oleJenest & Stone offered me the opportunity to gain experience on real life construction projects and to sharpen my rendering skills. Key objectives of the internship was for me to learn responsibility professionalism within context of the landscape architecture profession. I provided day-to-day support in various phases of design projects,

During my internship, I prepared due diligence & site analysis exhibits, developed base maps and design exhibits utilizing Autodesk Civil 3D and ArcGIS, conducted site observations of projects under construction, prepared and developed conceptual designs, including planting palette selection, planting plans, greenway corridor studies, street cross sections, presentation exhibits and renderings.

Other tasks involved construction administration, including submittals, and material/finish selection, prepare and develop firm plant library, marketing renderings, marketing submittals, and general assistance with design research and development.

CAROMONT HOSPITAL

Nancy Graham, an associate landscape architect at CJS worked closely with me on this project. We explored different walkway dimensions leading to the entrance of the Caromont Hospital.

Cross section A proposes a 6 feet wide walkway to allow a greater landscaping area buffer between vehicles and users.

Cross section B proposes an 8 feet wide walkway for better circulation and comfort among patients and visitors walking towards the entrance of the Hospital.

Part of my contribution to the project was render the illustrative landscape plan as a deliverable for a client deadline.

CJS principal and director of design, Marshall Giles, worked closely with me in re-aligning the Walker Branch Trail. Both the Walker Branch Trail Alignment and Survey Exhibit deliverables were produced using ArcGIS Pro.

S

tudy abroad program within the University of Washington led by Daniel Winterbottom and Luka Jelusic from HDK-Stenby, a design school Sweden offered me an experience of a lifetime.

As part of our design process, we worked with the local Syrian community to create a community garden intending to improve their well-being, alleviate their stresses of integration and connect them with the broader community of Dals Långed. The project’s goal was to create a deeper level of trust, connection and mutual respect between the longtime residents and new arrivals.

The master plan was designed in collaboration with University of Washington, HDK-Stenby, University of California and Mississippi State University students.

Each design team developed a conceptual diagram.

Our team’s vision for the community garden promoted play and movement for the local children. Our team’s schematic process rendered a plan based on our own team’s goals and objectives.

BUTLER POND PARK Gainesville, Florida

alance is not always an easy concept to achieve in our busy lives today. Butler pond park is a proposed mixed-use development within a high student demographic area from the University of Florida. Due to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a major hit to our economic and commercial activity, which has greatly impacted both small to large businesses across the city.

Live, work and play are important values to Butler Pond Park’s planned use area. The main goals and objectives of this site include improving connectivity across the site for better pedestrian mobility, improving stormwater management for better control of water runoff, improving landscape shading to protect users from sun exposure in hot days, improving bike lane design to provide better roadway safety for its bicycle users, increasing opportunity for users to engage in social activities during today’s reality of the global pandemic, and lastly incorporating mixed-use retail, educational, office and residential services for all its users.

This mixed-use plaza and pond park will ultimately increase economic, social, and environmental opportunity and encourage a healthy lifestyle for all its users.

estruction in a community can come in many tangible forms. In the case of India, when talaabs and nallahs are displaced, so are their communities. The site is in Raipur City within an informal community of the Civil Lines District. This informal community has undergone significant displacement due to the addition of upscale development.

Both constructions of the Katora Talaab Park and Canal Road have contributed to displacing important activities in informal communities such as temple rituals and ablutions. Canal road used to be a vegetated canal called “nallah”. This kind of change in land cover led to higher groundwater nitrate levels. Groundwater nitrate levels have increased twelve times the amount since 1990.

My project explores the opportunity to strengthen the existing relationship between water, religion, and place for a sustainable future in the Indian landscape.

ainwater collection can be a powerful element for the safety and nourishment of a community. Duval is a predominantly Black and low-income community. Their residents attend church, school, and participate in local events at the Clarence R. Kelly Center, a community site named after a Duval community organizer.

Due to the racial and socioeconomic disparities of this site compared to the greater Gainesville area, our design’s concept is inspired by Martin Luther’s king quote “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream”.

Our intention is to revive Duval’s community pride and identity in their built environment. The connection between three sites using an artful rainwater design with bioswales circulating water to the lake and wetland act as a catalyst for this revival. The implementation of a buffered cycling path with stormwater bioswales allows community members to commute to and from school or work safely.

A FORGOTTEN SINKHOLE Gainesville, Florida

A

rtistic creativity is not a foreign concept to the Native American communities. Many of their creative works were either lost or stolen. A forgotten sinkhole is an earthwork, otherwise known as land art, project telling a pre-colonial story behind the word “La Chua”.

La Chua is a name that derives from “La” in Spanish for “the” and “Chua” in Timucuan language for “sinkhole”.

This part of history has been forgotten in our current built environment. This piece of land art is a symbol meant to pay tribute to the Native American, the Timucuan and Seminole tribes, who are underrepresented in our Florida landscape.

The current overlook is a wooden structure over 10 feet tall from the ground for visitors to peek at the most breathtaking sight of Payne’s Prairie. The proposed overlook is a sloped earthwork, 10 feet tall, within an acre parcel of land with a 5% longitudinal sloped path and a 2% cross slope.

ummer months in Florida can be excruciatingly hot for any resident living in this climate. This residential project brings out the charm of southern culture and environment where the pine flatwoods ecosystem meets the beauty of the natural Florida springs.

The vernacular character of north Florida partakes in the inspiration for the residential design of a southern cottage style home.

The homeowners experience to their natural pool evokes an experience of a Florida spring right in their own backyard.
