Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’ As the season’s first green vegetables and flowers start to push through the ground, it’s a reminder of Sarah Thom how beautiful change can be. One of my absolute favourite types of apple is the classic British cooking variety Bramley, as its tart, fragrant flesh works wonders in classic crumbles and pies. With its thick skin, it bakes well whole but the flesh breaks down quickly when cooked, so it’s ideal for apple sauce. Another apple I have a soft spot for is the imported Pink Lady (right). Extra time in the sun gives these rosy globes their special blush, sweeter crunch and wonderful fizz – they hold together well when cooked and require less sugar than sharper varieties.

Try making apple crisps with them; slice very thinly, brush with honey and bake in a lowmedium oven until golden.

Ras el hanout & pomegranate glazed lamb with yogurt sauce This impressive joint has a delicious Middle Eastern-style coating – ideal with cooling yogurt and lightly spiced veg SERVES 10 READY IN 4 HRS 30 MINS PRICE PER SERVING £1.83

1 Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3.

2 Put 1 x Butcher’s Selection Lamb Leg (about 2.1kg) in a high-sided roasting tin. Using a sharp knife, make cuts in the lamb about 1.5cm apart.

Rub 2tbsp Asda Ras el Hanout all over the lamb, massaging it into the cuts.

3 Bash 7 cloves garlic and roughly chop 1 large onion and scatter around the meat. Pour 200ml Pom Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice into the tin, being careful not to wash off the spices.

4 Tightly cover the tin with foil. Roast for 3 hrs 30 mins until the lamb is tender and falling off the bone.

5 Meanwhile, to make the yogurt sauce, roughly chop 5g flat-leaf parsley, 5g mint and 5g dill, then crush 1 clove garlic. Add to a bowl with 250g fat-free natural Greek yogurt, 2tbsp pomegranate seeds and 1tbsp lemon juice. Add a splash of water if the sauce looks a little thick. Set aside.

6 Take the lamb out of the oven and carefully drain the cooking juices into a small pan, discarding the onion and garlic. Cover the lamb with foil again and return to the oven.

7 Skim any fat off the cooking juices and add 1tbsp honey. Bring to the boil. Allow to bubble over

a medium heat until reduced by ¾, making a syrupy glaze. This may take up to 20 mins.

8 Increase the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

9 Spoon half the glaze over the lamb and return to the oven, uncovered, for 15-20 mins.

10 Remove the lamb from the oven and spoon over the remaining glaze. Cover with a loose tent of foil and allow to stand for 20 mins before transferring to a warmed serving dish.

11 To serve, take another 2tbsp pomegranate seeds, put some in a small bowl and sprinkle the rest over the lamb with 1tbsp Asda Rose Petals. Roughly chop extra flat-leaf parsley, mint and dill and scatter over. Serve immediately with the bowls of yogurt sauce and pomegranate seeds on the side.

1 In a large measuring jug, make 850ml stock using 2 reduced-salt vegetable stock cubes.

3 Add 450g basmati rice (rinsed), 1 bay leaf and 3 whole cardamom pods to the pan. Fry for 1 min more.

4 Pour the stock over the rice in the pan and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 15 mins, or until all the stock has been absorbed and the rice is tender.

5 Chop 100g dried apricots and stir through the rice before serving.

Cumin baby carrots

1 Heat 2tsp rapeseed oil in a large frying pan.

Add 600g Chantenay carrots, halved if they are large, and 2 whole cloves garlic. Cook for 12-15 mins over a medium heat until the carrots are softened.

2 Add 1tsp cumin seeds and cook for 1 min to toast.

Drizzle over 1tbsp runny honey, stirring to coat the carrots. Sprinkle over some chopped flat-leaf parsley and serve immediately.

4 Roast the chicken for 1 hr 40 mins or until cooked, basting with pan juices every 30 mins.

Remove from the oven, cover with foil and rest for 20 mins. Spoon over more chimichurri to serve.

2 In a bowl, mix together 2tbsp Asda Harissa Paste, 1tsp rapeseed oil, juice 1 lemon and 1tbsp clear honey.

3 Remove any pin bones from 750g Asda Salmon Side and put skin-side down on a baking dish lined with nonstick baking paper. Spoon over the harissa dressing.

