brings national leaders to South Dakota

A

fter an interval of five years, South Dakota artists, arts advocates and administrators, art lovers and community leaders who recognize the value of our cultural heritage will join together for a two-day State Arts Conference. Scheduled for May 4-5 in downtown Sioux Falls, the conference, hosted by the South Dakota Arts Council, Arts South Dakota and the Sioux Falls Arts Council, brings to the state two powerful voices for the arts in our country, Jane Chu, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, and Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy for the national arts advocacy group Americans for the Arts. Chu and Cohen will each present a keynote address, one on each day of the conference.

Chu, who will deliver her keynote address on Saturday in the Falls Ballroom at the Holiday Inn City Centre, is the eleventh chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. With a background in arts administration NEA Chairman Jane Chu visited Freeman in September and philanthropy, Chu is also an of 2014 to learn more about the Arts/Earth Center.

During Chu’s tenure to date, the NEA has awarded more than $377 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and artists; issued new research reports on arts participation and the impact of the arts and cultural industries on the nation’s gross domestic product and has traveled to all 50 states, visiting hundreds of communities across the nation to see first-hand how the arts are impacting people and places.

“South Dakota has a wide range of ways to be engaged in the arts, from the classical arts and folk and traditional, to creative writing, dance and ways to enliven a community’s vitality,” Chu said. “It’s clear that the arts in South Dakota celebrate the state’s innovation and advancement, and also honor the traditions that represent the state.”

Cohen, an expert in the field of arts funding, research, policy and using the arts to address community development issues, published Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy for Americans for the Arts.

Americans Speak Out About the Arts, a national study about public opinions in the arts. He also publishes The National Arts Index, the annual measure of the health and vitality of arts, as well as the two premier economic studies of the arts industry: Arts & Economic Prosperity, the national impact study of nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences, and Creative Industries, an annual mapping study of the nation’s 675,000 arts establishments and their employees. Cohen’s address will be part of the conference’s opening reception, Friday, May 4.

“We are finding new ways to remind ourselves of the fundamental impact the arts have in our lives—including the growing body of research about the ability of the arts to cut across all ages, demographics and socio-economic classifications,” Cohen said. “It will be great to be back in South Dakota, a state with great art and great leaders. I always come home inspired from my trips to South Dakota and I’m sure the 2018 State Arts Conference will be no exception.”

Conference sessions offer inspiration, practical knowledge

The State Arts Conference is also a place to learn and network with experts in South Dakota’s cultural community. A variety of practical learning sessions will be offered during

the conference, with opportunities to acquire new skills to impact the arts in communities throughout the state.

On Saturday morning, May 5, Janet Brown will present The Arts for a Changing Time. What does a successful arts organization look like in 2018? With changing demographics, the impact of technology and younger generations seeking more hands-on involvement, how are we planning, operating and programming for the future? Brown, a South Dakota arts leader and past president and CEO of Grantmakers in the Arts, a national arts funders association, will speak on the trends and realities of today’s nonprofit arts sector, focusing on engaging community, supporting artists and strengthening organizations.

“Today’s environment has challenged the arts sector to make some interesting choices,” Brown said. “The structures and programs of the past 40 years may not be effective any longer due to growing competition for people’s time and entertainment dollars, and generational trends and changing demographics.”

One of the best parts of the State Arts Conference is the chance to network with others who are passionate about the arts in South Dakota. Arts South Dakota’s new front door is always open!

Modern websites connect users to information, but the new Arts South Dakota website is so much more, according to Shari Kosel, Program and Communications Director for the organization.

“Arts South Dakota is ‘bicoastal’ as Executive Director Jim Speirs says, with offices on the east and west sides of the state,” Kosel said. “So we don’t have a front door, a main office. Our website IS our front door and your entry into everything arts in South Dakota.”

Using the site is a breeze, with a navigation bar that’s always with you, “floating” as you scroll through pages. That means every page in the website will be accessible no matter where you are at the moment.

“We sought the help of professionals to organize and make our website pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate with tons of information at your fingertips,” Kosel said. “We use art from South Dakota artists, clean, modern design and state-of-the-art accessibility to make a website that connects you to the whole arts scene in our state.”

The website, ArtsSouthDakota.org, was developed and designed by NewOver, a Sioux Falls-based brand design and mobile development company. Dave Medema, the NewOver web developer, said that understanding the purpose of a good website is the first step.

