I am very pleased to introduce the Ascham Institute of Learning to all parents in our community. We know that, as parents, you are always considering how best to support your daughters and help them to be confident, capable and resilient. Our girls, from early childhood through to the teen years, now live in a world that looks vastly different to the one inhabited by their parents at the same age. The Institute will provide a forum where we can navigate and talk about issues that you should be aware of in a rapidly changing world. We will gather speakers who are experts in their fields, and who can share the latest thinking about raising girls. Our speakers will cover the very topics that young people are engaging with, and sometimes grappling with, and these speakers will bring with them a depth of knowledge on how to approach those issues. Furthermore, we will be looking ahead so that you can be prepared to deal with future issues that your daughter may face.

Ms Susan McLean is Australia’s foremost expert in the area of cybersafety and young people, and was a member of Victoria Police for 27 years. Widely known as the ‘cyber cop’ she was the first Victoria Police Officer appointed to a position involving cybersafety and young people. Ms McLean is a passionate advocate for child safety online and has established working relationships with most of the key players in the online world who value her extensive knowledge, balanced commentary and commitment.

To be successful in this endeavour I encourage you to participate actively by attending the upcoming sessions we have planned. The Ascham Institute of Learning will enable parents, girls and the School to share a common language around subject areas that will affect all of us. Please let us know how we can help you and support you by giving us ideas on topics for future talks. I look forward to welcoming you to our first forum led by Dr Judith Locke.
Dr Locke’s presentation will explain modern, well-intended parenting trends and the impact on children. Most importantly, the talk will offer practical strategies to help your daughter become confident, capable and resilient.

Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist, former teacher and school counsellor who specialises in parenting and child wellbeing. As a clinician, she provides psychological counselling to children, adolescents, parents and families. As a trainer, she provides psychological training sessions in parenting, resilience, staff wellbeing and related fields to parents and staff in schools, childcare centres, and government and community organisations, as well as private companies.

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is one of Australia’s highest profile psychologists. He has written 10 books including the recently rewritten bestselling Princess Bitchface Syndrome 2.0. Dr Carr-Gregg has been the resident parenting expert on Channel 7’s Sunrise for over 10 years, as well as co-hosting Australia’s first-ever commercial radio show dedicated to psychology called Good Thinking, with fellow psychologist Sabina Reid, on 2UE. He is also the program psychologist for The Morning Show with Neil Mitchell on Radio 3AW.
