Associated Schools of Construction Great Lakes Region (Region #3) 2019 Project Solutions (open) Initial Problem Statement The 2019 ASC Region #3 Project Solutions competition will encompass multiple aspects of a large precast concrete stormwater pump station project. Any and all proposals are to be prepared in accordance with specific criteria that will be distributed at the pre-bid meeting on Thursday October 17, 2019 at 7:00 am. Overview NPCA, on behalf of the state DOT, intends to procure a qualified contractor to provide services including cost estimating and installation of a precast concrete pump station. This project includes excavation, the pick-up and transport of all precast pieces, on-site assembly, and backfill. Problem Description Climate change has impacted the effectiveness of underground infrastructure designed to only rarely withstand large weather events. Many large, strong tropical storms have made US landfall since the turn of the century. Rain events overall have increased in frequency and intensity, overflowing rivers and taxing stormwater systems that struggle to keep up. On the east coast, a new stormwater pump station was proposed to handle road drainage and the community drainage of 11 towns. The project was originally designed as a cast-in-place concrete application; however, due to site constraints and other factors, the DOT is interested in looking at a precast option. The size of the precast pieces would be large and may present logistical challenges your team is tasked with solving. Student Roles Students will be assuming roles of a project team consisting of: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

This is a big project. Teamwork will be critical to solving budget issues, transport challenges, safety concerns and more. You will justify the use of precast over cast-in-place concrete, ensure proper transport to the jobsite at the proper time of day, ensure a quality assembly at the jobsite and make a plan to ensure zero injuries throughout the project. Contact Information Prior to October 16, 2019, any questions can be directed to Alex Morales, amorales@precast.org, but no further project specifics will be provided until the pre-bid meeting
