillers and botox, but Denise gently and tactfully suggested we perhaps undo some of that work and look at peel treatments alongside light therapy to thoroughly prep my skin ensuring a good enough condition for her ‘thread lift treatment’ heralded as the ‘non-surgical facelift’… Not normally a particularly trusting person, I felt different around Denise - I trusted her implicitly. Her skin has a
“I have seen far too many over-frozen and over-filled faces lately, and had to do too much correction work … Your face is so precious whatever age it is, please do your research before you place it in the hands of an aspiring aesthetic-newcomer who’s just paid to be trained exchanging money for overnight qualifications, I have been achieving beautiful facial results for many decades and I can assess exactly what the best treatment is so you can look like the best version of you”, says Denise ...and do you know what... I believe her.
Denise’s consultation is so thorough you feel like she knows every inch of you by the end of it … she talks through every single treatment she offers and how she relies less and less on the present ‘go to’ botulinum and restylane and more on her own prescriptive treatments developed over decades of being ‘up close and personal’ to thousands of faces. The beauty of a visit to Denise is that you know she will reach into the plethora of treatments available to her and pick the ones that suit you … bespoke in other words …. for me it was undoing some past treatments and getting my face back to how it looked a good few years ago.
Treatments start from as little as £40 and I would advise that every penny spent with her is worth it. If you’re seriously considering radical anti-aging skin procedures you could save yourself the misery and trauma not to mention the £15,000 price tag that comes with a UK facelift with a few visits to Denise in Shrewsbury and achieve great results … trust me I did it.

She says, “I can’t wait to begin another year! It’s so inspiring to see the students’ fascination with learning about the body and holistic health and how that transforms into professional practise over the course of a year. Helping them to offer deep presence and relaxation first to themselves and then another is what I love about teaching this course. It’s a transformative journey.”
The Level 4 Diploma is the equivalent of the first year of a degree programme. Students receive tuition in both the practical and theoretical aspects of massage, including Level 4 in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology.
Feedback from Holistic Massage Diploma graduates:
“Jenny created an environment where learning was well paced with plenty of opportunities to ask questions, recap and practise. As students we were not only guided through the theory and massage techniques, but also the importance of looking after oneself on a physical and emotional level.”

Speckled
Polka dots are trending! Whilst always a timeless classic, polka dots surge in their popularity and availability on products and right now it’s having a moment. However, I doubt anyone wants the interiors of their house resembling a set from CBeebies. Enter, Speckles. The softer alternative of spots and dots. Speckles can cover a multitude of sins and come across more organic and natural as the application of the pattern is irregular and often asymmetric. There are so many options with speckles; terrazzo tiles, stoneware dishes and flecked upholstery, all convey texture and interest without over doing pattern. Playing with shape, scale and colour combinations mean you can make this pattern subdued and unobtrusive, or playful and energetic. It’s hard to dislike the confetti nature of this pattern.

Water in a garden instantly changes the ambience of the space. It reflects light and creates its own microclimate whilst adding interest and attracting a range of plants and wildlife.
Wildlife
Ponds with different features will prove to be more attractive to wildlife than a formal pond with little vegetation and steep sides. Sloping ‘beaches’ will enable creatures to climb in and out easily, and to take a drink without fear of drowning. Ideally there will be muddy areas and shallow spaces together with deeper sections and a range of different plants for egg-laying, shelter, feeding and mobility assistance. There will be shade and sun, with crevices in which creatures can hide and some open areas for maximum benefit of light and warmth.
Fish
A pond containing fish is different from a wildlife pond. Watching fish is undoubtedly a pleasant activity and caring for them is relatively easy. Fish can be viewed as being attractive, especially when coloured gold. However, they prey on smaller wildlife, which can reduce the diversity of life.
Garden
Ponds provide a great gardening opportunity as they can be colonised with a range of plants. Some enjoy boggy conditions such as those found within the pond margins, whilst others like to have their feet completely under the water. The most successful pond will have around one-third to a half of the surface covered in leaf by the summer months. This will help to control troublesome invasive plants that have a habit of moving in.

