VIEWPOINT

By Gordon Hodges, Chairman of the Board of Trustees In my 11 total years serving as an ASA Trustee representing the Eastern Region I have written numerous Viewpoint articles, but this time is a little different. As I begin my 12th year as a Trustee, I am preparing to spend this year as Chairman of the Board. Several fellow Trustees as well as a couple senior staff members have suggested I use this Viewpoint as an opportunity to state my goals for the year, to comment on what my agenda will be, my priorities, and what I would like to achieve. Well, that’s very easy. I want to see market share increases in all factions of SimGenetics, along with expansion and improvement in ASA members’ programs and services. I think these would be the goals of any incoming chairman. The big task at hand is how to achieve these goals. After some thought, it suddenly hit me that I simply need to follow the ASA Mission Statement that was established during a two-day strategic planning session at the 2018 Denver meetings as a collaboration of the entire ASA Board and numerous key staff members.

As your ASA Chairman for this upcoming year, I would like to challenge our standing committees and staff to concentrate on our established Core Policies and use them in a way to accomplish our Mission Statement. If we can stay focused on our Core Policies I feel comfortable we will continue on the right path to accomplishing our Mission Statement. If the American Simmental Association is successful in this established Mission Statement, then we will also be successful at growth and expansion of SimGenetics in the industry.

American Simmental Association Mission Statement The success of the American Simmental Association is dependent on our members’ cattle making a significant genetic contribution to the beef industry.

By utilizing the most advanced science, the highest priority is to maintain services and products which bring value to ASA members’ customers.

In addition to the Mission Statement, the following Core Policies were established in the same strategic planning session:

American Simmental Association Core Policies Science – Commitment to science and development of the most effective selection tools. Advance ASA in the industry.

Membership – Development, registration, and promotion of SimGenetics.

Youth – Support Junior programs. Guide the junior membership and their programs to learn life skills, science, and use the technology, and financial responsibilities. Involve the Foundation.

Collaboration – Commitment to partnerships with industry leaders and universities to advance research and science. Advancing selection tools, DNAenhanced EPDs, and monitoring genetic defects.

Promotion – Promotion and marketing to enhance our members’ market share.

Ensure that SimGenetics continues to appeal to the commercial industry.

Data Growth – Offer the most advanced genetic evaluation services with the largest genetic evaluation services with the largest database, regardless of breed.

Financial Stability – ASA will maintain sufficient financial reserves to assure leadership in the beef industry, funds for continued research and development, and a thriving breed association.

Services – Offer programs relating to all beef production segments. Be leaders.

Step outside traditional practices and offer opportunities for our members to grow in the industry.

Education – For advancement and profit or our members and their customers. u

By Emme Troendle “We do a little bit of everything,” says Grant Jones, speaking for the family’s Chundy Land and Cattle operation, located 26 miles north of Haigler (population 147), in the southwestern corner of Nebraska. “We are a diversified operation that runs registered and commercial cow-calf pairs, sells registered bulls and commercial heifers, backgrounds steers to 850 pounds, but also feeds out cattle and collects data from birth weights to carcass, to ensure that we are doing things right.”

Situated on Nebraska’s grass-rich, rolling hills, nicknamed the “Mini Sandhills,” irrigation water is pumped from the Ogallala Aquafer. The Jones family has learned to think outside the box to take advantage of natural and financial opportunities.

“We graze on irrigated pasture to improve forage and increase herd size. Our region is really sandy. Irrigation is vital for growing grain and forage for our herd, but we work under water restrictions. Developing a good rotation that will work for us is important.”

The main ranch runs along the Chase and Dundy county line, where the ranch derives its name, Chundy, a combination of the two counties. Jones represents the sixth generation to grow up in southwest Nebraska and the fifth generation to manage the cattle enterprise. His great-great grandparents, Arda and Grace, started the original 40-acre ranch as homesteaders in 1922.

Since then, each generation has had a hand in expanding and developing the cattle operation. Today, under the management of Grant and his father, Shawn, the cow herd has expanded to 150 registered, 700 commercial Simmental, Angus, and SimAngus™ cattle.

Historical Evolution “Our family homesteaded just north of our main headquarters,” Jones says, describing the transition of the family’s cattle business. “We have always been a commercial operation, but in recent years, we have expanded to offer breeding stock.”

The original property was split between his great-grandfather, Vinton, and his brother, Irvin; but in 1988, Jones’ grandparents, Stan and Phyllis, expanded the operation after purchasing adjoining land to the south.

The herd was primarily commercial Herefords, until Jones’ father and grandfather started utilizing AI in the early ’90s, and the operation shifted to black-hided cattle. “My dad saw what the Angus breed was doing for market-

ing and switched gears to black cattle,” Jones shares. “At the same time, we were making leaps and bounds genetically, and we really started pushing for quality cattle over quantity.”

In 2009, Chundy Land and Cattle became multipliers for Powerline Genetics, and started breeding Simmental. As a part of Powerline Genetics, the group marketed 600 bulls annually, marketing the genetics of terminal sires for commercial customers. “At one point, the group was doing everything from pasture to plate,” he explains.

Jones remembers the ranch’s transition to Simmental. “I’ll be honest; I was nervous of the idea of us crossing our cows with Simmental. I grew up with my mom’s dad sharing how they got burned by the big calves, but after we got into breeding Simmental, I realized how much the breed has changed — this isn’t my grandfather’s breed anymore.”

The expansion to seedstock was slow. The first introduction to registered cattle was when Jones was in grade school exhibiting cattle in 4-H and FFA. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of NebraskaLincoln, Jones returned to the family operation with the same passion for seedstock he had when he was younger. His passion was compounded when the ranch started struggling to purchase cleanup bulls that had longevity. Jones explains, “We were buying fat bulls that weren’t making it. They would

work for one season, but we could never get them going again or they would get injured.”

To increase numbers of registered cattle, Jones purchased a local herd of registered Angus females and started breeding Simmental to develop a SimAngus cow herd base.

“We kept our first group of SimAngus heifers in 2012, and by 2014 we could tell that the 50% Simmental 50% Angus cows were performing above our expectations.

They were rock solid. My mind changed on what Simmental had (Continued on page 12) to offer.”

Female Focused “We are cow first,” Jones shares, “The bulls and steers we sell are a byproduct of our operation. If we raise cows that are getting it done — keeping body condition, raising a good calf, breeding back the first time, and doing that efficiently — not only will we be sustainable long term, but we will be developing good breeding stock for our customers and better beef for consumers.”

Jones focuses on data collection and efficiency on each individual cow. As a participant of ASA’s Total Herd Enrollment (THE) program, Chundy Land and Cattle records birth, weaning, and yearling weights on all cattle, and ultrasound data on bulls, in addition to all basic calf reporting requirements.

“We are big on data,” he says. “Whether it is registered or commercial, I like to know how each cow is doing to see if she performing how she needs to.”

