Development of an IGS multi-breed heifer pregnancy EPD and understanding the genetics of methane production are the two projects funded by the 2020 Walton –Berry Graduate Student Support Grants.

Drs. Scott Speidel, R. Mark Enns, and Milt Thomas with their Ph.D. student, Lane Giess at Colorado State University will use the funding to support developing a multi-breed Heifer Pregnancy EPD, a long-held priority for the IGS genetic evaluation. In addition to the model development, guidelines for the standardized collection of data will be presented to the IGS-partner breed organizations. This research plans to provide a more thorough understanding of the genetic control of heifer pregnancy, contributions of heterosis, genomic markers, and genetic correlations of heifer pregnancy to other traits.

Dr. Megan Rolf and her M.S. student, Andrew Lakamp, at Kansas State University will use the funding to support their research into the genetic control of methane production in beef cattle including estimating variance components and heritabilities of methane production, genetic correlation of methane production and other economically relevant traits, and identification of genomic markers related to methane production.

The Walton–Berry Graduate Student Support Grant, originally started by Jim Berry of Wildberry Farms, honors Dr. Bob Walton’s lifelong efforts in animal breeding and raising Simmental cattle.

This grant aims to help train future animal breeders and advance our knowledge of applied livestock genetics offering up to two grants per year. ◆ Jim Berry (left) and Bob Walton, founders of the graduate student support grants.

2013 – Drs. Jennifer Bormann, Bob Weaber, Dan Moser, and Mike MacNeil from Kansas State University. Funds used to support graduate student stipend and living expenses for a collaborative research project in quantitative and molecular genetics in beef cattle at the US Meat Animal Research Center.

Funds used to study the genetics and objective measurements of temperament in beef cattle.

Needless to say, 2020 is not turning out like anyone expected. I keep seeing the meme that hopes this year is like a mullet and we can party in the back half, but I think maybe that’s turning into wishful thinking as well. If you’re a researcher who studies how people manage adversity, what a goldmine you rendecott@simmgene.com have in front of you now!

Those of us involved in the agriculture business probably have more practice in managing adversity than some of our peers, although we may be better prepared for livestock and crop pandemics rather than the human type!

I hope the greater public appreciation and understanding of where food comes from that has grown during this uncertain time continues after we return to whatever normal is going to be. Certainly, there are a lot of unique opportunities for those who are willing to lead and take some risks. When everyone else is pulling back, it’s sometimes hard to keep your foot on the gas pedal, but if you change nothing, nothing will change.

Former Board Chairman Passes Bob Schalles 1935-2020 Dr. Robert Schalles was many things to many people. He was an educator, mentor, animal scientist, cattle breeder, leader, husband, father, and loyal friend. On June 19, at the age of 85, he passed away at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice in Manhattan, Kansas.

Born in Durango, Colorado, Schalles graduated from Ignacio High School before joining the US Navy, serving from 1954-58 with the Pacific Submarine Fleet. Following his military hitch, he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University, then matriculated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute to obtain both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Subsequently, he served 32 years as a professor of Genetics in Animal Science and Industry at Kansas State University (KSU), before retiring in 1998.

His expertise in population and quantitative genetics coupled with beef cattle management enabled him to contribute significantly to the animal breeding, genetics, teaching, and research programs at KSU. He is also credited with the development of an innovative and practical research focus relevant to the needs of the US beef cattle industry.

Schalles served on the graduate committee for fellow KSU professor, Dr. Michael Dikeman, and the two remained fast friends for more than 40 years. “Bob always focused on the role of genetics in practical, real-world beef cattle production,” Dikeman said. “Among many major accomplishments, he helped establish the Kansas Bull Test, ran a ground-breaking research project on feed efficiency and authored a booklet titled Genetics of Coat Color in Cattle, that was extremely important since Simmental cattle were being discriminated against because of the diluter gene.”

In 1993, he was elected to the ASA board for the first of two three-year terms, including a year as Chairman in 1997-98. In 1999, he was honored with ASA’s highest honor, the Golden Book Award.

Former ASA CEO Dr. Jerry Lipsey admired Schalles’ instincts with regard to data collection and animal breeding. “When ASA started our Carcass Merit Program, I wanted to test the “hot” bulls but Bob, who was on our board at the time, insisted that we test the “legacy” bulls instead — and he was right!” he said.

“He had an innate ability for collecting, understanding and evaluating beef cattle data,” Lipsey continued. “As a student at Virginia Tech, he was among the first there to use the main campus computer for analyzing data.”

Former Trustee Willie Altenburg concurred with Dikeman and Lipsey.

“Dr. Schalles was a leading geneticist during the Simmental transition period that included polled; scurred; color, including black, red, diluter/rat tail; plus the inheritance of spotting, stripes, and white on the face and back feet.

It was a complex mix of traits, but he understood it and could explain it in a way that even this simple cowboy could understand,” he recalled.

In 1956 Schalles married Betty Sewell who passed away in 1996. In 2000, he married Daisy Fielder, an administrative assistant in the KSU Animal Sciences and Industry Department.

In 1993, Schalles was elected to the ASA board for the first of two threeyear terms, including a year as Chairman in the 1997-98. In 1999, he was honored with ASA’s highest honor, the Golden Book Award.

In addition to Daisy, his wife of 20 years, Schalles is survived by four children: Philip (Leanne), Larry (Susanne), Karen, and Glen; a brother, Harold; three stepchildren: Mark (Jill) Fielder; Lisa (Kendall) Lynn; and Jana (Brian) Grimm. Also remembering Bob are 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. A brother, John, preceded Bob in death.

“Dr. Bob was instrumental in the way Simmental changed in the '90's, all while being one of the most pleasant and patient board members I knew,” Altenburg added “Bob was a fabulous professor and friend. I’ll never forget him,” Lipsey concluded.

“He was a very good friend,” Dikeman offered. “You always knew where Bob stood, either from a beef production standpoint or as a personal friend.

He was a great supporter of Simmental cattle and the American Simmental Association.” ◆

By Lilly Platts Editor’s Note: The Women of ASA is a series of articles highlighting significant contributions of women in the Simmental community.

From teaching to raising her family, beef cattle are at the center of Dr. Keela Trennepohl’s life.

Keela Trennepohl Ph.D. Keela Trennepohl grew up in the beef industry on an Angus seedstock operation in Southwest Wisconsin owned by her parents, Kevin and Keri Retallick. “My sisters and I were very involved with all aspects of the operation and were fortunate to show locally as well as nationally, and that was how it all began.”

