Sports Clubs and Societies play a vital role in building communities at UAL. This year I’ll be working on making our student groups more affordable and accessible to everyone! Last year I started to lobby UAL to make their campuses step free for disabled students, help me continue this work! We’ve got a long way to go to make arts education accessible for all.

I graduated from the Drama Centre (currently at CSM), and am your official link officer for CSM and LCF. I’ll be lobbying this year again to improve international students’ experience and protect EU students, and make sure UAL procedures (like Extenuating Circumstances and Appeals) are fair in the midst of Covid recovery!

Representation is at the heart of what I do, and I want to ensure that UAL increase visibility for marginalised communities within the university; from committing to their AntiRacism strategy to continuing to decolonise the arts. UAL must become a safe space for all students, and this means working with you guys to create an environment where students with different backgrounds and identities can feel represented, respected and valued.

SPORTS CLUBS Participating in sports is a great way to not only keep active, but also meet like-minded students from across all of our colleges and build lifelong communities.

Each year we take on our rivals, Goldsmiths in our Varsity event.

Varsity is a one-day celebration of sport where our clubs compete against one another to be crowned the Arts Cup Champions. Whether you’re competing or coming to watch, you’ll enjoy the party atmosphere - food, drinks, face paint, music and more!

After our convincing wins in 2018 & 2019, Goldsmiths took our Varsity trophy in 2020, so the next Varsity is one not to be missed – guaranteed to have thrills, spills, tears, and cheers!

Graphic and Media Design at LCC, Maddy has competed in the World Championships, the Junior World Cup, and the British Grand Final and currently competes for Great Britain.

Paddy Lish – Raring to get back on the mat, Paddy competes in judo whilst just completing his Foundation Performance year at CSM. Winning a silver medal at the London Universities Championship as well as a gold at the Dan Helder International Competition, has given Paddy the perfect platform to continue his success this year.

Elizabeth Fuller – Now starting her third year being part of the Elite Athlete Program, Lizzy is a Fine Art student at Chelsea who competes in rowing. Lizzy will be looking to build on her success in 2019 where she won gold in the BUCS rowing regatta, ahead of students from 25 universities.

ARTS ACTIVE Arts Active is a wellbeing social program offering casual, noncompetitive activities designed for all students - from complete beginners to experienced players to try something new, de-stress and, most importantly, have a good time.

Each session is run by one of our student staff, who are always happy to help. We aim to be increasingly student-led and so we are always looking for students to submit ideas for events and activities!

HISTORY

Arts SU Freshers’ Guide 20/21

/ˈhɪst(ə)ri/ the whole series of past events connected with a particular person or thing The Students’ Union at UAL has been here for a while now and we have achieved some great things along the way. Here are just a few examples of what we’ve been up to over the years:

1997 Xhibit is founded by then-students of the London Institute, Kit Hammonds and Angela Robinson. Established as a way to showcase the work of students from all colleges, the programme continues to thrive every year with the support of the Students’ Union to this day.

2014 After the SU publishes its research into international student scholarship, the university commits to provide ten scholarships worth £25,000 each for international students from low and lower-middle income countries.

2017 UAL implements online unconscious bias training for all staff after continuous pressure from the SU to eliminate hidden bias and discrimination.

2020 In response to Covid-19 the Advice team launches a Companion Scheme for students, while the current Sabbatical Officers work closely with UAL’s Senior Management and Governors to ensure that decisions being made in response to the crisis do not unfairly impact students.

2011 Made in Arts London is founded by then-students Kate Rintoul and Robyn Minogue with the assistance of the Students’ Union. Alongside Xhibit, the programme provides students with a platform to showcase their creativity, and continues to thrive under the SU’s commitment to provide students with professional development opportunities.

2015 Following initiatives by the SU to raise awareness and provide support for trans students, such as Trans Awareness Week, the university agrees to implement gender neutral toilets on all UAL sites.

2019 Following the SU’s publication of a Cost of Study report the previous year, the university agrees to a number of demands made as part of the Union’s Cut the Cost of Study campaign, allocating £250,000 a year for a materials grant and hardship funds.
