Thank you for coming to our 24th Annual Evening of Art! It is a pleasure to share our work with you and we are tremendously grateful for your support. Tonight we celebrate the accomplishments of our students and recognize the challenging journey they have traveled in their young lives. We celebrate the way in which our community comes together to support them by providing access to the many resources Los Angeles has to offer. This past year our students re-engaged in their education through our arts program in their classrooms, and they participated in programs with our cultural partners. They presented their art work at The Hammer Museum, the GRAMMY Museum, and the California African American Museum. They studied fashion at Otis College of Art & Design, visual art at Art Center, and theater with The Actors’ Gang. They job shadowed and benefited from field trips to our many creative business partners. Our students are at highest risk of dropping out of school. Our arts program re-engages them to be curious, to love learning, to see an inspiring future. This work takes a community of people, and we thank you for connecting with artworxLA, and for sharing your resources with our students. Together we make a difference. With gratitude,

GRANT C. KIRKPATRICK HONOREE
President, KAA Design A third generation Californian, Grant Kirkpatrick draws his energy and inspiration from his home state’s progressive ideals and optimistic embrace of the new. He has been the visionary force behind KAA Design, the firm he founded 25 years ago. Now known as Kirkpatrick Architects, Grant and his team continue to enjoy elevating the human spirit through the benefits and authenticity of warm contemporary residential design. Raised in Palos Verdes, Grant earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree at USC and became a licensed architect at 24. His entrepreneurial spirit and passion for design led him to found Kirkpatrick Associates Architects just a few years later in 1988. Since then, the award-winning firm has completed projects for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Christie’s auction house, Hugo Boss stores across the nation, master plans and renovations for the Jonathan Club, the Santa Monica Beach Club, the Manhattan Country Club, and other award winning commercial and hospitality projects. Grant currently serves as the Vice Chairman on artworxLA’s Board of Directors. “...I’ve had the incredible fortune of having my parents remodel our house when I was 12. I was immediately taken by the whole endeavor – the oozing concrete, fresh cut wood, this guy with plans waving his arms around. I said “hey, that’s cool”. They called him an Architect and I knew right then and there that this is what I wanted to do. I never looked back. I was lucky. But many kids are not. That drives me like you can’t believe…” Grant Kirkpatrick is internationally recognized for his visionary approach to architecture and design. artworxLA celebrates his passion for arts education and his long term commitment to the students served by artworxLA.

Los Angeles County Supervisor, District 3 Supervisor Sheila James Kuehl, representing Los Angeles County’s Third District, was elected on November 4, 2014, and assumed office on December 1. She was the first woman in California history to be named Speaker Pro Tempore of the Assembly, and the first openly gay or lesbian person to be elected to the California Legislature. Kuehl served as chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, Natural Resources and Water Committee, and Budget Subcommittee on Water, Energy and Transportation, as well as the Assembly Judiciary Committee. “...Creative energy is important. What is governing but the process of identifying problems and creatively finding solutions to those problems? Adrienne Rich, a favorite poet of mine, writes “politics is imagination or it is a treadmill.” Creativity is an under-recognized, but important part of the work of government, crafting imaginative solutions to problems in people’s lives…”

SOPHIA RIVKA ROSSI HONOREE
Chief Executive Officer, HelloGiggles Sophia Rossi co-founded HelloGiggles, the popular internet haven for girls of all ages, along with writer Molly McAleer and her real-life bestie, New Girl star and She and Him songstress Zooey Deschanel. She has produced and written for several hit television series, including Fox’s Glee and MTV’s The Hills and The City. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sophia bases much of her own personal and professional vision on popular internet culture and is particularly fond of tween blogs and young artists. “...As an LA native, I feel connected to the organization instinctively, out of a desire to support my community. But as an individual and through my work with HelloGiggles, I’ve also always felt a strong connection to adolescence, and I think it’s very important to be involved in empowering our youth, giving them an opportunity to create and communicate and be heard…”

