Stress and tips on how to deal with it Arfa Vaquas STAFF WRITER
Stress is an overwhelming emotion that often emerges from a sense of anxiety and worry from a particularly overbearing situation. While we do not possess direct control over this emotion, there are ways to cope with it. This is called stress management. A myriad of
the troubling situation in a more optimistic light, while simultaneously learning to cope and handle your emotions better. In such a fast-paced society, it’s easy to feel like everyone is moving ahead of us, but in reality, we are all riding in a similar boat: preparing for exams while juggling personal responsibilities. So, if you feel stressed, bear in mind that you are not alone.
coping with stress that you may find helpful in your day to day life:
1
Change your perspective
Look at things from another viewpoint; try to completely understand what you’re going through; accept the way you feel and try to approach the situation differently.
2
Close your eyes
Take a deep breath. Breathe. Let yourself sort out your thoughts; try making a mental mind map of what you’re going through; try to think of a solution or just let yourself breathe and don’t think of a thing.
3
Scribble it!
STRESS CURVE A graphical representation of how stress can affect someone.
individuals within society consider stress to be related directly to ‘anger issues’ and link it to a negative stereotype. However, this is far from the truth. Stress management is like a tool to help you ‘deal’ with stress so that you take control of your emotions to see the troubling situation in a more optimistic light,
It’s completely normal to feel stressed and anxious when dealing with several assignments or a pile of deadlines. You may even find yourself stressed without any obvious cause, which is also entirely valid. Although these may not work for everyone, ahead are a few tips on
A friend gave me this tip when I was stressed (Thank you, Z!) and said, ‘If you have any sticky notes or a notebook or a piece of paper, scribble down your thoughts and emotions, let them out till its full extent in your own words or even draw it out and then throw it away or keep it in a jar’. While you can’t ‘throw away’ your stress, you can release it in a way that might help you feel even a little better. Every step, no matter how small, can take you to far
and great places.
4
Remind yourself that you’re not alone
Finally, remind yourself that you’re not alone - as many of us bury ourselves in stressful emotions, we tend to isolate ourselves while believing that we are alone in our suffering. On the contrary, your friends, family, or anyone you feel comfortable with are there to help you tackle these difficult times, so you can try letting things out and ranting to them. And sometimes, if that doesn’t help, and there’s no one to go to, you need to remind yourself again, either way, that you are not alone and that you are loved. You can try finding relief in doing the things you enjoy, such as reading, writing, playing games or even listening to music. There are various ways to ease stress, but what matters most is finding what works for you and helps to alleviate your anxiety. Everyone deals with stress differently. Some may go to professionals such as counsellors to talk to them, and some may merely talk to their loved ones or do activities that bring them comfort and happiness as a way to cope with the stress they feel. Your responsibility is to find out what really helps you, reminding yourself that you are loved and that you will figure it out.

here are approximately 1.5 million pet owners across the globe today, most of whom comprise owners of the unfortunate clichè: cats and dogs. Despite being such conventional creatures to keep as pets, a select number of students at ASCS have opted for more unique and distinct pets to welcome into their homes.
Maria & Albert Maria Noor, a student in Year 9, is the proud owner of an endearing chinchilla named Albert, who found his way to her heart under unique circumstances. Albert is a rescue animal who came from “a broken home with domestic violence”, where he was “treated very badly”. This revelation of his tumultuous past was excruciating for Maria to hear, and seeing it with her own eyes propelled her “to do something and take action”. In terms of her first impressions of Albert, she was scared that he would not trust her and that she would have to let him go. However, she patiently persevered since she sincerely hoped to “give him a really good life” because she knew he did not have one before. This allowed Maria to embark on a diligent quest to earn his trust and help him find peace. Initially, “it was really hard” to gain his trust, because “he did not have a good trust with me or anyone in my family”, and was unfamiliar with them. To earn his trust, she “tried to spend as much time as I could with him”, spending countless hours by his side, whether playing or simply being present, so she could make her presence more familiar to him. Eventually, this brought rise to Maria’s most memorable moment with Albert, which she recalled to be “when I first held him and gained his trust enough to pick him up into
the air”. Therefore, it is no surprise that earning his trust was “one of the most rewarding things ever”. This experience taught her the value of patience, which was reinforced when she also got a cat, as “it showed me that I have to be slow and just take my time because I can't gain trust fast and I used to think that until I met Albert.” Although getting a cat slightly impeded her bond with Albert, as she focused “a lot of attention on the cat”, in the past year she has been working hard to revive her relationship with Albert, allowing it to flourish further.
Loma & the Birds Conversely, Loma Mohamed, a student in Year 11 with a family of vibrant birds, adds a touch of humour to her pet narrative. Loma has a total of five birds named Zabul, Kabul, Raabula, Lulu and Didi, who include a mother, a father and three children. She got her birds in April
2022 from “some guy who wanted to get rid of them.” Despite the unorthodox manner of acquiring the birds, Loma’s deep ardour towards her birds outweighs her birds' being supposedly unwelcome. “My birds are so energetic and sweet the house feels empty without their chirping and colourful feathers”, she devotedly claimed. However, it is likely that the mother of the birds soon fell into an existential crisis as she began eating her eggs, which Loma eventually deduced was a calcium deficiency, though this soon evolved into the mother “plucking the feathers of her babies”, and finally “eating her babies alive”, which, according to Loma, “was not very cool of her”. Ultimately, Loma and her family decided to “sell her and the father”, leaving them with a white and blue budgie, a yellow and green budgie and a “pretty” albino. Over time, these colours became more vivid and luminous, which is an

