Paper Art KATHRYN GROF-TISZA

In the world of paper art, simplicity meets sophistication in the captivating works of Kathryn "Kitt" Grof-Tisza Influenced by folk art and the intricate designs of Charley Harper, Kitt merges realism with whimsical charm. She states, "When I look at the world, I see wonderful shapes, patterns, and colors I try to imaginethepossibilitiesofinterpretingthemthroughmyart."

Kitt's journey into the world of art began with illustrating her ownchildren'sbook,"FiveFeathers."Intriguedbythepotentialof paper, she delved into quilling, quickly mastering its traditional shapes before daring to push the art form's boundaries Quilling is the art of cutting, rolling and curling narrow strips of paper formingthemintoshapesthenlayingthemontheedgetocreate beautiful intricate designs It did not take long for her to challenge herself to push the art form Her self-supporting 3D sculpture,"TheShellMerchant,"earnedherthehighestaccolades at a national convention, igniting a passion that continues to evolve

"Ilookforchallengesandwaystotakepaperarttothenextlevel It is truly inspiring to witness the reactions of first-time viewers People have no idea what can be accomplished by finessing paper into unexpected and familiar images I absolutely love to hear the words, "This is paper?" uttered with surprise Kitt has found motivation and fulfilment in introducing paper art to the community and is teaching workshops She hopes people see her work as more than just a craft but rather appreciate it as fine art, findingthebeauty, peace, andjoyinherartwork.

Being a self-taught artist without formal training, she often struggled with imposter syndrome. While struggling with health concerns, Kitt stopped by the Vault Art Gallery, where the staff surprised Kitt with news that her piece "Trust is Earned" was selected for the front cover of Art St Lucie Magazine Winter|Spring 2024 Issue. She was ecstatic! She stated "The re-

cognition of my work has greatly increased my confidence. I feel accepted as a member of the art community rather than someone standingoutsidelookingin"

To aspiring artists, Kitt offers sage advice: embrace expression, release fear, and pursue the joy of creation without chasing perfection For Kitt, art is not just about technique —it's about sharing stories, evoking emotions, and leaving a lasting impression on the world Through her journey, she invites us all to embrace the freedom of selfexpression.

n contemporary art, Peter Azzopardi pops out as an experimental artist, blending elements of popular culture, classical influences, and personal storytelling to create mesmerizing

works of art Peter's journey starts in London, where he initially started as a painter working with acrylics for over twenty years However, Peter never considered himself an outstanding painter and struggled with blending He did not let that stop him He persisted in making art and relocated to Florida in 2019 Driven by his unwavering passion for self-expression, Peter started experimenting more with his artwork

A pivotal moment in Peter's career came when he began incorporating wooden blocks into his artwork Inspired by his father's background in woodworking, Peter embarked on a journey of experimentation, initially creating wooden flags before finding his niche in creative wooden mosaics Once Peter started creating wooden mosaics, he couldn't stop!

Among Peter's most cherished creations is his tribute to the iconic David Bowie This piece is also one of his most challenging. Being such a huge fan, he felt afraid to let him down "They say we are our

Contemporary, unique, and avant-garde are just a few words that encapsulate Peter's artistic style. Drawing inspiration from both the mainstream and the unconventional, he explores the depths of popular culture while infusing his work with a classical twist Peter is influenced by iconic figures such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso. His art invites viewers on a journey of discovery and thought-provoking conversations

Drawing inspiration from the beauty surrounding him, Peter remains motivated to create, finding inspiration in the most unexpected places For aspiring artists embarking on their own creative journey, Peter offers sage advice: don't be afraid to experiment, embrace criticism, and never shy away from pushing the boundaries of artistic expression His journey serves as a testament to the power of experimentation, perseverance, and the transformative potential of art.

The newest acquisition to the A.E. Backus Museum’s permanent collection is not the typical landscape vista collectors have long prized and that are so often the showcase of the “dean of Florida Landscape Painting.” Instead, it is a dynamic and vibrant portrait that is emblematic of a key part of the Backus history and legacy

A E “Bean” Backus (1906-1990) is wellremembered for his love of jazz music The creative environment of his open studio was fashioned as a Bohemian-styled hangout, regularly featuring live jazz performances and attracting people from all walks of life for conversation, friendly debate, music, and of course, art

Tenor Man was painted in 1946 by the artist in the months following his honorable discharge from Navy service in World War II When he came back home to Fort Pierce and immediately opened up his first home studio, people like his friend Buddy Newell (depicted playing the tenor saxophone in this painting) and a diverse assembly of others were invited to enliven the scene with their musical talents Over the years, Backus’s “happenings” would draw art and music lovers from all over to the banks of Moore’s Creek

Many recall that Bean’s favorite musician was Duke Ellington, but his second favorite might have been saxophonist Johnny Hodges The story goes that Backus was in mourning for two weeks when he learned of Hodges’s death in 1970

Today we might think of jazz music as accessible, ubiquitous, or non-controversial But it wasn’t so long ago that this distinctly American musical genre, animated by inclusion and improvisation, was considered radical by some. For Backus, jazz was the soundtrack for his lived example of diversity and inspiration This painting helps tell the story of the beginning of these classic years and illustrates how Backus first composed the elements of his creative life to engage, enlighten, and bring people together

The Museum is grateful to the many donors who have come forward with contributions large and small to add this important work to the Museum’s collection If you would like to make a contribution, you can do so here: https://www backusmuseum org/heartfor-art

Havana: A Captivating City Captured with My iPhone©

My recent trip to Havana, Cuba, Feb 2024, was unlike any other. A week adventure filled with vibrant colors, rich history, and the captivating spirit of the Cuban people. I embarked on a first-time journey to capture the essence of Havana Cuba using strictly my iPhone.

This unique trip was led by my good friend of 15 years, Jack Hollingsworth, a renowned iPhoneographer. His goal was to challenge us to see Havana through our iPhones only. I captured over 6,000 images of Havana's classic cars, historical architecture, and the resilience of its people - with my iPhone 15 Pro Max©. Our days were spent roaming the streets of Old Havana. Everywhere I turned, there was a scene begging to be captured. The challenge? Narrowing down the endless possibilities.

As the trip came to an end, I bid farewell to Havana and my friends with a time-lapse sunset capture, reflecting on the connections made and the city's enduring allure. Havana's beauty is undeniable, but it's the spirit of its people that truly captivated me, leaving me eager to return and explore its magic once more, one iPhone capture at a time.