Griddled courgette salad

1 To make a salsa, chop 225g vine-ripened cherry tomatoes and 10g coriander. Finely chop ½ red onion and 1 red chilli, deseeded.

Mix together with 1tbsp extra-virgin olive oil and the juice and zest 1 lime.

Season with black pepper and set aside.

2 Heat a griddle pan or large frying pan over a high heat. Trim and cut 3 courgettes into slices and toss in 1tsp rapeseed oil. Working in batches, grill or fry the courgette slices for 1-2 mins on each side until they are coloured.

Bourbon pulled beef brisket This tasty, sticky sauce adds a flavour of Kentucky to your Easter celebrations – delicious with veg fritters and spicy ’slaw SERVES 8 READY IN 4 HRS 40 MINS PRICE PER SERVING £2.43

1 Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3 2 Put 1.8kg beef brisket (1 large piece or 2 smaller pieces) in a baking dish, pour over 100ml Bourbon and rub with 2tbsp Cajun seasoning. Chop 1 large onion and bash 6 cloves garlic. Add these to the dish with 2 bay leaves.

3 Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and cook in the oven for 4 hrs until the meat is tender and can be pulled apart with a fork.

4 When the beef is cooked, remove from the oven and carefully drain the cooking juices into a pan, discarding the onion, garlic and bay leaves. Skim off any fat.

5 Increase the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

6 Stir 30ml Bourbon, 2tbsp black treacle, 2tbsp tomato purée, 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce and 2tbsp honey into the cooking juices. Bring to the boil and simmer until thick.

7 Spoon over the brisket, and return to the oven, uncovered. Cook for 15-20 mins until the sauce is bubbling. Serve immediately with two forks for pulling the meat apart.

Classic coleslaw

2 Peel and grate 500g potato, put in a clean tea towel and squeeze well to remove excess moisture.

3 Put in a bowl with 600g parsnip, peeled and grated. Toss with 2tbsp cornflour and 2tbsp chopped chives.

Shape into 8 patties.

4 Heat 4tbsp rapeseed oil in a nonstick frying pan. Cook the rosti in batches for 2-3 mins on each side until golden.

5 Transfer to a baking tray and bake for 10 mins.

Serve scattered with extra chopped chives.

Add a twist to classic pea soup with fragrant green pesto

1 Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5.

2 Cook the onion in half the oil in a large pan on low for 8-10 mins until soft.

Add the potato and stock.

Bring to a boil then simmer, covered, for 20 mins.

3 Meanwhile, toss the bread in the rest of the oil.

Season with black pepper and spread on a baking tray. Bake for 10-15 mins, until crunchy and toasted.

4 Add the peas to the potato and onion mixture.

Bring back to the boil and simmer, covered, for 5 mins.

5 Stir in the pesto then cool for 15 mins. Blend to a purée and season with pepper.

6 Add the milk to the pea purée and heat through.

Serve the soup topped with the croutons and more black pepper.

This tasty stuffing makes a smaller joint go further

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4.

2 Cook the onion in the oil over a low heat for 8-10 mins until soft but not browned.

3 Put in a large bowl. Add the apricots, breadcrumbs, rosemary and milk, then season with black pepper.

Mix with a fork to combine.

4 Remove the string from the lamb and unroll the joint – there will be 2 pieces. Lay

on a large chopping board.

Spread the stuffing over both pieces, pressing down lightly. Roll up the smaller piece, lay this on the larger piece and roll that around it. Secure with string.

5 Put in a roasting tin, cover loosely with foil and roast for 1 hr. Remove the foil and cook for 30 mins.

6 When the meat is cooked, put on a warm plate, cover with foil and leave to rest in a warm place for 20 mins.

7 Carve the joint and serve immediately with the roast potatoes and green veg.

Cut strips of coconut with a peeler and toast in the oven

Shape the eggs and coat with blue icing

Sandwich the cake layers together with frosting

Use a toothbrush to add speckles to the frosted cake

is smooth. Whisk in 100ml of the coconut milk.