“A website is a canvas, a form of expression,” he said. “Most importantly, a good website is a tool—but it has to be a multi-tasking tool. How do you build the website to allow it to do ALL the jobs?”

The NewOver team approaches building a website like building a house—and that starts with listening to the needs of the eventual site owner and operator. Once the parameters and functionality of the site are established, Dave and his wife and partner, designer Cassie Medema, can start making it look good and ensuring its ease of use.

“Good design is more than the visual things,” Cassie Medema said. “It’s like cooking in someone else’s kitchen—you have to know where to look, so placement of the essential elements is a key factor. You need to make it look different, but still functional for everyone.

Father and son artists Gerald and Jim Yellowhawk are showing their work in a new exhibit, Ate Chinhintku Kici Wakpazopi, on display through March 17 in the Ruth Brennan Gallery at the Dahl Arts Center in downtown Rapid City—the first father and son show the Dahl has presented.

The Yellowhawks are both South Dakota artists and enrolled members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe who share their love of Lakota culture in all their art forms.

In addition to being a life-long self-taught artist, Gerald is a retired, ordained minister fluent in Lakota. Drawing and painting since childhood, Gerald found his subject matter in the outdoors and the four legged and winged friends that share his world. A profound influence in Gerald’s life has been his grandfather and spiritual leader, Elk Head.

Gerald’s son Jim is a professional artist who works in two and three-dimensional mediums. He has studied the work of Oscar Howe, whose art has been a strong influence on his decision to pursue art as a professional career. Jim Yellowhawk challenges himself to use different materials in order to accurately communicate to the viewer using humor, which has always existed in Lakota culture, as a form of healing. When Yellowhawk’s wife passed away from cancer, he found the strength to continue with his artwork, realizing it was helping him heal from the loss.

ach year the South Dakota Arts Council selects a group of South Dakota artists to receive the Artist Fellowship grant rewarding individual artistic excellence. The $5,000 Fellowships, awarded following an extensive review by a judging panel, reflect the variety and quality of art being produced in South Dakota. Each issue of Arts Alive will feature a conversation with one of the most recent Artist Fellows.

Singer-songwriter Jami Lynn Olson first gained an appreciation for music on a small stage in Peever, SD. An avid performer of bluegrass and folk music, she brings her exuberance and musical talent into the classroom and onto the stage. A graduate of the University of South Dakota, Olson has shared her talent and love of local folk history with audiences across the Midwest, Southeast and Pacific Northwest and in three full-length albums of folk songs and originals.

Arts Alive: What will this Fellowship mean to you as an artist and a musician?

Jami Lynn: This Artist Fellowship has allowed me to take my

music in new directions, and take chances with two new projects: a collaborative jazz album and a project I’m calling “Dakota Duets,” which you’ll hopefully be hearing more about in the next few months. Both projects allow me to involve a lot of other people in the creative and recording process, which is so much fun for me.

I think the results reflect that.

Music is clearly a big part of your life. How has performing, writing and collaborating shaped your career and your art?

Music allows me to connect with other people on a much deeper level than just speaking with them or spending time together. They let me in, and I’m really honored by that. Music also allows me to explore the world around me, especially the natural world. Each

facet of making music has influenced me in different ways.

Performing and collaborating go hand in hand for me of late.

Anytime I get to work with another musician, I’m introduced to new ideas and I’m compelled to play things differently. I think this is why I’m still making original music and I still have things I want to say. Writing is in a different category. It’s not only therapeutic, it really is the basis for the career that I have.

What are the biggest influences on your music?

My biggest influences are the natural world around me and local history, especially my own family. South Dakota is a huge part of that. The landscapes and stories of this place are so interesting and beautiful to me. It doesn’t ever get old. I have new favorite spots all the time.

What are your artistic goals for the next year?

Collaboration! For a good number of years, I have primarily recorded and performed as a solo artist. It really is time for a change.

Singer-songwriter Eliza Blue and I have touring and recording plans for our duo, The Nesters. And though I just released a new album in October with Andrew Reinartz (with some help from members of The JAS Quintet), we haven’t been able to perform much of the album yet. We’re really looking forward to performing at JazzFest, Riverfest and a few album release concerts in the eastern part of the state in April. Finally, I’m looking forward to fading into the background a bit more often (literally) with my new project “Dakota Duets.” There are so many talented local musicians that I haven’t had the opportunity to work with in any capacity. This Fellowship has allowed me to do just that. Over the next few months, I’ll be releasing duet recordings with people from across the state.

