Jack of All Trades This month, our Facility Team has shown their versatility and truly embodying the title of “Jacks of All Trades.” From the multiple office moves, to handling the pickup and storage of our new Outreach vehicle, to the remodel of the “White House” at HOST, their hard work has been instrumental in keeping our organization running smoothly.

Community Partner Spotlight Over the past 5 years, we have partnered with OHSU Casey Eye Institute to provide comprehensive eye vision exams and prescription glasses at no cost to our patients. They typically visit twice a year, once in Monmouth and the other in West Salem. This has been enormously beneficial to our patients, especially those who lack health insurance or are underserved, such as those on Medicare and private insurance, which often do not cover routine eye exams.

Furthermore, OHSU Casey has trained some of our CHWs on Vision Navigation, teaching them how to perform basic vision screenings and providing knowledge about vision resources. Additionally, OHSU has provided our agency with Vision Vouchers for those who cannot access vision care through the Casey Eye Institute or regular eye care clinics. Outreach Team Vehicle NWHS expands homeless services with new mobile outreach van Date: Feb.7, 2024 This is a copy of the press release that was sent out to the community. If you have any questions or comments please contact Stephen Goins, SGoins@nwhumanservices.org (SALEM, OR) - A new mobile outreach van will help Northwest Human Services (NWHS) in their efforts to provide health services to Salem’s unhoused and medically fragile community members. The van, which was purchased using grants funds from the City of Salem and the Willamette Health Council, features increased storage capacity for supplies, a medical exam bed and a more private space in which to provide care. “Our outreach team has been visiting encampments, parks and other areas of Salem where unhoused individuals congregate for years to provide onsite nursing care and offer resources. We’ve found ways to make it work in the past, but having a well-equipped vehicle to support those efforts will expand the range of care and offer a safe and clean environment in which to do that.”, said Stephen Goins, Chief Operations Officer for NWHS.

The NWHS Outreach Team, which includes a rotating staff of nurses and community health workers, will use the van to travel to different sites to treat minor injuries, offer medical advice, resources and referrals, and make recommendations for follow up care. This outreach model plays a critical role in providing health assessments and mental health assistance and referrals, which reduces overuse of emergency systems, prevent untreated conditions from worsening and prevent avoidable and untimely deaths.

The model also provides an opportunity to connect people with other resources such as transportation options for accessing healthcare, housing and shelter contacts and help applying for the Oregon Health Plan (OHP). The NWHS Outreach Team also distributes snacks, seasonal supplies, first aid kits, hygiene kits, and clothing to the people they visit.

“It can be incredibly challenging for those living outdoors, particularly those with mobility issues and unmanaged health conditions, to connect with health care and other essential services. Having a dedicated van and staff to ensure that happens is a significant step forward in our efforts to provide health and social supports to anyone who needs it.”

Health & Wellness 2024 by: Kristin Kuenz-Barber In the constant hustle and bustle of modern life, it‘s easy to overlook the most critical aspect of our existence: our own well-being. When was the last time you genuinely paused to evaluate how you‘re truly doing? Are you giving yourself the care and attention you need with the whirlwind of daily tasks and obligations?

Living in a society that always seems to be on the move, always adapting and evolving, it becomes increasingly essential to carve out moments for self-reflection. Consider the decisions you make each day: Are you consciously nurturing your body with wholesome habits such as regular exercise and a balanced diet? TWC | OMSI TRIP

lients of Together We Can (TWC) recently had an exciting trip to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), made possible by your generous donations of cans and bottles to the program. This trip not only provided them with a memorable experience but also underscored the significance of the Together We Can program in fostering job skills.

It was their first time exploring OMSI, and the clients were filled with excitement as they embraced the opportunity to learn and grow. Throughout the day, they immersed themselves in science and technology, engaging with interactive displays and enjoying an IMAX movie. Accompanied by TWC staff, they navigated the museum, sharing moments of fun and learning.

This adventure not only showcased the power of community support but also highlighted the valuable skills and rewards that the THW program offers. Through experiences like these, clients not only have fun but also develop important job skills and learn the satisfaction that comes with hard work and contribution to the community.

NWHS Recent Workshops Youth Mental Health First Aid Training: On Thursday, February 15th, a group of 18 dedicated NWHS employees gathered in the HOST Resource Center for an educational workshop – Youth Mental Health First Aid training. This initiative reflects our commitment not only to the well-being of our community but also to the invaluable resource our employees represent in supporting youth mental health.

So, what exactly is Youth Mental Health First Aid? It‘s a nationally recognized program designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in young people. Much like traditional first aid training teaches us to address physical health emergencies, Youth Mental Health First Aid empowers participants to provide initial support until appropriate professional help is received or until the crisis is resolved.

Why is it so important for our employees to undergo this training? The answer lies in the critical role we play as a support system for our youth and young adults. By

providing our employees with the tools and knowledge offered through Youth Mental Health First Aid, we‘re not just checking off a box – we‘re actively investing in the well-being of our youth and fostering a culture of care and understanding within our organization.

Through increased awareness and empathy, we can create safer and more supportive environments where young people feel seen, heard, and supported.