She enrolled in college despite wanting to stay on the farm and raise cattle. “I would say that my life hasn’t gone according to plan, but cattle have always been my constant. Cattle encompass all facets of my life. I wanted to stay home and raise cattle, but was challenged by my parents to try it for a semester. My ‘never quit’ mentality has me still going to college today.”

She initially had her Keela Trennepohl with her daughter, heart set on going to Maroska, and husband, Chris. veterinary school after receiving her degree in animal science from University of Wisconsin-Madison, but after 12 denial letters and $2,000 in application fees she accepted that it wasn’t in the cards.

“I didn’t know what grad school was, but Dr. Dan Shaefer recommended it. My resume ended up with Dr. Dan Faulkner at the University of Illinois. It was on his desk when his colleague, Dr. Doug Parrett, saw it and recognized my name from showing cattle. What a valuable lesson for young exhibitors — work hard and represent yourself in an upstanding manner even if you don’t win the big banner, you never know who you’re impressing along the way.”

Last minute, Trennepohl was accepted into graduate school and became her advisor's last student at the University of Illinois and his first female student. At the University of Illinois, the Simmental breed became a part of her life, as well as ASA. “It was then that I became immersed in Simmental cattle, because ASA funded some important research projects.

The University of Illinois was also a part of the Carcass Merit Program, and that was when I really started to see what these Simmental bulls could do with the commercial cows we were utilizing. I recognized and understood the potential that existed in this breed.”

After realizing how much she enjoyed her studies, she decided to stay on for a Ph.D. program. Simmental, Angus, and commercial cattle were at the heart of her studies. During this same time, she met her now-husband, Chris, who always valued and had a passion for Simmental cattle, which led Trennepohl to become even more interested. She intended to get a job in industry but ended up in academia. After passing on the opportunity once, she applied for a position at Cal Poly, in San Luis Obispo, California. “I got the call that I got the job while exhibiting cattle at NAILE, and I still wasn’t sure I wanted to go. Cal Poly was a long way from everything I knew. It was a

subtle push from a friend, Nick Reimann, that convinced me to give it a go. I started teaching, and that is when I realized that despite my plan, I was meant to be a teacher.”

California not only offered Trennepohl a different perspective on ranching, with brandings and western culture, but she also learned how to interact with people who didn’t grow up in the industry. “The students were exactly what I needed.

Most were urban students who wanted to go to vet school.

Many had little to no farm or ranch experience, so I had to learn how to teach the beef industry to people who didn’t know anything about it, or maybe even had a negative opinion about it. I had to learn how to teach in a way that was inclusive to everyone. I became aware of some of my hidden biases and vowed to keep improving.”

She spent five growth-filled years in California, before returning to Illinois, and now teaches at Western Illinois University (WIU), where she is an assistant professor and director of the bull test station and cow herd. Today, her students primarily come from agricultural backgrounds, allowing her to bring insight from her experiences in California and provide a new perspective. Trennepohl, alongside her students, is transitioning WIU’s 50-head cow herd to Simmental.

“Involving and relating to students helps me to gain their trust and respect, allowing both parties to constantly learn from one another. This is key in educating students.”

Keela and her husband, Chris, are also building their family’s operation, True North Cattle. “Starting our own operation hasn’t been easy, but we continue to learn how to prioritize our time and money, because if you don’t allocate these two things, I promise you they will go somewhere.

You have to be strategic with your resources because they are precious — especially time.”

They have two young daughters, Maroska and Kort. True North Cattle will be having their first online sale on September 23, 2020. Quality cattle, customer service, and education are their foundation. “We want anyone who comes to us to feel part of the TRU family and ask questions without judgement. We promote positivity without ignoring reality — giving compliments while pointing out ways we can improve together.” Authenticity, integrity and trust, kindness, and passion fuel their philosophy as cattle breeders.

“We are standing together as our own entity fulfilling our dreams together with the aspiration of encouraging others’ dreams along the way.”

In everything she does, spreading a message of positivity and encouragement is at the forefront. She loves to teach and to learn. “I have to keep growing as a person, because if you’re not growing, you’re dying. Personal growth and a strong faith like I have now is something I used to really scoff at, but I have realized I need to care for myself: mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. That’s what I want to tell anyone in the cattle industry who will listen, is to take a breath, and re-align your focus with why you started all of this in the first place. I always come back to cattle. I love this breed and what it represents. The people are amazing, and it’s the breed our children will be involved with. I want quality cattle, I want to raise my children this way, and I want to be an example of how to really live truly and freely as yourself.” ◆

Chance Ujazdowski reflects on the 40th Anniversary National Classic

The day after the National Classic. It’s always one of the saddest days of my year.

The banners have been awarded, the barns are empty, the work is done, and my friends are headed home.

This year has been an especially difficult one. With only 56 days to plan and constant curve balls thrown our way, we pulled off one of the largest AJSA National Classics ever. 729 cattle entries and 463 contestants checked in from 31 states and one Canadian province. And you know what? We absolutely rocked it. Nobody will convince me otherwise.

Like I said on stage: It was very important for us to have this event. And not “because of the times,” but because of the youth and because of the great Simmental breed. Thank you all for being there, for being a part of this record-setting, “who knew if we were going to have it” event.

It’s been amazing. It’s been a lot of work.

But I could not be happier to have done it.

So thank you.

Seventeen outstanding junior members have been named to receive the American Simmental Association’s (ASA’s) prestigious Gold and Silver Merit awards. The winners were announced during the 2020 National Classic Awards banquet on July 16, 2020, in Brookings, South Dakota.

Five Gold award winners were named to receive scholarship stipends in the amount of $3,000 each, while 12 Silver awards, worth $2,000 each, were also awarded. The total value of the combined Merit Award scholarships is $27,000, funded through direct support from the American SimmentalSimbrah Foundation.

All awards are required to be used for postsecondary educational purposes.

Whitney Olson, Alexandria, MN, is the daughter of Nick and Michaela Olson. This past December, she finished her third and last semester of graduate school at North Dakota State University where she obtained her Masters in Business Administration. She is currently employed by Hurley & Associates with the goal of becoming a broker. She is a seven-year member of the AJSA and the Minnesota Junior Simmental Association.

Gold Clay Sundberg, Arlington, IL, is the son of Kenneth and Staci Sundberg. As the 2019-2020 President of the AJSA Board of Trustees, he has served three years on the Board while being an active AJSA and Illinois Junior Simmental Association member for the last 10 years. He will be attending South Dakota State University this fall where he plans to major in Animal Science with an industry focus. While at SDSU, he will be a member of the livestock judging team.

Gold Cara Smith, Pleasant Garden, NC, daughter of Craig and Elaine Smith, is currently a junior at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She plans to graduate in December 2021 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition with a concentration in wellness. Cara has actively been involved in the AJSA and North Carolina Junior Simmental Association for six years and is also serving as Eastern Region Board Trustee.

