The Zebra Pen brand is as unique as the products we sell. Legend has it that Mr. Ishikawa, founder of Zebra Co. Ltd wanted a company name that would be memorable and appropriate for their export business to other countries. He opened an English/Japanese dictionary and stopped at “Zebra.”
Upon further research, Mr. Ishikawa found that zebras are gentle animals with a strong family herding instinct. This was an important attribute, since he wanted to build a business in which employees and customers were all part of a family-like culture.

TYPES OF PEN INK
PIGMENT INK
A pigment is a dry, powdery substance that must be mixed with a liquid, like water, to leave behind color. Pigment based ink is not necessarily water soluble, and tend to bond to paper, a reason why this ink tends to last long and resists fading over time, referred to as archive quality.
WATER-BASED INK
Water-Based ink is most common in Gel Pens, Fountain Pens, and Rollerballs. It provides a smooth writing experience that won’t skip and delivers bold, highly-pigmented colours. Ideal for expressive writers looking for a free flowing and colorful writing experience.
OIL-BASED INK
Oil-Based ink is common in most ballpoint pens. It is an ideal everyday writing ink as it doesn’t smudge and is water resistant. Great for heavy users who write a lot throughout their day.
RAPID DRY INK
Hate smudges? With our breakthrough Rapid Dry Ink technology, ink dries in just a second on most surfaces, so it’s a favourite of left handers! Super smooth, it is perfect for creative art projects or everyday use. Rapid Dry Ink provides bright vibrant color.
PEN TERMINOLOGY
POINT SIZE
Point size refers to the diameter of the nib, or tip, of a pen. The sizes are listed in millimeters, and the lower the number, the finer the line… 0.5mm is somewhat fine, 0.7mm is the most commonly used, and 1.6mm is quite bold.
WRITE OUT
This is just another way of saying capacity, or life expectancy, of the pen and indicates how long you can write with a particular pen before the ink cartridge runs out. A variety of factors can influence a pen’s write out like point size, pressure, or surface.
LAY DOWN
Describes how much ink flows out and is applied to the writing surface when writing. The bolder the line (higher point size), the greater the amount of ink that is laid down.
DRY TIME
One of the most important product attributes for consumers when choosing a pen. Dry time refers to the amount of time it takes for the ink to dry on the writing surface. Factors that impact the speed of ink dry time include, but are not limited to; type of paper used, amount of writing pressure applied and the type of ink.
VISCOSITY
The most important product attribute sought out by consumers is the performance of the pen, which is represented in a writing instruments smoothness. Viscosity refers to the thickness or fluidity of the ink or how easily and smoothly the ink flows from the pen to the writing surface. A low viscosity or advanced ink provides a smoother writing experience.
