s I sat on my flight back to Washington, DC, from South Dakota, I couldn’t help but marvel at the vast and beautiful landscape that I had the privilege to travel this past week. Thanks to my colleague Patrick Baker, executive director of the South Dakota Arts Council, we covered a good deal of ground—832 miles to be exact— visiting a total of nine cities, towns and tribal communities in just three days. With meetings in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Faulkton, Eagle Butte, Pierre, Porcupine, Pine Ridge and Rapid City, it was an incredible introduction to the state for a first-timer.

It would be nearly impossible to recount all of the conversations, meetings and encounters that took place but I return home with a strong impression that the arts are well integrated into the everyday life of South Dakotans.

You appreciate it driving through on the interstate—the bales of hay dotting the landscape reminding me of the extraordinary work of Harvey Dunn that I experienced at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings. You see it as you pass through small towns like Faulkton and observe murals on towering grain elevators from several miles away.

You understand it when you talk to arts champions like Julie, Rita, Stacy and Jane who hail from Yankton, De Smet, Aberdeen and Sisseton and speak proudly about serving their communities as the leaders—sometimes as volunteers—of their local arts councils.

You experience it touring through exhibitions like the Red Cloud Indian Art Show at the Heritage Center in the Pine Ridge Reservation or taking in the art lining the walls of the Capitol Building in Pierre. You are overwhelmed by its presence, importance and mission when visiting Cheyenne River Youth Project in Eagle Butte. You are inspired by it when visiting with the team at Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation in Porcupine and learning about the innovative projects that First Peoples Fund has initiated like the Rolling Rez Arts mobile arts space.

The arts are omnipresent in South Dakota and these arts leaders are helping shape, define, inspire and guide arts and culture throughout the state.

I am grateful to all those I had the chance to meet along the way. Special thanks to Jim Speirs and Andrew Reinartz of Arts South Dakota and to Janet Brown for encouraging my visit and helping arrange my first day in Sioux Falls. I was truly amazed at how—in a state that is predominately rural—the arts play a central role in everyday life. I couldn’t be more proud of the National Endowment for the Arts’ work with the South Dakota Arts Council and all the individual grants we make each year throughout the state.

I leave South Dakota with many visual memories of the natural beauty of the state and also of my very first glimpse of South Dakota Artist Laureate Dale Lamphere’s sculpture Arc of Dreams as a reminder that there are endless possibilities for the arts in South Dakota.

En Route to Lakota understanding Workshop shares cultural touchstones Arts South Dakota partnered with CAIRNS, the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies, for En Route, a three-day traveling workshop led by Dr. Craig Howe and CAIRNS educators on Native Lands and Arts June 24-26. The idea of being “en route” grows from the premise that peoples and places are interwoven in a complex relationship. The geographic focus of the workshop was a small portion of the traditional homelands of the Lakota people, including Mato Paha (Bear Butte), Cankpe Opi (Wounded Knee), Wasun Niya (Wind Cave) and Pe’Sla (Reynolds Prairie).

The intention of the workshop structure was to encourage critical thinking about the intersections of Lakota history, culture, land and art on the one hand, and non-Lakota perspectives of important places and events on the other. The goal is always for a more nuanced awareness of the broader historical and contemporary relationships between American Indians and non-Indians, through an experience of Lakota arts, land and culture.

En Route: a framework of respect

e picked up the printmaker Roger Broer somewhere alongside the highway out of Hill City. He was just standing there amongst the granite, waiting for our bus to come so that he might show us Pe’Sla, one of the seven sites sacred to Lakotas in the cosmological landscape of the Black Hills. The bus turned onto back roads and drove miles deeper into the close pine forest until the land unexpectedly opened up and we were there.

In his book God Is Red, author and historian Vine Deloria, Jr. delineates between European and Indigenous systems of belief along the question of time. In the Western tradition, there once was a time when everything was good—way back in the Garden of Eden—but the first of us did some bad things and so it goes: if we do the right things now, maybe those good times will come back. Native American religion, however, is on the whole tied more strongly to places—places that have borne witness to heroic deeds and foolish missteps from the era of Long Ago to today. Those sites and their long memories remind one how to behave and how to avoid misbehavior, how to bond oneself to the deep history of a specific ecosystem, and that the land itself was there before us and will be there long after we’re gone.