Gold Kennedy Early, Leeton, MO, is the daughter of Howard and Cheryl Early. She is currently attending Kansas State University, majoring in Animal Sciences and Industries with a production and ranch management option. She is on track to graduate in two and a half years and plans to enroll in the Ruminant Nutrition Master’s program at K-State. Kennedy has been actively involved in the AJSA and Missouri Junior Simmental Association for 12 years and currently serves as a South Central Region Board Trustee.

Gold Lauren Glick, La Prairie, IL, daughter of Lane and Christy Glick, will be a junior this fall attending Oklahoma State University majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in Biotechnology. She plans to attend a graduate program to become a certified animal embryologist lab technician and open a chiropractic lab. Lauren has been an active AJSA member and a member of the Illinois Junior Simmental Association (IJSA) for 11 years. She is currently the IJSA Vice President.

2021 AJSA Steer Profitability Competition The AJSA Steer Profitability Competition (SPC) is designed to provide junior members meaningful exposure to the opportunities and challenges associated with cattle feeding. The SPC will not only allow participants to measure and compare the profitability of their own animal(s), but of greater importance, it will introduce young beef enthusiasts to peers, mentors, industry advocates, and experiences that are exceedingly difficult to acquire for any beef producer. Participants in the SPC program will be powerful voices as they transition from junior membership to adult participation within the beef industry.

“Embryo Transfer and AI work is an opportunity to accelerate your genetic progress,” says Dr. Kory Bigalk, veterinarian and long-time advocate of Simmental genetics.

“With the advent of IVF, and other technologies, it allows the beef and dairy industries more opportunity to produce better cattle faster.”

For as long as he remembers, Bigalk has been in the Simmental business. His father started breeding Simmental in the mid-seventies with the guidance of a family friend, Dr. Lynn Aggen, Oak Meadow Farms. After his father passed away and the family farm sold, Bigalk continued the partnership with the Aggens.

Bigalk attended the University of Minnesota studying veterinary medicine. While in veterinary practice, he met his wife, Kareen.

“Even before we got married, we agreed that eventually we’d like to own our own farm and raise our children in that environment,” he explains.

Today, Bigalk owns and operates a growing 40-head Simmental operation and diversified donor facility northeast of Rochester, Minnesota, called Diamond K Genetics. From the embryo transfer services to the annual bull sale, Bigalk focuses on improving the customer’s bottom line by helping maximize the genetic potential in their herd. “Within my herd, we collect as much data and do as much genomic testing as possible. For dairy and beef clients, we provide a full line of professional embryo transfer services.”

Building the Donor Business

After completing his veterinarian degree, Bigalk worked in a large animal practice for 12 years while doing embryo transfer (ET) work on the side. Ten years ago, he left general practice and purchased a retiring veterinarian’s ET business and began his own journey into providing donor services to the beef and dairy industries.

For the first few years, a majority of his time was spent travelling and setting up donors right on his client’s farms. The majority of his work was focused on dairy operations, but in the last five years, the dairy and beef work has evened out.

“We did most flush work right on the farm. With many dairy operations calving year round, they pretty much always had recips to set up. We do a lot of fresh transfers and freeze embryos, and we also travel to do everything right on the farm.”

During a transition period over the past five years, Diamond K Genetics introduced IVF, simultaneously shifting from on-farm work to housing donors. A long time friend Bob Grass, Grass-Lunning Simmental, Leroy, Minnesota, housed donors for Bigalk’s clients. “At first about 10% of my work was completed on Bob’s farm, but I was still doing conventional flush work. When IVF was introduced, we were down there every other week to collect donors.”

Two years ago, Bigalk built a donor housing facility on his farm.

The enterprise now completes most donor work on-site. “We collect IVF donors weekly and do in-house conventional flushes once or twice a week. Embryos produced in-house are transported to client’s farms for fresh or frozen transfers. We also have a mobile lab so we can still do on-farm conventional flushes and in-vitro transfers. We are continually adding new services and adapting our current services to the ever changing beef and dairy industries.”

The busiest time of year for Diamond K Genetics is the spring.

In conjunction with calving and breeding his own Simmental cattle, Bigalk also flushes and sets up recipients for beef industry clients.

In addition to himself, Bigalk has one technician who shares the workload with him. He shares, “Nikki Dube has been with me for about five years now. She handles all the paperwork while I handle the cow work. We split lab work like embryo sorting, grading, and freezing.”

Developing the Cattle Operation After calving from the end of January to mid-March, Bigalk transitions into one of his busiest seasons; simultaneously setting up donors and recipients for his beef clients and for Diamond K. By using high-accuracy AI sires and donor dams for the embryo transfer work, Bigalk hones-in on providing reliable genetics for their commercial customers, “You’ve got more cost involved when you start doing embryo transfer and AI work. But, we make a lot more genetic progress as we continue to collect data. Quality data makes the numbers more accurate, reliable, and consistent.”

From scheduling client work to working and breeding Diamond K cattle, a big part of their philosophy is that herd improvement and efficiency is a work in progress. Bigalk compares his beef selection decisions to that of the dairy industry, “As the dairy industry has shown over the last 10 years, there is a lot more genomic work, revising and editing that they are doing, but their accuracy is much more consistent because of consistent, quality data.”

From April to the end of June each year, half the cow herd is AI bred and put out with a clean up bull and the other half is set up as recipients. In recent years, Diamond K has expanded the bull and heifer offering by using cooperator herds, “I usually keep one or two donors on the farm to flush on my own, along with a few partnership donors. In the past, I've worked with a couple of different cooperators to put in a few embryos. As the interest grows in SimAngus™, so do we.”

When the clean-up bull gets turned out in the beginning of May, the cows are moved to pasture. Bigalk focuses on rotational grazing on their permanent pasture. A portion of their cropland is designated for corn and beans. Most of the corn is turned into silage, and winter hay is purchased. Depending on the year, cows are left out after harvest to graze the corn and beans through December.

At weaning time, bull calves are sent to the Aggen family for development, and in February, the yearling bulls are sold in the Oak Meadow Farm’s annual sale. Bred heifers being prepped for the sale are shipped to a partner in northern Minnesota through November for grazing. “We typically get the heifers back the first of November, and we jump into sale photos for both bulls and heifers in December.”

In addition to the partnership sale in February, Bigalk consigns a few heifers to the South Dakota Source Sale and the Minnesota State Sale.

I’ve always sold my bulls with Oak Meadow Farms, who have a great commercial client base in southeast Minnesota and northeastern Iowa.” Bigalk shares, “We are making strides to ratchet-up our marketing and broaden our client list.”