Andalucian Gazpacho
Refreshing and cool – and bursting with flavoursome fresh produce – this authentic no-cook Andalucian gazpacho is perfect for summertime entertaining and can be made ahead of time.
Ingred I ents
• 50g stale bread, crusts removed and crumbled
• 1kg ripe, tasty tomatoes, chopped
• 1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped
• 1-2 cloves garlic, peeled
• 1 cucumber, peeled and sliced, plus a little extra, diced, to serve
• 100ml Spanish extra virgin olive oil
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 2-3 tbsp sherry vinegar
• Very cold water, for topping up
method
1. Soak the bread in some water and when well soaked, squeeze the water out.
2. Place the chopped tomatoes, green pepper, garlic, cucumber and soaked bread in a food processor or blender and blend to a creamy consistency, adding the olive oil little by little.
3. Season with sea salt and add sherry vinegar to taste. Add cold water until the desired consistency is reached and blend again.
4. Transfer to a bowl and place in the fridge until ready to serve, garnished with diced cucumber and finished with a generous grinding of black pepper.
Layers of orange jelly, coconut cream and fresh fruit give us this tropical-themed trifle. This includes a simple all-in-one cake recipe, but sponge fingers will work too!
Serves 8 | Preparation time 25 minutes
Baking and chilling 1 hour 20 minutes
Ingred I ents
For the sponge cake (or use a 300g Madeira cake or 300g of sponge fingers)
• 120g butter, at room temperature
• 120g granulated sugar
• 2 medium eggs
• 120g plain flour
• 1 tsp baking powder
• Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon
For the other layers
• 1 x 85g packet orange jelly crystals
• 3 ripe mangoes, peeled, destoned and sliced (or 1 ripe mango and about 200g mango pulp)
• 500ml fresh custard
• 400ml double cream
• 1 tbsp coconut extract
To decorate
• Coconut flakes (optional)
• Lime zest (optional)
Recipe extracted from Part-Time Baker: Simple bakes without the stress by Florence Stanton, out now, published by Carnival, priced £18.99, with photography by Maja Smend.
method
1. First make the cake (if you’re making your own). Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6 and line a 20cm square brownie tin with baking parchment.
2. In a large bowl, or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the beater attachment, add all the cake ingredients and combine until smooth. If very stiff, add a little milk. Pour into the lined tin, level it out and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, until golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack.
3. While the cake is cooling, make the jelly according to the packet instructions and leave to set in a wide, shallow baking dish.
4. Once the cake has cooled, slice it up and use it to cover the base of your trifle bowl (use any deep, glass bowl). If using sponge fingers, break them in half and use them to cover the base of the bowl. Top with slices from 1 mango and spread the jelly over the top (it doesn’t need to be neat as it’ll be covered).
5. Let it set in the fridge for at least 1 hour. If you can’t find mango pulp, make it by using 2 mangoes: chop and then use an electric or hand blender to create a thick pulp. Spread this over the jelly. Top with the custard.
6. Finally, whisk the cream with the coconut extract until whipped and fluffy. Spread this over the top of the trifle and top with coconut flakes and lime zest, if liked. Serve.

EDITOR’S CHOICE
Cobweb by Michael Morpurgo
Michael Morpurgo does it again. Cobweb is one of those rare books that wraps its paws around your heart and doesn’t let go. Set in 1815 against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, this isn’t just a war story—it’s a story of loyalty, survival, and unexpected connections, told through the eyes of a dog with more heart and wisdom than most people.
Cobweb, a curious and spirited puppy, is torn from his peaceful life and thrown into a world of danger and duty as a drover’s dog. What unfolds is a deeply emotional journey that ties humanity, history, and the unspoken bond between animals and people.
Inspired by the true story of the French Drummer Boy of Waterloo, this tale is classic Morpurgo—powerful, gentle, and unforgettable. Perfect for anyone who believes stories can change the way we see the past—and each other.

Frank The Pizza by Eoin McLaughlin and Mike Byrne (RRP £7.99)
Review by Erin - Book Worms
Frank the Pizza is about someone trying to fit in but not being able to because they are different. I thought this was a heartwarming book. I loved this book because it’s funny and all about friendship. The book is set at a kid’s party. The main characters are Frank the Pizza and Francis the Cupcake. When they go to a party, they experiment with different toppings like BBQ chips and marshmallows.
I would recommend this book to aged 7 and under. I give it five stars!