In THE, registered and commercial replacement females have EPDs returned to assist in selection decisions. “In our part of the world, we need easy flushing, moderate milking cows that raise a good calf. I emphasize moderate milking because we need her to carry enough milk to optimize weaning weights on good years, but on harder years, she is still going to raise a calf that performs.”

Cow-calf pairs are provided with minerals and salt, but are not creep fed.

When selecting replacement heifers, yearling pelvic measurements are utilized to ensure that females will be able to calve a 60-pound or heavier calf. Phenotypic and genetic data are used to make final decisions. For Jones, stayability in the herd is a priority. He says, “She needs to look like a brood cow that has the structure and the EPDs behind her to make it.”

All cows are bred AI. Chundy Land and Cattle breeds 700 spring cows, 150 fall cows, and manages a cooperator herd of 225 cows.

The spring cow herd, primarily registered, starts calving the first of January and the fall herd starts calving in August for 60 days.

Clean-up bulls are utilized to catch any cows that may come back into heat.

Looking for ways to improve the herd, Jones is working on cutting down each calving season by retaining heifers and cows that breed in a 45-day window. “We want to keep cows that breed earlier, that will perform, and stay in the herd longer. Our goal is increased reproductivity for the customer who buys our bulls and heifers.”

When making AI sire selection decisions, Jones buys in groups of 50 to 100 semen straws. He leans toward bulls that are proven for best predictability on how the sire will perform in both the registered and commercial herd. “I don’t want the newest, shiniest thing. I want to see that the bull has progeny. I like to see that the bull has placed high in feed efficiency too,” he adds referring to the feed efficiency data ABS Global collects on AI sires.

Spring calves are weaned in August, and fall calves are weaned in March. The majority of the fall herd are commercial females, and calves are backgrounded through the summer to 850 pounds and sold in August.

This year, the ranch retained ownership on a set of steers to collect carcass data. “We wanted to start getting carcass data back on our commercial herd to help us improve breeding decisions. They are all siblings to the bulls that we sell in February.”

Chundy Land and Cattle’s annual production sale is the first week of February. Up to 60 yearling and two-year-old bulls and 60 replacement females are consigned each year. Jones explains his philosophy behind developing quality bulls. “We develop bulls the same way we got into seedstock, low and slow. We don’t creep feed, because we want to know how the cow and her bull calf are actually performing.”

Jones shares that his customers are looking for quality genetics in a bull that will keep good condition and perform for multiple breeding seasons. “We are providing genetics that can perform and do what needs done. We don’t push our bulls. They might not have the highest weaning weights, but they are true weights. Our customers can rely on knowing what they are getting.”

Rooted in Agriculture In the last year, Grant and Shawn took over the management of the operation, while Stan started taking a silent role. Grant says, “My grandparents still own cattle in the operation, and they own the land we rent.”

Grant’s mother, Julie, is actively involved with the record and bookkeeping in the operation.

In addition to the cattle and farming operation, Jones’s great-grandfather (Vinton) started an agriculture aviation business to spray crops and pasture land in the early ’50s, which grew into fertilizer and chemical sales under the following generations. Jones remembers spending his childhood summers loading airplanes and delivering fertilizer and chemicals.

Even though today the agriculture aviation and fertilizer businesses have been sold, the family still has close ties to agricultural aviation and fertilizer and chemical sales.

Stan owns and leases crop-spraying airplanes.

In 2007 the sales side of the operation was sold to Helena Chemical Company where Shawn works full-time today. Grant’s oldest sister, Morgan, works for Helena Chemical Company in Petersburg, Nebraska, and his youngest sister, Emily, is a sophomore at Concordia University where she plays basketball.

“My great-grandfather was the one who left the ranch, but I am the crazy one that decided to come back to it.” Grant laughs as he summarizes his great-grandfather’s decision to start the airplane spraying business to his decision to run the cattle operation.

He concludes, “The Simmental breed is female-oriented. It’s not that this cow had one good bull and that is all she did. It is how the cow has been doing over her lifetime, and I think that helps keep a productive and successful operation.” ◆

Expected Progeny Differences Frequently Asked Questions: Part 1 Editor’s Note: This is the first installment in a series addressing common questions about genetic prediction.

1. How do you balance EPD selection and actual phenotypes?

Expected progeny differences (EPDs) have a clear advantage over less sophisticated predictors such as raw weights and contemporary group ratios. Performance data are subject to environmental influences, such as available feed and management, and cannot be compared from one herd, or even one pasture, to another. Contemporary group ratios are more informative than actual or adjusted measurements, but they don’t take into account differences in performance from selective mating, nor do they include comparative performance data on related individuals in other herds.

EPDs are calculated using complex statistical models and methodology. The statistical models use all known information on a particular animal to calculate its EPDs. This information includes its own performance data, such as birth, weaning, and yearling weights; records on its progeny and other relatives; and genomic data on all of these animals.

Performance records are adjusted for such factors as age and sex of the animal and age of the dam prior to being evaluated. These adjustments allow performance records to be fairly compared in the analysis.

In addition, genetic merit of mates is accounted for so that animals’ progeny records are not influenced by superior or inferior mates.

The statistical analyses used for EPD calculation also account for the effects of environment (e.g., nutrition, climate, geographical location) that exist between herds. These environmental effects can be estimated due to the widespread use of artificial insemination (AI). Through AI, the same bull can be used in several herds throughout the world. These common sires create genetic links among herds with differing environments and serve as the foundation for large-scale genetic evaluation. For these reasons, animals with published EPDs within an evaluation may be directly compared regardless of their age and origin.

Finally, the genetic relationships that exist between various traits are also considered in the EPD calculations. Growth traits provide a classic example of this. Some genes affect growth only during certain stages on an animal’s life, while others affect growth in general. These genes affect two or more traits, and as a result, the traits are genetically correlated.

2. What is a ratio and how useful is it in selecting animals for their genetic merit?

A ratio is the performance on an individual animal relative to the average performance for his or her contemporaries. Suppose that 10 bull calves weighed an average of 600 pounds at weaning. One calf weighed 630 pounds, so his ratio is 105, which means he is 5% heavier than his contemporaries.

Ratio = (570 ÷ 600) x 100 = 95 Ratios can be a useful tool for within-group selection; however, they do not correct for mating bias or allow for comparisons on animals outside of the contemporary group. Use of more advanced selection tools, like EPDs, provides comparisons among all animals in the evaluation with greater accuracy.

3. When selecting easy-calving bulls, is it better to emphasize the calving ease EPD or the birth weight EPD?

Economically relevant traits (ERTs) are traits that directly generate revenue or incur costs in beef production systems. For a commercial cow-calf producer, dystocia (or calving difficulty) is what generates costs in a cow herd through direct losses of calves and their dams, increased labor costs, and lower reproductive rates among cows that have experienced dystocia. Calving ease is an ERT. Birth weight, on the other hand, is an indicator trait. It provides some information on calving ease, but by itself, doesn’t directly generate revenue or

incur costs independent of calving ease. Based on results from several research studies, birth weight accounts for only 55 to 60 percent of the genetic variation in calving ease.

