Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate 25 years of artworxLA. 25 years! Together, as a community of caring supporters, we have established a powerful creative pathway for our county’s most vulnerable young people to thrive. Over the past 25 years, we have brought the arts into alternative education classrooms across Los Angeles County to re-engage our students in their education and to see a path forward. We have created a pathway that begins inside their alternative education classroom in their neighborhoods and connects them to the many resources that Los Angeles has to offer, but that too often is out of reach. Over these 25 years, our students have shifted their trajectories from dropping out to re-connecting to their education and their future. By including our students’ voices in our city’s conversations, we as a community listen to different perspectives, we hear different points of view and we understand that we need to embrace more inclusive practices. This inclusivity is our strength. We are proud of our students’ accomplishments, which are even more extraordinary when you know of the tremendous obstacles they have faced in their young lives. But tonight we are celebrating their tenacity, their resiliency and their gifts more than focusing on the challenges they have faced. This resiliency is an asset to celebrate. Thank you for walking with us these many years. Together we have made a difference in so many lives. PAIGE GOLDBERG TOLMACH HONOREE Filmaker, Entrepreneur & Activist Soon after his birth, Paige Goldberg Tolmach’s son Jackson developed a severe case of eczema. Unable to find relief or answers in traditional treatments, Paige began looking for environmental causes. Only after making dramatic lifestyle changes— ridding her home and medicine cabinet of environmental toxins—did she cure her son. Determined to help other parents and children avoid what her family had gone through, Paige founded THE LITTLE SEED in 2007, a one stop eco conscious store in Los Angeles which helped raise awareness about the dangers of toxic chemicals in our homes. In 2009, The Little Seed helped Seventh Generation launch their “Million Baby Crawl” which demanded that Congress change federal laws to keep toxic chemicals out of our homes. In 2010, she and her partner collaborated with Target to bring The Little Seed’s eco sensibility and eco awareness to the masses. A leading expert on environmental toxins and their effects on children, Tolmach has been featured in several television, online and print media including CNN, Big Ideas for a Small Planet, The Los Angeles Times, People, Cookie Magazine, Babble.com, and TheCradle.com. Continuing to advocate for children, Paige is currently working on her first documentary feature about her high school’s cover up of the sexual abuse of many male students at the hands of the school’s coach in the 1980’s.

Matt Tolmach is currently producing the highly anticipated feature film reimagining of Jumanji directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black; as well as Rock That Body, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell and Kate McKinnon, both of which are currently in post production for Sony Pictures. Jumanji will be released over Christmas of this year; Rock That Body will be released in June. He previously produced The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 directed by Marc Webb, as well as Alex Gibney’s The Armstrong Lie. He and Frank Marshall are executive producing the documentary “What Haunts Us,” directed by Paige Tolmach. For television, Tolmach is executive producing the Hulu series “Future Man,” with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. As President of Columbia Pictures for many years, Tolmach oversaw some of the studio’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Moneyball, The Pursuit of Happyness, Superbad, Pineapple Express, Zombieland, Step Brothers, The DaVinci Code, 2012, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, and many others. He and Paige are also coproducing a son, Jackson Tolmach, who is ten.

OCTAVIA SPENCER HONOREE Actress and Author One of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents, Octavia Spencer has become a familiar fixture on both television and the silver screen. Her critically acclaimed performance as Minny in 2011’s The Help won her the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and Golden Globe Award, among numerous other accolades. Throughout the past year she has taken on many different characters, such as Johanna in Allegiant and Miss Harris in The Great Gilly Hopkins, as well as lending her voice to the character of Mrs. Otterton in Zootopia. Octavia can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed Hidden Figures, a drama that follows the true story of three African American women who were instrumental to NASA catching up in the Space Race. Octavia’s performance as Dorothy Vaughan has earned her SAG, Golden Globe, NAACP Image Award and Academy Award nominations. Spencer currently stars in Gifted and can be found in upcoming The Shack.

FROM HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT TO ENGAGED GRADUATE While California’s graduation rate reached 82% in 2015, rates for Los Angeles’ continuation high school students can be as low as 10%. These students are disengaged and struggling with life circumstances that push school attendance far down their priority list. Without a diploma, they will earn $500,000 less than a graduate over a lifetime and are six times more likely to be incarcerated or enter the criminal justice system – 82% of U.S. inmate are high school dropouts. The negative effects extend well beyond these students and their families, as the state loses $1 billion in lost tax revenue and incurs $1 billion in incarceration costs.
THE ARTWORXLA LADDER
A LADDER TO CLIMB
Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of arts-based dropout prevention programs to approximately 650 students enrolled in 27 alternative high school classrooms across L.A. County. In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, art venues and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers promising youth at risk of dropping out of high school the chance to re-engage in their education and reclaim their future.

SAITO MUSIC & FASHION ACADEMY Saito high school continues to grow and evolve as a model for intensive arts education in the alternative high school setting. Saito provides students with programming in music production, graphic design, visual arts, and animation. Saito students are currently in their first year of their artistic programming. With each day of their artistic engagement, Saito students grow their creative skills and develop a wealth knowledge which is often transferable. In addition to workshops that focus on digital content and 21st-century skills, Saito High School provides students with interactive speaker engagements. Professionals from creative industries inspire students to seek out creative careers and expose them to the range of jobs in the arts in Los Angeles.