Murdle Sleuths on the Loose is a good book with deduction grids. In the first chapter Jake must find a hamster but her teacher is missing...

Changing the World, One Story at a Time
by Jessica Mills, author
Wendy Wanderlust began as stories I told to children while working as a nanny overseas. It was a way for me to be creative and I loved the process, but as I travelled and witnessed the effects of climate change and pollution first hand my direction of the stories I created began to change. Wendy became a voice for sustainability. I realised I could do more than tell stories. I could inspire action.
Today I lead Wendy Wanderlust workshops across the UK, an education initiative that brings creative sustainability focused fun to schools. These sessions help children understand complex environmental issues in practical and engaging ways. The workshops are designed to build ecoawareness, develop critical thinking, encourage collaboration and inspire meaningful choices for the future of our planet.
The first two books in the Wendy Wanderlust series have already inspired these workshops, and I’m currently writing the third. This next story focuses on deforestation in Costa Rica. As always, a new workshop will follow allowing students to explore the theme beyond the pages. I plan to continue writing stories that address urgent global issues and then transform those stories into hands-on learning experiences.
This summer I’ll be attending Earth Fest in London. It’s a vibrant sustainability festival where I’ll be showcasing the workshops and connecting with others who care deeply about climate education and creative learning. I’m excited to be part of a community of people working towards the same goal.
What started as a creative hobby has become something much more powerful. I’ve seen children leave my workshops with greater knowledge, a sense of hope and a belief that they can help change the world. Their ideas matter. Their voices matter. Together we are writing a new chapter in the story of how we care for our planet.
Health Harry thinks the impossible –could he give up his phone?
It hadn’t really crossed his mind – how much time did he spend on his phone? His Mum asked him and he didn’t have an answer. “Too much I guess,” was all he could muster in response. But it did set him thinking: he knew that most adults thought kids his age were glued to screens too much but they were from a different generation, and anyway they were almost just as bad, weren’t they? And, did it matter? He decided to find out.
He found out that his age group were spending 7-9 hours per day looking at screens. That did include school, the TV, gaming and phone use. He found an app that logged how much time he was doing on his phone - he was astonished - where did the 4 hours come from? And that didn’t include other screens so he was about average after all! Then he found the recommended amount of phone screen for his age – 1.5 hours! Surely this was all adult based teenage persecution?
His research was not very reassuring. Too much screen use changed the way your brain worked. You had more dopamine apparently and that reinforced an addictive habit of more screen use. Then the brain could actually change shape – that was a bit scary. What was even more scary was that these things could start in babies! Then there were proper scientific studies showing all sorts of negative stuff associated with high screen time usage. It could disturb your sleep, make you more anxious or depressed, was associated with getting fat and having poor language and social skills. Playing violent video games was associated with more antisocial behaviour and high screen times were associated with attention deficit disorder type symptoms. Harry started to look at his phone differently – was it some sort of electronic devil? On the other hand, he
did find that specific programmes designed mostly as educational ones were a real positive and that, on the whole, most people felt it increased their level of social interaction and improved communication. He saw that his parents had to use them for an increasing number of practical day-to-day things too. He did see people being rather unpleasant via social media and knew a few friends had been reduced to tears by comments they had received. “Not all communication is good,” he thought.
He found an app that logged how much time he was doing on his phone - he was astonished - where did the four hours come from?
His school was considering “Yondr” apparently. Not a clever name really - just short for yonder apparently meaning putting some distance between school kids and their phones. Now that would seriously freak out some of his friends. “Have we all become phone addicted?” he thought. Yondr involved your phone being put in a time-locked bag so you could not access it during certain school hours. Schools that used it found pupils socialised more, did better academically and reported less anxiety and depression. It did however cost money so he couldn’t see his school using the bags but might they just ban phones he wondered.