MISSION artworxLA combats the epidemic high school dropout crisis with a long-term, sequential arts program offering students a pursuable life path that inspires them to stay in school, evolve as unique individuals
Storytelling, art, and philosophy have always been a passion of mine. Through artworxLA, I’ve developed a voice for the content of my work. With the money I earned in internships, I was able to build a work space for myself with powerful technology and art supplies. ABOUT
FROM HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT TO ENGAGED GRADUATE While California’s graduation rate reached 80% for the first time in 2014, graduation rates for Los Angeles’ continuation high school students can be as low as 10%. These students are disengaged and struggling with overwhelming life circumstances that push school attendance far down their priority lists. Without a diploma, they will earn $500,000 less over a lifetime and are six times more likely to go to jail—82% of U.S. inmates are dropouts. The negative effects extend well beyond these students and their families, as the state loses $1 billion in lost tax revenues and incurs $1 billion in incarceration costs.

Level 1: Arts Workshops and Student Exhibitions
Each year, artworxLA brings a “ladder” of arts-based dropout prevention programs to approximately 650 students enrolled at 25 alternative high school classrooms across L.A. County. In partnership with working artists, cultural centers, arts venues, and institutions of higher learning, our structure of progressive arts opportunities offers promising youth at risk of dropping out of high school the chance to reengage in their education and reclaim their future.

HOLLYWOOD MEDIA ARTS ACADEMY A Partnership between artworxLA and the Los Angeles County Office of Education Established in 2010, the Hollywood Media Arts Academy is artworxLA’s programmatic and administrative hub. HMAA continues to grow and evolve as a model for intensive arts education in the alternative high school setting. A Career Technical Education school with a Graphic Communications focus, HMAA provides students with programming in digital photography, graphic design, video production, music production, and animation. HMAA students regularly participate in artworxLA’s ladder of programs and recently completed summer programs with UCLA and Art Center. In addition to workshops that focus
on digital content and 21st-century skills, HMAA provides students with interactive speaker engagements. Professionals from creative industries inspire students to seek out creative careers and expose them to the range of jobs in the arts in Los Angeles. Since its launch, the student retention rate increased from 32% to 81%, enrollment reached capacity, and the number of graduates tripled—the largest of any of LACOE’s alternative schools. With support from artworxLA, these students can reverse course, from quitting school to achieving graduation and imagining a stable future where their creative talents are valued.

artworxLA provides a weekly presence in 25 alternative high school classrooms from Arleta to Lynwood, Monterey Park to Mar Vista. Inspired by the programs and exhibitions at cultural partner institutions such as The Chinese American Museum, The GRAMMY Museum, The Confucius Institute, Project 51: Play the LA River, UCLA’s Art | Global Health Center, and The Fowler Museum our students explore common themes through various art forms and then present or perform their final works at these world-renowned cultural treasures. We are pleased