This means that selection for reduced birth weight alone won’t improve calving ease as much as selecting directly on calving ease. In addition, birth weight is strongly genetically correlated with other growth traits, so reduction in birth weight is associated with lighter weights at weaning and yearling.

4. Why does my bull have a high birth weight EPD but his actual birth weight is low?

Birth weight EPDs are computed using not only the birth weight of the bull but also his own weaning and yearling weights; the birth, weaning, and yearling weights on his calves and other relatives; and the genomic data on all these animals. Weights are adjusted for known environmental effects, like sex of calf and age of dam, that do not have a genetic component, and therefore, are not transmitted from parent to offspring. For example, all things being equal, a heifer calf will weigh less than a bull calf. A

bull born to a heifer will weigh less than a bull born to a mature cow. A bull born during a drought will weigh less than a bull born during a time of abundance. Because of these environmental effects and all the other data used to compute an EPD, actual birth weight isn’t a particularly accurate measurement of a bull’s progeny’s birth weight. A bull with a low birth weight can have a high birth weight EPD and vice versa. ◆

Two incumbents and two newcomers have won election to the ASA Board of Trustees. Tim Curran, Ione, California, and Clay Lassle, Glendive, Montana, are the incumbent Trustees, returning for a second three-year term. Newly elected board members are: former Trustee J.W. Brune, Overbrook, Kansas, and Greg Walthall, Windsor, Missouri.

All four individuals were sworn in and formally seated during ASA’s Annual Meeting, January 19, in Denver.

Tim Curran, Ione, CA Tim Curran and his wife, Jill, maintain Circle Ranch, a herd of primarily SimAngus™ females in the foothills of California’s rugged, majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range. Cattle winter at lower elevations, but summer above 5,000 feet. The cow herd is comprised of 80% seedstock while 20% are commercial females. Genetics are marketed through the Beef Solutions Bull Sale, held annually on the fourth Thursday of September in conjunction with an area Angus breeder, Bruin Ranch. Curran sells 100 SimAngus bulls through the sale and another 60 SimAngus bulls by private treaty. A member of the American Simmental Association since 1992, he is a strong advocate for performance cattle, having served as a director of the California Beef Cattle Improvement Association (CBCIA) and was named CBCIA Seedstock Producer of the Year in 2010. In addition, he serves as Open Pen Show Advisor and Replacement Heifer Project Advisor at the local county fair. Prior to becoming a full-time cattleman, he spent ten years as a retail meat cutter.

Curran and Jill are the parents of two sons, Taylor and Austin.

Clay Lassle, Glendive, MT Lassle’s affiliation with Simmental cattle dates back to 1974, when the Lassle Ranch introduced the breed through AI. This past year, Clay’s daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Ryan, and their two daughters came back to the ranch full-time. Clay’s wife, Marianne, keeps the books and “keeps everything running,” and their other two children, Stephanie and Travis, help as time allows. Their herd of 300 cows ranges from purebred Simmental to SimAngus™. Genetics are sold through an annual bull sale, held the second Thursday in February, while select females and replacement heifers are sold through various outlets. Very active in Montana Simmental Association (MSA) programs, he has held the MSA offices of both president and vice president. Heavily involved in his community, he has been a 4-H leader for over 18 years; taught Sunday school classes; and served nine years on the local school board.

J.W. Brune, Overbrook, KS Brune and his wife, Carol Lyon Brune, DVM, are the owners and managers of White Star Cattle Company. They maintain both a spring- and fall-calving herd consisting of purebred to percentage cattle marketed by a variety of means, including private treaty, bull test sales, and breeder group sales. A member of both the Missouri and Kansas Simmental Associations, Brune is also active in numerous other livestock organizations. A veteran of the US Army, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Active for 32 years as a breeder of Simmental genetics, he has spent a total of 55 years breeding registered seedstock, and a previous term on the ASA Board from 2014 to 2016. Experienced in a wide range of aspects of the beef industry, he served as Executive Secretary of the Missouri Simmental Association, published the Simmental Message, was in great demand as a show judge, and has served as a mentor to countless junior members.

Greg Walthall, Windsor, MO The owner/operator of WW Cattle Company, Greg Walthall, has been active in the Simmental business for a total of 47 years. The WW cow herd currently consists of 50 head of purebred Simmental and SimAngus™ females. Through utilization of in-vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, and artificial insemination, his focus is primarily on producing and developing low-input, forage-utilizing females. Cattle are marketed through a variety of methods, including consignment sales, online, and by private treaty. Walthall calved out his first Simmental-sired calves back in 1971 and quickly became infatuated with the breed after witnessing the impact that Simmental genetics had on the family’s commercial Angus-based herd. Actively involved in the livestock industry, he has served multiple terms on the Missouri Simmental Association Board of Directors. Walthall and his wife, Pearl, an accomplished livestock photographer, are the parents of two adult children. ◆

Ron Miller, Plattsmouth, NE For more than five decades, Ron Miller has been an effective voice for the beef industry, including Simmental.

Growing up on a farm/ranch at Cambridge, Nebraska, his work with beef cattle began at a very early age. Immediately after high school in the 1960s, he established his own fitting and showing enterprise, exhibiting his own cattle along with those of his clients.

Later he branched out into other aspects of the industry, including cattle hauling and consulting. Miller terminated his trucking career almost 25 years ago, but not before he Ron Miller transported cattle into every state in the continental US and most Canadian provinces.

He has consulted on hundreds of sales across many breeds, and offered his assistance and expertise to assure smooth

running of countless local, state and national livestock expositions, including the renowned National Western in Denver and the American Royal in Kansas City.

Partial to Simmental, he has maintained a small herd of select females over the years and holds ASA membership number 3237, issued in the early years of the Association’s existence.

Miller has made countless close friends during his lifetime.

“It’s the people. The people are the primary reason I still stay involved, people I have met clear across the beef industry,” he said. “A friendly cup of coffee, conversation over breakfast or lunch — you can’t believe how much they have meant to me over the years.”

He recalls working with and for a number of producers who led the way for the breed in America. “I worked Jack Winninger’s first sale in Cody, Wyoming; I was involved with Tom Risinger and Rio Vista in Texas; had a 24-year relationship with Hudson Pines in New York, and worked Gateway Simmental’s first sale in Montana,” he added.

The criteria for recipients of this newly established distinguished award stipulates that it be presented based on “major contributions to the promotion and advancement of SimGenetics and the American Simmental Association.” ◆

Focus on Genetic Conditions

By Lilly Platts, Dr. Rachel Endecott, and Dr. Jackie Atkins Genetic conditions can be tricky to navigate but please remember, all animals carry genetic defects (including you and me).

