Introduction Lithko Contracting is proud to sponsor the 2022 “Concrete Solutions” ASC Student Competition problem. Welcome and thank you for your participation.

Concrete has been a leading building material for over 2,000 years. Every project involves the use of concrete in some way, and for some projects concrete is the main building material. Modern ready-mixed concrete also provides remarkable flexibility in meeting the needs of challenging design and sustainability considerations.

The ASC Competition does an excellent job in providing an environment for the competitors to experience life in the construction world. Participation in the Concrete Solutions Competition will provide you the opportunity to take a peek into the life of a self−performing subcontractor.

Problem Details Your company is invited to submit a proposal for the Concrete Package of a multi-story facility in the heart of a vibrant Midwest city’s revitalization. The Concrete Package consists of structural concrete elements, as well as non-structural scope items, including but not limited to: cores, slabs, walls, and exterior concrete. This project consists of repurposing an existing structure and adding usable square footage. This project will require the utmost attention to detail, safety, quality, as well as a creative approach to constructability.

Lithko Contracting was selected to perform the Concrete Package for this project. We are looking for a local company to subcontract the scope, as described above. Your company will perform on Lithko’s behalf and must therefore execute the work in accordance with our standards. Before awarding the Concrete Package to a subcontractor, we will conduct post-bid interviews to ensure we are selecting the right partner for this keystone project.

Listed below are some items to review which will help prepare for the competition: The competition teams are expected to: o Provide constructability reviews o Perform a quantitative takeoff o Develop a basic estimate o Develop a construction pour sequence schedule o Recognize safety concerns by developing a detailed site and task specific safety plan o Recognize and address project and specification items o Analyze forming systems, equipment, and concrete delivery systems to determine which best fits the project scope items. *This competition is NOT a preconstruction exercise, but rather a competition focused on constructability and creative problem solving.

Deliverables that are expected from the teams are as follows: o Statement of Qualifications to include the following items:  Student résumés  Organization chart, citing specific roles and responsibilities of each position  Project approach We will distribute a detailed Request for Qualifications one week before competition.

This will allow for sufficient time to prepare your statements prior to the competition. o Takeoff estimate sheets (these may be collected upon request) o Written proposal (completion of the provided bid form), including any clarifications or specific exclusions o Construction pour sequence schedule for validation and feedback of provided project schedule (these will not be collected, but will be part of the Post Bid Interview discussion) o Post Bid Interview (teams may include a brief presentation, but this is primarily a round table discussion) Scoring criteria will include evaluation of the Statement of Qualifications, Proposal, and Post Bid Interview. Bonus points will be awarded for identifying and providing a creative solution to the “Concrete Solution”. A final break down of scoring will be presented at the competition.

Other Notable Items •

Participation in this competition is limited to the eight teams, determined on a first come, first serve basis.

All submissions will be electronic this year. We will provide the project drawings both electronically and one (1) printed half-sized set per team.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place finishing teams.

•

Conference Schedule The following is the basic schedule of events, detailed schedules for both competition and faculty events will be distributed to all persons registered approximately one week before the conference begins: Wednesday, October 19, 2022 • Registration, Career Fair, and Opening Ceremonies Thursday, October 20, 2022 • Document Distribution, Overview 7:00am • Pre-bid 9:00am • Lithko will hold “Drop In” hours (come visit our Work Room!)

• Lithko will make “Team Visits” to engage with individual teams • Addenda will be issued based upon questions raised at Pre-Bid and throughout the day.

Final RFIs must be submitted NO LATER THAN 8:00pm CST. • All proposals must be submitted prior to midnight (11:59pm CST) Friday, October 21, 2022 • Post Bid Interviews – schedule to be posted after submission of proposals • Debrief will be held upon completion of the Interviews, time TBD Saturday, October 22, 2022 • Awards Ceremony “Concrete Solutions” has been integrated into the ASC competition to allow you to have an opportunity to experience the world of subcontracting and self-perform concrete. We believe that this problem will challenge you to think in detail about what it takes to win and build a job in this extremely competitive market.
