Introduction Lithko Contracting, LLC is proud to sponsor the 2020 “Concrete Solutions” ASC Student Competition problem. Welcome and thank you for your participation.

Concrete has been a leading building material for over 2,000 years. Every project involves the use of concrete in some way, and for some projects concrete is the main building material. Modern ready-mixed concrete also provides remarkable flexibility in meeting the needs of challenging design and sustainability considerations.

The ASC Competition does an excellent job in providing an environment for the competitors to experience life in the construction world. In participating in the Concrete Solutions Competition, you will have the opportunity to take a peek into the life of a self−performing subcontractor.

This competition offers an outstanding opportunity for your career development. It allows you to showcase your talents, become a leader, and network with potential employers and construction recruiters. Congratulations on making the decision to compete!

Problem Details Your company is invited to submit a proposal for the Concrete Package of a unique manufacturing facility in the Midwest. This facility will also house the corporate headquarters for the brand. The Concrete Package consists of structural concrete elements related to a multi-story production tower, as well as non-structural scope items, including but not limited to: foundations, slabs, walls, topping slabs, dock pits and exterior concrete. Due to the quality requirements of the product intended for manufacture at this facility, quality control will be key to successful execution; tolerances are very tight for both fit and finish. The final design incorporates some unique elements and challenging concrete construction details. This project will require the utmost attention to detail, safety, quality, as well as a creative approach to constructability.

Lithko Contracting, LLC was selected to perform the Concrete Package for this project. We are looking for a local company to subcontract the scope, as described above. Your company will perform on Lithko’s behalf and must therefore execute the work in accordance with our standards. Before awarding the Concrete Package to a subcontractor, we will conduct post-bid interviews to ensure we are selecting the right partner for this keystone project.

Listed below are some items to review which will help prepare for the competition: The competition teams are expected to: o Provide constructability reviews o Perform a quantitative takeoff o Develop a detailed estimate o Develop a construction pour sequence schedule o Recognize safety concerns by developing a detailed site and task specific safety plan o Recognize and address project and ACI specification items o Analyze forming systems, equipment, and concrete delivery systems to determine which best fits the project scope items.

Deliverables that are expected from the teams are as follows: o Statement of Qualifications to include the following items:  Student résumés  Organization chart, citing specific roles and responsibilities of each position  Project approach We will distribute a detailed request for qualifications at a later date to the competing teams. Distribution date will allow for sufficient time to prepare your statements prior to the competition. o Takeoff estimate sheets (these may be collected upon request) o Written proposal (completion of the provided bid form), including any clarifications or specific exclusions o Construction pour sequence schedule for validation and feedback of provided project schedule (these will not be collected, but will be part of the Post Bid Interview discussion) o Post Bid Interview (teams may include a brief presentation, but this is primarily a round table discussion) Scoring criteria will include evaluation of the Statement of Qualifications, Proposal, and Post Bid Interview. Bonus points will be awarded for identifying and providing a creative solution to the “Concrete Solution”. A final break down of scoring will be presented at the competition.

Other Notable Items Participation in this competition is limited to the ten teams, determined on a first come, first serve basis.

Competing teams will have access to the internet at their team’s discretion and cost, but service speed is very limited at the facility due to the high number of users during the event.

Please note that points will be deducted for submitting deliverables past the stated due dates/times, at the discretion of Lithko.

Lithko will provide white board, projector, screen, and laptop for presentations.

Teams will be required to print documents for submission during the competition.

Team Rooms will be visited by the judges periodically on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

Initial problem documents will be distributed via flash drive. One half-sized set of drawings will be provided to each team. A full-size set will be available for review in Lithko’s Workroom.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place finishing teams.

Conference Schedule The following is the basic schedule of events, detailed schedules for both competition and faculty events will be distributed to all persons registered approximately one week before the conference begins: Wednesday October 14, 2020 • Team and Faculty Registration - 3PM - 7PM • Career Fair - 4PM - 8PM (snack food provided) • Lithko will be holding on-site interviews • Welcome Session and Orientation - 8PM - 9PM Thursday October 15, 2020 • RFP's distributed for all problems - 7AM • PreBid Meeting – 9AM • Competition Submissions Due - 11PM Friday October 16, 2020 • Post Bid Interviews (Panel Judging) - 8AM - 6PM • Debrief by Lithko Team – 6:30PM Saturday October 17, 2020 • Awards Banquet and Breakfast - 8AM - 10AM • Conference Closes - 10AM “Concrete Solutions” has been integrated into the ASC competition to allow you to have an opportunity to experience the world of subcontracting and or self-perform concrete. We believe that this problem will challenge you to think in detail about what it takes to win and build a job in this extremely competitive market.
