GOMAL, or Gomal, the name of a swash of Afghanistan, and of a mountain Gomal pass on the Dera Ismail Khan border of the Northwest Frontier Province of British India. The Gomal swash, one of the most important gutters in Afghanistan, rises in the unexplored regions to the southeast of Ghazni. Its principal influent is the Zhob.

Within the limits of British home, the Gomal forms the boundary between the North-West Frontier Province and Baluchistan, and more or less between the Pathan and Baluch races. The Gomal pass is the most important pass on the Indian frontier between the Khyber and the Bolan.

It connects Dera Ismail Khan with the Gomal vale in Afghanistan, and has formed for centuries the outlet for the provide trade.

To the south of the Hindu Raj lie the rugged basins of the Panjkora, Swat, and Kandia gutters.

The Lower Himalayas and theSub-Himalayas are positioned in the eastern part of the fiefdom and form definite ranges broken by hilly country and small plains.

The region is seismically active, with frequent mild to moderate temblors. In 2005 a severe earthquake centered in near Azad Kashmir killed thousands.

History In ancient times, the state of Gandhara enthralled the Vale of Peshawar and touching areas. This area was important because of its strategic position at the eastern end of the Khyber Pass.

Gandhara was adjoined by the Persian Achaemenian dynasty in the early 6th century BCE and remained a Persian satrapy until 327 BCE. The region also passed consecutively under Greek, Indian, Indo-Bactrian, Sakan, Parthian, and Kushan rule.

Muslim rule was first brought to the region by a former Turkish slave- dogface (mamlūk) named Sebüktigin, who gained control of Peshawar in 988 CE. His son, Mahmud of Ghazna, raided northern India several times between 1001 and 1027 and brought a large area of the presentday fiefdom into the boundaries of the Ghaznavid dynasty.

Beginning in the late 12th century The region was held consecutively by the Ghūrid sultanate, by colourful Muslim Afghan dynasties, and also by the Mughal dynasty.

After the irruption of the Iranian sovereign Nādir Shah in 1738, the home remained under the loose control of the Afghan Durrānī clan. Beginning about 1818, overrunning Sikhs from the Punjab region of India decreasingly secured control of the frontier home until the coming of the British in 1849.

The north western frontier areas were adjoined to India British after the Alternate Sikh War (1848 – 49). The homes thenceforward formed a part of the Punjab until the fiefdom, also known as North-West Frontier Province, was created in 1901. After Pakistan attained independence in 1947, the region continued to live as a separate Pakistani fiefdom. Still, the occupants of the ethnical homes, the westernmost area along the Afghanistan border, weren't made subject to the Pakistani legal law.

During the 1980s the fiefdom was submersed by Afghan deportees seeking shelter from the Soviet occupation of their country. The ethnical areas, formally designated as the Federally Administered Ethnical Areas (FATA) from 1970 until 2018, were also a major staging area for mujahideen fighters entering Afghanistan (see Afghan War).

Following the collapse of the Taliban governance in Afghanistan in 2001, the ethnical areas came a retreat for Taliban and mujahideen fighters.