The power of En Route comes from standing in those locations that figure in the very story of creation itself and being reminded that they were also witness to the problematic narrative of American expansionism, to court battles for recognition of sovereignty throughout the 20th Century, through the reclamation of Lakota identity, and that they are still there to watch over the successes and struggles of our own complex moment. As an artist and one who cares about a more thoughtful, inclusive South Dakota, it heartens me to know that some 30 people got on a bus together of their own accord to challenge deeply held assumptions and strive for a more nuanced understanding of the state’s cultural heritage. As Dr. Howe stresses, one can not jump to Lakota star knowledge without first being able to name even a single tribal capital. En Route provides a framework of respect: how to be students rather than tourists.

Like the best sacred sites, Pe’Sla is unassuming—a few quartz boulders in an expanse of prairie. Some folks from the bus scattered tobacco, others tried to identify wildflowers, and Jackie pointed out where her grandmother taught her that timpsila grows. And then, of course, one comes to the rocks themselves: shining white and sitting where they’ve sat since the Earth heaved up and made the Hills as something new. Roger said they call down lightning—the ground was scattered with such shards as bolts blast off. “If you have a problem,” he added, “if you need something, tell it to the rocks. They’ll listen.”

He’s right, of course. How could they not?

Artist Fellows Excellence in artistic achievement recognized with Fellowships

In her fourth year as assistant professor of clarinet at Northern State University, Audrey Miller is a passionate and versatile musician, bringing expertise in both classical and contemporary performance styles into her playing. She performs in a trio for clarinet, soprano and piano that presented Life on the Edge at the 2019 International Clarinet Convention in Knoxville, TN. Miller spent the past two summers performing chamber music as an invited guest artist at the Saarburg International Chamber Music Festival and she premiered a piece for oboe and clarinet at Arizona State University.

Miller plans to apply her grant to commissioning new compositions for the clarinet and to a recital tour throughout the region.

outh Dakota is enriched by a strong statewide community of artists—creating, producing, pushing the envelope of our cultural understanding and forging links between past and future artists.

One role of the South Dakota Arts Council is to nurture, encourage and recognize our state’s artists, as well as to make their work better known around South Dakota and the world.

One of the ways in which the state arts agency acknowledges artistic achievement is through the Artist Fellowship grants.

This year, four Artist Fellowships of $5,000 were awarded to South Dakota artists of exceptional talent to recognize past artistic achievement and encourage future artistic growth. In reviewing applications, panelists considered the quality of the applicant’s work, the record of professional activity and achievement, how the Artist Fellowship would contribute to the artist’s professional growth and career at this time and each artist’s potential for contribution to higher standards for the arts in South Dakota.

Recipients of the 2019 South Dakota Artist Fellowships are musicians Audrey Miller and Yi-Chun Lin, sculptor Becky Grismer and traditional artist Kevin Locke.

Yi-Chun Lin, the viola principal of South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, is also the founder of the Sioux Falls Chamber Music Collective.

She successfully launched several artistic collaborations and chamber music series with different artists and musicians to encourage collaborations between artists/musicians and to bridge arts disciplines.

Lin created the Latte series at Queen City Bakery in Sioux Falls to give fun performances regularly to introduce different types of music to audiences in a friendly environment easily accessible to everyone. With her fellowship, Lin plans to create artistic presentations with other creative minds, and continue developing her own professional growth while sharing with the community.

Living and working in the Black Hills, Becky Grismer’s work revolves around themes relating to her interest in human attributes and natural surroundings. Grismer’s work includes hybrid forms that exist in places of transition— the in-between spaces in life.

Primarily a sculptor, she uses natural materials such as tree bark, stone and clay, but also works in a variety of media to create two-dimensional works. Grismer said the Artist Fellowship will make a significant impact on her career by helping complete studio upgrades planned for this year, having her recent body of work professionally photographed and continuing to create and exhibit. See an interview with Grismer on page 8 of this issue.

For the past 40 years, Kevin Locke has demonstrated, organized and taught Lakota hoop dance and Indigenous flute making and playing workshops in the Standing Rock community, across South Dakota, throughout the United States and around the world. Locke’s workshops are geared toward social change for rural Indigenous populations, and primarily youth, with a goal to reconnect them with their ancestral spiritual heritage, specifically in the Dakotas. The Artist Fellowship will allow Locke to contribute to bridging the gaps in advancing human civilization.

