‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’

That most dreaded of childhood questions.

My answer would vary from fashion designer to dancer, dependent on what day I was Sarah Thom Asda Editor asked. But underneath it all, I always believed I was something more. Maybe the little girl who encountered The Big Friendly Giant, the fox that thwarted ALL three farmers or, if I was lucky, the child who won the golden ticket…

I have fond memories of books when I was younger and adored Roald Dahl. Rereading my favourite chapters while poring over Quentin Blake’s illustrations took me to faraway lands. With World Book Day on the horizon, we have the chance to encourage little ones to become their favourite characters; read about them, dress like them and cook their beloved recipes (p57).

If showing off your own culinary prowess is more tempting, why not try perfecting steak (p13), mastering bao buns (p42) or conquering desserts (p20). Go on, show us your skills!

‘An amazingly versatile vegetable, cauliflower works brilliantly in all kinds of dishes, from soups and curries to pasta sauces. My favourite is creamy cauliflower cheese – to make it even heartier, mix in chopped boiled eggs and cooked bacon.

Of course, cauliflower has also been reinvented as the ultimate “substitute” ingredient. Try blitzing florets to crumbs and bake for a gluten-free pizza base, or chop and steam for lower carb “rice”. You can also deep-fry until golden, then drizzle in a spicy sauce for vegan buffalo wings (right) that everyone will love!’

Fill a cocktail shaker or large jar with ice and pour

over 50ml Extra Special Pink Gin and 50ml pink grapefruit juice. Shake for 30 secs then strain into 2 coupe glasses or flutes. Divide 2tbsp pomegranate seeds between the 2 glasses and top up each cocktail with 100ml prosecco.

Take 2 cocktail sticks and skewer 1 strawberry on each. Rest across the rim of each glass and serve immediately.

Bring the steak to room temperature and pat dry with a sheet of kitchen roll.

Heat a frying pan – with no oil added – over a high setting until it starts to smoke.

Rub both sides of the steak with oil and carefully put it into the hot pan.

1 Cook the crispy potatoes according to the pack instructions.

E

ating together is an important part of family life for me. I have very fond memories of my childhood growing up in Hampshire. Both my mum and dad would cook for me, my brother and sister.

Family mealtimes were always special to us, whether it was a weeknight spaghetti Bolognese or a Sunday roast.

I want my daughters Belle, five, and Penelope, one, to grow up with the same fond memories and see good food as a pleasure.

My husband Richard and I both believe in the importance of us all sitting at the table for dinner; we never eat in front of the TV. We’re always cooking together, too, and Belle squeals with delight whenever she cracks eggs for a dish. It’s hilarious!

My mum’s recipe for lasagne is fantastic and I’ve adapted it for my cookbook, using thin slices of butternut squash instead of the pasta sheets – although it certainly isn’t a ‘consolation’ dish. I don’t think healthier eating should be about depriving yourself or restricting food groups. This version tastes delicious and is good for entertaining, as you can make and freeze it in advance.

It’s also great for sneaking in vegetables for fussy youngsters!

Remove the bay leaves.

3 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

4 Spoon a layer of the mince into a baking dish and top with a layer of butternut squash, followed by a little white sauce.

Continue adding layers, finishing with sauce, then sprinkle with the cheese and Parmesan.

Cover with foil, bake for 45-60 mins, then serve.

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4.

2 Whisk together 1tbsp clear honey, 1tbsp reduced-salt soy sauce, 1tbsp rice vinegar, 1tsp Chinese five spice powder, 2 cloves garlic, crushed, a 2cm piece ginger, grated, and ½tbsp sesame seeds.

3 Coat 750g pork belly slices and 400g plums, destoned and chopped, in the marinade and place on a baking tray with about 75ml water. Cover with foil and roast for 1 hr.

Uncover, baste and cook

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

2 Whisk together 2tbsp balsamic glaze, 1tbsp rapeseed oil and 2 cloves garlic, crushed.

3 Make 3 diagonal cuts in the skin and flesh of 8 Butcher’s Selection Chicken Drumsticks.

Toss in the marinade and leave for 15 mins.

4 Put 500g Grower’s Selection British Baby Potatoes, halved, in a pan of boiling water and cook for 10 mins until just tender. Drain

for another 50-60 mins basting after 30 mins.

