ADVOCATES OF ROUTT COUNTY: THE ART OF SURVIVAL

The year 2023 marks the 40th year Advocates of Routt County has been serving victims of sexual and domestic violence. In October—Domestic Violence Awareness Month—they will be collaborating with the local creative community to increase awareness of the violence in our community and celebrate the resilience of survivors. The theme Honoring Survivors of Relationship Abuse will be interpreted into works of art that will then be auctioned off during Advocates’ 40th Anniversary Celebration. Visit downtown galleries and businesses to view the work, or for more details, visit advocatesrc.org.

COLORADO NEW PLAY FESTIVAL: IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE GOING TO PUT PLAYWRIGHTS OUT OF BUSINESS?

Imagine coming up with a concept for a story—maybe a paragraph or so. You go to openai.com, type in your concept, your characters’ names, and a line or two describing each character. You say you want the story written in the style of Oscar Wilde. Hit the Enter key and your play is generated, complete with character arcs and an overarching story arc. You make a few brief edits to give it your “voice,” and before you know it, you are on stage accepting your Tony Award. Far-fetched? In 2020 openai. com was already able to generate stories

with characters, setting and dialogue written in the style of famous authors. What does this mean for playwrighting? Does a story generated by AI belong to the “author’ or AI? If AI is copying the style of a famous author, who does the copyright of the story belong to? How will a theater company be able to tell how a story was created? Is AI a tool for the industry or the beginning of its downfall? To find out, join CNPF in Siverthorne July 22, 2023 for a one-day conference on AI and Playwriting. PERRY-MANSFIELD PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL & CAMP

Be one of the first people to experience the renovated Julie Harris Theatre on the P-M campus. When the theater was originally built in 1956, it was a cutting-edge design with thrust, proscenium and theater in the round. This summer, the building will have a makeover allowing it to be used year-round. Upgrades include a new roof, insulation, new doors, storm windows and a fully operating HVAC system. The lobby will receive new lighting. Inside the theater, the stage has been expanded and new risers built and installed. A new lighting and AV system will be installed this year along with ADA accessibility and three new public bathrooms.

Don’t miss this summer’s Pre-Professional Theatre Intensive Musical, Cabaret. The main character in the musical is based on a character made famous by the

Tony award-winning actress, Julie Harris, who attended P-M camp. Her time with founder Charlotte Perry gave her the confidence to go on to a career in theater. In August, Opera Steamboat will hold its season there.

STEAMBOAT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra’s April 2023 concert, The Wonder of the Wild, was phenomenal. The program

selection may appear a bit mad to someone looking at the combination of styles, but in reality, the music blended perfectly to take the audience on a journey through the tensions of the natural world. The concert opened with John Barry’s Dances with Wolves: A Suite for Orchestra, followed by Claude Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. The first half of the program ended with an original score composed by Maestro Ernest Richardson with lyrics by Dagny McKinley titled Wolf Songs.

Tara Richardson’s singing brought the piece to life. The second half opened with Elton John’s Suite from Lion King, then an arrangement by flautist Eduardo Cassapia, titled Mallku, played by Eduardo and sung by Eduardo and Tara. The finale was a dramatic rendition of Ottorino Respighi’s Pini di Roma, p141.

The SSO is one of Steamboat Springs’ hidden gems. If you missed the concert, or want to watch it again, visit SteamboatSymphony.org to view the video.