“Mum,” Harry started. “I think it might be good if we tried looking at screens a bit less as a family.” His sister looked genuinely petrified at the idea. “Why ‘we’ she butted in. “Well, we’d all be a bit more healthy, happy and harmonious,” (he was quite pleased with his alliteration and even more smug that he knew what it meant!). “Considering I use a screen at work too I think you might be right,” replied Mum. “What about us all downloading that app that monitors your use and then having a family comparison in a month?” The expression on his sister’s face was now something to behold. “It will be good for her too,” he mused.
Year 6 is the New Year 7:
A New Chapter at Ellesmere College
In years gone by, the phrase “big school” was synonymous with Year 7 — the moment pupils left behind the primary classroom and stepped into a world of secondary education with science labs, lockers, subject specialist and a more demanding academic curriculum. But at Ellesmere College, the landscape is changing. Increasingly, Year 6 has become the new gateway into that world — a carefully designed bridge that introduces the breadth and depth of senior school life, without forcing children to grow up too fast.
At Ellesmere, the Year 6 experience is being redefined. It’s more than just the final year of Junior School; it’s an opportunity for pupils to begin exploring the wider academic landscape — from science experiments conducted in real laboratories to the introduction of Classics and Latin, taught by subject specialists. These experiences don’t just build knowledge; they ignite curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, key ingredients for longterm academic success.
The structure of the curriculum reflects this shift. Year 6 pupils at Ellesmere are given a taste of what’s to come, while still benefitting from the nurturing, tailored environment of the Lower School. They are encouraged to take on greater independence, with timetabled lessons across a range of subjects and increased interaction with senior staff, but they do so in a context where support and personal development remain front and centre.
What’s unique at Ellesmere is that many of these subject specialist teachers work with pupils all the way from Year 6 through to Year 13. This continuity means relationships are built over time, allowing staff to develop a deep understanding of each child’s strengths, interests and learning style. It creates a clear pathway for unlocking potential — not through pressure, but through knowing and nurturing the individual.
One of the most valuable aspects of this approach is the balance it strikes. Pupils are stretched academically and introduced to new
concepts and disciplines, but not at the expense of their childhood. There is no rush to “grow up”; instead, there is space to grow into oneself — to develop confidence, resilience and curiosity within a safe and supportive community. Social and emotional development are not side-lined; they are nurtured with the same care as academic progress.
The benefits of this early immersion become most apparent as pupils approach the transition to Senior School, which at Ellesmere begins in Year 9. By the time they reach that point, students are not stepping into the unknown. They are moving forward along a path they have already begun to navigate. The systems, subjects and staff are familiar. The learning culture feels like home. That familiarity fosters confidence and that confidence breeds momentum.
In fact, what we increasingly see is that pupils who start their Ellesmere journey in Year 6 (or earlier) not only adjust more seamlessly into Senior School life — they thrive. The foundations laid in those earlier years allow them to accelerate academically in Year 9 and beyond, not through pressure, but through a genuine love of learning and sense of purpose. They understand the rhythm of school life, they feel a part of the wider school community and they have already begun to explore where their interests and strengths might take them.
There is also something to be said for continuity. In a world where educational transitions can be a source of stress and disruption, Ellesmere offers a sense of continuity that is both rare and powerful. Year 6 is not a standalone moment; it is part of a coherent, long-term journey that prioritises both academic excellence and personal wellbeing.
In short, Year 6 at Ellesmere College is no longer a waiting room before “big school” begins. It is big school — but thoughtfully and age-appropriately designed. It offers the very best of both worlds: the breadth and excitement of senior school learning and the care and support that young learners need to flourish.