The difference is that not all genetic conditions have been discovered, documented, and have a developed DNA test.

This article centers around the conditions with a DNA test that are tracked in the ASA’s Herdbook system called TraitTrac.

TraitTrac ASA’s genetic condition and trait tracking tool, called TraitTrac, uses DNA marker tests to provide information concerning genetic traits or conditions for animals in the ASA registry. TraitTrac indicates the status (free, at risk, or carrier) of different traits and genetic conditions based on known information on individual animals. The TraitTrac status can be viewed from the EPD/Pedigree display found in Herdbook Services under Animal Search. An animal’s genetic condition status is determined from information provided to the ASA from recognized laboratories or breed associations.

All the conditions tracked in TraitTrac are recessive, meaning an animal must inherit two copies of the mutation from the sire and the dam (sire and the dam must each be carriers in order to see an affected calf). Dominant mutations always influence an animal’s phenotype, so the dominant mutation can easily be selected for or against. Recessive mutations, however, tend to exist in a population even when harmful to the point of being lethal. This is because animals can carry the recessive gene without showing any signs of it. When carrier animals are mated to other carriers, the resulting offspring have a chance of showing symptoms. Fortunately, technology has evolved for many of these conditions so the carriers of recessive genetic conditions can be identified via DNA testing.

Punnett Square A 2 x 2 Punnett Square can be used to illustrate the outcome of various matings. In the examples, one can see the frequency of having free (0 copies of the mutation), carrier (one copy of the mutation) or affected (two copies of the mutation) progeny with various combinations of free, carrier, or affected parents. This process works for any simply inherited traits (not just genetic conditions).

For this example, “A” is the dominant and normal allele and “a” is the recessive mutation. Since the presence of “A” has complete dominance over the expression of “a” (the mutation), an animal with one copy of “A” completely hides the presence of “a.” Only animals with two copies of “a” will show the symptoms of the abnormal gene. Each square has an equal probability (1/4) of occurring. Mating a carrier to another carrier (top right) would result in a free calf 25% of the time, progeny that carry the mutation 50% of the time, and affected calves 25% of the time. Without a DNA test there is no way of distinguishing an animal with the genotype “AA” from an “Aa,” or a carrier from a free animal for this mutation.

Genetic Conditions Tracked in ASA’s TraitTrac Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH): Also called “water head,” affected calves are born dead with an extremely large cranium, with little or no brain material or spinal cord.

Recessive, lethal, affecting Angus and Angus-influenced cattle.

Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM): Known as “Curly Calf Syndrome,” AM results in stillborn calves small in size with diminished muscling, bent limbs, and twisted spines.

Recessive, lethal, affecting Angus and Angus-influenced cattle.

Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA): Also known as fawn calf syndrome, the disorder affects the connective tissue of muscles, leading to contraction of the upper limb (most obvious in the hind limbs), and looseness of the joints of the lower limbs.

Recessive, not lethal, Angus and Angus-influenced cattle.

Developmental Duplication (DD): Affected calves frequently (but not always) develop extra body parts, often limbs (most commonly, extra front legs), a condition called polymelia.

Some animals with two copies of DD may have no outward sign of this trait.

Recessive, not lethal, Angus and Angus-influenced cattle.

Tibial Hemimelia (TH): Calves are born with severe deformities including twisted rear legs (possibly missing part or all of bones), with fused joints, large abdominal hernias and/or skull deformities.

Recessive, lethal (sometimes live at birth but unable to survive long), Shorthorn-, Maine-Anjou-, and Chianina-derived cattle.

Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca (PHA): PHA-affected calves are born dead with underdeveloped lungs (pulmonary hypoplasia) and swelling caused by excessive fluid retention (anasarca).

Recessive, lethal, Shorthorn-, Maine-Anjou-,Chianina-, and Dexter-derived cattle.

Osteopetrosis (OS): Known as marble-bone, affected calves are frequently aborted 10 to 30 days early with short lower jaw and missing bone marrow.

Recessive, lethal, Red Angus- and some Angus-derived cattle.

Quick Tip: To assess the genetic defect risk (or traits) for multiple animals, on Herdbook.org go to HerdMgmt, Reports, either choose a group or use the Quick Group, and choose Genetic Summary as the report type. Choose Generate Report to see the defect risk for each animal in the group. This can be sorted multiple ways, making it easy to know which animals need testing.

Editor’s Note: This is the fourth article in a series highlighting significant women in the Simmental industry.

A pioneer for the Simbrah breed and a fervent believer in science, the late Sally Buxkemper made a lasting impact on the Simmental breed and beef industry.

S

ally Buxkemper had the right prescription in mind when she started crossing Simmental cattle with Brahman at RX Simbrah. The ranch brand was registered by Buxkemper’s grandmother, Lucy Kuhn, who went to medical school and ran a drug store. Sally chose to focus on these principles of improvement, experimentation, and advancement symbolized by her grandmother’s RX brand throughout her impactful career in the cattle business.

Women have always been a present force on many successful ranches, however Buxkemper took this involvement a step further by pursuing higher education, moving into leadership positions rarely held by a woman, running her own operation, and reaching industry milestones not often sought by women of her time.

Sally Buxkemper Buxkemper was born in West Virginia, and moved with her family to Michigan where she was raised. During this time, Buxkemper gained a love and appreciation for livestock, spending summers with her grandmother, Lucy, and her great

uncle, Stanley Kubel, on ranches in Texas. She attended Michigan State University (MSU), where she was the only woman on the livestock judging team. Transferring from MSU to Oklahoma A&M University, she became the first woman to graduate with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1954. In her studies, she also became the first woman to be certified in Artificial Insemination by the American Breeders Service.

Buxkemper went on to earn a Master’s of Science degree in Molecular Biology from the University of North Texas, studying the bovine genome. A commitment to science remained a major focus for her, acting as an early champion of crossbreeding and one of the first to fully explore its principles in her own herd. This commitment led to her being honored by the Beef Improvement Federation Pioneer Award in 2012.

Buxkemper took over the family’s ranch in the 1960’s, which became RX Simbrah. At the time, Hereford cattle were prominent and she saw a major issue in the pink eye typically going through the herd. She crossed the Hereford cows with a Brahman bull to manage this issue, which became evidence for her belief in crossbreeding to eliminate negative traits in breeds. With the principles of heterosis she had been studying in mind, she soon started crossing Brahman cattle with Simmental, being one of the first to develop Simbrah cattle. In her role as a seedstock producer, Buxkemper utilized science to its fullest potential. Early on, she saw the benefit of DNA testing and was an early proponent of removing genetic defect risk in herds through testing.

Buxkemper served several terms on the ASA Board of Trustees, and frequently contributed writing for ASA about science and beef cattle.