This project has been especially fun because I get to step out of the spotlight and learn how to compliment what others are doing. It’s a completely different skill set, and has been so rewarding.

Making the Northern Hills ring Musical diversity fills historic opera house

The ongoing restoration of the historic structure has provided a focal point for arts events in and around the historic city of Lead.

The Black Hills Cowboy Christmas concerts and dance celebrated its eighth year and caused a bit of a stir on Main Street in Lead, filling the street from morning to night on Saturday, December 9, 2017. More than 1,000 attendees packed the Historic Homestake Opera House to attend the two shows of the annual holiday performing arts event. Both the matinee and the evening performances sold out a week before the event date.

Dozens of community volunteers assisted in this popular community event, put together by well-known cowboy musician Paul Larson of Rochford and Homestake Opera House staff. The powerhouse talents of award-winning musicians Kenny Putnam, Boyd Bristow and Jami Lynn were included in the showcase, which has been performed every year since 2010 in various local locations— but now is based at the Homestake Opera House in Lead.

Next year’s event will be held at the Opera House on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 2 pm and 7:30 pm with a dance to follow, and the $35 tickets are available well ahead of time. Gift certificates are also available by calling 605-584-2067. The 2017 Black Hills Cowboy Christmas was sponsored in part by the South Dakota Arts Council Challenge Grant through the SD Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts, Black Hills Badlands Tourism Association, Northern Hills Dental/Reid Stone DDS, KEVN Black Hills Fox TV and First Gold Hotel & Casino, with the support from the City of Lead and the Adams Mastrovich Family Foundation.

The flexibility of the Opera House stage and audience was illustrated when 40 talented musicians from the Black Hills Symphony Chamber Orchestra performed for the first time as a group on the stage of the Historic Homestake Opera House on Sunday, January 7,

2018. The event was truly historic as it was the kickoff for restoration of the theater stage and support of the upcoming project that includes the restoration of the plasterwork angel figures at the top of the stage.

The Epiphany Concert: Angels Project concert brought an appreciative audience to enjoy the sounds of the chamber orchestra and the grand acoustics experienced in the theater for 104 years.

The Homestake Opera House was built by the Homestake Gold Mine in 1914 by Phoebe Hearst to improve the quality of life for immigrant miner workers and their families. This concert provided a glimpse of the history of the building and its impact in the Black Hills region as a whole during a time of industry and growth in the early 1900s.

The project has been a goal of the Homestake Opera House and community for decades after a fire in the theater in 1984. With the recently completed restoration of the two lower north and south walls of the interior of the theater, much progress has been made in advocacy and awareness of this South Dakota performing arts venue treasure.

This summer, the Black Hills Opry brings a down-home classic country showcase to the Homestake Opera House on Lead’s Main Street once a month from May 2018 through August. It’s a South Dakota Saturday Night Experience for a $20 ticket, hosted by Aces & Eights classic country trio of Kim Bachman, Harland Allen and Pegie Douglas. Guest performers include Billboard country music chart-topper Shane Owens and award-winning Midwest musicians, songwriters and singers. The 2018 dates for Black Hills Opry are May 19, June 23, July 14 and August 18.

The arts are alive in De Smet as the tradition of bringing cultural events to this Little Town on the Prairie grows and flourishes. The community of 1,100 residents doesn’t rest on its laurels of bringing the Little House books to life with the outdoor Laura Ingalls Wilder pageant, held every year for nearly 50 years. De Smet continues to build on the community’s cultural heritage of both acclaimed author Wilder and internationally famous artist Harvey Dunn. An events center and theater have been built to provide more facilities and more opportunities

fter spending more than 20 years helping to grow the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society and its signature event, JazzFest, executive director Rob Joyce is retiring.

He began his association with the organization as a piano player, helping to raise money for Jazz & Blues programming, then joined the board of directors in 1994. While JazzFest had been held a few years before then, locking in a place and date for the festival became a key to its growth, Joyce said.

“When I joined the board, we wanted to find a home for JazzFest—a location that would allow us to grow and have an infrastructure to utilize and develop,” he remembered.

“We chose Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls and the third weekend of July—and we’ve stuck with that ever since.”