3 Sift over the flour and baking powder, add the remaining coconut milk and fold in gently with a metal spoon.

4 Spoon ⅓ of the cake mixture into one tin and the rest into the other.

Bake the smaller cake for 25 mins and the larger for 35 mins or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Cool in the tins for 10 mins then completely on a wire rack. Remove the baking paper. Leave the oven switched on.

5 Prep the decoration. Use the hammer and nail to pierce a hole in each ‘eye’ of the coconut. Pour out the liquid and keep in the fridge for another recipe. Bake the coconut whole for 20 mins. Allow to cool.

6 Break the coconut shell, remove and discard. The flesh should come away easily. Use a veg peeler to cut thin strips from half of the flesh. Save the rest in the fridge for future use.

7 Bake the strips on a baking sheet for 5 mins to toast lightly. Allow to cool.

8 If using Bounty bars, blitz into a soft ball of paste in a processor. Divide into 12 pieces and roll each one into an egg shape.

For marzipan, knead until soft and roll into 12 egg shapes.

9 Push a skewer into each of the eggs then leave to chill in the fridge for 15 mins.

10 Chop the fondant icing.

Microwave in a non-metallic bowl with 1tsp water for 30-45 secs. Stir, then heat for 10-15 secs until melted.

Add 1 or 2 drops of the blue food colouring gel then stir until you get an even, pale-blue shade and a smooth consistency.

11 Drizzle each egg with blue icing to coat. Push the ends of the skewers into the empty egg box so they stand upright. Allow the eggs to dry for 45 mins.

12 For the frosting, whisk 175g butter until light and fluffy. Whisk in the icing sugar until smooth.

When the melted white chocolate is cooled, but before it turns solid, add it along with the 2tbsp coconut milk. Whisk again until light and fluffy.

13 Split the large cake in two horizontally and put one round on a serving plate. Spread with ¼ of the frosting. Top with the other half, then spread with ¼ of the frosting, and top with the smaller cake so you have 3 layers. Whisk 3 drops of blue colouring into the remaining frosting and smooth over the top and sides of the cake.

14 Mix ½tsp black food colour and 3 drops water in a cup. Dip the toothbrush in then flick the bristles with your thumb, to spatter the cake and eggs with speckles. Allow to dry, then arrange strips of coconut and a few eggs on top, like a nest, and the rest around the base, to decorate.

EGG BOX CHICKS You’ll need…

Egg box ● Paint ● Paint brushes ● Wiggly eyes from an Asda Craft Pack ● Coloured card ● PVA glue ● Glue spreader ● Sweets 1 One 6-egg box makes 3 chicks.

To start, carefully cut out the 6 individual ‘cups’ (2 for each chick) from the bottom of the egg box.

2 Paint the outside of the cups yellow and leave to dry.

3 Cut out 6 chick feet and 6 triangles for the beaks from orange card, and 6 slightly bigger triangles for the wings from yellow card. Leave about 1cm extra at the base of each shape to fold into a tab for gluing.

4 Glue one orange triangle onto each cup – make sure to line up the 2 halves of each beak. Stick wiggly eyes to 3 of the cups. Glue the feet and the wings to the other 3 cups.

5 Fill the bottom half of the chick with treats such as Smarties, then carefully rest the head on top.

WOODEN SPOON FACES You’ll need…

1 Cook 300g macaroni according to the instructions on the pack.

2 Meanwhile, melt 20g butter in a large pan over a low heat. Add 3 leeks, washed and roughly chopped, and 10g fresh thyme, leaves picked.

Cover and cook for 10-15 mins until softened, stirring occasionally.

3 Preheat the grill to high.

4 Add 40g plain flour to the leeks in the pan, stir to combine, increase the heat and cook for 2 mins.

1 Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5.

2 Chop the sausages and leftover veg into equal-sized pieces.

3 Heat the oil in a large pan. Fry the onion until golden. Add the cornflour and stir well. Slowly add the stock and mustard, bring to the boil, then gently simmer for 5-8 mins to thicken. Add

the milk, sausages and veg, season with black pepper and mix well.

4 Tip the mixture into a large pie dish.

Wet the lip of the dish with water, lay the pastry on top and crimp the edges.

Cut off any excess and score the top.