She was honored with numerous awards and distinguishments, but even upon reaching these milestones she continued to focus on raising cattle. Buxkemper passed in 2017, and her commitment to improving the Simmental breed continues to inspire and contribute to the efforts of those in the Simmental industry. ◆

Just Focus We rarely expect the moments when life chooses to send us a little message. It might have been an opportunity to do a truly charitable act around the Christmas season that nobody ever witnessed or gave you credit. It might be the extra patience and ckemp@simmgene.com kindness we show to an aging parent. Or it may be a simple chat with an old friend at the grocery store or church. For me, one such moment took place in 30 minutes spent meeting and learning from ASA member Chanley Carter, Marianna, FL. Carter and I had reason to cross paths at a recent event at Southern Cattle Company. Of course, we had the expected “cow talk.” I got his take on some bulls and we discussed his enthusiasm for novel tools such as the IGS Feeder Profit Calculator™. But, then the conversation turned to what I believe providence truly planned for us to discuss — the bigger picture of ASA’s role in the beef business and one’s basic approach to the challenges and opportunities that life presents us.

I wouldn’t be so bold as to believe I should define another individual’s view of the beef business. And so, I won’t try to speak for Carter. I am confident he’d be eager to share his thoughts with you personally, and, if you have the good fortune, I urge you to make that happen. But, one thing was made clear — Chanley Carter is a true fan and proponent of the evolution that the American Simmental Association has experienced in the last 20 years. The tough love approach instituted by Dr. Jerry Lipsey, former Executive Vice President, was a front and center topic of our half-hour together. Self-awareness and science were, and are, hallmarks of that approach.

Carter also recognized to fully implement the change necessary in the late ’90s and early 2000s that it took folks like Marty Ropp who was willing to take a risk and shake things up.

To this day, tough love is still a basic tenet of what ASA does and how it does it. Dr. Wade Shafer, the current Executive Vice President, has continued to lead the ASA team down an unparalleled path set in motion some 20 years ago, a path near and dear to Carter. The core guiding principle of such an approach is to be honest, forthright, and straight with all those with whom we work. In our line of work that boils down to the use of credible science, presenting the best genetic predictions in the beef business, and helping commercial producers find genetics with a high degree of profit potential. Period. When we stray from that approach we delve into smarmy areas of bias, hyperbole, and clouding the facts. Those are exactly the things Lipsey strove to rid us of and we hold fast to the lessons he taught.

Before my meeting with Carter came to an end, he had one more lesson to teach. And at the end of the day it was the most powerful of lessons. The story started with a small weather anomaly you may have heard of, Hurricane Michael. And to be clear, the remnants of the storm were apparent throughout the region. The devastation was something to behold, even though I was seeing it two months later. But, Carter’s lesson wasn’t meteorological. And it wasn’t whining or asking why.

You and I have seen the news, talked to colleagues and friends, maybe even know family who experienced this massive event — we at least have some sense of the sadness of the story. But again, that was not the lesson being taught that day. The lesson was more timeless and it spoke more about us as people than about a specific tough event at a specific moment in time.

The lesson was one of attitude. How our reaction to any event speaks louder than the event itself.

I heard accounts of people reaching out in a whole host of ways to help others. I was told of various stories of resilience and toughness in the wake of the mess.

And not once, not a single time during my minutes in this “classroom” did I hear anything close to whining or woe is me. Rather, I saw a man, an experienced agriculturist and an adaptable cattleman, who wasn’t complaining but was rather seeking ways to make things better for those around him. It is attitude. We decide how we are going to tackle each downturn and how we are going to approach life’s challenges.

Since, I have found myself examining my own attitude. I encourage you to do the same. Most of us are blessed to never have to experience such tragedy, but we all have our own trials and tribulations. And we get to decide the lessons those teach and how they form us.

But, even more, I’d suggest it is the attitude we possess about day-to-day things that will ultimately form our approach in those more magnified events. How we act and react at the office, on the ranch, around the dinner table, or, maybe most telling, when no one else is watching — those are what shape us. And like it or not, that is the shape others will see. That is how they remember you and me.

A Southern cattleman planted a seed for 2019. Maybe each of us should whine less and resist the temptation to point fingers more. Worry less about how others are falling short or how someone else should do something for me, and instead, focus on what we are doing or not doing. Focus on how we can shape our families. Focus on doing little positive things in our community. Focus less on speaking and more on listening. Focus less on selling, and instead more on ensuring we produce genetics that provide a bull buyer’s family a better chance at making a living for the next ten years. Just Focus. ◆

To cover ASA’s cost, members will be charged $1.00 per blood card, $2.00 per sample pull, and research fees ($1/minute) associated with DNA work outside the regular procedures, for instance misidentified samples or samples showing up to the laboratory without proper paperwork.

Due to delays in transit times, the ASA will now automatically ship kits via 3-day FedEx, charged to the member account. Members can request to use US Postal Service, but the default is for FedEx 3-day shipments as of, October 1, 2018.

Genetic Conditions Panel The Genetic Conditions Panel includes seven genetic defects tracked by the American Simmental Association. These defects are: AM, NH, CA, DD, OS, PHA, and TH. The Genetic Conditions Panel is available with GGP-LD or GGP-HD testing, and the add-on price for the panel is $25. If a member orders any one of the genetic conditions on the panel with a GGP-LD or GGP-HD test, the entire panel will automatically be tested. If the animal is not undergoing a GGP-LD or GGP-HD test, the price is $25 per defect tested. If requesting the genetic conditions panel after a GGP-LD or GGP-HD test is complete, the testing will be billed at single defect rates, which is $25 per defect.

ASA Requesting Cow Weights The American Simmental Association is seeking to increase the flow of mature cow weights with body condition scores into its database. Cow weights provide valuable information for use in our genetic evaluation system. The best time to weigh and condition score your cows is around weaning or pregnancy diagnosis.

By Rachel Dickson, Saint Louisville, OH Deciding to run for the AJSA Board of Trustees was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life in terms of preparing me for the future and giving back to the Association that has made me the person I am today. Growing up, my dream was always to become an AJSA Trustee, and I was always looking up to those members as role models. I remember even as a nine-year-old at the National Classic in Sedalia, Missouri, looking up to those individuals as they excited me about becoming more involved in the AJSA. Having just turned 17, I am the youngest current member of the AJSA Board of Trustees. This was a bit intimidating at first, but it has made me more responsible and has taught me many valuable life lessons. In the beginning when I applied to be a Trustee, many told me that maybe I should wait a year and that maybe I was too young to be traveling the country alone. Looking back, I am so glad that I didn’t listen to those suggestions, as this was the best decision I’ve ever made.