The impact of ageing on eyesight
Have you noticed that you find text blurry when trying to read a book or a message on your phone? Or perhaps you have started to struggle to read a restaurant menu? It could be a natural change known as presbyopia, which is very common as you reach your 40s and 50s.
Presbyopia is a natural part of the ageing process, caused by a loss of flexibility in the lens that impacts your ability to focus on things close to you. On top of this, as you age, you’ll also experience lens discolouration and reduced strength in the muscle that controls pupil size and its reaction to light. This may mean it takes you longer to distinguish shades of colour or to adjust as you move between dimly and brightly lit rooms. There are also several less common age-related eye conditions that can lead to vision loss if left untreated. These include cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), to name a few. Many eye diseases can be treated successfully if detected early, which is why regular eye examinations are so important.
Unfortunately, we can’t stop our eyesight from deteriorating as we age. However, there are several options to help you maintain clearer vision for longer.
Glasses
Reading glasses are available online or over the counter without a prescription. However, many people prefer bifocals or varifocals, for which they’ll need to visit an optician.
While bifocals are divided into two sections for near and distance vision, varifocals allow you to see three ‘portions’ of vision within a single lens – close, mid and distance – making them the more popular option. They can take some time to get used to, but most people fully adjust after a few weeks.
Contact lenses
Contact lenses are a convenient alternative to glasses, giving you a wider field of vision and freedom from frames. Multifocal contact lenses can correct presbyopia, as they let you see clearly at various distances without needing reading glasses. However, wearing contact lenses requires more care and maintenance than glasses, especially as tear production tends to decrease with age.
If you already wear contact lenses for myopia (short-sightedness), your optician may suggest just reducing the strength in one lens. You then effectively have one eye for distance and one for close-up reading. It sounds odd, but your eyes do adjust.
Refractive surgery
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) and laserassisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) are eye surgeries that promise a glasses-free life and short recovery time. LASIK is a laser-based procedure, and RLE involves implanting a lens to replace the eye’s natural lens. RLE involves going inside the eye, whereas LASIK does not, meaning the former has a longer recovery time.
Refractive surgery can be highly effective, but it’s not suitable for everyone, and it is expensive. Obviously, it’s essential to consider the potential risks and side effects before progressing with treatment.
A guide to Lake Garda
Stretching over 50 kilometres, Lake Garda is the largest of the Italian lakes. Its beautiful, glittering shoreline has attracted poets, artists, and writers for centuries—from DH Lawrence to Goethe. Nowadays, its succession of Roman remains, colourful towns, pebble beaches, and spectacular mountain views draw in visitors worldwide.
Where to stay
Lake Garda is a landscape of contrasts. Fringed by the Dolomites, the northern, almost fjord-like tip of the lake is arguably the most scenic. The mountains create a cooler climate and sweep up winds, creating the perfect conditions for water sports, including windsurfing and kitesurfing. Hillside Malcesine, cobbled Limone, northernmost Riva, and sporty Torbole are the main resorts in the north.
The lake’s southern shoreline is peppered with bustling towns, sandy coves, and gently rolling hills. The climate is generally warmer and more stable, making way for flourishing olive trees and lemon groves. Many tourists base themselves in the popular spa resort of Sirmione or the nearby towns of Desenzano, Peschiera, Lazise and Garda.
What to see and do
The best way to spend your days away is to hop between the gorgeous towns that fringe Lake Garda’s shoreline – whether by car, boat, bike or bus. If you’re staying in the south, Sirmione is a mustvisit. Formed around a picturesque peninsula, the town is known for its thermal baths, which were first popularised by the Romans. With an entrance via
the centuries-old Scaligero Castle, complete with a moat and drawbridge, it won’t take you long to fall in love. Lazise is another of the south’s prettiest towns, fringed by one of the only sandy beaches in the area. For some family-friendly fun, why not head to nearby Gardaland?
In the north, Monte Baldo beckons. For the best views, catch the cable car from Malcesine and follow the hiking and biking trails back to the shoreline. This end of the lake is also the perfect place to get involved in some water sports. If you stay near Riva, you’re not far from the extraordinary Cascata del Varone waterfall, which falls 98m through a hollow cave.
How to get around?
Passenger ferries are a popular way to get around, with many journeys taking under an hour. Public buses are also cheap and regular, but hiring a car is another option if you want to cover a lot of ground over a short period. Cycle lanes also run parallel to the lake, and there are plenty of options for bike rental (including electric bikes) all over.
When should you visit?
Weather-wise, the best time to visit is between June and September, when temperatures stay around the mid to late 20s. However, visiting during the shoulder seasons of April-May and early October can be a sensible way to avoid the crowds. Temperatures will be slightly cooler, and you might see a little rain, but you’ll have plenty of room to roam!
