As I walked into the house, she looked at me with an evil look on her face. Hair straightened but kind of messy. I said, “Can you help me, please?!” She said, “Get out and don’t come back. Look at you. You’re black—ugly just like your father. You’ll never amount to nothing. I wish you were never born. I hate you, you wimp. Get out and don’t come back.”

FAMILY

It’s always good to be with family through hard times and good times. Laugh together, cry together. Rejoice together. Family functions: taking pictures, laughing, dancing, kids running, talking about old times. Yes, family, it’s always good to keep in touch.

WORDS CAN HURT YOU

They say sticks and stones can break your bones, but my Mother and Grandmother hurt me. They said things that in my wildest dreams I never thought would be said to me. Things I couldn’t believe. Was it true? Did I really want to believe it? No! I did not. But most of it did come true. They abandoned me.