My main goal for the rest of my term as an AJSA Trustee is to inspire young people to be involved in the AJSA as past board members have done for me. This is a great passion of mine, as I have two younger sisters who I try to be a role model for every day, not only in AJSA but also in life. The future of our Association will be in the hands of our youngest members in only a few short years, so we must work together to keep them involved and keep our Association and breed one of the most prestigious in the country.

To all the AJSA members out there, my word of advice is to never let someone tell you that you are too young to follow your dreams. Do what you love, and never let anyone or anything get in the way of that. If you are 16 or older and thinking about applying to become an AJSA Trustee, I truly do recommend it. It is a life-changing experience of traveling the country, inspiring young people, and representing the best breed with the best members. This Association has given me so much, and it feels amazing to know that I am giving back as others have done before me.

STATE SCENE North Carolina to Compost Hogs, Poultry The North Carolina Department of Agriculture plans to compost 5,500 hogs and 4.2 million turkeys and chickens that died from flood waters sparked by Hurricane Florence. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help fund the latest project, just as the agency did when Hurricane Matthew killed more than 1.8 million birds statewide two years ago.

North Carolina was the first state to request financial assistance from FEMA for such a project, although the composting process has been used in other states. That list includes Minnesota, which composted more than nine million birds killed in an avian influenza outbreak in 2015.

California Sets Space Requirements for Farm Animals California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 12 in Tuesday’s mid-term election, establishing specific space requirements for farm animals raised for food. It was the second time in a decade that voters in the Golden State passed a statewide animal welfare initiative.

Former Ag Secretary Dies

Darla Aegerter joined the American Simmental Association as the Youth Programs and ASF Foundation Manager. Aegerter’s main responsibilities are to coordinate the AJSA Regional and National Classics, other assigned youth events, work closely with the AJSA Board, and become immersed with the American SimmentalSimbrah Foundation as liaison with the Foundation Board and supporting their fundraising activities. Aegerter has an extensive background in the purebred cattle business, including operating her own livestock photography business, managing livestock advertising sales, being the Nebraska State Fair Beef Superintendent, and assisting with special projects at the American Hereford Association and Hereford Youth Foundation.

Aegerter Aegerter resides in Seward, Nebraska, with her husband, Jeff. They have a son, Kane, who is a sophomore at Oklahoma State University. Together they operate a small purebred cattle herd and market cattle in an annual production sale.

The entire family has been very involved in youth cattle organizations, and Aegerter realizes the value in educating young people and providing great family experiences.

Aegerter looks forward to meeting and growing future relationships with everyone in the Simmental family. She especially embraces the challenge of working to further develop, grow, and strengthen both the outstanding AJSA program and enhancing the efforts of the American Simmental-Simbrah Foundation. Aegerter assumed her duties on February 4.

Bob Bergland, who was President Jimmy Carter’s secretary of agriculture, has died at 90 years old. Bergland led the Agriculture Department at a time that included protest in 1979 by farmers who drove their tractors to Washington DC, Bergland demanding higher price supports. The farmers broke into the Department of Agriculture building, briefly occupying Berglund’s office.

Zimmerman Elected to USDA Beef Board Penny Zimmerman, One Penny Ranch, Foley, MN, was recently selected to serve on the USDA Cattlemen’s Beef Board. Zimmerman, former president of the American National CattleWomen, has been a part of the ASA since the mid-70s.

A total of 35 members were announced as the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board to serve 3-year terms.

The program’s goal is to maintain and expand domestic and foreign markets and uses for beef and beef products.

Engebretson was a member of the ASA since the 1980s. FDA Sets Biotech Action Plan

The USDA’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) will conduct a review of a proposal to move the Economic Research Service (ERS) and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) out of the capital. The OIG also will review Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue’s decision to move ERS into the Office of the Chief Economist.

The OIG is responding to a request by members of the House for a closer examination of the moves, according to a joint news release posted on the lawmaker’s website.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has outlined steps the agency will take through 2020 to foster innovation in plant and animal biotechnology applications.

In a joint statement this week, the FDA said the FDA Plant and Animal Biotechnology Innovation Plan will advance FDA policy priorities, clarify the agency’s science-and risk based approach for product developers, and eliminate unnecessary barriers to future innovation in plant and animal biotechnology.

Shoppers Prefer to Buy Groceries Online grocery shopping is making inroads but remains a small niche in the $800 billion industry, generating less than 5% of sales, according to new research. A quest for convenience over price shopping led to a 2% decline in sales at traditional grocers while small-format retailers such as dollar stores, drug outlets and value food stores notched gains of 2% to 4% yearover-year.

Online grocery sales grew 4% from last year, but the number of online food and beverage buyers, defined as those who make six or more purchases a year, is still just 17%. Only 38% of consumers have shopped in the format even once, and less than half of them (44%) say they are loyal to the format.

Meat Processors in Tight Labor Market Attracting and retaining a productive and stable workforce has always been a challenge for the poultry and meat processing industry. Rural locations can make it hard to attract office workers and difficult to retain workers on the processing floor.

Tightening borders in an industry built on immigrant labor, and baby boomers (10,000 of which reach retirement age daily), the labor market is becoming increasingly tight.

Increasingly, meat processors will find themselves competing with other industries for their share of this shrinking labor pool.

Customers Stay Home During Holidays Heading into the holidays, US consumers tend to consume more food at home in November and December — in reverse order of consumption the rest of the year, according to a new report from USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS).

The ERS Food Expenditures Series noted that monthly food-at-home expenditures (for food sold at retail, primarily) rose in November, accompanied by a decline in foodaway-from-home spending. Spending in both categories increases in December, but last year, food-at-home spending still topped away-from-home.

The Jobs That Go Begging The percentage of jobs in the meat processing industry that are filled by foreign-born employees is twice that of the US population as a whole — about 35% of meat industry employment, compared with 17% nationwide, according to an analysis by the Migration Policy Institute.

Capacity in the processing industry is expanding rapidly, while immigration flows are a fraction of what they were in the 1980s into the 2000s. When processors face shortterm and long-term hiring and retention issues, immigrants and immigration policy are inevitably a large problem.

Quality, Convenience Outrank Price in Survey Consumers are looking for higher-quality products and greater convenience during their holiday grocery shopping experiences, according to a recent survey.

The State of Grocery Retail Report found that consumers prefer to shop at food retailers that offer the best quality over stores with the lowest price tags, with 31% citing quality as the main concern. The survey also noted that consumers are demanding convenience and a seamless experience when they shop.

QSR Growth Top Full-service Restaurant The number of US quick service restaurants (QSRs) grew at a faster pace than the expansion of full-service restaurants in the 15-year period between 2000 and 2015, according to USDA. QSRs — where consumers order food and pay at a counter — totaled more than 340,000 in 2015, up 20% from the approximately 285,000 units operating in 2000.

A major driver of the expansion was the emergence of fast casual restaurants, the QSR subset that provides counter service along with perceived higher menu item quality and ingredients.