4 Cook 200g jasmine rice according to the pack instructions.

5 Divide the pork and plums between 4 plates, and drizzle over the juices.

Serve with the rice and 85g watercress, sprinkled with 2 spring onions, shredded, 1 red chilli (optional), sliced, and ½tbsp sesame seeds.

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Prick the sweet potatoes with a fork, then roast on a tray for 55 mins. Allow to cool a little, then halve and scoop the flesh into a bowl, reserving the skins.

2 Mix in the cherry tomatoes, most of the spring onions and half the coriander. Season with freshly ground

black pepper, spoon back into the skins and bake for 15 mins.

3 Meanwhile, heat the oil in a pan on a medium setting, add the garlic and fry for 2 mins. Add the beans, sweetcorn, paprika, Cajun seasoning, chopped tomatoes and 100ml water. Stir, then simmer for 25 mins until thickened.

4 Spoon the beans over the sweet potatoes and top with the avocado.

Sprinkle with the remaining spring onions and coriander, then serve with the lime slices on the side.

Put 1tbsp caster sugar and a 7g sachet Asda Easy Bake Yeast in a small bowl. Stir in 1tbsp warm water until the sugar has dissolved, then set aside for 5 mins.

5 Roll each piece of dough into a ball. Use your hands to flatten the balls into oval shapes, about 2cm thick.

In a separate bowl, stir together 1tbsp caster sugar, 500g self-raising flour, 150ml whole milk and 1tbsp vegetable oil.

Stir in the yeast mixture, plus 100ml warm water, and mix into a dough.

Knead on a lightly floured surface for 12 mins until the dough is smooth and less sticky. Put it in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with oiled clingfilm and leave to prove in a warm place for 1 hr or until doubled in size.

Once the dough has proved, remove it from the bowl and discard the clingfilm. Roll the dough into a thick sausage shape, then cut it into 12 even pieces.

Use 2tbsp vegetable oil to brush both sides of all the buns, then fold over.

Put each bun into a paper muffin case on a baking tray. Cover with oiled clingfilm and set aside to prove for 30 mins.

Put 2-3cm of water in a pan or wok and bring to the boil. Put the buns, 3 or 4 at a time, in a bamboo or metal steamer and set it over the pan.

Cover the steamer and cook for 8-10 mins until the buns are puffed. Remove and set aside to cool slightly. Repeat with the remaining buns. To serve, carefully open and add your chosen filling.

If you don’t have a steamer basket, heat 2-3cm water in a large, deep pan. Carefully set 2 heatproof mugs in the bottom of the pan and put a heatproof plate on top. Make sure there’s enough room above the plate so the buns won’t touch the lid of the pan. Cover and cook as you would using a steamer basket.

‘I learned all about baking from youtube’

riony May stole the nation’s hearts with her fantastic baking skills last year on Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off. Now, the 34-year-old mum, who lives in Bristol with her husband Steve and daughter Nora, three, has teamed up with us to create some unique animal-inspired recipes to bake at home with your little ones. In between making doggy biscuits and elephant pizzas, she filled us in on her time in the tent...

How did it feel to cook in the Bake Off tent?

It was so hot with last summer’s heatwave!

But it’s such an amazing atmosphere – it’s just buzzing all the time.

From the minute you step in at seven in the morning, there’s so much going on and so many people who are part of the team. It’s busier than I thought it was going to be, but it’s great. It’s just like you would want it to be.

Do you have a favourite contestant from a previous series?

I always loved Selasi, he was great, and lovely Liam, too. And Nadiya, obviously. I remember when she won, I was so emotional watching it. When I knew I was going to be on, I went back to the first series and watched it all again.

How did you juggle your life with filming Bake Off every weekend?

I’m so blessed – I have such a supportive family. My mum helps out a lot and my husband’s

incredible. We put Nora in for an extra day at nursery each week, and my mum would look after her so I could practise. I don’t know how people who work full time manage to do it!

Being a Bake Off contestant is hard work – what kept you going?

I remember my husband saying to

me, ‘You know, you’re never going to get to do this again – you have to go and do it properly.’ I’m glad he said that because it meant that I tried really hard every week.

How did you get into baking?

I baked a bit as a kid with my nan, but I really got into it in 2013 when I was off work for nine months. I was ill, but they didn’t know what was wrong – eventually we figured out it was polycystic ovary syndrome. I’m not very good at doing nothing, so

the nurse at the school where I worked suggested I start baking. It really relaxed me and kept me happy.