To ensure that their customers are selecting the right animal for their operation, Bigalk is dedicated to data collection. With the assistance of Leoma Wells from Data Genie, a company designed to help with data management and submission to breed associations, Bigalk collects mature cow weights and body condition scores on the entire cow herd in addition to calf birth weights, weaning weights, and yearling data. “As my business picks up and gets busier, partnering with Leoma helps ensure I am collecting all the data I need to be submitting. For example, I am preparing to collect all udder scores this upcoming calving season. She helps by reminding me of deadlines, what data needs to be collected, and what tools are available to make it the easiest.”

“My herd is also DNA tested,” shares Bigalk, referencing the Cow Herd DNA Roundup, a genomic research project the ASA launched in partnership with Neogen Genomics. “I’m providing parent-confirmed bulls and females in addition to enhanced EPDs.” When making sale selection decisions, Bigalk focuses on a combination of indexes and phenotype, “We’re trying to sell bulls and females that are phenotypically impressive, have a lot of growth and muscle, but are as problem-free as can be. So we select animals with no holes in their EPD profile. We want to sell a good looking animal that is well above average $API or $TI.” Bigalk emphasizes the importance of uniformity, “Our clients appreciate the numbers more and more, and feel they are getting a more well-rounded animal. Phenotypically, the bulls are big and stout, but with the calving ease and carcass traits to make them successful additions to our customer’s herds.”

A combination of data collection, Index and phenotype selection allows Diamond K Genetics to remain at the forefront of the cattle industry.

Raising the Legacy Kory’s wife, Kareen, is a nurse in Rochester and helps with the operation as much as possible. Kareen also grew up in rural, southeast Minnesota and like Kory, wants to provide their children the opportunity to grow up in the agriculture industry.

Their oldest kids, James and Lilla are twins, age nine, and Peyton, the youngest is five. All three have been involved in Cloverbuds, and the oldest have started exhibiting livestock in 4-H and other local events.

“The last two years, they’ve also gone to the Minnesota Beef Expo in October. It’s a really great weekend where kids are involved in events in addition to showing cattle,” Kory shares, referring to the Expo’s Knowledge Bowl, Livestock Judging, and Ambassador competition, not unlike many of the AJSA competitions the kids may get to experience in the future.

“It’s a fun activity to get them outside and get them involved, and they are liking it.

We hope to start doing more of it,” he concludes, “It was always our plan to be out in the country, raise our kids with livestock, and provide them the opportunity to take over the operation someday.” ◆ Kory and Kareen Bigalk with their three children: Peyton, James, and Lilla.

Updates toGrowth Trait Predictions By the International Genetic Solutions Science Team

The genetic evaluation is constantly evolving with updates to models as new science is discovered and new technologies are available.

One area under recent scrutiny is the prediction of growth traits (birth, weaning, and yearling weights, and milk).

The International Genetic Solutions (IGS) Genetic Evaluation Science Team is implementing the following areas of improvement for the prediction of growth traits.

1. Milk modeling updates.

3. New DNA Marker subset.

The magnitude, and even direction, of the correlation between weaning weight direct and milk, has been long debated in scientific circles. In fact, there is a wide range of estimates that exist in the scientific literature. Given that, the science team developed a model that assumes milk and weaning weight direct are independent (i.e., genetic correlation of 0). In addition, with some of the other proposed updates, it was discovered that the evaluation solved more effectively when genomics were removed for Milk EPDs. In light of this discovery, the IGS Milk EPD will not use genomic information for the time being.

As the number of genotyped animals has increased, so has our ability to estimate marker effects and identify subsets that are more predictive. Relative to growth traits, a new (and larger) subset of markers has been identified to add more accuracy to EPD.

2. Different variances for different sexes.

Males usually have a higher growth potential than females simply due to gender. As a consequence, the variation associated with their weights also tends to be greater. This difference in the amount of variation between the sexes are set to a male scale in the updated growth trait predictions.

4. Accounting for different birth weight collection methods.

When we began looking into growth trait data, we discovered that not all birth weights followed expected amounts of variation. Some of the examples of reduced variation included weights rounded to the nearest 5 pounds, reduced variation when hoof tapes were used, and likely-fabricated data with little to no variation. Some of these data are useful, but they are clearly on a different scale and need to be treated appropriately. Dr. Bruce Golden developed a way to use machine learning to recognize unique features of each class of birth weight observation and predict how it was obtained. By accounting for the various categories, the genetic evaluation is still able to use submitted records that fall out of biological expectations for most scenarios, while more accurately accounting for different practices of collecting the weights.

Results of Updates to Growth Model With these proposed changes, a considerable amount of work went into testing if the new models improved growth trait predictions. One of the most common procedures for evaluating updates to EPD systems is to exclude a certain portion of the phenotypes available, run the evaluation, and compare the correlation of the

EPD from two systems to the phenotypes that were removed from the evaluation (higher correlation is better). For these updates, this procedure was used where all animals born after 2018 were excluded from the evaluation system and then comparisons between the current growth trait EPDs and the updated EPDs were made to this phenotypic information. The results for each of the analyses are presented in the following table.

The results in the table above show the evaluation updates had higher correlations to phenotypes than the previous growth trait models. This equates to more precise EPDs for Birth, Weaning, and Yearling Weight.

An additional trait that is evaluated with the growth analysis is the Milk EPD. A Milk EPD represents the genetic difference in calf weaning weight based on the maternal environment provided by the dam. Due to the nature of this trait being the maternal component of weaning weight, a different validation strategy must be used to evaluate the updated predictions. To evaluate the updated Milk predictions an expected weaning weight for the excluded animals was formed using the following equation:

Predicted Weaning Weight = Calf WW EBV + Dam’s Milk EBV This predicted weaning weight was then correlated with the excluded weaning weight phenotypes. Again, the updated predictions of Milk had higher correlations compared to the previous Milk EPDs (0.42 vs. 0.39, respectively). These results show that the updated predictions more precisely predict the weaning weight of an animal than the currently published evaluation.

Breeders may notice reranking of animals with the release of the growth trait updates. While the change may be unsettling, the end results by every measure have shown an improvement in the precision of the growth trait predictions. â—†

ASA Launches Calf Crop Genomic Testing Project Calf Crop Genomics is a recent program launched by the American Simmental Association in collaboration with Neogen®. Calf Crop Genomics offers a 50% off GGP-LD genomic test including parentage ($25 compared to $50 equivalent test) to participating breeders who test their entire calf crop group. Genotyping entire contemporary groups is important to 1.) use genomically-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) for selection decisions, 2.) reduce selection bias in genomic predictions, and 3.) increase the volume of genotyped animals for future improvements to genetic predictions. The latter two points make any singular genomic test in the future better for all members using genomics.

