The Buddhahood Since 1996, The Buddhahood has been driving its World-Ternative Groove train in and out of Rochester, whipping crowds of beloved fans into frenzy, blurring the line between stage and dance floor, and transcending audiences with its explosive and soulful shows.

Carrying on the messages of Tony Cavagnaro, original Buddhahood band member and friend who died in a car crash, they continue to perform, write, and record music with an innovative and bewitching twist. The Buddhahood’s message: be happy and have fun. That’s what you’ll get. Eight members arrive from varied musical backgrounds to make up this highly creative and entertaining ensemble. With full percussion, horns, bass, guitar, keys, and multiple vocalists, this incarnation has the tools to deliver tunes mixed with shades of afro-pop, roots, reggae, jazz, rock, blues, and samba in unstoppable vibration and elemental harmony. Michael Peres Michael Peres joined the teaching faculty of the Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Photographic Arts & Sciences in 1986. He is a professor of biomedical photography and specializes in photomicrography, biomedical photography, and other related applications of photography in science.

He served as the chair of the Biomedical Photographic Communications department from 1989 until June 2010, when he became the Associate Chair of the School.

Peres has enjoyed a varied photographic career working and living in a number of cities since 1973. He has been actively publishing most of his career and recently served as the editor-in-chief of the Focal Encyclopedia of Photography – 4th Edition, published in 2007. Some of his professional activities include serving as co-chair of the RIT Images from Science and RIT Big Shot projects. Peres received the 2003 RIT Eisenhart Outstanding Faculty Award as well as the 2007 Schmidt Medal, awarded by the BioCommunications Association for lifetime achievement in the field of bio-communications. Michael holds a master’s degree in instructional technology and bachelor’s degrees in biology and biomedical photographic communications. He is also a registered biological photographer. one dance co. one dance co. was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has been active in Rochester, since December 2011. Directed by Erika Ruegemer, the artists of one dance co. collaborate to create temporary worlds within empty spaces or already existing environments through movement, costumes, and props. This year they performed their original works “I Won’t Dance” and “In You Is Home,” at THE YARDS collaborative art space, “Scene and Herd,” a structured improvisation that began inside the Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) and made it’s way onto the corner of East Avenue and Scio Street during the Rochester Jazz Festival. They have presented at TEDxRochester at Geva in November 2012, improvised at various events, and taught movement classes and a summer “intensive.” They are excited for this new year and hope you will follow them in their process. Clair Smith Clair Smith is passionate about economic education.

He currently teaches at St. John Fisher College, and has previously taught at Penn State University, Bowling Green State University, and George Mason University.

He is interested in the economics of higher education, public choice, law and economics. Smith was once a D.C. lawyer, and in his younger days dabbled seasonally in retail, landscaping, and Christmas tree sales. In bios, he bows to the convention to mention that he enjoys reading, music, and exercise, regardless of the veracity of those caims. He earned a BA in economics from Grove City College and an MA, JD, and PhD from George Mason University. He currently lives in Fairport with his wife and two children.

A Moving Experience For the past 20 years, A Moving Experience, The Arc of Monroe County’s modern dance troupe, has delighted countless audiences of all ages with original dances performed in venues as varied as its dancers. With a focus on inclusion and diversity, A Moving Experience utilizes the individuality of its dancers to create and perform dance works relating to the themes of peace and love. Emily Brown (Director/Choreographer) holds a BA in dance from SUNY Potsdam. She has attended Bates Dance Festival and American College Dance Festival. Emily has studied dance through the West African Cultural Exchange, with Garth Fagan, and currently studies at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance. Dance Coordinator for the Arc of Monroe, Emily looks forward to pursuing a masters of arts in special education/dance.