My uncle was in hospital at the time, so I’d go to London with shedloads of shortbread for him and the nurses.

And you taught yourself some of the trickier techniques by watching YouTube tutorials…

Yes, I learned everything on YouTube. For Bake Off, I watched videos of these Ukrainian women making korovai (a Ukrainian wedding bread) in their kitchens.

I didn’t understand a word they were saying, but just watched what they were doing.

Has Nora always enjoyed helping you out in the kitchen?

Yes, she’s been helping for as long as she’s been able to. We bake a couple of times a week and she loves making cakes and stamping out biscuits. She’s learning about what goes into a cake, into bread, into pastry. She loves it.

Do you have any tips for parents who want to bake with their kids?

First, pre-warn yourself that there’s going to be lots of mess and just embrace it! Also, if you’re making something that needs exact amounts, weigh everything before you get started, so the kids can just tip it in.

They don’t have to make something from start to finish either. It doesn’t matter if they’re decorating with shop-bought icing, as long as you’re involving them in one way or another.

● 350g plain flour, plus extra for dusting ● 7g easy-bake yeast ● 1tbsp vegetable oil ● 6tbsp passata ● 60g reduced-fat cheese, grated ● 2 black olives, halved ● 2 pineapple rings, halved ● ½ red pepper, deseeded and sliced

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

2 Put the flour in a mixing bowl. Add the yeast, the oil

and 215ml warm (not hot) water, then mix together with your hands to form a dough. Knead until smooth.

3 Split the dough in 2 and reserve a small piece from each half for the trunk.

4 On a floured surface, roll 1 of the dough halves into a circle about ½cm thick. Spread over half the passata, then sprinkle on half the cheese.

5 Add 2 olive halves for eyes, and 2 of the pineapple ring halves for ears.

6 For the trunk, roll 1 piece of the reserved dough into a sausage shape. Put it on the pizza and score lines across it for a wrinkly effect.

Add 2 red pepper slices below the trunk as tusks.

7 Repeat steps 4-6 with the remaining ingredients to make another pizza, dividing any leftover slices of pepper between the 2 pizzas as extra decoration.

8 Bake the pizzas on a baking tray for 10-15 mins until the cheese has melted, then serve immediately.

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

Grease a 6-hole muffin tin with the vegetable oil.

2 Put the squash in a pan, cover with water, bring to the boil, then simmer for 15 mins until soft. Drain, then mash until smooth.

Mix in the cinnamon.

3 Layer 3 sheets of the filo pastry on top of each other, then use a 14cm round cutter to cut out 3 circles. Repeat with another 3 sheets of filo, so you have 6 circles, each with 3 layers of filo.

4 Press a 3-layer circle into each hole of the muffin tin. To create manes for the lions, gently scrunch up

the pastry overlapping the edge of each hole for a wild, crinkled effect.

5 Sprinkle the pine nuts over the base of each filo pastry case. Spoon over the butternut squash mash until it’s ½cm from the top of each case.

6 Bake for 14-16 mins until the filo is golden brown and crispy. Allow to cool.

7 To make the lion faces, place 2 raisins on the filling of each crinkle for eyes.

8 For each face, slice 1 olive into 3 pieces crossways.

Use 1 end-piece to make a nose. Cut the other end-piece in 2 and use for the ears. Cut the ring-shaped middle slice in half, then place the 2 pieces side by side to create a ‘W’ shape for the mouth.

9 For the whiskers, snip the chives into 2cm pieces and arrange a few whiskers on each face, either side of the nose. Then enjoy!

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

Line a baking tray.

2 Beat together the spread, peanut butter and stevia (if using) until smooth.

3 Put the flour, bicarbonate of soda, turmeric and cinnamon into a mixing bowl and whisk to combine.

4 Stir this together with the peanut butter mixture and 6tbsp cold water

until it forms a dough.

Wrap in clingfilm and chill for 20 mins.

5 On a floured surface, roll out the dough to ½cm thick. Cut out 12 circles and 12 heart shapes. Put the circles on the baking tray.

6 Cut a heart shape in half lengthways and place 1 half on either side of a circle to make ears. Repeat with the remaining shapes.