Cow Herd DNA Roundup Continues The ASA Board of Trustees approved Phase II of the Cow Herd DNA Roundup at the 2019 Fall Focus meeting. The project will continue to accept new herds at $25 per sample for a low-density genomic test. Members must test 90% of their calving-age cows to qualify for the reduced price.

When members submit mature cow body weights and body condition scores or hip heights from 90% of their calving-age cows, they will receive a $5 credit to their account for each cow reported. Cows must be 18 months of age or older when mature cow measurements are taken to qualify for the $5 credit. The $5 credit will only be applied once in an animal’s life (if a member received a credit for the phenotypes in 2018 for that cow, they cannot receive another credit for the same cow with a new weight and BCS in 2019). Heifers may also be tested at the $25 price point and may receive a $5 credit if mature cow data is submitted after they reach 18 months of age. For members who have already participated in the CHR project, the same $25 rate is available

for heifers and new purchases as long as 90% of the member’s calving age cows have a genomic test.

With the advent of the Calf Crop Genomics Project, the ASA Board of Trustees has amended the CHR program for females younger than calving-age.

Heifer calves and replacement heifers will no longer be eligible for the CHR research rate as of January 1, 2021, but calving-age cows and new purchases of calving age will remain eligible for the research rate.

Performance Advocate Program Update At the 2019 Fall Focus Board Meeting in Manhattan, KS, the Board passed a resolution to revise the Performance Advocate Program including three major changes.

1. Among the traits included, the program requires record submission on 90% of the contemporary group (rather than 100%) to gather records on nearly the whole herd while allowing for circumstances where records are missed.

2. Establish a two-tier system to qualify.

Since additional traits are being added (see point 3) but some of these traits are difficult and/or expensive to collect, there will be a two-tier system for qualifying as a Performance Advocate. If THE herds submit 90% of the records on eight of the 13 traits, they qualify for the first tier. THE herds with 90% of the records on 10 out of the 13 traits qualify for the higher tier system.

3. An additional seven traits have been added to the list of qualifying records in the program As ASA develops more traits (example, feet/leg scores), they may be added to the Performance Advocate Program. ◆

I don’t think we can adequately express our gratitude to Darla, Chance, South Dakota Adult and Junior Associations, and the ASA staff for all their hard work.

It was great to see everyone enjoy their time in Brookings and participating in the contests and cattle shows.

The 40th National Classic was one for the books with 729 head of cattle exhibited by 463 juniors from across the United States and Canada. Our contests looked a little different this year, but y’all didn’t let that affect your drive for success.

I am truly honored to have the opportunity to serve you as the 2020-2021 AJSA President. I’m excited to see what we will accomplish together. The Board continues to plan for upcoming events with frequent conference calls and (fall and spring) board meetings. We will be setting goals for what we want to accomplish as a Board. I challenge you to do the same. No matter your age, set one (or more) goal. Then work to achieve it and keep moving forward.

BEEF BUSINESS Beef Cattle Experts Outline ‘pillars’ for Sustainable Ranches In agriculture, the word sustainability is often associated with environmental topics, but a senior official with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association said it also has economic and social ties.

“The three pillars of sustainability are economic, environmental, and social, and there are ways that cattle ranchers can impact each of these on a local level,” said Myriah Johnson, NCBA’s senior director of sustainability research and recent guest on the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute Cattle Chat podcast. Johnson is a contractor to the beef checkoff and her research is funded through checkoff support.

Johnson said producers need to first focus on economics; “If we don’t make money on our operations, they are not sustainable.” K-State Research and Extension agricultural economist Dustin Pendell said “Producers won’t know where they stand economically without collecting data. It is important to have benchmarks to measure by.” Veterinarian and Beef Cattle Institute director Brad White advised producers to consider both income and expenses to find a balance between the two.

Another economic factor that also has environmental implications are transition plans.“When thinking of transition plans, we focus on handing down the ranch from one generation to the next, but there is also an environmental impact in reducing land fragmentation,” Johnson said.

When land is fragmented, subdivisions often are created and new roads are built, which can lead to far-reaching implications for wildlife.

Johnson said that water management and the use of diesel fuel are two other environmental factors within a rancher’s control. “When we burn diesel fuel, that is a resource that can contribute toward greenhouse gases so we need to consider ways to be efficient in using that resource,” Johnson said, using an example of maximizing driving routes as one way to best use diesel fuel.“Not only does that have environmental benefits, but it also has an economic advantage because there is a direct cost for running the truck,” White said.

Johnson’s third pillar is social sustainability: “Worker safety is an example of social sustainability. It is often something ranchers don’t think a lot about.”She encouraged cattle producers to have “tailgate conversations” with employees

where they discuss an emergency action plan and identify ways to reduce hazards.

An added benefit of these conversations, White said, is the likelihood of employee retention. “With planning and training, we are able to minimize employee loss,” he said.

Shortened Breeding Season for Cattle Provides Marketing Benefits

By Oklahoma State University Extension The ability to sell heavier, more uniform groups of calves at marketing time underscores the need for spring cow-calf operations to complete their breeding season no later than the end of June.

“Studies show that larger groups of calves that look alike, weigh the same, are the same breed, and have been treated the same bring more dollars per hundredweight than animals that have to be sold one to three at a time,” said Glenn Selk, OSU Extension emeritus animal scientist and managing editor of the university’s popular Cow-Calf Corner newsletter and SUNUP television segment.

Research from Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, Arkansas, and Kentucky has shown a well-defined, 60-day breeding season can provide cow-calf operations — regardless of size — with this marketing advantage. Oklahoma data collected on 15,473 lots of feeder cattle sold at 14 auction locations indicated the following: Lots with 10 or more steers sold for $7.14 per hundredweight more than the price of steers sold as singles.The premium for multiple head lots held for heifers but at about $4 per hundredweight.

Multiple head lots that were not uniform sold for approximately $2 per hundredweight less than uniform lots for steers and heifers.

A 2010 study on Oklahoma Quality Beef Network sales indicated the advantage may be on the upswing. Lots of 10 calves averaged about $8 per hundredweight more than similar calves sold one head at a time. The advantage increased up to truck-load size lots of 40 to 60 head where sale prices were as much as $12 to $13 dollars more per hundredweight as compared to similar cattle sold as singles.

“The premium for uniform, multiplehead lots is generally attributed to the convenience of filling orders for cattle of a specified description on the part of an order buyer,” Selk said. “Larger, uniform lots also may indicate a single point of origin for the cattle leading to less stress and fewer health problems.”