pets of ASCS indication of the bird's growth, rendering them notably more captivating. When asked what the most rewarding aspect of having a bird was, Loma replied, “Sometimes I walk near to the cage and the one who likes me the most, she jumps up to the top of the cage whenever she sees me. It's so cute.” On the contrary, there is always “the impending doom of whether or not they're going to poop on you or not”, which is an undoubted fright. A noteworthy lesson Loma has learnt from the birds is that “jealousy is a kind of animal instinct. It's not just a human thing because they get jealous of each other all the time”, which signifies that birds and humans are more alike than what meets the eye. Loma later addressed a peculiar accident that occurred with one of her birds, where they flew out the window. While she was supposedly playing with them, there was a little gap on the bottom of the cage that was left open because she “obviously like(s) to open the cage door a little bit to play with them”. According to Loma, “I didn’t let him out of the window. He flew out by accident”, or so she says. Unfortunately, this bird was also her “second favourite” bird as he was calm and unproblematic, so it is no secret this must have been an exceptionally catastrophic experience for Loma.
Ritwika & Bubbles Finally, Ritwika Jisanth, a student in Year 11, probes into the captivating realm of her parrot fish – an ironic pursuit considering her mild phobia around fish. Despite having multiple fish, Ritwika’s favourite fish is named Bubbles, who she adores and finds quite lovable. Her journey alongside fish is no recent affair; fish have been consistently intertwined in her life. In her recollection, she shared “When I was little I wasn't that scared of fish because I used to do this like at my grandparents' house. They had this huge pond and there were guppies in them and I would fish them out to play”. Over time, Ritwika has owned fire fish, Cuban fish and shark fish, further amplifying the irony of her slight agitation towards fish. However, she claimed this is likely to have stemmed from a frantic experience from her childhood, where “a fish jumped out of the water tank and it fell near me and I got so terrified”. Upon being asked if she ever wondered what it would be like to be a fish, Ritwika
replied “Yeah, not in my tank, but being a solo fish would be fun” since her tank is a disorderly warzone at times. In terms of activities her fish particularly enjoy, she felt that “feeding time” was the most prominent one, since the fish will “try to jump out of the tank”, which is also comically reflective of humans. Jealousy also seems to be a notable quality in Ritwika’s fish, since she also owns a cat named Roxy. She found that “Bubbles will look out. She will stare deeply into Roxy's eyes… and sit on the sofa near the aquarium”. She also theorised that if her fish could talk, “they would try to get rid of Roxy''.

Social media has fully taken over our lives in recent years. Globally, there are 4.9 billion social media users! What is the experience like?
How often do you interact at school?
What do interactions at school look like?
(T.M.) Very very long days. (I.) Seven to four, it’s alright.
(D.M.) Not a lot but at least once a day. (N.M.) She is a normal student, I don’t involve with her work or speak to (her) teachers or take any advantage of that.
(M.AQ.) Sometimes I’m walking down the hallways and then I have good conversations with my Mum. Compared to my old school in the UK, that never existed. (D.AQ.) Sometimes I get pats on my back when I pass my Mum in the hall which is nice.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a staff child? (I.) I can go get money from him if I’m hungry, but other than that everyone says they’re gonna snitch on me to my dad. Do you think working together has brought you closer? (T.M.) No. (I.) We’re basically the same as we were 10 years ago. Do you guys have any interactions at school? (T.M.) When he needs money. (I.) Just talking about what we have to do... who’s going where, who’s doing what.
Do you think working together has brought you closer? (D.M.) Definitely! We’re always talking on the way to school and back from school. (N.M.) Yes, of course! We are talking all the time when we are coming in the morning... (and) she tells me stories. How do you imagine your graduation will impact your lives? (N.M.) I think I will feel very sad on the day of the graduation. But of course I will feel happy and I will be very proud. God bless her. (D.M.) I know for a fact that it‘s going to be so hard for me not to go to school everyday with my mom... not working side by side with each other all the time anymore.
Are you losing a sense of independence by attending and working at the same school? (A.Q.) I don’t think you lose a sense of independence because you’re still pretty much doing everything in an independent way. (D.AQ.) I haven’t really lost my independence. My Mum has actually helped me become quite independent. How would Dawud and Musa graduating affect things? (D.AQ.) We’ll still live in the same house so we’ll always be together. (A.Q) I would feel the difference, but then it’s nice that we did have this time together.
It’s time for a digital detox. Abdullah Farooq STAFF WRITER
In a world where our screens have more face time with us than actual faces, it's no surprise we're all starting to look a little pixelated! Did you know that too much screen time can cause eye strain, sleep disruption, and mental health issues? But don't worry! We can recall how to communicate with actual people by stepping away from the digital world (I know, it's terrifying). Disconnecting from screens and technology frees us
from the constant need to check for alerts and enables us to forge real connections with people. Since screen glare disturbs our brain's resting routines, it may help us get better sleep. To minimise screen dependency:
1Set screen-free hours
You may set apart specified times when you don't use your phone or any other technology; instead, you could be playing with your friends at the park.
2Use apps
3Turn off notifications
Apps like OneSec allow you to be more intentional with your time as it sets up a time limit for each app. For instance, if you've chosen YouTube within the app, every time you open it, a prompt will ask, "Do you really want to watch now?" It's a gentle reminder to be deliberate with your screen time!
Each message causes the release of dopamine, which might result in addiction. Notifications also present an enticing pleasure feedback loop that might force us into building unconscious and habitual ties to our devices.