7 Push 1 raisin into the middle of each circle for a nose and add 2 raisins for eyes. Use a skewer to score the mouth. Chill for 10 mins.

8 Bake for 10-12 mins until the edges start to brown, then cool before serving.

● 335g plain flour, plus extra for dusting ● 150g dairy-free spread, frozen ● Zest 1 orange ● 2 Gala apples, peeled, cored and chopped, peel reserved ● Juice ½ orange ● 1½tsp cinnamon ● 50g porridge oats ● 1tbsp maple syrup ● ½tsp nutmeg ● 12 blueberries ● 12 raisins

1 Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

2 Put 300g of the flour in a mixing bowl. Grate in the frozen spread, add the zest and stir with a blunt-bladed knife. Mix in 2tbsp water.

Use your hands to bring the mixture together into a ball. Wrap in clingfilm and chill for 20 mins.

3 Put the apples in a bowl.

Squeeze over the orange juice. Sprinkle over 1tbsp of the remaining flour and 1tsp of the cinnamon. Mix to

coat the apples. Set aside.

4 Put the pastry on a floured surface. Roll out to the thickness of a £1 coin. Cut out 6 x 10cm circles and put them in 6 muffin tray holes, pressing in with your fingers. Trim off the excess but leave ½cm overlapping the edge of each hole. Chill for 5 mins.

Use the leftover pastry to make 12 x 2cm bunny ears.

5 Mix together the oats, the remaining flour, the maple syrup, the remaining cinnamon and the nutmeg.

6 Divide the apples between the cases, top with the crumble and add the ears.

7 Bake for 15-20 mins until the pastry is browned and the crumble is set and crispy. Press 2 blueberries and 2 raisins onto each to make a bunny face.

Add apple-peel ‘whiskers’ and enjoy warm.

Harry Potter Sorting Hat muffins

Wizard treats with fillings inspired by the four Hogwarts House Colours – which will you choose?

MAKES 12 READY IN 50 MINS, PLUS COOLING PRICE PER SERVING 23p ● 150g self-raising flour ● 1tsp bicarbonate of soda ● 50g porridge oats ● 1tsp dried mixed herbs ● 75ml rapeseed oil ● 2 medium eggs, beaten ● 1 carrot, finely grated ● 1 courgette, finely grated ● 1-2tbsp semi-skimmed

milk ●2 00g Asda 50% Less Fat Light Soft Cheese ● Food colouring gel in red, blue, green and yellow ● You will also need 36 foil muffin cases

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4.

Fill a 12-hole muffin tray with 12 of the muffin cases.

2 Mix together the flour,

bicarbonate of soda, oats and herbs (reserving 1tbsp of the oats) until combined.

3 Whisk together the oil and eggs, then mix into the dry ingredients with the carrot and courgette, adding milk if the mixture is too dry. Divide between the muffin cases and top with the reserved oats.

4 Bake for 25-30 mins until golden, risen and a skewer comes out clean when inserted in the middle. Cool in the tin for 10 mins, then remove to a wire rack to cool fully.

5 Divide the soft cheese between 4 bowls and stir until smooth. Mix a few drops of each food colouring into each bowl

so you have 4 colours.

6 With a sharp knife, cut a shallow cone out of the top of each cake. Slice off and discard the pointed end to create a flat ‘lid’.

7 Fill each muffin with a different colour of cheese and top with a muffin ‘lid’.

8 To make the pointy hat toppers, fold 12 of the remaining muffin cases in half and cut a semicircle out along the folded edge of each one, leaving a wide circle in the middle.

9 Fold the remaining 12 cases in half and roll each one into a cone shape.

Push the cones through the cut-out centres of the other muffin cases to make wizard’s hats.

10 Top each muffin with a hat before serving.

Small steps Make simple changes like washing clothes on a cooler temperature, such as 30 degrees (which, according to the Energy Saving Trust** can use up to 40% less electricity over a year than washing at higher temperatures†).

Air-drying your laundry instead of tumble-drying it and turning the heating thermostat down by just 1 degree can make a difference to your bills.

odel and former Coronation Street and Grange Hill actress Georgia May Foote, 27, took time out to chat to us about make-up essentials, beauty icons, wellbeing – and how taking part in Strictly Come Dancing changed her life…

How has your beauty routine evolved over the years?

I’ve learned to put on less.