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS The alumni below successfully climbed artworxLA’s “ladder” of arts programs and stay active through artworxLA’s Advanced Programs. At one point on the verge of dropping out of high school, they have all graduated or are on their way to graduate. All are pursuing productive futures of their own design. We are proud to share their successes with you.
DARIO ALFARO graduated from the Hollywood Media Arts Academy 2015, and is currently pursuing sociology at Santa Monica College. Through artworxLA, he presented his artwork at such venues as the Central Library, Skirball Cultural Center, and UCLA. An aspiring writer, he recently published a short story on the theme of “Imagine Being Afraid” in Art Block Zine, a student-run quarterly zine that publishes poetry, essays, and short stories.
VINCENT AVILA Before joining artworxLA in 2015, Vincent Avila waswas so unmotivated by his high school courses that he fell behind in credits. Vincent’s passion for school was reignited by a filmmaking workshop with artworxLA. Inspired by this experience, he went on to participate in Advanced Programs residencies with Art Center College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, and the Actors’ Gang. Vincent plans on attending a four-year college to pursue a career in law, while exploring his interest in photography.
ALFREDO ALVARADO graduated from Frida Kahlo High School in 2013, and is now a graphic design student at Los Angeles City College. He was the Summer 2015 Getty Multicultural Intern responsible for designing a training handbook for teaching artists. An arts advocate and activist, his recent activities include speaking about reinventing high school for Project XQ and on the American Dream for the Re:Dream project through PBS. Beyond multiple artworxLA Advanced Programs residencies and scholarships, Alfredo has assisted creative professionals with many projects, including product development and murals.
BRYAN CLEMENTE graduated from the Hollywood Media Arts Academy in 2013, where he took classes in visual art, film, photography, music, and printmaking. A visual artist active in artworxLA community endeavors, he recently contributed to public art projects created for Metro Art, as well as murals in South Los Angeles with Asylm and Patrick Henry Johnson. He has been an active participant in Advanced Programs at Art Center, Otis College of Art and Design, and most recently at the Actors’ Gang.
JASMINE DIAZ graduated from Angelus Plaza College Preparatory High School in 2007, during which time she participated in the prestigious MOCA Apprenticeship Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Jasmine attended Merced College before transferring to California State University to study biology and environmental sciences, focusing on soil and water treatment. Jasmine has merged her interests in art, science and social justice through her activities as an arts and community advocate. She currently serves as President of the Merced LGBTQ and Ally Board of Directors.

JOANNA FARIAS Before joining artworxLA at Central High School-All People’s, Joanna Farias lost interest in school due to large class sizes and lack of diversity in the courses provided. Inspired by her experiences in artworxLA dance and theatre classes, she joined Advanced Program residencies for two consecutive years at the Bootleg Theatre and earned a scholarship with Contra-Tiempo Dance Company. Each experience gave Joanna a newfound conviction toward broadening her education. Joanna is currently studying biology at Los Angeles City College, and plans on becoming a veterinarian.
CECILIA FLORES An aspiring fashion designer of unisex clothing, Cecilia Flores fostered her interest in art and fashion through artworxLA programming, especially at Otis College of Art Design where she created her own original patterns and fashion garments. She is currently enrolled at Los Angeles Trade Tech and serves on the artworxLA Board of Directors. Cecilia was recently featured in “Little Docs,” a short film about artworxLA by Steph Green.
KELAN GOMES graduated from Culver Park Continuation High School in 2015. Through artworxLA he presented his artwork in photography, theatre, and visual art at UCLA, the Chinese American Museum, and the LA River Center. He participated in a fashion residency at Otis College of Art and Design, where he also attended the college’s Summer of Art. Kelan is currently pursuing product design in South Florida.
JONATHAN MAYORGA has been involved with artworxLA since 2012. An artist of many disciplines from drawing to music, Jonathan is interested in learning broadly about career choices, including architecture. A current student at the Hollywood Media Arts Academy, Jonathan has participated in multiple Advanced Programs with the Street Poets, at Art Center, the GRAMMY Museum, and UCLA Summer Institute. He will graduate high school in 2016, and currently works for the screen printing company Golden Purple Creative.
STEPHEN NA graduated from artworxLAs Hollywood Media Arts Academy in 2013. Inspired by the animation and design aesthetics of Asia, he explores character development and environmental concepts, merging his broad interests of biology, chemistry, astrology, ancient history, and historical science. Stephen is currently enrolled at Santa Monica College and is taking classes in their Entertainment Technology program in the Animation and Visual Development department.

Jose first participated in artworxLA programming in 2003, and has since contributed his artwork to auctions for the Annual Evening of Art, participated in and hosted the Creative Careers Mentorship Program. He was recently featured in “Little Docs,” an artworxLA documentary project and collaboration with professional filmmakers who tell the unique stories of artworxLA student-alums.