JazzFest originally booked some local artists along with contemporary jazz artists that were nationally known. Joyce brought a wellspring of knowledge and connections to the organization that served it well during the developing years of JazzFest.

“Since I was the host of Sunday Night Jazz on KELO FM radio, I had a strong knowledge of artists,” Joyce said. “I was able to reach agents and record labels pretty easily and develop relationships with them. Soon we realized that blues artists were extremely popular for selling beer and getting large crowds.”

That awareness brought changes, starting in 2001 when Jazz & Blues booked the Neville Brothers. Well known even by non-jazz fans, the act brought in crowds in excess of 25,000 people for their set. In 2012, another milestone was reached with headliner Joe Walsh, then Sheryl Crow the following year, bringing the JazzFest three-day attendance totals to over 125,000 people. Joyce has a few words of advice he shares with people who ask him the way to create a festival as popular as JazzFest.

“Start small,” he said. “It can take years to grow into a large event. Find supporters, find a few good volunteers. Share your passion and demonstrate that you are good at organizing an event that is fun and safe. Soon you’ll see more people, more sponsors and more excitement. Then stand back and watch it take off.”

Shakespeare Festival announces sixth season The clash of swords, the soaring ambition of kings and the immortal language of William Shakespeare come to Prentis Park in Vermillion this summer in Richard III. The South Dakota Shakespeare Festival’s first history play, this classic is the showcase for the group’s sixth season in Vermillion.

The festival organization will host its annual fundraising event, “Wine with Will” on February 22 at the John A. Day Gallery in the Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Arts at USD. Tickets for this event are $50 per person and include wine and hors d’oeuvre tastings, live music, Shakespeare performances and a silent auction. Richard III comes to life June 7-10 in Prentis Park in a gripping tale of political intrigue as Richard, Duke of Gloucester, entices audiences to join him on his treacherous climb to power.

Even in this digital age of email, text and social media, we all recognize the value of face to face conversation. Whether it’s around the dinner table, over the back fence or in a meeting with opinions flying, getting together in one place is the best way to exchange ideas, forge relationships and create a shared perspective.

During our statewide fact-finding tour, staff members of the South Dakota Arts Council and Arts South Dakota heard over and over that we need to create more opportunities for our state’s arts community to meet face to face. The success of the last statewide arts conference is still fresh in people’s minds—but it’s been five years and it’s time to get together once again.

That’s what this year’s State Arts Conference May 4-5 in Sioux Falls is all about— getting together, person to person, to share our enthusiasm for the arts, network with national and state leaders in creative culture and build South Dakota’s arts community.

Ours is a large and diverse state, with geography occasionally an obstacle to face to face conversation. A state conference gives us a chance to focus on topics that mean something to all of us and help plan for the future by exploring where we are today.

This conference promises to be an exciting couple of days, with top arts professionals and leaders from the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the Arts speaking and sharing their time and knowledge with our state’s arts community. The chance to network with Jane Chu, Randy Cohen, Janet Brown and others is an opportunity to make our local successes and challenges part of the national conversation about the arts in America.

This is the arts event of the year in South Dakota, with helpful and practical learning sessions, exciting art, and performances and presenters who really are the best in their fields. So let’s get together, friends and neighbors in the arts. Make your plans to be in Sioux Falls May 4 and 5 and share the excitement by lending your voice to the conversation. We think it will be a conversation to remember!

Watercolor painting is opening artistic doors to a wide variety of people, thanks to the newly formed Great Plains Watercolor Society. The group, which quickly reached 60 members within three weeks of its founding, is based in Sioux Falls but has members in other communities who participate in its world-class seminars and events.

The organization arose when art teacher Barbara Sparks realized that eastern South Dakota didn’t have its own watercolor painting group. She had been experiencing the excitement students felt in her classes when they discovered something new about themselves.

“I often find myself teaching watercolor to people who were told in second grade that they would never become artists,”she said.“But watercolor class leads to an ‘aha!’ moment. The light that appears in their eyes is the reason I teach.”

Sioux Falls Arts Council executive director Kara Dirkson helped bring together a few dynamic women who wanted to create art.

Janice Bartels, Great Plains Watercolor Society president, founded the Women’s Conference in Pierre and managed the Rodeo Museum; Sheryl Baloun, the group’s secretary, started the Festival of Books in South Dakota; vice president Jeannie Ammon founded the Women’s Healing Garden in Dell Rapids, and Sharon Weber, chairman of national events, was instrumental in the Homebuilders Association.