To take advantage of a shortened breeding season, cows must be in good body condition at calving and only bulls known to be fertile should be used as herd sires.

Good news for cattle producers: Markets are returning to normal as the nation adapts to coronavirus disruptions, said Derrell Peel, OSU Extension livestock marketing specialist.

“Beef demand will be critical with supplies increasing in the second half of the year,” he said. “Retail grocery stores will transition from limited beef supplies in recent weeks to ample supplies at the same time that food service demand is slowly building.”

Mystery Seeds From China Identified Residents in all 50 states have reported receiving bags of unsolicited seeds. Officials have warned the shipments of mystery seeds, which appear to have originated in China, could be invasive plant species.

According to a recent news release, USDA has identified some of the plant species, and they appear to be innocuous.

At least 14 of the seed species had been identified and include mustard, cabbage, morning glory, hibiscus, and rose, as well as herbs like mint, sage, rosemary, and lavender.

The USDA says if you receive a packet of seeds, do not plant them and contact your state plant regulatory official.

Although the species identified so far are harmless, plant experts have warned that seeds from other parts of the world could damage crops.

The packages are most likely part of a “brushing” scam, the USDA warns. In this scam, a seller sends unsolicited items to

someone and then posts false positive customer reviews to boost sales. “Brushing scams involving seed packets in international mail shipments are not uncommon,” the USDA said. “US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has intercepted similar seed shipments in recent years.”

Phylissia Clark of the Better Business Bureau shared in a news release that if you are a victim of brushing, “your identity has been compromised. Somebody knows enough about you to create a profile online and use you to manipulate systems”.

Many of the seeds have been mailed in white or yellow pouches with the words “China Post” in English and other words in Chinese lettering. Some of them falsely suggest jewelry inside; others provide no clues about contents. The USDA continues to investigate.

COVID-19 Not Carried by Food The US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued a joint statement addressing food export restrictions, emphasizing that there is no evidence that people can contract the coronavirus from food or food packaging. The statements were made in response to China’s customs authority reportedly suspending imports from processing plants in Europe and the US after recent outbreaks at or near the slaughter facilities.

The statement in a news release from the US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D., says: “The United States understands the concerns of consumers here domestically and around the world who want to know that producers, processors, and regulators are taking every necessary precaution to prioritize food safety especially during these challenging times. However, efforts by some countries to restrict global food exports related to COVID-19 transmission are not consistent with the known science of transmission.”

“There is no evidence that people can contract COVID-19 from food or from food packaging. The US food safety system, overseen by our agencies, is the global leader in ensuring the safety of our food products, including products for export.”

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in conjunction with the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), has issued guidance for manufacturing facilities,

including food facilities, specific to controlling the spread of COVID-19 between workers.

The COVID-19 guidelines from CDC and OSHA are separate and distinct from the food safety requirements that all US facilities must follow to ensure food safety.

The FDA, an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

School Meal Rules More Flexible This Fall USDA announced a range of waivers to provide more flexibility to adapt meal service operations for children in the fall for schools, states, and childcare providers, including allowing for new feeding options as institutions return from closings due to the coronavirus.

Noting schools are considering many different learning models, USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue said the flexibilities allow organizations “to operate the USDA child nutrition programs in ways that make sense given their local, on-the-ground situations and ensure America’s children can count on meal service throughout the school year.”

The waivers allow meals that do not meet normal meal pattern requirements when necessary to keep kids fed; meals to be served outside of group settings and outside of standard times to facilitate grab-and-go and other alternate service options; and parent/guardian pick-up of meals for students participating in distance learning.

USDA also is waiving the requirement for high schools to provide students the option to select some of the foods offered in a meal. The agency explained that the practice, known as “offer versus serve” encouraged social distancing or meals-inthe-classroom models would make the regulatory requirement difficult. ◆

CUTTING EDGE Use of Gender-Selected Semen in Beef Cattle

The use of new technologies by the beef industry usually lags its development by researchers. An example of this would be gender-selected semen. The incorporation of this or any new technology is dictated by its necessity and positive economic advantage. Semen sorted for a specific gender (sexed semen) became commercially available in 2003 for dairy cattle but did not have significant use by the industry until 2006.

On the other hand, the number of sires with sexed semen available for the beef industry was still 0 (zero) in 2007 but increased to 70 in 2011. The delayed use of gender-sorted semen by the beef industry may be related to the perceived economic return. For the dairy industry the economic benefit for heifer calves over bull calves is huge; however, in the beef industry gender differences in economic return exist but are not as dramatic. Therefore, for the beef industry to adapt this technology more knowledge is needed on how to capture economic returns from incorporating it.

First it is important to highlight that calves born from genderselected semen will have similar production traits as their herd mates from conventional semen. For example: birth weight, calving ease, calf vigor, calf health, weaning weight, and mortal-

ity rates before weaning do not differ between calves from gender-selected and conventional semen. Second, with recent improvements in this technology conception rates with genderselected semen are typically between 80% to 95% of conventional semen, in other words if AI conception rates are 60% with conventional semen, with gender-selected semen you would expect conception rates to be between 48% to 57%. One thing to be aware of to get the best possible conception rates is cows that exhibit estrus prior to AI have greater conception rates compared to cows that do not exhibit estrus behavior. So, the use of gender-selected semen only in animals that exhibit estrus prior to AI will result in greater conception rates. Another method is to delay insemination of non-estrus cows to 20 hours after an injection of GnRH. Even though gender differences are not as large in the beef industry as they are in the dairy industry, gender-selected semen has many applications which will depend on the herd.

In commercial beef cattle a strategy would be to use genderselected semen to produce replacement heifers. This strategy would start by selecting cows with desired maternal traits, such as age at sexual maturity, milk yield, fertility, maternal behavior, adaptation to environmental challenges, and longevity. These animals would then be inseminated with gender-selected semen from sires with similar maternal traits.