I remember when we all used to go out in our college days wearing six pairs of false eyelashes. I don’t even use them now! I’m definitely braver, but I also have more of a sense of what suits me. When I was 12 and working on Grange Hill, they were constantly applying foundation to us on set. I hated it.

Who is your beauty icon?

I love Kate Beckinsale. She has a really natural look and her skin is always glowing.

Worst beauty fail?

When I was in college, I let my sister put purple streaks through my hair. I’d never dyed it before – and it was the worst. I kept it in for two weeks before I had to get it dyed out. I’m so glad I’ve never overplucked my eyebrows, though!

What are your top three make-up must-haves?

Concealer (for under-eye circles), mascara and bronzer are my go-to products. I don’t wear much make-up unless I’m going to an event, but I use these every day to make me look fresh and a bit more awake! When I do go out, though, I love to

experiment with different lip colours, or I’ll do my eyes in a cool way.

Any favourite products from the George range?

I love the George matte lipsticks because they are so creamy and really moisturise your lips. I’d never worn a nude lip colour before, as I didn’t think it would suit me – but now I’m a total convert.

I also love the orangey-red Runway shade; it’s a great ‘going out’ colour.

It’s Valentine’s Day this month – any top tips for the perfect date-night look?

‘I love to experiment with different lip colours’ necessarily very good if you’re going to be kissing your date, though!

When it comes to style, what do you like to wear?

I try to keep my look young and classy. I don’t like anything too short or low-cut. Right now, I’m really into jumpsuits for going out. I’m only 5ft 1in, but they make me feel so tall.

How do you try to keep healthy?

I’m all or nothing when it comes to going to the gym.

I’m either there all the time, or I don’t go at all. If I’m not exercising, I do watch what I’m eating

a bit more and try not to binge on sweet stuff, which I do sometimes have a bit of a problem with!

You’ve spoken on social media about dealing with anxiety. How have you been affected?

Anxiety is a word that’s often overused and, as a result, not everyone takes it seriously. Last year, mine got really bad and it was quite unbearable at times.

The silliest things would set me off. I’d put on a wash and then discover that I’d dropped a sock on the way – and that would make me have a panic attack.

How have you learned to deal with it?

I went to my GP and did some therapy sessions with a free NHS platform called Healthy Minds. It helped me to find out my triggers and try to deal with them.

It’s been a long process, but it’s definitely helped.

Even doing things like turning off my phone and reading, or going for a walk to get out of the house are a help. Sharing my story on

Instagram was definitely good for me, too. If I hadn’t been so open and honest about it, I don’t know where I’d be now.

You took part in Strictly in 2015. How did the show change your life?

Strictly had a huge effect on me. It was a learning curve – a very new experience. It taught me so much about confidence, and when the opportunity came up to tour with the stage production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s a year later, I felt I could do it!

And with an abundance of dating sites and apps, from Bumble to Tinder, now available, it’s never been easier to meet new matches. But what exactly is the state of dating in the modern age? Our panel of four people – two who are in relationships and two who are single – got together to discuss the path to true love…

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. Do you have any plans for the big day?

Rae: My other half Mark will probably take me away somewhere. Two months after we started dating, he took me to Budapest – that’s the sort of romantic thing he does.

Ellie: I think the longer you’ve been with someone, the less of a big deal Valentine’s Day becomes. My partner Steve and I will probably just get a takeaway and stay at home.

Sam: It’s a really good night to go out if you’re single because everyone’s looking to get a snog.

Lizzie: I actually have an appointment with the dental hygienist!

What do you – or did you – look for in a partner?

Ellie: I think it’s nice to find a good friendship; you need to genuinely get on. But you don’t have to be exactly the same as each other.

My boyfriend’s quite sociable and I’m like the biggest homebody ever, but he brings out my social side.

Lizzie: I would like to meet someone who loves what I love about myself.

I get quite excited about everything and I’m passionate – I like that part of me. I’ve dated guys before who didn’t seem to appreciate that.

Sam: I want someone who’s interesting. Sometimes, I’ll be on a date with a guy and I’ll think: ‘We’re only having a good time because I’m here making this fun for the both of us. Can you make me laugh, please?’

Rae: I agree! On my first date with Mark, we were sitting next to a couple who were obviously bored with each other, whereas we were chatting non-stop. I thought: ‘That was me six months ago with my third husband.’ You need to find someone who interests you.