“These were the people who came together to make sure the organization is valuable to all artists in South Dakota,” Sparks said.

When photographer Jayne Erickson joined the group and offered the use of her Mosaic studio for Great Plains Watercolor Society meetings and painting events, the stage was set for rapid growth and for seminars that attracted regional participation.

“We have members from Watertown, Brookings, Pierre and parts of Iowa,” Sparks said, “and Barbara Sparks we’re actively participating in paintleads a class at ing activities in those communities, Mosaic studio. raising funds to benefit the arts there. Not all of our members can attend every meeting, but they do come for workshops and events.”

Those events include a February two-day workshop with artist Jennifer Stone exploring “Watercolor Pours,” and a March event with artist Kristin Peterson sharing the use of mixed media in creating water-based art.

A November three-day workshop with artist Alexis Lavine sold out within hours of its announcement thanks to the use of social media.

The group’s website, www.greatplainswatercolorsociety.com, is administered by Sparks, with programming and scheduling by all the organizational officers.

Great Plains Watercolor Society holds monthly meetings and “paint-ins” throughout each month, when attendees can work on their own projects. Often the paint-ins will be organized around one topic, with a member of the group sharing a skill with friends. That sharing of enthusiasm and love of creating art is a major element in the success of the group, Sparks said.

“I have led learning sessions for the group,” she said, “but often I’ve found that my friends in the Watercolor Society have advanced to the point where I learn things from them.”

While the rapid growth of the society is gratifying to organizers, Sparks said they are in it for the long term.

“We’re looking to the next year, planning programs to build the organization,” she said. “We want to take care of our members, support artists and make the society strong and long-lasting.”

In the nonprofit world, we do a lot of asking: for financial support from public and private sources, for leadership and guidance from volunteer boards of directors, for serious consideration of proposals by granting agencies and review panels, for direct help with operations from a typically volunteer (or underpaid) staff, for the ears of decision makers when it comes to advocating for our causes. The same goes for the art world when it comes to the ask: for wall/gallery space, for audiences, for grant and other financial support, for all kinds of assistance in making visions become realities and tangible works of art.

We’ve become skilled at asking for help, and that’s a good thing. I can almost hear parents advising their child, “You’ll never be able to accomplish anything worthwhile in life if you’re too proud or afraid to ask for help.” But to take another cue from the Parenting 101 manual, gratitude is one of the cornerstones of a healthy and happy existence. So I’d like to take this opportunity to start 2018 by offering sincere appreciation to legislators and other leaders across the state for their consistent support of the South Dakota Arts Council throughout the past 51 years, allowing us to do what we do best: serving all the residents of this state and their communities through the arts.

Thank you very much for: ● Legislating us into existence in 1966, fast upon the heels of the creation of the National Endowment for the Arts. ● Allowing us to help support the creation of community arts councils to foster artists and the arts at the local level. ● Supporting the creation over four decades ago of two of the Arts Council’s signature programs, Touring Arts and Artists In Schools & Communities, that take artists and teaching artists into every corner of the state, helping to create accessibility to the arts for all residents. ● Matching the federal funds we apply for and receive from the NEA on an annual basis to make quality arts accessible throughout the state by providing encouragement, grants, services and information to artists, arts organizations, schools and the public. ● Giving the state arts agency a seat at the table when it comes to discussing how fine arts should fit into the well-rounded education of South Dakota students. ● Recognizing the importance of sharing South Dakota art with the public by supporting the creation of the Art for State Buildings program in 2007. ● Seeing fit to assign a dedicated revenue source to the state arts agency for financial stability to carry out our mission on an annual basis. ● Listening to and engaging us in discussion about the value of the arts and public support every year during the Legislative Session through Arts Advocacy Day at the Capitol.

The search for Scandinavian folkways New initiative joins established programs

The South Dakota Arts Council’s Folk and Traditional Arts Program is in the midst of an exciting time, with several new initiatives in the works to complement our regular programs. Our ongoing Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program is continuing successfully, with apprenticeships featuring a wide variety of South Dakota traditional arts, representative of the breadth and diversity of both cultural heritage and creative folk culture across the state.