An advantage of this strategy would be the production of top replacement heifers and increasing the rate of genetic change in the herd. In addition, there would be a decrease in the number of steers produced from maternal sires. This benefits the herd as these steers often have decreased performance when compared to steers from terminal sires. When the number of cows to be inseminated with gender-selected semen is achieved the remaining cows can be inseminated to terminal sires, knowing these calves will not be kept as replacement heifers. It also brings the opportunity to utilize different breeds, without affecting the herd’s genetics. The remaining cows could also be bred to herd bulls with terminal characteristics or of a different breed, since no heifers are expected to be retained from those dams. Another alternative, would be inseminate the remaining females with male selected semen from terminal sires, increasing the proportion of steers produced from terminal sires in the herd. Overall, the inclusion of gender-selected semen can bring economic advantages to the beef industry. However, there are situations in which the use of gender-selected semen can negatively impact the economic return of a herd, too. If only female selected semen is used to inseminate the entire herd; this will optimize the selection of replacement heifers but the proportion of male:female calves will shift from an approximately 50:50 to a greater number of females whichcould affect economic returns due to lower prices for heifers sold to slaughter. If only male selected semen is used to inseminate the entire herd; this will optimize the genetic performance of steer calves for slaughter but removes any genetic benefit of AI on the future of the herd, as replacement heifers can only be selected from calves born from the clean-up bull battery. Thus, the use of gender-selected semen in a beef herd has the opportunity to benefit the overall performance and future of the herd, but care must be given to implement this technology correctly. ◆

CORPORATE REPORT Marfrig to Build Tracking System for Cattle Raised in Amazon Marfrig Global Foods SA, the second-largest beef producer in the world, will start a five-year project to build a tracking system for cattle raised in critical areas of the Amazon, according to founder and chairman Marcos Molina, who says it’s possible to do the same throughout the nation.

While Marfrig says it doesn’t buy cattle directly from farms in areas where illegal deforestation has been an issue, the initiative addresses indirect suppliers, one of the main problems linking cattle to deforestation.

Over the past decade, major Brazilian beef companies invested a lot of time and money to show they don’t make direct purchases of cattle raised in deforested areas. But meatpackers can’t ensure they are not buying from any farms involved in deforestation indirectly.

Repeating the statements made to Brazil’s Vice President Hamilyon Mourao, Molina said, “The beef sector is the most affected by Brazil’s bad reputation on fighting Amazon deforestation, but issues related to cattle raising are the easiest to solve.”

According to Marfrig, the government has the ability to track all of Brazil’s 200 million head of cattle, but actions are needed to ensure that tracking systems are effective. Molina recommends adding an environmental topic in documents for animal transit and requiring all cattle to be tracked from a certain date.

gain access to new markets. In the article, Molina gave the example of Uruguay, which has access to 12 markets partly thanks to its full tracking system.

Marfrig currently exports beef from Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and the US. “Marfrig is doing a five-year plan,” Molina said. “But if we were able to join the government and companies on this purpose, we could do it faster.”

The news release shared that Brazil’s Vice President, who chairs the Council of the Amazon, was open to the suggestions, adding the federal government is aligned with Brazilian companies’ concerns about growing deforestation criticism.

In attendance at the meeting, senior executives of other companies including Cargill Inc. and Suzano SA sent a letter to authorities stating that the negative perceptions are potentially damaging to both reputation and business prospects, but Molina was the only representative from the meat industry to sign the letter.

In an attempt to limit the indirect supplier issues, around 40% of the cattle slaughtered by Marfrig in Brazil are supplied by farmers that raise animals from birth to slaughter.

Burger King Retracts Claims Burger King released a new commercial touting the use of lemongrass in cows’ diets to reduce methane emissions by “up to 33%”.

The globally-recognized restaurant chain shared in a news release that they partnered with scientists to develop and test the new diet, which reduced cattle methane emissions by an average of 33% per day during the last three or four months of their lives.

The diet includes the addition of 100 grams of lemongrass leaves daily to their regular feed in the last four months, helping cows release less methane — a greenhouse gas blamed for contributing to global warming — as they digest their food.

While introducing us to the eco-friendly Whopper, Burger King noted “cattle are responsible for roughly 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions,” a percentage cited from the United Nations, but American beef production is responsible for 3% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Beef industry news outlets, skeptical to the lemongrass claims, interviewed Dr. Frank Mitloehner, a University of California-Davis professor, one of the world’s leading experts on air quality. He shared that there are technologies that can reduce methane production by up to one-third, but, “lemongrass is not one of them.”

Two studies have been conducted on lemongrass. One was conducted at UC Davis, “and their results have been inconclusive. The second one in Mexico and their research has not been published,” meaning not peer reviewed. Therefore, Mitloehner calls Burger King’s promotion of lemongrass “premature”. The beef and dairy industry would love if lemongrass provided a tool to lower the environmental impact of livestock production, but Mitloehner shares that the science isn’t fully conclusive yet.

Additionally, Burger King used problematic cow farts as the hook to their advertising. The majority of the methane emissions emerge from belches — the other end of the cow.

After receiving flack from the animal agriculture community, the company dropped the TV ad and asked Mitloehner to work with them, moving forward. “They have asked me to cooperate with them in order to infuse science-based research on the one hand and get communication out — and check it before it reaches the masses,” he said. ◆

INTERNATIONAL Globally Canned Meat Gains Ground

10 Tons of Chinese Meat Seized

Canned meat, scorned by those who prefer a fresh product, is currently gaining in popularity. The booming global demand for products like Spam and canned corned beef is taking the meat industry by storm.

In the US, sales surged more than 70% in the 15 weeks ended June 13. In the UK, consumption of canned corned beef has taken off. Even in South Korea, where Spam is an old favorite, sales are expanding at the fastest pace in years.

The public’s increased hunger for canned protein started as people stocked up or hoarded staples with long shelf lives during stay-at-home orders to stem the coronavirus. Additionally, with millions thrown out of work in the last few months, consumers are looking for a way to cut back on grocery bills, and they’re trading in fresh meat for canned varieties.

Shortages of some fresh meat, especially in the US, also helped fuel sales.

Tulip Pork Luncheon Meat, sold in 120 markets around the world, is expecting sales to increase 25% this year. Sales are “growing all over,” including in the UK, Germany, Greece, Japan, and Singapore, among many others. Marfrig Global Foods SA, the Brazilian beef giant, is seeing a similar jump at its Uruguay business, which supplies corned beef to the US. Sales of the product are expected to reach as high as 3,500 metric tons this year. That would be almost double compared with 2019, when about 1,800 tons were sold.

US Customs and Border Protection CPB officials intercepted 19,555 pounds of prohibited pork, chicken, beef, and duck products arriving from China at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

According to the CBP statement, most of the animal products were mixed in boxes of headphones, door locks, kitchenware, LCD tablets, trash bags, swim fins, cell phone covers, plastic cases, and household goods. In the first five months of fiscal year 2020, prohibited meat interceptions from China at the LA & Long Beach Seaport has increased 70% compared with the same period a year ago.

Additionally, airline passengers bringing in prohibited items remains a top priority, even with international flights down substantially due to COVID-19.

China Suspends Processing Plants in Brazil Four Brazilian meat processing facilities have recently been banned from exporting to China. The General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) has temporarily suspended meat imports from three Brazilian meat processing plants, said Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.