artworxLA provides a weekly presence in 27 alternative high school classrooms from Arleta to Lynwood, Monterey Park to Mar Vista. Inspired by the programs and exhibitions at cultural partner institutions such as The California African American Museum, The Hammer Museum, The GRAMMY Museum, The Chinese American Museum, Project 51: Play the LA River, UCLA’s Art | Global Health Center, and the Confucius Institute our students explore common themes through various art forms and then present or perform their final works at these world-renowned cultural treasures. We are pleased to announce that our cultural partners for 2016-17 are Los Angeles Public Library and Task Force, Los Angeles Conservancy, and Skirball Cultural Center. We are proud to serve the alternative education students of Los Angeles Unified School District, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Culver Unified School District, Compton Unified School District, and Lynwood Unified School District.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS The alumni below successfully climbed artworxLA’s “ladder” of arts programs and stay active through artworxLA’s Advanced Programs. At one point on the verge of dropping out of high school, they have all graduated or are on their way to graduate. All are pursuing productive futures of their own design. We are proud to share their successes with you.
JOANNA FARIAS Before joining artworxLA at Central High School-All People’s, Joanna lost interest in school due to large class sizes and lack of diversity in the courses provided. Inspired by her experiences in artworxLA dance and theatre classes, she joined Advanced Program residencies for two consecutive years at the Bootleg Theatre and earned a scholarship with Contra-Tiempo Dance Company. Each experience gave Joanna a newfound conviction toward broadening her education. Joanna is currently studying biology at Los Angeles City College, and plans on becoming a veterinarian.
BLANCA MARTINEZ Blanca graduated in 2013 from Pueblo de Los Angeles High School. After graduating high school, Blanca went to study photography at San Francisco Art Institute. Blanca interests in photography blossomed with her experiences at artworxLA, especially with her participation in Art Center at Night, Summer Institutes at UCLA, and Summer of Art at Otis College of Art Design, all of which she received scholarships for as part of artworxLA Level 3. Blanca is interested in all subjects’ photography and is articulate about artists she’s following. Blanca is dedicated to pursue her interests in photography.
STEPHEN NA Stephen Na graduated from artworxLA’s Hollywood Media Arts Academy (HMAA) in 2013. Prior to HMAA, he attended Fairfax High School where he had lots of work to catch up on, and no time for art. He was redirected to artworxLA’s HMAA where he started making art as an everyday thing. After graduating, he was encouraged to enroll at Santa Monica College where he continued studying art. Inspired by the animation and design aesthetics of Asia, he explores character development and environmental concepts, merging his broad interests of biology, chemistry, astrology, ancient history, and historical science. Stephen is currently enrolled at ArtCenter College of Design full-time and is taking classes in painting and composition, design, materials, and humanities. He is in the process of choosing his major, and is leaning towards entertainment arts, with a focus on animation film production.
GABRIEL PEREZ Gabriel Perez is a Quality Control Technician at BET. As a student at Central High School/All People’s Branch, Gabriel participated in artworxLA programs at Art Center College of Design. After graduation, he earned an A.A. from Pasadena City College and a B.A. in Post-production Editing and Filmmaking from Cal-State Northridge.
JAZMIN ROBLES Jazmin Robles who graduated high school in 2009, is pursuing a career in culinary arts, and is currently a student at Le Cordon Bleu. With a family background in special events and parties, Jazmin enjoys celebrations with delicious food. One of her best memories of being involved with artworxLA was the opportunity to attend the Summer of Art at Otis College of Art and Design.

VINCENT AVILA Before joining artworxLA in 2015, Vincent was so unmotivated by his high school courses that he fell behind in credits. Vincent’s passion for school was reignited by a filmmaking workshop with artworxLA. Inspired by this experience, he went on to participate in Advanced Programs residencies with ArtCenter College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, and the Actors’ Gang. Vincent plans on attending a four-year college to pursue a career in law, while exploring his interest in photography.
ZION GALVAN Zion Galvan joined our artistic programming at Amelia Earhart in the Fall of 2016. Before joining artworxLA, Zion moved constantly from school to school until he was introduced to an 11-week workshop with Irina Contreras. Inspired by this experience, Zion climbed our programming ladder and completed a Visual Arts Residency with ArtCenter College. In early 2017, Zion joined our Advanced Programs Leadership and Development workshop and participated in our Music Residency with The Young Producers Group. Passionate about illustration, Zion has often professed his goals of strengthening his talents as an artist by connecting with other accomplished illustrators and working hard to deepen his talents in drawing.
PERLA GONZALES Perla Gonzalez is currently a student at Amelia Earhart HS. Through artworxLA, Perla presented her art at the Hammer Museum, Skirball Cultural Center and Los Angeles Public Library. Inspired by her experiences in her first of workshops, she joined our Advanced Program residencies in Music and Fashion. Currently on track to graduate high school, Perla plans to join a summer residency with USC to study architecture after graduation.
BRISA NAVARRETE Before joining artworxLA, Brisa’s interests in attended school decreased because her classes were far from home and the courses took were very dis-engaging. After taking her first artistic workshops with artworxLA Teaching Artist Maria Ramos, Brisa’s interests in school was reignited. Rising quickly at artworxLA, she has completed after school Advanced Programs courses in fashion design and she is deeply interested in attending summer scholarship programs with Otis College of Art and Design and UCLA. In these programs she hopes to grow her talents in art in the areas of photography, filmmaking and fashion. The experience of exploring a cross sector of artistic careers has inspired her to want to take college courses outside of the United States. Brisa one day hopes to use all of her skills to work abroad in a creative career industry.
DOMINIQUE LAWHEAD Prior to joining artworxLA, Dominique was unmotivated with school and battled with self-esteem issues. After joining artworxLA’s programs at Amelia Earhart, she was able to find a passion for school from the creative workshops she attended. Through artworxLA, she participated in music residencies with Young Producers Group and a fashion residency with Otis College of Art and Design. Eager to explore her creative talents, she’s planning on taking summer residencies with ArtCenter College of Design, UCLA and Otis College. Currently, Dominique’s number one goal is to go to college, graduate and have a career that satisfies her life and passions.
