A PURPOSEFUL PARTNERSHIP

S

Arts Journal shows that we are one

outh Dakota is akin to one big city that just happens to be sprawled across 50 million acres of prairie. We witnessed our togetherness a few months ago when the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits competed for a national football championship. Suddenly we were all Jackrabbits. Sports brought us together in January. In every month of every year, the arts do the same. Even as differences threaten to divide us, the arts constantly connect us. They inspire us. They challenge us to cherish our traditions and shared values — and to consider new ideas and perspectives.

That’s why a partnership was formed one year ago with the purpose of recognizing and celebrating our rich heritage. Staff members of the South Dakota Arts Council, the nonprofit Arts South Dakota and South Dakota Magazine now team up to produce an annual publication called the Arts Journal. Its purpose is to help South Dakotans and interested persons across the USA fully appreciate our diverse arts community. The author C.S. Lewis once said, “We read to know we are not alone.” The second annual Arts Journal is enclosed with this issue of South Dakota Magazine. Its stories and pictures show that, thanks in large part to the arts, we are not alone.