Vermillion students play Edinburgh Fringe Festival Begley takes mime show to international arts expo When theater artist and educator Mary Begley responded to an application sent her by the American High School Theater Festival over a year ago, she didn’t know it would lead to two trips to Edinburgh, Scotland and the experience of a lifetime.

Begley, who has taught theater at Vermillion High School for 19 years, had been recommended, along with her high school theater program, to the national organization which selects a handful of U.S. secondary schools to participate in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s largest performing arts festival. Created 72 years ago to celebrate the diversity of the arts in the Scots capital, the Fringe Festival is three weeks of theater—mounting 3,841 shows in every available space in Edinburgh—along with art and music.

“I completed the application materials in 2018 and we were selected to participate in the 2019 program,” Begley said. “I was invited to spend a week at the 2018 Fringe Festival to prepare for our experience this year.”

Begley, who was accompanied on her scouting mission by her daughter Ariel, a theater professional from Minneapolis, learned two important lessons on her trip to Edinburgh.

“Taking in as many shows as we could at the 2018 Festival, we discovered that you can’t rely on the quality of sound,” she said.

“You also have to take an entire show overseas in a suitcase. Those two ideas shaped our decision to do a movement show.”

Begley, one of the founders of Discovery Mime Theater, had extensive experience in creating a play without words. Working with her students, Begley wrote Antics, four vignettes centered around ants, with costumes largely constructed of balloons, which travel small and inflate to create antennae and other colorful ant parts.

Writing the play was only one step in preparing for the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. There was fundraising—a lot of fundraising, which the Vermillion community supported completely, Begley said—along with rehearsals for Antics in the middle of the normal high school schedule.

Finally, on July 27, the troupe flew into London for a few days of sightseeing before traveling to Edinburgh for four performances on an assigned stage. As one of the 35 casts selected by the American High School Theater Festival, the Vermillion group was

treated to a range of experiences. They participated in an acting workshop at the Royal Shakespeare Company and saw a performance at the historic Globe Theater before embarking on a ten-hour bus ride to Edinburgh.

“We were extremely well cared for,” Begley said. “The American High School Theater Festival provided rehearsal spaces, meals and rooms in dorms at the University of Edinburgh. And we had time to see tons of other performances in addition to staging ours.”

During the two weeks of their stay in Edinburgh, the Vermillion group was expected to promote their show with flyers and streetside performances on the Royal Mile—which led to one of the highlights of the trip.

“We were on city bus, going to a performance, when one of our cast saw a man reading The Scotsman, the local daily paper, with our picture on the front,” Begley said. “When we got off the bus, we bought a paper and there we were, in color, performing our show on the front page of the national newspaper.”

Begley said the experience was a career highlight for her, as well as a testimony to the quality and hard work of the Vermillion theater students.

Connecting

with nature

A conversation with Artist Fellowship recipient Becky Grismer South Dakota Arts Council Fellow Becky Grismer was born and raised in eastern South Dakota. After receiving her B.A. in Fine Art from Northern State University, she lived and worked in St. Paul, MN for several years before returning to South Dakota.

Grismer has exhibited her work in both solo and group shows.

Her work has been included in public collections and can be found in private collections throughout the world. Grismer currently creates her art in Spearfish.

Arts Alive: How has nature and your relationship to the natural world shaped you as an artist and as a person?

Becky Grismer: I use natural materials directly in my

process and the characteristics of those materials inspire me and point me in new directions. I use plants to dye the paper for my mixed media wall pieces. I search for tree bark, stones, dried seeds and berries that I can use to create my sculptures. Nature has shaped me as a person by making me feel connected to the world around me in a significant way. With trees, I’ve found something that I have so much in common with, like meeting a new friend and growing a meaningful relationship with them.

Touching earth/clay/plants makes me feel grounded and calm.

It helps me remember that I’m organic material that is part of the earth. You don’t feel like that if you touch something plastic.

How will this Fellowship affect you and your work?

The Fellowship will allow a lot of things to happen, but one big thing is that it will help me work more efficiently. I’m in the process of renovating a larger studio space. My current space doesn’t allow for multiple work spaces and doesn’t accommodate the size of the work I’m making now, so it slows me down.

