AXEL SCHOENERT ARCHITECTES AGENCY
Axel Schoenert founded the Franco-German agency Axel Schoenert Architectes with Zsofia Varnagy, an interior architect, in 1999 in Paris. With a multicultural team, the agency develops its activities in France and internationally, in the fields of architecture, interior architecture, and design.
Its priority is to promote an eclectic vision of its work, emphasize the diversity of projects, and develop expertise in new constructions as well as complex renovations. The agency is recognized and awarded for its hotel achievements, innovative office projects with iconic performance and design, and coworking projects.
Resolutely detached from a specific style, effects, and trends, each project is studied as a new page to be written. The starting point of this work is the place itself, its history, its culture. This anchoring will define the core of the project, where interior architecture and design are as important as architecture and coexist in perfect harmony. About forty female and male collaborators at the agency share a culture of design combined with construction.
In accordance with the future bioclimatic Local Urban Plan (PLU) and fully aware of the new challenges of sustainable development, in the rehabilitation or conversion of old buildings as well as in new construction, the agency is committed to offering innovative and adapted urban architectural solutions.
It prioritizes in its projects the reversibility of buildings, the reasoned management of its construction sites, obtaining the most demanding environmental certifications and labels, the creation of green and accessible outdoor spaces, and opts for low-carbon solutions to design, renovate, and build the city of tomorrow.
With its projects, the agency has found itself at the center of urban renewal. Among the most recent stand out the complex restructuring and new wood structure construction of the former RTL headquarters, 22 rue Bayard. Awarded at the SIATI prize as well as at the 2022 Construction Trophies in the tertiary building category, the project also received the mention «best responsible project.» Other notable projects include the UFO building hosting the Leboncoin Group’s offices in the heart of Sentier; the 102 Charonne project, a 15,000 m² real estate complex with an ambitious landscape program to bring nature into the 11th arrondissement of Paris; 5 Wework locations in Paris, including the largest in Europe (20,000 m²) located on Avenue de France; and the construction of Canvas-Lilo, a next-generation student residence with 644 beds. Leveraging its expertise in hotel programs, Axel Schoenert Architectes delivered the first hotel in France of the German brand 25 Hours opposite Gare du Nord in Paris, as well as the first two MEININGER group hotels in France. The agency also designed the concept and interior architecture of the 4* hotel of The Pleyel Tower and its conference center, which opened in summer 2024.

ARCHITECTES ENDOWMENT FUND - ESIKA
Axel Schoenert architectes launches its endowment fund: Esika (tree goddess). A meaningful name for the agency, which is committed to protecting trees and developing the wood industry. This new building is in line with the agency’s commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its projects, while at the same time designing work and living spaces focused on the well-being of occupants and adapted to new climatic and health challenges.
Concern for the environment is increasingly present in our lives, and the world of architecture is not uninvolved to it. The 21st century is shaping up to be the century in which the use of structural wood takes off, thanks to this environmental awareness that motivates the use of natural, renewable, reusable and recyclable materials. Axel Schoenert Architects is fully aware of the new challenges of sustainable development, whether in the rehabilitation or conversion of old buildings or in new construction, and is committed to proposing innovative and appropriate architectural and urban solutions. In its projects, it favors the reversibility of buildings, the rational management of construction sites, the most demanding environmental certifications and labels, the creation of green and accessible outdoor spaces, and opts for lowcarbon solutions to design, renovate and build the city of tomorrow. Through the creation of its Esika endowment fund, Axel Schoenert architectes has placed sustainable development and research into wood development at the heart of its actions.
The aim of the endowment fund is to support and develop public-interest initiatives of a scientific nature, contributing to the protection of the natural environment and biodiversity, particularly by promoting the wood industry.
Esika’s actions aim to take into account the entire life cycle of wood, from planting to exploitation. Esika’s aim is to become a major contributor to the circular economy, a concept that is essential today for the preservation of our planet. These actions will be carried out or supported mainly in France and, on an ancillary basis, abroad, within the limits set by the applicable legal provisions. The Endowment Fund will contribute to the research and development of best practices in low-carbon and/or ecological transition.
To this end, the Endowment Fund will support and lead the realization of one or more missions of general interest implemented directly by it or by other non-profit organizations, and in particular :
• Actions to promote and develop the timber industry, including actions aimed at the public concerned, training, and the organization of events, conferences and symposia to promote timber construction.
• Any action to promote development and research in the timber industry. These actions will be carried out or supported mainly in France and, on an ancillary basis, abroad, within the limits set by the applicable legal provisions.
• The development of all innovative and publicinterest initiatives to promote the timber industry.
• Actions to contribute to reforestation.
• Cooperation with other organizations, particularly universities and research organizations.
• The publication of any analysis, work, thesis, nomenclature, etc. within the scope of its purpose.

• Planting / replanting: by directly supporting operations to (re)afforest French forests. Encourage innovation: by supporting research into innovative techniques and practices using wood.
• The distribution of research grants for projects falling within the scope of the Endowment Fund.
• And other actions of general interest related to the purpose of the Endowment Fund.
The President’s message
“The ESIKA endowment fund is an extension of my personal convictions and the work carried out by the architectural firm I founded 24 years ago. For many years now, I’ve been trying to pass on to my colleagues my attachment to ecology and the urgent need to act to defend our planet, which human activity is destroying at an unprecedented rate.
Today’s and tomorrow’s companies must be part of a sustainable development policy if they are to survive and not deteriorate their own environment. Today, I believe that it is still possible to curb this massive destruction of nature on a planetary scale, and that a survival reflex will be put in place among the greatest number of people. While profit remains one of the company’s objectives, it must certainly no longer be just a goal. However, financial resources are still essential for the realization of projects in favor of the ecological transition.ESIKA endowment fund therefore proposes to be one of the vehicles responsible for redistributing part of the economic gains towards nature. It’s the multiplication of good will and the involvement of as many people as possible that will change things. I’m looking forward to your projects and I can’t wait to get started on this wonderful adventure.” Axel Schoenert - founder of ESIKA