The Brazilian Ministry also decided to voluntarily suspend exports to China from another facility, which had been ordered to stop production temporarily by a court decision.

Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture shared in a statement that they have not been supplied with the reasons for the suspension. The Ministry said it had already started negotiations with the GACC to lift the suspensions and allow the resumption of exports from these meat processing facilities to China.

The suspended plants include Marfrig's beef processing facility in Várzea Grande, Mato Grosso state; JBS's chicken processing plant in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul state; Minuano's chicken processing facility in Lajeado, also in Rio Grande do Sul; and Agra Agroindustrial de Alimentos. ◆

AJSA Member Receives Memorial Scholarship One junior member of the Association was awarded a scholarship from the 605/805 Memorial Fund started by the Donors Unlimited Cattle Sale.

Will Shelby, Madil, Oklahoma, a stuWill Shelby dent at Oklahoma State University, was ranked based on scholastic and extracurricular achievement, and received a cash award to be used for the advancement of his education.

The scholarship was established to honor the memories of Brent Bietlespacher, Logan Rau, and Nick Reimann, three young South Dakota cattlemen who died in a tragic plane crash while returning from the spring 2014 Donors Unlimited Share the Future Sale in Hereford, Texas. A portion of each purchase made at a Donors Unlimited event goes toward the funding of this scholarship, and to-date, more than $51,000 has been awarded to students in need.

● Edwin Foshee, Thomaston, GA, a partner in Danfowin Farm, passed away r e c e n t l y. H e a v i l y involved in agricultural organizations, he was a member of the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association and Mid-Georgia Cattlemen’s Association where he was Foshee President in 1978 and Secretary-Treasurer in 1983. In 1990, he was selected as Purebred Cattleman of the Year by the Mid Georgia Cattleman. Author’s Note: This is the fifth in a series of articles for this column featuring some of the “Pioneers” so prominent in the introduction of Simmental cattle to North America. In finalizing the coverage of the storied history of Bar 5, this piece will focus on their latter years. Credit again is given to the kind input and assistance from Wilf Davis.

Our Pioneers – Bar 5 Simmental Breeders, LTD – The Latter Years

The previous article in this series ended with the sale of Bar 5 by Emil Stange of Springfield, Missouri. This occurred in July 1990. The new owners were Ron and Carla Nolan of Harkaway Simmentals, Markdale, Ontario, and the Langills of Farnham, Ontario. The Nolans had operated their Markdale farm since 1973 and began the development of a quality Simmental herd focusing on the polled factor. Eventually, the Langills sold their ownership stake to the Nolans.

Ron and Carla’s son, Greg, devoted much of his time to the operations of both Harkaway and Bar 5. The first Bar 5 sale under the Nolans was in the fall of 1990. This female sale saw cattle and embryos sell to breeders in Argentina, Brazil, and Australia. Once again, Bar 5 had opened new markets. By 1991, polled Fullblood Simmental bulls from Harkaway were featured in the Bar 5 bull sale and they found good acceptance in the industry. To further promote their genetics, Bar 5 successfully exhibited their cattle in shows in Markdale, London Western Fair, Ag Ex, Toronto Royal, Agribition, Denver, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. At the Denver Stock Show, Bar 5 exhibited the Reserve Champion Pen of Three Bulls, a first for Bar 5, and continued to show in the Pen of Three Bulls class there for several years.

In 1994, Bar 5 offered 40 polled Fullblood bulls in their sale with 20 sons of Harkaway Enforcer 16Y. The featured son of 16Y was Bar 5 Eastwood selling to Prospect Hill Farms of Ontario for $112,000. 16Y was a homozygous polled, red, ring-eyed herd sire that put growth and thick-

ness in his calves. His sons went on to top the next four bull sales. He has over 400 progeny in the CSA registry. In 2001, the Nolans decided to concentrate operations to Ontario and dispersed their Manitoba holdings larryhmaxey@gmail.com in August of that year with Bar 5 now anchored in Markdale.

The interest in the Fleckvieh strain of Fullblood Simmental at Bar 5 began to increase in the 1990’s. In the mid 90’s, Ron was in South Africa and was introduced to their Fleckvieh Simmental cattle that had origins in Austria and Germany. Impressed with the cattle quality, Ron arranged to have embryos shipped to Bar 5 and implanted at the Ontario farm. With the birth of the first South African calf in February 1997, a whole new chapter in the life of Bar 5 had been opened, and what a chapter it was! An entire program was developed to continue the South African embryo importation system that flourished until Bar 5 dispersed in 2016 when Ron decided to retire.

Even though Bar 5 dispersed in 2016, the Bar 5 name and legacy lives on. The Nolans still own Bar 5. They have maintained the Bar 5 tradition by continuing to run cattle in Markdale with their son Greg, daughters, grandsons, and other family members actively involved in the business of feeding a hungry world.

A special thanks is in order to the countless people involved with Bar 5 over the past 50-plus years that contributed to this remarkable story of a true “Pioneer” in the Simmental breed in North America.

Going forward, other “Pioneers” will be profiled. I hope you have enjoyed these pieces to date and look forward to more stories to come. ◆

As of this writing, the 2020 NAILE is still being planned for November. Of course, many unknowns exist and especially so relative to the Covid-19 crisis that the world is dealing with. Each day presents new challenges. In August, the Kentucky State Fair is still on schedule and I understand that organizers have developed a unique and unprecedented set of plans in order to accommodate the strict State health guidelines to meet Covid-19 requirements. Should Kentucky State Fair management and staff successfully conduct the August events, this will be a good barometer to evaluate whether plans will continue for the NAILE. Italian Veggie Beef Soup Ingredients 1-½ pounds lean ground beef (90% lean) 2 medium onions, chopped 4 cups chopped cabbage 1 package (16 ounces) frozen mixed vegetables 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes 1 bay leaf 3 teaspoons Italian seasoning teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 cartons (32 ounces each) reducedsodium beef broth

Directions 1.) In a six-quart stockpot, cook ground beef and onions over medium-high heat until beef is no longer pink, breaking up beef into crumbles, 6-8 minutes; drain.

2.) Add cabbage, mixed vegetables, tomatoes, seasonings, and broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until cabbage is crisp-tender, 10-15 minutes. Remove bay leaf.

Freezing option: Freeze cooled soup in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Heat throughly in a saucepan, stirring occasionally; add a little broth if necessary.

Interest charges of 1.5 percent per month (18 percent APR) will be added to accounts 30 days past due. If an account becomes 60 days delinquent, all ASA Publication, Inc. work may be suspended until full payment is made. After review by the ASA Executive Committee, ASA privileges may be denied to those with accounts over 90 days delinquent.