Once I move into the new space, I can open up my studio to the community, and that will hopefully open up doors for other people, too. The Fellowship will allow me to take extra time in my studio practice to experiment. Also, my recent body of work has really large pieces and now I will be able to physically transport my large sculptures to other places in and out of the state.

I thought it was so beautiful, especially when they got to the stage where all of the bark was gone and they were bleached white from the sun. I think all of those things about the landscape seeped in and grew with me. South Dakota was where I attended college and learned all of the foundational skills I use to create my art.

Well, I think I plainly just keep going. Keep doing what I’m doing—practicing and trying to grow my technical skills, experimenting, paying attention to the things that stand out to me in the world, volunteering in the South Dakota arts community and continuing to focus on telling my own story. Hopefully that results in genuine expressions of myself that people can connect with.

Has growing up in South Dakota affected your art?

I spent a lot of time playing in tree patches as a kid. I also remember on the way to my grandparents’ house near Onaka and Aberdeen always looking for shelterbelts along the way where I could make a fort if I ever ran away from home.

I was really drawn to flooded areas and liked watching the gradual changes as the trees died and became very stark looking.

Where do you go from here as an artist?

I was very fortunate to receive an Artist Career Development Grant from the Arts Council when I was starting out, and I wouldn’t be where I am without that help.

The Arts Council grants are investing in South Dakota artists, and I’ve gotten to experience just how important that can be for an artist—and how those investments create positive ripples that extend outward into the world.

he passing of Charlotte Carver in early September at the age of 97 seemed like the end of an era for many in the South Dakota arts community. As the founding executive director of the South Dakota Arts Council, Charlotte was a friend of governors, a creator of programs and a valiant—and forceful—defender of the arts in her home state. For over a half century, she was a hands-on arts advocate, and worked tirelessly for the arts in Sioux Falls after her retirement from the state arts agency. Anyone who has worked in the arts during the past 50 years has a memory to share or a story to tell about Charlotte Carver. We remember Charlotte and honor her service in this issue with the words of those who knew her best.

ARTS EDUCATION INSTITUTE logs record attendance

The 20th anniversary edition of the annual Arts Education Institute set new records for participation, according to organizer Shari Kosel from Arts South Dakota.

“This was an exciting year for AEI,” she said. “With 82 people attending 18 workshops led by 13 dynamic instructors, we had a kaleidoscope of arts and educational dialogue all over the Northern State University campus.”

The record numbers enrolled were one indication of the quality of AEI, and post-institute evaluations recorded 66 participants ranking the experience as excellent. Over half that number expressed an interest in expanding the annual event to additional days, with requests for future workshops in more music classes, advanced printmaking and even more elementary school level projects.

Participants were enthusiastic in their overall comments, with remarks such as “In four days, I’ve planned my entire year’s curriculum,” and “I am very content with how much I learned and the amount of hands-on time I got, it was a great experience.”

In its first year, the Band Directors Institute, held concurrently with AEI, attracted 30 music educators, 23 of whom took advantage of the academic credit available. The evaluatory comments from attendees show that the program is a success, with a bright future in coming years.

South Dakota’s legacy of hoop dancing

n a previous Arts Alive column, I discussed our creative aging program, Art For Life, and the fact that arts and healthcare professionals are starting to recognize the connections between an active engagement in the arts and healthy individuals and healthy communities. While this may be a relatively new focus in the arts administration world, in many Native cultures, this has been understood all along. In Lakota culture, the arts have always been considered integral to a healthy lifestyle. The hoop dance in particular, is a healing practice.

Over the past year or so, I’ve had the privilege of spending time with a number of South Dakota hoop dancers, learning about this traditional art form and its history and legacy in the state. Throughout this project, I worked with Kevin Locke of Wakpala, a 1990 National Heritage Fellow; the Chief Eagle family in Kyle, including Dallas Chief Eagle and his daughters Starr Chief Eagle and Delacina Chief Eagle; Jackie Bird of Bushnell, one of the first women to hoop dance; Jack Ovitt of Rapid City, who was an active hoop dancer in the 70s, and Leonard Crow Dog, who hoop danced as a young man before his political and spiritual prominence.

