letter from the founder 2

Dear artworxLA supporters: Thank you for joining us to celebrate 22 years of artworxLA!

letter from the founder

Thank you for supporting our students and their efforts to get their young lives back on track. Our students have faced significant, age inappropriate obstacles. Yet they persevere, and their tenacity is admirable. At artworxLA, we work to support their journey by providing them with a creatively rigorous arts program that engages them in their education, keeps them on track to stay in school and graduate, with a plan for their futures. Through the arts, we challenge them, encourage them to ask questions, create working environments for collaboration, promote creative risk taking, and support their artistic personal journey. We have seen how powerfully art works to re-engage our students in their education and their lives. One of my favorite projects this year was the Odyssey movie poster-making class. Our students studied Homer’s The Odyssey and made movie posters announcing the “opening day”. They picked a favorite character from this epic story, did professional make-up and costuming, and photographed one another’s portraits. They then worked with Photoshop to create their backgrounds. The photos were displayed at the downtown Central Library. They studied this great epic work of literature, and gained marketable skills valued in our creative industries. Students progress up our ladder and participate in the advanced programming we offer at Otis College of Art & Design, Art Center and UCLA. Through participation in the arts, they re-engage in their education, and move from dropping out of school to participating in world-class arts institutions. Not one of us has succeeded in life without the help and support of mentors, teachers, family and community. Thank you for being here tonight, for your support of our work in bringing the arts to underserved schools, and for believing in our talented students who have faced significant obstacles in their young lives. With gratitude, Cynthia Campoy Brophy Founder and Executive Director

ABOUT 10 about artworxLA

mission artworxLA combats the epidemic high school dropout crisis by engaging students with a long-term, sequential arts program offering a pursuable life path that inspires them to stay in school, evolve as unique individuals and flourish as creative adults. we achieve this by creatively educating alternative high school teenagers with sustained arts exposure and immersion; connecting students to a network of peers, artists, cultural partners, higher education, creative industries, and supportive adults; and investing human and financial resources around ongoing, persistent student and alumni support.

why art works art works for me because it gives me a great outlet to express myself. art makes me feel in control. art is a very present, very omnipotent thing that’s always just hovering over my head. I just want to embrace it instead of having to ignore it… — Juan

core values • alternative high school students are intelligent, creative and powerful people. They possess the capacity to meet the highest expectations and are full of creative impulse. • art is indispensable, enables us to communicate, and inspires an empathetic society. • cultivating effective partnerships between artists, educators and community organizations amplifies our collective impact on the students we serve. • our society is stronger and more inclusive when our students have full and equal access to its resources and can contribute their own voice. • lasting change in our students and communities requires long-term investment. • successful work in the community starts with a creative, participatory and respectful artworxLA workplace.

ABOUT 11

One out of every four students in this country does not graduate from high school with their class. In Los Angeles County, 83% of high school dropouts are African-American or Latino and come from households living below the poverty line. A high school dropout will earn $500,000 less over a lifetime than a high school graduate and is 6 times more likely to go to jail. The negative effects of dropout extend well beyond these students and their families. Dropouts cost the state of California $1 billion in lost tax revenues and $1 billion in incarceration costs. Students cite disengagement as the leading in-school factor that causes them to drop out. artworxLA uses art to re-engage students and help them realize a path toward high school graduation and entry into Los Angeles County’s creative economy. A Ladder to Climb Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of arts-based dropout prevention programs to approximately 650 students attending 25 alternative high school sites across L.A. County. In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, arts venues, and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers youth at risk of dropping out of high school the opportunity to re-engage with their education and future. The artworxLA ladder is: Level Level Level Level

1 Arts Workshops and Student Exhibitions 2 After-School Art Residencies and Leadership Development 3 Scholarships and College Preparation 4 Alumni Mentorship and Support

Hollywood Media Arts Academy A Partnership between artworxLA and the Los Angeles County Office of Education Established in 2010, The Hollywood Media Arts Academy is about to complete its fourth academic year. As artworxLA’s programmatic and administrative hub, HMAA continues to grow and evolve as a model program for intensive arts education in an alternative high school setting. HMAA students participate in ten hours a week of arts programming in addition to earning credits in their other academic subjects, allowing them to earn their high school diploma. In an example of how art works, our partnership with the LA County Office of Education is succeeding, and our student retention rate has steadily increased from 31% in 2010-11, to 76% in 2014. In our small learning environment of fifty 9-12 grade students, there are currently thirteen students on track to graduate this June 2014, five more than last year. Students at HMAA are studying digital photography, graphic design, video production and editing, music performance and production, and animation. Through a challenging arts curriculum, students learn creative skills transferable to any life practice, as well as practical knowledge and experience valued in the 21st century workplace. Last year, HMAA was selected to be one of 20 schools in the State of California to participate in their Linked Learning initiative. HMAA is now a designated Career Technical Education school, adhering to rigorous state guidelines for media arts. In addition, HMAA students take advantage of the many resources our cultural and business partners make available to them, including field trips to The Getty Research Institute and Mirada studios, exclusive film screenings at Fox Studios, financial literacy classes from Union Bank, and guest speakers from our creative industry partners.

On the following pages, supporters have sponsored photographs of artwork created by artworxLA students. Working with several artists over the course of the last 10 months, our students have explored themes from Homer’s “The Odyssey”, discussed and created art about issues of identity through the immigrant experience, and debated how art can be a powerful weapon for social change. Thanks to our sponsors for highlighting our students’ impressive artwork.
