2018 Electrical Problem Statement

Mission:

We have selected a project that encompasses multiple aspects of electrical construction for the 2018 ASC Region 3 Student Competition.

We hope that this year’s problem will help to prepare you for your future.

Building America’s infrastructure to improve quality of life.

This competition is a chance to introduce you to a day in the life of a Project Manager. We hope to challenge your teams ability to leverage academic knowledge, intuition, problem solving skills, and the ability to have fun in a pressured environment. We appreciate that each of you are dedicating a great deal of time and effort by participating in our electrical competition.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The 2018 problem will be a Bid-Build Bridge project located on the border of Iowa and Illinois.

Currently the project is in it’s early stages. The bridge is scheduled for completion in 2020 before the removal of the existing Bridge in 2021.

This project will feature dual basket-handle arch bridges with main channel spans of 800 feet. The electrical scope for the approach and bridge contracts include the street, navigation, and LED aesthetic lighting between the shores of Iowa and Illinois. You will be responsible for all conduit duct packages attached below the approach and bridge decks for arch power, future ITS systems, and private utilities.

STUDENT ROLES: You all will be assuming the roles of a project team. We understand that a project team generally would not consist of 6 members, but in spirit of the problem, teams may feel free to delegate roles as they wish. Specific responsibilities and titles can be determined by the student teams, however, here are some guidelines and recommended roles to use and choose from: 