The hoop dance is a representational dance form with a collection of hoops that are made into shapes by the dancer to represent parts of the natural world. Although there is now a Hoop Dance World Championship every year in Arizona, Kevin Locke stresses that the hoop dance is not mere entertainment.

“In the dominant immigrant culture, music is often categorized as entertainment,” Locke said. “It is used to escape one’s everyday, mundane reality. In traditional Indigenous culture, one could say that music and the arts in general are used for the opposite purpose—to connect with reality.”

This is the message of the hoop dance: connection with reality, healing, wholeness and unity. Locke expands on this, describing the hoop dance as a choreographed prayer.

“The hoop dance comes from the real universe, it is like a prayer, us being restored to that,” he said. “The symbolism of the hoop represents harmony, balance and unity. It represents all things good and all things holy. So our prayer [of the hoop dance], is to be restored to that.”

The hoop dance is, in and of itself, a healing practice, so providing an opportunity for traditional art, such as hoop dancing, to thrive is not only an important part of the South Dakota Arts Council’s mission to preserve traditional arts and culture—it is integral to the health and well-being of our communities.

The interviews I conducted about hoop dancing will join the rest of the South Dakota Arts Council’s Folk & Traditional Arts Program collection at the State Archives at the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.

Jana Anderson’s “Blueprint of Obscurity.”

Penumbra exhibition at the Washington Pavilion

Penumbra, a solo exhibition of recent work by Jana Anderson, is open through December 8 in the Visual Arts Center Contemporary Gallery at the Washington Pavilion in downtown Sioux Falls.

The exhibition takes its title from the astronomy term, penumbra, meaning the shadow cast by the earth or moon over an area experiencing a partial eclipse. Anderson’s abstracted collages explore the idea of partial obscurity and cast shadows through a combination of imagery involving the internal body and the external universe.

The abstractions presented are central compositions that utilize layering of materials and haptic surface quality. Her paintings at times feel like looking through the lens of a microscope, and at other times looking through a telescope.

Anderson finds the separation between these two experiences of micro and macro to be collapsing ever closer.

Anderson grew up in Sioux Falls and currently lives and works in Philadelphia. She has exhibited work at the Grunwald Gallery of Art and the Blueline Gallery at Untitled Light, both in Bloomington, IN, as well as The Painting Center in New York and the Minneapolis Groveland Gallery.

he unique gift of Harvey Dunn for portraying people in diverse situations—from prairie gardens to the shell-shattered villages of World War I—is on display at the South Dakota Art Museum in Harvey Dunn: Imagining Others.

Dunn, the son of homesteaders, studied under the tutelage of Ada Caldwell at South Dakota Agricultural College. With the support and encouragement of Caldwell, he continued his studies at the Chicago Art Institute. Dunn became a successful illustrator and teacher, and was one of eight illustrators selected as an official artist for the American Expeditionary Forces during WWI. The South Dakota Art Museum’s Dunn Collection is significant in that it consists of prairie paintings that have become the pride of South Dakota and contains illustrations featured in the Saturday Evening Post and WWI paintings inspired by his contribution to the American Expeditionary Forces. Dunn’s works are nationally regarded not only for their contribution to American illustration, but more specifically, to their documentation of the emotions of early prairie life. The South Dakota Art Museum cares for the world’s largest Harvey Dunn collection with 144 paintings, prints and drawings.

In all his works, Harvey Dunn desired to go beyond the mere depiction of physical likeness, stating: “The spirit is the only thing that is true about anything.

So the expression of this spirit—that is the main thing.”

This exhibition celebrates Dunn’s desire to fully and deeply render truths about humanity. His instruction to students is a fitting lesson: “Feel your picture, get into it, be the character you are painting. Feel his joys, his sorrows, think him, put yourself in his shoes.”

Dahl Arts Center showcases Artists of the Black Hills The diversity of art produced in western South Dakota is on display in the Artists of the Black Hills 14th Annual Exhibition, showing through November 30 in the Sen. Stan Adelstein & Lynda K. Clark Gallery at the Dahl Arts Center in downtown Rapid City.

Artists of the Black Hills is an organization of professional artists, artisans, and galleries who joined together with the common goal of presenting and promoting the Black Hills region as an art destination. Each of the members has been juried into the organization by a selection committee made up of a cross-section of the artists representing the entire body of the membership. The intent of the organization is to make evident the large pool of artistic talent in the Black Hills area and the impact that art has made—and continues to make—on the quality of life in the Black Hills.