5 Brush the beaten egg over the pastry. Bake for 35-40 mins until the pastry is crisp and golden.

6 Cook the peas according to the pack instructions. Serve with the pie.

Chef Jimmy Doherty, 42, lives on a farm in Suffolk with his wife and their three daughters ‘I was raised in Clavering, a village in the heart of Essex, though my mum grew up in the East End of London. She had lived through rationing, so our household was very resourceful.

She’d never let food go to waste and always turned leftovers into a tasty new meal. She used to make this hearty pie out of leftover turkey, sausage or any other meat and the whole family loved tucking into it! I’ve definitely inherited her no-waste mentality.

Thanks to Mum, I became kitchen-savvy at a young age. If she worked late, I’d crack on with making dinner. By the time I went to uni, I was quite accomplished – I’d make bread, grow veg and buy fish from the market.

olive oil * 2tsp 2 red onions, chopped * 3 carrots, finely chopped * 1 clove garlic, chopped * 500g lean beef or lamb mince * 1tsp Marmite * 200ml hot stock made with * 1 reduced-salt beef stock cube can chopped tomatoes * 400g 1tsp tomato purée * ¼tsp Worcestershire sauce * 2 bay leaves * 800g potatoes, peeled and * chopped unsalted butter * 25g 4tbsp semi-skimmed milk * 40g Asda 30% Less Fat Mature * Grated British Cheese 1 Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4.

2 Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and gently fry the onions and carrots for 10 mins. Add the garlic and the mince and cook until browned. Drain off any fat.

3 Stir the Marmite into the stock.

Add to the mince mixture with the chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and bay leaves.

Season with black pepper and simmer for 25 mins.

4 Meanwhile, bring a large pan of water to the boil and cook the potatoes for 20 mins, or until tender. Drain well.

5 Mash the potatoes mixing in the butter, milk and some black pepper.

6 Transfer the mince mixture to an ovenproof dish and top with the mash, then the cheese. Cook in the oven for 30 mins until the cheese is golden brown. Sprinkle with pepper to serve.

Author and TV presenter Katie Piper, 34, lives in London with her husband and their two daughters ‘My mum is an amazing cook. Her shepherd’s pie is legendary – the recipe was from an old cookbook but she’d adapted it. Her trick? Stir in a teaspoon of diluted Marmite to bring out the umami flavours of the meat. Genius! It was incredible at the best of times but, at weekends, when mum surprised us with a crispy, cheesy topping or by blending a dollop of double cream into the mash, it’d be extra indulgent.

Growing up, I cherished our family meal time – no matter what we were eating, it was a time when we all grouped together to chat about things like school, hobbies and our plans for the weekend. I’m now carrying on that dinner-time tradition with my own family. After my daughter Belle, three, was born, Mum passed the recipe down to me and Belle loves it!

Singer Alexandra Burke, 29, lives in Hertfordshire with her fiancé ‘I can still remember coming home after playing with my friends to the delicious smell of Mum’s rock cakes baking at our house in Holloway, north London. Mum [Soul II Soul singer Melissa Bell] sadly passed away last year, so memories like this – of her doing something caring and kind – are of great comfort to me.

Mum was my biggest inspiration in music but I admired her cooking prowess, too. As a single mum of four, she was fastidious about putting good, nutritious food on the table. I respected that immensely and have learned by her example. I got engaged just before Christmas last year and, just as Mum’s rock cakes became a family custom, I hope to hand over the recipe to my own children some day. Blueberry & soft cheese muffins Creamy, oaty and juicy with sweet berries

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/ 160C Fan/Gas 4. Fill a 12-hole muffin tray with paper cases.

2 Whisk 2 eggs until light and fluffy. In a separate jug, whisk 100ml rapeseed oil, 100ml semi-skimmed milk and 100g Asda Creamy Original Soft Cheese. Gradually whisk into the eggs.

3 Beat in 150g golden caster sugar, 400g self-raising flour and 100g Grower’s Selection Blueberries (save 25g from the pack to decorate).

1 Soak 7 leaves sheet gelatine in cold water for 10 mins until soft. Squeeze out excess liquid. Set aside.

2 In a pan, bring 270ml Pom Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice to a simmer. Remove from the heat, add 3 of the gelatine leaves and stir to dissolve.