Additionally, pop culture often highlights social justice issues through various artistic mediums, promoting constructive change and addressing disparities.
Harmful Norms in Pop Culture Nonetheless, pop culture has a dual impact, as it can also promote harmful norms, including materialism and consumerism that link personal success to possessions, leading to financial stress and neglected well-being. For instance, unrealistic body standards in the media can cause body image issues, low self-esteem, or even eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. Furthermore, the glorification of violence can desensitise people to real-world consequences, potentially increasing brutality and reducing empathy. By both recognising and challenging these harmful norms, we
can create a healthier media landscape. In the end, it's critical to recognise that pop culture is a complex phenomenon that affects individuals differently based on their unique circumstances and viewpoints. Some people might be significantly influenced by the media they consume, whereas others might be more resistant and critical in their consumption. To enable thoughtful navigation of the media landscape, it is essential to promote media literacy and critical thinking. Responsible content creators and influencers also play a pivotal role in shaping the narrative, as they can actively choose to reinforce virtuous norms and challenge harmful ones. Knowing that pop culture contains both positive and negative components enables us to interact with it more consciously, fostering a healthier and more informed relationship with the media and pop culture as a whole.

Willy Wonka, the mysterious chocolatier with a flair for the peculiar, has been a beloved character for centuries. From the pages of Roald Dahl's renowned novel, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," to the silver screen, we've seen this funny figure take on numerous tastes throughout the years, with each actor adding his own magical sprinkling.
Gene Wilder Perfection's Pioneering Pastiche Our adventure begins with the one and only Gene Wilder, the guy who originally portrayed Willy Wonka in the 1971 classic "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." With a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin, Wilder's Wonka was like the whimsical uncle you always wished you had. His performance was a lovely combination of youthful curiosity and enigmatic knowledge. Wilder's portrayal stayed loyal to Roald Dahl's vision, and it's difficult not to swoon or geek at how perfectly he caught the character's soul. Willy Wonka was funny, friendly, and quirky, a confectionary genius with undeniable appeal.
Johnny Depp The Mad-Hatter Meets the Factory Fast forward to 2005, when Johnny Depp, famed for his odd roles, took

on the role of Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Depp's Wonka was a cross between the Mad Hatter from "Alice in Wonderland" and a rock star experiencing a midlife sugar crisis.
Everything in this room is eatable, even I'm eatable. But that is called 'cannibalism,' my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies. With his unique top hat, mismatched clothes, and tendency for making spectacular entrances, Depp's interpretation elevated the character to a new level of weirdness. While it was a significant divergence from Wilder's original Wonka, it was an enjoyable and innovative variation that demonstrated Depp's ability to play larger-than-life characters.
Christian Borle Broadway's Brilliant Bonbon Willy Wonka gets a Broadway makeover in 2013, featuring Christian Borle in the starring role. Borle's Willy Wonka in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical" was equally extravagant and wonderfully over-the-top. His bright and colourful performance

had the audience in hysterics.
Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple. Willy Wonka became increasingly more extravagant and dramatic when he transitioned from movie to stage. Borle gave the figure a whole new depth, maintaining faithfulness to the core while adding a Broadway-style flair, similar to a candy bar with extra sprinkles.
Timothée Chalamet The Willy Wonka for the Instagram Generation In 2023, Timothée Chalamet, the Hollywood heartthrob, accepts the golden ticket to play the newest Willy Wonka in a prequel to Roald Dahl's classic, promising to investigate the character's roots. character. While we have yet to fully appreciate Chalamet's interpretation, it's safe to say that it'll be a modern take on the legendary figure, embedded with the charm and weirdness that has made Willy Wonka an all-time favourite. As we come to the end of our delightful voyage through Willy Wonka's history on movie and stage, it's clear that each actor has left their own, sugar-coated imprint on this legendary character. Willy Wonka continues to be a figure that keeps us going back for more, from Gene Wilder's ageless charm to Johnny Depp's unique twist, Christian Borle's Broadway sparkle, and the promise of Timothée Chalamet's young flair. So, whether you love the classics or are looking forward to the new tastes of the upcoming Willy Wonka prequel, one thing is certain: the delicious, odd world of Willy Wonka is always worth a visit, no matter which strange actor is behind the top hat and bow tie.