There’s no substitute for coming together

This past summer, Arts South Dakota co-hosted a number of Arts Happy Hours around the state, from Hill City to Aberdeen and from Yankton to Faulkton.

Situated in popular local after-hours gathering spots, the events brought neighbors together in an informal atmosphere to share ideas, concerns, program successes and the spirit of collaboration.

In Hill City, a stronger connection with city government and the local Chamber of Commerce resulted from Happy Hour conversations, while the Yankton gathering brought together local arts advocates and college leadership to plan new collaborative efforts. The Aberdeen Happy Hour introduced interested local educators to the Arts Education Institute thanks to an art exhibition by an AEI participant. In Faulkton, famous for its murals, new ideas for public art came together at a Happy Hour meeting with artist Zach DeBoer.

These meetings, and countless others held in communities throughout the state, have two things in common: leadership by involved, active community volunteers and face-to-face conversation among a diverse group of local citizens who care about the quality of life in their community. By being in the same room, showing hometown support and exchanging viewpoints with neighbors, local residents make things happen.

Other Arts Happy Hours are planned for this fall and winter, as community arts councils partner with Arts South Dakota to keep the conversations going.

Creative leaders join Arts South Dakota board

Black Hills native Kenny Putnam’s combined careers in musical performance and visual arts reflect the talent and scope of creativity in South Dakota. He currently owns and operates Image Up Creative Services in Rapid City, imaging artwork and restoring photographs and documents for individuals and institutions. Putnam has, and is performing with popular South Dakota bands that include Red Willow, South Dakota Acoustic Christmas, The Song Pilots, Campfire Concerto and Cowboy Christmas, and his original artwork was recently selected for the Art for State Buildings collection by the South Dakota Arts Council. Putnam was a recipient of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce Legacy Award, a Rushmore Faces Award, and was inducted into the South Dakota Friends of Traditional Music Hall of Fame, the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame and the Legends of Country Music Hall of Fame.

Julie Garreau is the founder and executive director of the Cheyenne River Youth Project (CRYP) in Eagle Butte. A Bush Fellow, she also has earned a Bush Prize for Innovation, and has received both the Spirit of Dakota Award and the Presidential Points of Light Award. In 2019, Garreau was a recipient of Americans for the Arts’ Arts Education Award, and also accepted the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development’s Tim Wapato Public Advocate of the Year Award. Committed to creating culturally relevant, sustainable and effective programming for Cheyenne River youth and community members of all ages, Garreau leads CRYP’s Waniyetu Wowapi Lakota Youth Arts & Culture Institute, incorporating a public art park and the annual RedCan invitational graffiti jam, and an innovative art internship program. In 2017, CRYP’s RedCan won the Robert E. Gard Award from Americans for the Arts, and in 2019, it was one of 50 projects honored through Americans for the Arts’ Public Art Network Year in Review program.

In 2018, South Dakota State Legislator Scyller Borglum earned her Ph.D. in geological engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines, culminating a career and academic trajectory that started with a minor in Scandinavian language and included a theology degree as well as a job in the North Dakota oil fields. While earning her Ph.D. at Mines, the Montana native served as a role model to young Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) students on campus, offering coffee talks on such topics as time management and study habits. Known for her communication skills and outgoing personality, Borglum also spoke to more than 700 middle school girls visiting campus for the Women in Science Conference, initiating interactions to encourage other young women to open their minds to careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

In 2016 when I first visited the offices of the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC, I was struck by the agency’s name in big three-dimensional block letters with a brushed-steel finish protruding from the back wall of the reception area. It may seem odd, but my first thought was of my childhood days of happily watching “Sesame Street” and hearing that daily announcement that included “… brought to you by the National Endowment for the Arts.”

Those were much simpler times for me, without a doubt, and perhaps for the country. But it’s reassuring to know at least one thing hasn’t changed in decades: “Art Works,” just as the National Endowment for the Arts logo asserts.

Art does work. It brings communities together. It educates. It allows people to express themselves in universal ways. It drives economic development. It entertains.

It inspires. It builds common ground. It enhances and preserves culture. It provides a framework for existential pondering. It soothes. It empowers. And that’s just scratching the surface.