Divide between 10 jelly moulds or ramekins and chill for 4 hrs or until set.

3 Split 1 vanilla pod and scrape out the seeds. Put in a pan with 200ml milk and 150ml double cream then warm gently. Remove from the heat and stir through the remaining gelatine

leaves until dissolved.

Pass the liquid through a sieve and leave to cool, stirring occasionally.

4 Add 500g Asda Full Fat Greek Style Yogurt (at room temperature) to the cream mixture.

Whisk to combine.

5 Spoon the mixture over the pomegranate jelly, cover with clingfilm and chill overnight or until set.

6 To serve, loosen the jelly by running a sharp, warm

Orange, raspberry & almond cake

Orange purée and ground almonds give this bake a lovely moist texture SERVES 20 READY IN 2 HRS 10 MINS, PLUS COOLING PRICE PER SERVING 37p

1 Put 2 oranges in a small pan, cover with water and a lid, bring to the boil and simmer for 2 hrs until soft.

Drain and leave to cool.

Cut the oranges into chunks, remove any pips, and blend until smooth.

2 Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3.

Grease and line a 23cm round springform cake tin with baking paper.

3 Separate 6 eggs. Put the yolks in a bowl with 75g maple syrup, 200g ground almonds, 100g self-raising flour and the blended orange pulp (380g). Beat together until combined.

4 In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks.

Stir ⅓ into the batter until well combined, then gently fold in the remaining portion with a large metal spoon. Carefully fold 150g Grower’s Selection Raspberries through the batter.

5 Pour the batter into the cake tin, smooth the top and sprinkle with 20g flaked almonds. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 45-50 mins or until golden, risen and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

5 In a large bowl, mix 200g selfraising flour, 1tsp bicarbonate of soda and the lime zest.

6 In a jug, beat 2 eggs then whisk with 150ml sunflower oil. Whisk into the flour mixture until smooth, then stir through the blended and chopped pineapple.

7 Divide the batter between the cases. Bake for 25-30 mins or until the muffins are risen, golden and a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Cool on a rack.

8 Mix 200g soft cheese with 1tsp vanilla bean paste. Spread over the muffins, then top with the toasted pineapple and lime slivers.

Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes through to the centre of each cake.

5 Meanwhile, put 1 sachet sugar-free lime jelly in a

jug and pour over 280ml boiling water. Stir to mix, leave to cool, then chill in the fridge.

6 Once the jelly is almost set, pour over the cake, tilting the tins so the jelly fills the holes. Cover with clingfilm and chill for 4 hrs or until the jelly is set.

7 Remove the cakes from the tins. Whip 300ml whipping cream, 2tbsp of the lime zest and 2tbsp agave syrup until thick.

Spread ½ on top of 1 cake, sprinkle with ½ the oats and top with the other cake.

Finish with the remaining cream, oats and lime zest.

CLASSIC BEAUTY Grandma Verity McDonagh, 81, lives in Hove with her husband. She says: ‘The first make-up I remember buying was a Richard Hudnut lipstick. I was 16 and it cost the equivalent of 50p – a third of my weekly wage – but I loved the pretty pink shade and wore it to work. It made me feel I could face the world!

After the war, there wasn’t much make-up as some of the essential ingredients like castor oil were unavailable. I’d rub an old lipstick into my cheeks for rouge and put Vaseline on my eyelashes so they looked long and shiny.

My mum, although very glam herself, didn’t approve of my sister Antonia and I wearing make-up in our teens. So we’d pinch lipsticks from her dresser

and put them on around the corner before a date or a dance. We wouldn’t have a mirror, so it was always smudged and we’d have to wipe it off before we got home!

I didn’t wear foundation until my twenties and then I’d wear Pan Stik, which was so thick it made my skin look flawless. I’d go to the pictures and imagine I was the actress Joan Fontaine with her glowing skin.

My make-up has always been simple. I spent two decades as an Avon Lady, but I wasn’t fussed about trends and would do my own thing. I loved bright mascaras and would team them with my outfits.

There’s so much more to put on now, I don’t know where to begin – but I do like trying new things. When I wear make-up, people often tell me I look like Jane Fonda, which is a huge compliment. I love what I’m wearing today – I’m not washing this off tonight!’