GIG GIG is a collaborative show-cycle that brings dance into unconventional venues and shines light on new music and has been called, “A cosmic collision of dance and rock and roll.” Dancers and musicians work together as one, tight-knit ensemble. Lines are blurred. No real barriers exist. Dancers act as the living, breathing extension of a singer/songwriter’s music, causing the songs to quite literally be brought to life before audience’s eyes. Whitney G-Bowley, an alum of Allendale Columbia School, founded GIG in 2010. She has always had an undeniable passion for live performance, and is honored to speak and dance today with her fellow collaborators, Patrick Firth (keys/vocals), Brian Killeen (acoustic guitar), and Lauren Chapman (vocals). They are all thrilled to be a part of this fantastic event. For more information about the show, visit www.GIGtheshow.com. #getitgood Nathaniel Mich A Rochester native, Nathaniel is the Head Chocolatier and Ice Cream Maker at Hedonist Artisan Chocolates and Ice Cream in the South Wedge. Prior to taking the lead in the kitchen, he worked with the Education Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nathaniel majored in anthropology, geology, and archaeological studies at Oberlin College (Class of 2010, Phi Beta Kappa), focusing on culinary anthropology and the history of food. In particular, he is interested in how people use food and its associated material culture to navigate culture contact situations. In the kitchen, he enjoys showcasing local ingredients and creating unexpected combinations of sweet and savory flavors.

Patricia Brogan and Taylor Sherman Patricia Vaughan Brogan began her career in Syracuse, NY as a special education teacher, central office liaison, and champion of inclusive practices. Later, her career took her to Ohio where she served as a director and assistant superintendent for the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Over the past 11 years Pat has been serving as Director of Special Education for the Pittsford Central School District, a nationally ranked school district. At PCSD her work has focused on increasing participation of students with disabilities as full members of the caring school community, promoting Universal Design for Learning, and improving vocational and transitional opportunities for students. Pat holds degrees in special education and administration, and is currently enrolled in the doctoral program in educational leadership at the University of Rochester.

Janice Gouldthorpe Janice is currently the Executive Director of the Genesee Center for the Arts & Education. Prior to joining this organization in 2005, she was with Eastman Kodak Company for 24 years. She spent her career at Kodak in various engineering and management positions. Janice is active in the Monroe Avenue Merchants Association and the Council of Agency Executives. She also is on the board of directors and helped found Kamina Friends, a local non-profit whose mission is to help start small businesses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The work of this non-profit is now taking place in 3 communities in the Congo, has helped over 200 businesses start or expand, and more than 1000 people gain new employment.

Cindy Ebinger Cindy Ebinger is currently a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rochester. She studied oceanography at MIT, earth, atmospheric, and planetary sciences at MIT, and geology at Duke University. Some recent awards that she has received include: ‧ Bullerwell Lecturer, British Geophysical Association ‧ Fellow, Geological Society of America ‧ Geophysical Observatory Career Service Award, presented at the 50th Anniversary of the Geophysical Observatory, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, November 2007 Chase, Olivia, and Dr. Vito Quatella Dr. Vito Quatela is a facial plastic surgeon from Rochester NY, author, international lecturer, educator, and founder of the HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles) Foundation. He has devoted a good part of the last ten years to changing the lives of children by leading teams repairing congenital deformities in developing countries.

He is here today to inspire each and every one of you to change the world, one child at a time. Chase Quatela is a senior at Allendale Columbia School. Olivia Quatela (class of 2012) is a freshman at the University of Rochester.

aTonalHits Katha Zinn is a member of the newly founded group aTonalHits, which is dedicated to bringing contemporary and lesser known works to light.

The group also produces small films, using the medium to explore music, art, drama, and animation in different ways. She has just released the first part of a two-set album of Schnittke Sonatas with pianist Illya Filshtinskiy under aTonalHit’s label. As a performer, Katha has performed across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. In addition, she has given a concert tour of Holland, as well as several concerts in Taiwan and Japan with Illya Filshtinskiy, a member of aTonalHits. Illya is responsible for all of the video work and photography produced by the group. In response to a video of Katha Zinn playing Bach’s Sonata in C Major, Illya won the Juilliard Alum Video Competition.