Do you believe in soulmates?

Or love at first sight?

Sam: I believe in soulmates, but I do believe there’s more than one out there for everyone. Definitely about 10 each – but then there are seven billion people in the world, so maybe more…

Lizzie: I don’t believe in love at first sight, but you can have infatuation and then fall in love and become friends. I guess that’s the closest you come to having a soulmate.

‘I would like to meet someone who loves what I love about myself’

Rae: I’ve been in love at first sight 10 times over when I used to go on a night out!

What’s your ideal date night?

Lizzie: I’m always banging on about restaurants I want to try, so I’d like it if a guy just booked one and surprised me. That would show that he’d listened.

Ellie: I love having a night in. Getting some wine, cooking and eating dinner together. To me, that’s perfect.

Rae: I like going to a nice restaurant and, as I live by the seaside, there’s nothing better than a stroll along the beach as well.

What’s your chat-up line?

Sam: I don’t have a set line, but I sometimes pretend I know someone from somewhere. They will talk for a bit trying to figure out how they know you and, eventually, they’ll give up trying to place you and just chat normally.

It’s a good ice-breaker.

Lizzie: On the Bumble app, the woman has to comment first, so I try to mention something specific from the person’s profile because ‘Hi’ is really boring, isn’t it? In real life, I’d try to comment on something they were doing, like ordering a drink.

Ellie: Yes, even if someone had a really cringe-worthy chat-up line that made me laugh, I’d probably be more interested than if they just said hi.

What do you make of dating apps?

Rae: Dating is so much easier now because of all the apps out GOOD LIVING | 83

there. When I split up with my last husband, I looked online and there was so much choice.

Ellie: I went on Tinder because everyone else was on it, rather than because I was thinking about finding a boyfriend. I’m from Epping in Essex, so I had to trawl through a lot of fake tan and slicked-back hair before I finally found Steve. Even though we went to the same school, we’d both had such different lives.

I don’t think our paths would have crossed again without Tinder.

Sam: I think the existence of dating apps can sometimes make it harder to meet people in real life. I always give someone more credit if they’ve bothered to come up to me in a bar to ask for my number.

Have you seen any funny profiles?

Rae: Why do so many men think women find fish attractive? There are loads of profile pictures of men holding a great big carp!

What’s the worst date you’ve ever been on?

Ellie: Awkward dates are the worst, especially when you’re making all the effort with conversation and the other person is just giving one-word answers. Then they ask to meet up again!

Rae: I met a man online, and his profile picture only showed one side of his face. When we met up in person, the other side of his head and neck was covered in tattoos.

I was just looking at my car the whole time, wishing I could leave.

Lizzie: I had a date who kept telling

inappropriately rude stories. Then he asked if he could lick my feet…

Sam: I met up with this guy for a lunch date. When he arrived, it was clear he hadn’t been to bed the night before and he reeked of alcohol. We got chatting, then this other guy came and sat with us while he was waiting for his friends. I went to the loo and when I came back, they were snogging.

When you’ve had a bad date, how do you explain that you don’t want to see that person again?

Sam: Just be tactful. It doesn’t hurt to be tactful, does it?

Lizzie: I think you say thanks for the date, then if they ask about doing it again, I’d say maybe.

Then if they messaged me, I’d explain that I thought they were nice, but I just wasn’t sure we had that much in common. Dating can be brutal at times. I think it’s really important that we’re all a bit nicer to each other.

Have your ideas about love changed as you’ve grown older?

Lizzie: I’m more realistic now.

with my life as it is. If I meet someone and it’s right, then brilliant, but I don’t want to force it. I’m less worried about finding ‘the one’ now – I got to 30 as a single woman and didn’t explode into a ball of fire, so I’m going to be fine.

Rae: The main thing you realise as you get older is that whoever comes into your life has to be a bonus. They have to bring something to the party. If you have someone who’s negative, they need to go.

Ellie: For me, going to university was the start of a big change.

I became a lot more confident and sure of what I wanted. Now, even though I’m with someone, I do feel quite independent. We’re buying a house together at the moment, and even though we’re super-happy and excited, I know if that didn’t go ahead, I’d be OK. Sam: As you go from relationship to relationship, you learn something about yourself and about what you don’t want next time. It’s like a honing process.