STYLE UPDATE Mum Susie Silvey, 57, is a therapist and lives in north London with her daughter Sarah. She says: ‘Twiggy, the original British supermodel, was my style icon when I was a teen.

I remember my mum always being beautifully made up with her dark lipstick but, for my generation, it was all about pale lips and dark eyes like Twiggy.

We’d even draw on our eyelashes to match hers!

I was obsessed with fashion magazines from the age of 15 – I’d spend hours looking at all the models.

One of my favourites was Maudie James. She was blonde like me and I used to copy all her looks. I was so desperate to have those thin, perfectly arched 1920s

‘I wish the big brow trend was around when I was younger!’ brows that I plucked mine away in my teens – they haven’t grown back since!

My make-up got a lot heavier after I left home and was free to spend my weekend job wages on brown eyeshadow and thick black mascara. I cut my own hair to save money and would separate out egg whites and yolks to make face and hair masks.

Egg yolk was supposed to naturally lighten your hair and I was always trying to

make mine blonder. I once braved using a sachet of hair dye, but when I went swimming my hair turned green. It took weeks to come out and I was mortified!

When I worked as a part-time actress in my thirties, I preferred to do my own make-up most of the time, but the make-up girls at the BBC taught me a few tricks. They would cover my face in translucent powder to remove shine and help the other products

to stay on longer. If I’m not working or going out, I don’t wear any foundation. I’ve noticed over the years that wearing as little as possible makes my skin look healthier.

Nowadays, I use tinted moisturiser, which I love, but we never had it back then. You either wore Pan Stik or just went without.

Make-up today seems much more technical – it’s all about creating shadows and blending seamlessly. I think it’s lost a bit of the fun, but I do love the big eyebrows trend. I wish they’d been fashionable in my time.’

FRESH LOOK Daughter Sarah Silvey-Fine, 26, is an admin assistant from London. She says: ‘Make-up is certainly a huge confidence booster for me.

I started wearing concealer from the age of 15 because I was self-conscious about my dark under-eye circles, and it’s been my safe haven ever since. I used to suffer from acne, so covering it up with foundation made me feel far more comfortable in my skin.

I didn’t start wearing proper foundation until I was about 18, which now feels quite late. My cousin, Amy, is 14 and she can contour like a Kardashian, but when I was young, we didn’t have access to extensive make-up routines from the likes of celebrities.

I had a phase at uni where I wore a lot of fake tan, but I also learned how to apply cosmetics properly from a friend who was a make-up artist.

I learnt how to pick the right foundation for my skin tone – and how to avoid that dreaded orange line on my jaw.

Social media definitely influences the way I do my make-up now – it feels as though the rules on application are stricter.

It’s all about that defined, airbrushed look that highlights your cheekbones and makes your face look slimmer. I follow a lot of bloggers and Insta-stars with flawless skin and I look at the products they use. Some of my friends are really into recreating that inflated-lips look – it might be in vogue but it’s a bit much for me.

The make-up on today’s shoot is more stripped back than what I might usually wear, but it’s made me realise I don’t need to cake my face in lots of foundation. Sometimes I forget what I look like underneath my make-up!’

aving helped to deliver more than 500 babies in her 10 years as a midwife, mum of four Clemmie Hooper, 33, knows a thing or two about pregnancy and labour. ‘I’ve seen it all,’ explains Clemmie. ‘From home and water births to births in the back of a taxi! I’ve delivered twins (including my own) and seen triplets being born.’

Clemmie shares her ‘girl gang’ – Anya, 10, Marnie, seven, and identical twoyear-old twins Ottilie

and Delilah – with husband, Simon, 35. In 2011 she set up a website (gasandairblog.com) to share her experiences with expectant mums and lift the lid on the taboo subjects surrounding pregnancy and birth.

Her no-nonsense blog was a hit and she has now racked up almost 420,000 followers on Instagram.

Morning sickness The term ‘morning’ is misleading – it can strike at any time of day. How did I get through it? You just have to eat! I used to eat before I got out of bed. I would have snacks in my bedside table, like a digestive biscuit, an apple or an orange. I ate what my body wanted.