CHWs Collaboration:

In February 2023, I reached out to Erica Chavez, MA, Fostering Hope Initiative- Program Director thanks to Kristin‘s networking efforts. Our aim was to create a CHW employees and potential partnerships, by providing a quarterly meetings with varied clinic and community viewpoints to nurture a Learning Community for CHWs. With NWHS Leadership‘s backing, we formed a planning committee consisting of Memo Plazas, Kristin Kuenz-Barber, Maureen Casey, Jill Sorensen, Chris Babrber, and Erica Chavez.

Our first meeting in May 2023 drew considerable interest, fueling more insterest and leading to our upcoming 1-year anniversary celebration. CHWs drive discussion topics and learning opportunities, while the planning committee—Memo, Kristin, Maureen, Jill, Chris, and Erica—gather feedback to facilitate learning environments.

The recent meeting on February 7th broke records with over 30 community health workers in attendance! The overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants speaks volumes about the value of the CHW Collaboration. It provides a supportive space for CHWs to exchange experiences, resources, and insights from their expertise.

Most importantly, it fosters camaraderie, empowering participants to help face challenges more effectively and deliver improved care to those they serve.

As we reflect on the journey of the past year, let us celebrate the achievements of the CHW Collaboration and the collective efforts of all those involved!

As we concluded our February gathering with the quote “When you dream alone, it remains just a dream, when you dream together, it is the beginning of a new reality,“ the CHW Collaboration has become a vital platform for CHWs across Marion and Polk county and settings to connect, share ideas, and collectively impact their communities.

Slips, Trips, and Falls. Oh My! Prevention tips for Wintery Weather

The Groundhog may have predicted an early Spring for 2024, but in the Pacific Northwest, it seems like the weather has a mind of its own. February is a month that in the Willamette Valley, historically has more wintery weather with Ice, Sleet, and Snowstorms to match that of the Northeast parts of the United States.

The risk of slipping, tripping, and even falling is dramatically increased during these wintery weather events. One can never be too prepared for the odd weather patterns that the Pacific Northwest is sure to experience. So don’t let Old Man Winter get the best of you this year or years thereafter.

Stats and Facts that are a real trip: • February 1st is the exact halfway point between the first

day of Winter (Winter Solstice: December 20th, 21st, or 22nd depending on the year) and the first day of Spring (Spring Equinox: Mar 19th, 20th, or 21st depending on the year) in the Northern Hemisphere.

From 2018 through 2023, only in 2020 did it not significantly have wintery weather conditions like ice or snowstorms that impacted business operations or travel in Salem.

On March 2, 2019, the Statesman Journal reported that February of 2019 was the seventh-coldest February on record for Salem, and it also happened to be the coldest overall since 1989, with the average temperature being 38.4 degrees, and eight of those days had snowfall.

Fall for these habits: • Wipe your feet well on a mat prior to continuing to your

destination when coming inside if your shoes are wet or have some tracked snow on the soles. Wet shoe soles increase your slipping and falling chances and leave patches of water on the floor posing a slipping hazard to others.

If you see small puddles on the laminate floors, clean them up with paper towels to prevent future slips by you or your coworkers. Prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

If you see a potential slip, trip, or fall hazard, take care of it yourself or report it immediately to your supervisor or nearest Leadership individual.

Wear slip-resistant footwear for some extra traction and take slow, small steps. Maintaining your balance on an un-sturdy surface reduces your risk of falling if you slip.

It’s a slippery slope with these: • Don’t rush on slick surfaces both inside and outside. Your •

safety and well-being are more important than anything else.

Avoid carrying anything that blocks your view of the ground in front and below you. Obstructing your view prevents you from foreseeing trip or slip hazards ahead of time, thus increasing your chances and risk of slipping and falling.

If you slip and fall, remember not to use your hands and arms to break your fall. You risk causing a “traumatic injury” that ranges from minor bruises, cuts, and abrasions to more serious bone fractures, damage to your spinal cord, and traumatic brain injuries like a concussion.

She recently completed her Human Resources Management Certification from Linfield College. Her role has expanded in credentialing, recruitment, and the supervision of WSC team members, Nicole brings not only expertise but also a spirit NWHS to her new role. Now located on the second floor at WSC with Nicole are Mayra Gutierrez and Lupita Jimenez Delgado. Mayra, our Human Resources Analyst, specializes in guiding employees through the complexities of Family Medical Leave and the Oregon Family Medical Leave Act. Her unwavering support provides a lifeline to those facing tough times, ensuring they receive the care and assistance they deserve.

Karon has been a loyal member of the NWHS family for an impressive 22 years and continues to exemplify dedication and excellence in her role.

At the forefront of general HR inquiries stands Sara Baltazar Medina, our Lead HR Specialist. With expertise and unwavering dedication, Sara serves as a pillar of support for our entire organization. Her commitment to open communication is empowering our employees to thrive. Sara is instrumental in the onboarding process for our new hires.

Completing our exceptional team is Sara Suttle, stationed at the front desk of Admin, where she warmly welcomes everyone that walks through the doors with a huge smile. Sara coordiantes all of the volunteers, students, and job shadows.

We understand the importance of accessibility and support in HR, which is why Deb McCurry, our HR Director, makes herself available at the West Salem Clinic every Thursday for appointments. This accessibility ensures that our employees can easily connect with HR leadership when needed.