Online Meat Shopping Jumps Online ordering of fresh meat is up sharply from a year ago, according to a new study, but a quarter of shoppers singled out those purchases as falling short on quality and freshness.

Buying meat online increased 40% from a year ago, and purchases of deli meats and cheeses jumped 50%, the study found. Among other goods in the fresh department, orders for produce climbed 50%, seafood rose 46%, bakery increased 36%, and prepared food and meals were up 27%.

Lawsuit Takes Aim at Label Claims The Animal Welfare Institute has sued USDA for failing to mandate third-party audits of food label claims such as “humane” and “sustainable”.

The animal activist group, in a complaint filed in US District Court for the District of Columbia, accuses USDA of unreasonable delay in responding to the organization’s 2014 “petition for rulemaking.” The petition asked the agency to require independent certification of animal raising claims including “animal compassionate” and “raised with care.” ◆ February 2019

CUTTING EDGE Study Links Vegetarianism, Depression A new report outlining recent research on the psychology of vegetarianism may have uncovered a possible connection between depression and people who live mainly on a plant based diet. Researchers from Cornell University noted that the level of research on the psychology of vegetarianism now includes identity issues, social experiences and culture.

A 2018 French study found that people who gave up animalrelated food groups had a more than two-and-a-half-times greater risk to suffer from depression. A 2007 study found that 30% of 14,000 vegetarian women experienced depression in the previous 12 months.

Drug will Reduce Ammonia Emissions The US Food and Drug Administration has announced it has approved Elanco’s Experior, the first animal drug that when fed to beef cattle under specific conditions results in less ammonia gas released as a byproduct of their waste.

Studies of Experior indicated the product partially reduces ammonia gas emissions from manure from an individual animal or a pen of animals in semi-controlled conditions in enclosed housing. Multiple studies showed that Experior is safe to feed to beef cattle, and that meat from cattle treated with Experior is safe for people to eat.

New Report Dwells on Foodborne Illness The most common sources of foodborne pathogens causing illness are widely varied and, for most pathogens not meat, according to a new report from the Interagency Food Safety Analytics Collaboration (IFSAC). The study found that vegetable row crops, dairy products and fruits were the highest linked to foodborne illnesses.

The report focuses on estimates for 2016 for Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, and Campylobacter using multi-year outbreak surveillance data. It is the result of collaboration among the Center for Disease Control, the Food & Drug Administration and USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Chrysanthemum Oil Promising as Antimicrobial A new study suggests that chrysanthemum essential oil (CHEO) incorporated into chitosan nanofibers (CS/NF) has strong antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities in beef and holds promise for applications in beef packing.

Researchers tested the antibacterial mechanism of CHEO nanofibers against Listera monocytogenes in beef, which resulted in an inhibition rate of 99.91%, 99.97%, and 99.95% at 4°C, 12°C, 25°C, respectively after seven days.

Antibiotics Use Declines A new FDA report shows that the sale of antibiotics in foodproducing animals declined by 33% between 2016 and 2017, signalling a significant reduction in the spread of antimicrobialresistant pathogens in humans.

The reported decline of 41% in the domestic sales and distribution of antibiotics for use in animals since 2015. The latest figures are 28% below the data for 2009, when the first sales/distribution report was issued. ◆

CORPORATE REPORT Brazil Opens More Inquiries into JBS Brazilian securities regulator CVM has opened new administrative inquiries into facts that JBS owners and executives revealed to prosecutors during testimony in 2017, the agency recently announced. The inquiries are the second stage of investigations that could lead to formal charges by the securities regulator.

There are now six administrative proceedings under way at CVM, four administrative inquiries, and three sanctioning proceedings with formal indictments related to JBS controllers.

Only one case, where CVM absolved former JBS Investor Relations Officer Jeremiah O’Callaghan of charges that he failed to question brothers Wesley and Joesley Batista about their plea bargain deals in 2017, has been judged and concluded by CVM

Upscale Steakhouse Chain Expands Steakhouse brand’s Ruths Chris and Texas de Brazil are adding restaurants in new markets as fine-dining chains benefit from lower beef costs.

Ruth’s Chris has announced it opened its newest location in Reno, NV, a 240-seat restaurant with the Silver Legacy Casino.

The chain, with more than 150 locations worldwide, also opened two restaurants in New Jersey and plans new locations in Columbus, OH, in 2019, and Oklahoma City in 2020.

Unilever Buys Dutch Vegetarian Company Joining the ranks of major companies betting on the up-andcoming meat analogue technologies, Unilever recently announced in a news release that it is acquiring Dutch company The Vegetarian Butcher for an undisclosed amount.

In the release, the company said it is responding to consumer demand for more vegetarian and vegan meals. The Vegetarian Butcher makes such items as vegetarian meatballs in various sauces, and NoChicken and NoBeef items such as nuggets and “chunks” for using in recipes. Its products are sold in more than 4,000 locations in 17 countries.

Yosemite Meat to Relocate, Expand Operation Modesto, California-based Yosemite Meat plans to move its operations at the end of January about 30 miles to a new facility in Stockton, California, where it will have more room for future expansion. A company executive shared that the company does not plan to lay off any employees; rather, their jobs will move to the new location, and the current facility in Modesto will at some point be reopened for future use.

Yosemite Meat is a specialty meat processor and distributor that delivers custom beef, pork and poultry products to diverse customers, with expertise in the Asian and Hispanic markets.

The company is also changing its name to Modesto Foods. ◆

INTERNATIONAL Israeli Food Tech Claims First Cell-cultured Steak

Japan May Remove Restrictions on US Beef

Israel-based Aleph Farms said it has produced the first cellgrown steak with texture, flavor and shape of beef muscle tissue. The food tech startup called the product a breakthrough in cell-cultured meat technology because it replicates the structure of beef muscle tissue steak.

Alph Farms uses six technologies that allow it to drop the production costs of the meat, including approaches related to an animal-free growth medium to nourish the cells, and bioreactors, which are the tanks in which the tissue grows.

Japan is considering lifting its ban on the import of US beef from cattle 30 months of age and older, according to news reports. Facing escalating US pressure to remove the restriction, Japan’s food safety commission is working on a plan for removing the ban.

The ban is a modified version of a restriction first put into place in 2003 in response to concerns about bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

Meat Companies Impact China Brazil’s JBS Group and Denmark’s Danish Crown have agreed to a collective $1.9-billion deal to supply Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group’s Win Chain. Win Chain will purchase $1.5 billion of products from JBS between China and Brazil. And Win Chain will purchase up to $400 million of product from Danish Crown’s first direct-to-consumer step into China.

As part of the partnership, Win Chain will provide JBS with Chinese market channel sales, cold chain distribution, commodity brand co-established plans, and big data support.

South Korean Trade Mission Makes Gains A recent four-day trade mission designed to boost US food exports to South Korea scored some gains for US exports, even though other challenges remain.