When you’re single, do you mind going to weddings without a ‘plus one’?

Lizzie: No, I don’t mind. It’s important to remember that weddings are like the Instagram filters of relationships, though. You’re seeing that couple on their best day, so there can be an element of envy because you wonder if you’ll ever have that. Also, weddings where everyone is coupled-up can be a bit more challenging.

Sam: I actually love it. I don’t like going with a partner if I feel that I have to look after them. I operate really well socially on my own, so I prefer it.

If your friends were writing a dating profile for you, what would they say?

Rae: Probably ‘she’s not a very good judge of character’!

Sam: I think they would say I was quite open and giving, amusing and sometimes a bit crazy!

‘I got to 30 as a single woman and didn’t explode, so I’m going to be fine’

Ellie: I keep being told I’m wise.

I’m quite black and white; I’m not wishy-washy.

Lizzie: I think they’d say ‘fun, but hard work’. I’m quite lively, enthusiastic and outgoing.

What dating advice would you give your younger self?

Sam: I didn’t have a proper boyfriend until I was 26 and found it difficult because I felt I had a lot of love to give. But now, I would tell my younger self not to worry about it – because you’ll be beating them off with a stick when you’re older!

Rae: I would say not to even think about meeting the right one until you’re 35. Go out, travel and do whatever you want. Enjoy your life.

Ellie: Just be confident and don’t worry about it. Meet loads of people – whether they’re good or whether they’re bad, it’ll all be experience.

Lizzie: I would say the same. Chill out. Also, be honest about what you want and honest with yourself, and don’t ever underestimate what you’re worth.

How to win at the dating game

We asked dating agent and TV presenter Anna Williamson for her top tips… ● Avoid filters ‘There’s a tendency with app dating to filter your photos and words to within an inch of their lives, but honesty is the best policy to avoid embarrassment

further down the line. Not everyone is a genius when it comes to quippy captions, either, so don’t overthink it.’ ● Digital detox ‘Digital dating is great, but don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Be open to meeting people in real life, too, whether it’s through activities or hobbies. Put yourself out there!’ ● First dates ‘The key to a good first date is finding

something to do that will make you both feel at ease.

Not everyone likes eating in front of strangers, for example, so involve your date in the decision-making and ask what they would like to do. If you’re stuck for ideas, going for a coffee is a great place to start.’

‘Gwyneth Paltrow is the best cook!’

What’s your daily diet like?

I’m a big smoothie person. I usually work out first and then put together a concoction of spinach, blueberries, almond milk and some protein.

I’ll also do a little smoothie for my son, Revel. In our household, we eat a lot of turkey mince because it’s a great source of protein.

Foodie childhood memory?

Hot chocolate and Mum’s cinnamon rolls. I can smell them right now!

Neither of my parents were especially good cooks, so there was a lot of stuff out of boxes – nothing gourmet!

What kind of cook are you?

I have to follow recipes, but Renee has very good culinary intuition.

Whenever I cook, she always says, ‘Can I get in there and do my thing?’

She’s the boss in the kitchen and tells me what to do! Since we had Revel, I’m a lot better, though. Now that he’s eating solid food, I can step in and feed him. It’s a bond we have and it’s really special for

The best meal you’ve ever prepared?

I make very good chicken enchiladas.

The key is soured cream, added during cooking and at the end.

Your biggest culinary disaster?

The first time I decided to cook for my parents, I followed a recipe using chicken mince and my dad put it in his mouth, then spat it out.

‘What is this?!’ he yelled. I guess I didn’t know what ‘browning the meat’ meant, so it wasn’t actually cooked. They never asked me to cook again after that.

Your go-to order from room service?

When I’m in London, a lot of the room service menus have dishes from India. I think London does amazing Indian food, so my Indian cuisine experience has been heightened.

Have any celeb pals cooked for you?

Gwyneth Paltrow is the best cook!

I had a day at her house in London; it was me, Cameron Diaz and a bunch of other people. Gwyneth made a beautiful lunch. I remember fish tacos, with all these different vegetable sides. She makes everything taste so good – it was pretty cool.

What food do you miss when you’re away from home?

I miss eating Mexican food the most.

On the up side, I love being in the UK for milk chocolate digestives. You can’t really get them in the States. This time, I’ve stocked up to take some back for Renee. She’s so excited!
