Welcome to Artwave 2026 The 33rd annual celebration of creativity across the Lewes District.

This year, explore 176 free-to-visit exhibitions across three weeks in September. Meet artists and makers in their studios and workshops, and exhibiting in solo and group shows in private homes, ancient churches, disused mills, and in farms and gardens.

This year, we’ll be spotlighting Artwave on the Newhaven - Dieppe ferry, and inviting travellers to visit the many venues that are just a short walk, bus or train ride of the terminal, growing a creative connection that we hope will flourish for years to come.

While you’re out on the trails, enjoy the fantastic hospitality in the area, and look out for the new Foodwave festival that champions local food producers, restaurants, breweries and makers with supper clubs, tastings and talks. And, when you’re out and about in Lewes, look out for historic images of local life from the Edward Reeves Archive, exhibited in windows around the town in the return of Stories Seen Through A Glass Plate: Working Lewes.

Our cover art this year is And The Sheep is Crowned King by Kim De Paolis (Oil on canvas 85 x 61cm).

Kim paints on cardboard, canvas and textiles, and reimagines traditional childhood games through filmed performance. Her work responds to research into the history of the English countryside and its representation in fine art, with a particular interest in the role of sheep. An alumni of the Turps East Sussex fine art mentoring programme, Kim is showing work alongside ten of her fellow alumni during Artwave 2026.

Remembering Rhoda Funnell (1962 - 2026) Missing from the listings this year is the brilliant Old Forge Open House in South Heighton.

The home of sculptor Christian Funnell and his wife Rhoda, The Old Forge was one of the most popular venues on the Artwave Trail for more than 20 years, and championed a great many artists and makers in that time.

Rhoda passed away in January after a long illness, and the house will not open this year.

Her absence will be felt in Artwave, as it is by the wider community, but her belief in the value of the arts, generosity of welcome, and curatorial flair will live on in all the festivals to come.