This year, we have master artists working with apprentices throughout the state. Annikki Martilla is teaching Finnish rya weaving in Frederick, Molina Parker is sharing her skills at Lakota beadworking in Rapid City, Dallas Chief Eagle is sharing Lakota hoop dancing in Martin and Bill Peterson is keeping Missouri Valley style fiddling alive in Canton. Master artists continue working with their apprentices through the end of June. Applications for the FY19 apprenticeship grants are now being accepted, and more information can be viewed at our website, www.artscouncil.sd.gov.

The Traditional Arts Program is also embarking on an all-new project for the upcoming year. We have recently received a grant from the AmericanScandinavian Foundation to research and document South Dakota’s Scandinavian folklife. To that end, I will be conducting fieldwork this spring in South Dakota to document the traditions associated with the descendants of immigrants Brenda Rud from Norway, Sweden, demonstrates rosemaling.

I will be focusing primarily on southeastern South Dakota, as well as the Aberdeen and Frederick area. These regions have a long history of settlement by Scandinavian immigrants. Frederick is home to an historic Finnish community which holds an annual Finn Fest celebration. Meanwhile, the Swedish community in Clay County will be holding its 149th annual Midsommar celebration at Dalesburg this year, while in Viborg, the local Danish community organizes a Danish Days festival. The Norwegian community in the region, whose settlement process was immortalized in O. E. Rolvaag’s novel Giants in the Earth, is represented by several area Sons of Norway Lodges in Aberdeen, Canton, Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Yankton.

I expect to meet folks who practice traditional Scandinavian arts including traditional music, Finnish rya weaving, Norwegian woodworking, rosemaling, hardanger embroidery, various foodways traditions, maypole and other traditional dances, Norwegian chorus, Scandinavian vernacular building traditions such as Finnish saunas and a variety of other traditions that I am not yet aware of. I have recently begun the process of asking various organizations and individuals for suggestions of traditional artists and culture bearers that I should interview for this project. ARTS ADVOCACY DAY

Arts Advocacy Day at the Legislature serves to heighten awareness and appreciation of the arts for our legislators.

The celebration of South Dakota’s rich cultural heritage, held this year on February 8, included a performance by Pierre’s T.F. Riggs Chamber Choir, singing a cappella music in a variety of different styles during the noon hour. The South Dakota Arts Council and Arts South Dakota served refreshments during the performance, and presented information about the arts to legislators and state officials, along with notecards featuring art from the Congressional High School Art Competition winners.

Local voices hit national stage

South Dakota Chorale wins multiple Grammy nominations he South Dakota Chorale has been nominated for a 2018 Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for the group’s latest recording, Tyberg Masses. The album was also nominated in the categories of Best Surround Sound Album, Best Engineered Album-Classical and is part of the Producer of the Year-Classical nominations, all in collaboration with Soundmirror in Boston. The recording was made at First Plymouth Congregational Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The music of Marcel Tyberg, a church musician and composer killed in the holocaust, has only recently been rediscovered. The South Dakota Chorale’s concerts and recording are the first time the choral works have been heard since Tyberg’s death. In anticipation of his capture and possible deportation, the composer entrusted all of his compositions and personal writings to his friend, Dr. Milan Mihich, whose son Enrico brought the collection to Buffalo, NY, where it remained largely unnoticed until recently. In 2008, the Buffalo Philharmonic gave the highly acclaimed world premiere of Tyberg’s Third Symphony more than 60 years after its composition.

by Tyberg. As part of the ongoing mission of The Tyberg Project to bring this previously silenced music to life, the South Dakota Chorale album was released internationally on the Pentatone label.

considered to be one of the largest and most versatile symphonic organs in the country.

Based in Sioux Falls, the South Dakota Chorale is a collaborative network of musicians combining the talents of singers locally, regionally and across the nation. In the group’s eight-year history, the Chorale has developed educational collaborations with high school choirs, led enriching master classes with pre professional/collegiate singers, partnered with local arts series to build support and awareness for the arts, initiated a guest conductor residency and released three commercial recordings in collaboration with producer Blanton Alspaugh.

The Chorale has been the invited guest of the Iowa Choral Directors Association and the American Choral Directors National Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, with performances at Abravanel Hall and the Mormon Tabernacle.

South Dakota Chorale singers represent a wide range of professional-level singers with day jobs in other disciplines, as well as collegiate voice teachers and choral conductors and others who make their daily living singing opera and oratorio around the country.

At press time, the Chorale was awaiting the results from the annual Grammy ceremony. The nomination itself shows the quality of the performing group and the dedication the singers have to presenting world-class choral music.
