After the summer’s unrest, ArtWorks partnered with local businesses to paint solidarity murals in support of Black Lives Matter with local Black artists leading the art on boarded up windows and in front of City Hall.

Dear Friends, at the forefront of social change.

2020 forever changed our community. It changed the way we work and how we perceive art as essential. Art is a critical economic engine. It creates jobs and fuels our economy and recovery. In 2020, we committed to creating as many jobs as possible, despite a health and economic crisis, all while being guided by visionary community-led partnerships and Artist-led initiatives.

We remember one monumental day for Cincinnati, June 19, 2020, when the Black Lives Matter! street mural was dedicated in front of City Hall. It was the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, the commemoration of emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. This important public work of art was led by Alandes Powell, Urban League of

Greater Southwestern Ohio, and Black Art Speaks collective. ArtsWave and many community leaders came together in one week. ArtWorks was a proud partner, recruiting Artists to join the movement and hiring Youth Apprentices to accomplish this historic project.

Many involved agree this was the most important art they had made in their lifetime.

This past year, Artists were leading as the community’s change agents. Whether they are standing for anti-racism, creatively getting out the vote, or inventing ways to honor our community’s real-life heroes, Artists show resilience and strength of purpose. ArtWorks was proud to partner with Artists of all ages to help our community through one of its most challenging years ever.

Our commitment in 2020 was to New Voices, elevating the next generation of change agents. We highlighted the work of emerging Artists and community members, bringing their artistic vision to life and presenting new perspectives for public art. This was our goal because our city is at its best when everyone gets a chance.

In 2020 leading up to the presidential election, Youth Apprentices set up a mobile voter registration hub at community events to distribute Hear Me Out guides and drive voter registration and participation. ArtWorks joined the Greater Cincinnati Voter Collaborative, a nonpartisan collaborative of local organizations to amplify safe voter engagement and advocacy efforts as well as share comprehensive voter resources throughout Greater Cincinnati.

What You See is What You Become

ArtWorks helped ninamdot complete her largest public installation in the series. King Me Indefinite is now visible in Avondale at Burnet and Rockdale Avenues.

“King Me Indefinite’s purpose is to encourage men to develop and maintain a high level of self-esteem,” ninamdot said. Each man or boy is regally posed, wearing a crown, and ninamdot gets her subjects by checking in at barbershops and other neighborhood locations.

A bright spot of was the opening of the Cincinnati Riding or Walking Network (CROWN) trail’s newly completed Wasson Way trail, transforming a former abandoned railway into a new community walk and bike path. This is one of the most innovative public spaces designed to serve the Norwood region and therefore the perfect first of many public art installations along the trail.

In late October 2020, 13 light-based permanent installations lit up for the first time along the Hirsch Recreation Center’s walking trail in Avondale.

Many of the installations offered advice and words of encouragement by community members to each other, all written in their own hand.

These first flickers of light were the culmination of years of work.

This installation Switch On Avondale was driven by the neighborhood's Quality of Life plan, which reads in part: “Avondale is a proud, resilient community with a rich culture and history of African American changemakers and community–builders. The community is safe and healthy, and everyone shares in its success.”

LaDe was named our 2020 Biggie Award Winner, the highest honor given to an Apprentice each year, because he consistently went above and beyond, creating high quality work with a smile. LaDe’s Teaching Artist Lindsey Whittle says he has a high level of professionalism and is a natural leader “all while being incredibly kind and optimistic.”

ArtWorks is an award-winning Greater Cincinnati nonprofit that transforms people and places through investments in creativity. The organization collaborates with community organizations and residents, businesses, governments, foundations and nonprofits to build creative works of art that bolster the region’s global reputation as an arts destination.

ArtWorks employs professional artists who inspire and mentor diverse teams of youth, ages 14-21, helping them build 21st century career-readiness skills. These teams have completed more than 14,000 public and private art projects in its 25 years, including more than 200 permanent outdoor murals.