Don’t focus on your due date It’s thought that only 2-5% of babies are born on their actual due date.

So I don’t call it a ‘due date’ because it’s not – it’s an estimated delivery date!

If you’re worried about anything, always ask.

I’d suggest considering: What does the local hospital offer? Is there a pool? Do they offer epidurals? How many birth partners can you have with you in hospital? Do you have to use the closest hospital or can you choose another one?

Packing your hospital bag Think about the three Ws: What’s it for? Who’s it for?

When’s it for? Here’s my list for a kick-ass birthing bag… ❍ A wide headband – it helped me get my hair off my face when I felt hot ❍ Earphones – make sure you load your favourite playlists onto your phone ❍ A really good lip balm.

All that breathing and gas and air can make your lips super-dry. I should know ❍ You definitely need big pants. I rate TENA Lady pants because you can just chuck it all away in one go ❍ I would also recommend taking a pillow and a hot water bottle or wheat bag – these were fantastic for me in early labour ❍ Snacks of some description ❍ Water’s another essential, ideally in a sports bottle

ARE YOU IN LABOUR? POSSIBLE SIGNS As with anything to do with pregnancy and birth, everyone is different.

So, just because your sister had a show and went into labour that day, it doesn’t mean the same will happen to you. Here’s my checklist… ➻ Your waters might go – sometimes this can be a slow trickle ➻ Diarrhoea and/or feeling nauseous ➻ Dull lower backache that may require paracetamol to ‘take the edge off’ ➻ Achy tops of the thighs ➻ A sensation of not quite feeling right

The most important advice I can give you is to speak up. Don’t ever feel like you are being a nuisance if you go into hospital due to something that’s worrying you. Anything you are worried about, you must always speak up. Midwives and doctors – that’s why we’re all here.

Babies have a kind of sixth sense – as soon as you are lying down, it’s their cue to throw a party on your bladder. I’d suggest a warm bath before bed as it can make such a difference. Add some lavender oil to the water, light a few candles and zone out. The warmth of the water will help to ease your aching back, plus you may get some big movements and it’s a lovely way to connect with your baby.

‘I have two breakfasts!’

What do you eat for breakfast?

My alarm goes off at 4am and I’m at work for 4.20am. At 5am I have a black coffee and chopped-up apples with peanut butter, which keeps me going until I get home at 9.30am.

My second breakfast is always rye toast, poached eggs and avocado.

Once I’m off air, I’m ravenous!

What’s your go-to lunch dish?

Kale and pumpkin seeds stir-fried in olive oil, garlic and soy sauce – if you fry kale it’s a bit like tasty Chinese seaweed. Kale is supposed to be good for you – I’ve tried to eat it raw in smoothies but I don’t like the taste!

Do you ever find it tough to eat well?

After I have a nap and go to the gym, at 2.30pm I want to raid the cupboard for calories. The temptation is to have a cup of tea with some chocolate cherries or half a packet of biscuits.

What do you cook for the family?

I like to cook from scratch. I recently made chicken and leek pie, toad in the hole as well as chicken and tarragon risotto. Everything is always homemade – unless I’ve been

working all day, then I might be tempted by a takeaway!

What kind of cook are you?

I’m capable but not imaginative.

If I don’t have everything I need for a dish I know what to substitute – like dill instead of tarragon. You can still do a recipe even if you don’t have every single ingredient.

Childhood favourite?

Chocolate cake made by my grandma, who died a few years ago. My mum kept the recipe and still makes it for the boys.

It’s one of those solid, familiar recipes and reminds me of tea with Grandma. I adored her.

Do you eat meat?

When I was 13, I became vegetarian to support animal welfare. Then, aged 30, just before I got pregnant with my first child, I got it into my head that I needed more protein and I’ve eaten fish ever since. I cook meat every night for the boys, though.

Worst meal of your life?

When I was at university I went to a mate’s house for a dinner party and they made a red wine risotto.

It turned out grey. It was so awful.

Has Piers Morgan [TV co-host] ever invited you to dinner?

I’ve had to nip into his house to use the loo but I’ve never been for dinner!

I know that his ‘spaghetti Morganese’ – the Piers version of spaghetti Bolognese – is legendary. According to him, anyway!