Talks between representatives from USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service and Korean businesses resulted in about $3 million in short-term sales of US agriculture products. The businessto-business meetings also generated deals worth at least $30 million over a 12-month period. ◆

Reporting Udder Scores to ASA

By Dr. Jackie Atkins and Emme Troendle In the last year, the ASA added udder scores as an optional phenotype on Herdbook. The best time to assess udder scores is within 24 hours of calving, preferably by the same person. There are two scores to record, one for udder suspension and one for teat length. If variation exists between the quarters of the udder, record the weakest quarter.

Here are the Beef Improvement Federation guidelines for proper udder scoring:

Udder Suspension and Teat Size Scores.

Unsound udders and teats are associated with reduced productive life and inferior calf performance.

The scoring system described below is designed to help producers evaluate differences in udder and teat quality of beef cows.

Udder suspension and teat size scores are numerical values that reflect differences in udder and teat quality.

Udder suspension scores are subjective assessments of udder support and range from 9 (very tight) to 1 (very pendulous; not desired). Teat size scores are subjective assessments of teat length and circumference and range from 9 (very small) to 1 (very large; not desired).

How to Report Udder Scores on Herdbook In Herdbook, members record a two-digit number for udder and teat scores. The first digit represents the udder suspension, and the second digit represents the teat size. For example, if a cow has an intermediate udder suspension score of 5 and a large teat size score of 3, the member would enter 53 into the udder score column on Herdbook.

In the October 2018 edition of this column, I focused on the alignment of anniversaries being celebrated in 2018 for the ASA and NAILE Pinnacle Fullblood Simmental Show. Fifty years for the ASA and ten for the Pinnacle should make all of us who are dedicated to the Simmental breed very proud.

While I predicted that the 2018 NAILE had the makings of a phenomenal year for Simmentals, time has proven that to be a fact. Incredible best describes the set of cattle on display to represent our Simmental breed, highlighting 50 years in getting us to this point! The hard work and dedication of all interested parties over those years has gotten us here. But we shouldn’t rest because the next 50 years will be more challenging. Meeting that challenge will require even greater creativity, commitment, passion, and spirit than that set in motion by our founders. It is up to us!

This Fleckvieh Forum column appearing in the Register allows those of us in the fullblood Simmental segment of our breed to update the industry concerning that segment. In 2007, I could never have predicted the success we would have with the creation of a separate show for fullblood Simmentals at the NAILE. But a remarkable success it has been and continues to be, thanks to so many of our breeders and their families and friends. The 2018 NAILE Pinnacle, Challenge Cup and Fleck Effect shows were, without question, the largest and best ever.

The quality of the cattle, stall area displays, cattle fitting and grooming and overall presentation of fullblood genetics has won the acclaim of many in the barn. We have come a long way from our humble beginnings.

By Larry H. Maxey In that beginning, it was my hope that the model created for the NAILE would be repeated at other shows across the country. Thanks to Dr. Jason Gress, Nikki Gress, and Dr. Mikell Davis of Mississippi, a similar program has succeeded at the Dixie National. And, some have been successful at the county fair level as well. It is my hope that others will take up the challenge and establish shows at the other major venues in the US and Canada. I know there are those who disagree with the “exhibition” of livestock and they certainly have that right. But I will end with a statement I made during comments to a large crowd of Simmental enthusiasts gathered in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada, a dozen years ago that set me on the path that is now ten years of history at the NAILE: “We cannot expect people to knock down our gates to see our cattle. We have to take the cattle to them!”

To help you plan, here are some items which may hold up registration for a length of time:

You enter the data, work through any errors, pay the fees; registration will be completed in minutes. No priority handling fee, no hold-ups (unless there are errors or payment is needed) and can be completed any time of the day or night.

1. DNA / Genetic Abnormalities / Parental Validation / AI Sire / ET Requirements: DNA Testing is a standard process without any options to expedite this service. a. Normal DNA Testing: 3-4 weeks for results. Sample failure and misidentified samples doubles this time. b. DNA kit paperwork requests: 48-hour turnaround 2. Non-Compliance: Total Herd Enrollment breeders: there is a deadline each year where the previous year’s calf data must be submitted. You’ll be notified of the dams in your herd which need calf data or a reason the cow didn’t calve when you go online to submit new registrations. Until this information is completed, no new data will be accepted.

3. Foundation Registration: Sires registered with other breed associations MUST be registered with ASA prior to registering progeny. Other breed dams may be registered with ASA as a Foundation, but it is optional, not mandatory. Normal processing is 10-12 business days (error-free, payment received, DNA requirements completed).

4. Breeder Signature: If the owner of the dam at the time of conception is different than the person applying for registration, ASA requires the breeder to sign off on the calf you are registering. Make sure the breeder signs the calf’s registration application or breeding information is supplied on the transfer of the dam. If the dam was sold with the calf at side, make sure the seller has registered and transferred the calf to you.

5. Non-payment: Payment is required to complete registrations.

Interesting fact: 90.8% of the animal data is already submitted electronically through Herdbook Services!

Why the encouragement to go online and register the animal yourself?

1. Registrations and transfers needed faster than the normal turnaround will be charged $50 per animal. This $50 fee can be avoided by going online and completing the registration or transfer yourself.

2. Complete the registration online and if you need it mailed by FedEx or UPS send a request via email (simmental@simmgene.com) for special shipping. Note: there is a charge for shipping unless mailed by regular US Mail. Plan ahead and avoid those charges.

Need more encouragement to register online?

1. Normal processing (registration) on paper applications for SimGenetic animals (once received in the ASA office): 3-7 business days (error-free and payment received) depending on the time of year — holiday season could extend turnaround.

2. Mailing services: within three days of processing (registration) plus the length of time for the US Mail service.

Incentives for Cooperators

u Free semen from the industries top herd sire prospects. u All cows in herd will be put in ASA’s database which will provide EPDs for every female. This allows you to make selection and culling decisions within the cowherd based on EPDs. u You have the option to retain all or some of the females produced from the program. u ASA will pay $60/AI sired carcass that is harvested. u Cooperators will get carcass data back on all the calves harvested through the program. u A portion of the CMP calves have feed intake collected and records shared with the cooperators.

How does it work?

u ASA assigns all matings in a random fashion so the test produces unbiased, accurate results. u ASA will work to provide bulls that fit the general criteria of your herd.

However ASA must use only bulls that are enrollled in the program. u ASA will use several sires per contemporary group to provide more accurate test results. u Only bulls with high calving ease EPDs are used on heifers.

Qualifications 1. All cows are individually identified along with birth year and approximate breed makeup.

2. Collect birth weights, calving ease scores, and weaning weights on CMP sired calves.

3. Beneficial but not required — have a current AI program established 4. Must commit to collecting carcass data.