As director of the South Dakota Arts Council, I’m proud of what we accomplish annually when it comes to serving South Dakotans and their communities through the arts. In our most recently completed fiscal year, our agency awarded 474 grants through a $1.36 million grants and special initiatives budget, reaching over one million people, including more than 326,000 youth and involving about 9,300 artists.

Other South Dakotans, local governments, businesses, foundations, institutions and schools must also believe in the arts because they kicked in an additional $19.48 million in local cash matching funds to support these arts opportunities.

Whether we’re helping support efforts to carry on traditional art forms from one generation to the next, to offer students exposure to art forms and teaching artists that might otherwise be inaccessible, to help develop the skills and careers of artists, to provide art as therapy for residents of institutions or to simply help brighten the sights and sounds of a community—it would be impossible without our partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

By statute, at least 40% of the Endowment’s annual budget goes to U.S. states and territories to support regional arts agencies and to be used for arts projects and programming determined at the local level. In South Dakota, several organizations receive even more support from the National Endowment for the Arts through direct grants.

As Michael Orlove, director of state, regional and local partnerships at the National Endowment for the Arts, and I logged more than 800 miles on the odometer this summer, traveling from one community to the next, it didn’t feel at all like a chore. It was a privilege to show him just a sampling of some of the incredible impact his federal agency has had on our state.

Art works, and with necessary public investment from the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Dakota Legislature, we can continue to make sure it works hard for South Dakotans.

Verschoor to retire from South Dakota Art Museum

The South Dakota arts community lost a great friend recently with the passing of Ray Hillenbrand, longtime owner of the Prairie Edge gallery and a dedicated advocate for the arts in our state. Prairie Edge won a Governor’s Award in 2013 for Outstanding Support by an Organization or Business.

Hillenbrand committed himself to making his community and state a better place. He will be missed throughout South Dakota.

fter 20 years as director of the South Dakota Art Museum, Lynn Verschoor will retire at the close of 2019.

Highlights of her two decades at the museum include artist collaborations, the Public Art Program, the creation of a museum studies minor at South Dakota State University, collaborations with the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies, expanding the South Dakota Art Museum collection, Brookings Kite Festival and the Harvey Dunn Paint Out. Verschoor has also been active in creating the Visual Thinking Strategies program and numerous outreach and education programs across the state and region.

With the near constant rotation of featured exhibits, programs, outreach and education, funding concerns and just the day to day business of running a museum, the life of a museum director can be stressful, but Verschoor is quick to credit her staff with making her job so joyful.

“Every morning when I walk in the building, I feel so lucky,” Verschoor said.

“I am surrounded by art every day. It’s so invigorating and makes me feel so good.

I have the best job in the state, and I get to work with such great people. I just love Lynn Verschoor shares the museum collection. the interaction with visitors—watching them engage is so rewarding. When school groups come in and the children’s eyes light up, it’s magical—the pure joy of discovery.”

While 20 years at the museum have created some very memorable moments, it’s not the extraordinary that Verschoor will miss most, but the casual, everyday exchanges.

“I’m going to miss the people—staff, students, museum guild members,” she said.

“Everyone is so kind, helpful and generous. I will miss SDSU staff as well, they have all be extremely helpful, patient and kind. Everyone has been amazing, and I couldn’t have done my job without their thoughtful support.”

The National Center for Arts Research at Southern Methodist University in Dallas has released its fifth annual Arts Vibrancy Index Report, which ranks more than 900 communities across the nation, examining the level of supply, demand and government support for the arts.

Based on the new research, Brookings is ranked the seventh most arts-vibrant small-sized community in America. The rankings are based on per capita data and the report highlights elements that make the ranked communities unique. The Brookings spotlight mentions South Dakota State University, South Dakota Art Museum, Children’s Museum of South Dakota, the Ritz Art Gallery and numerous murals created by local artists in downtown Brookings as part of the city’s Urban Canvas arts engagement initiative.

According to the report, the performing arts scene in Brookings is enriched by the Brookings Chamber Music Society, the Brookings Area Community Band, Woodbine Productions and the Swiftel Center, which hosts big name music concerts. Brookings is also home to the Prairie Repertory Theatre, the Brookings Community Theatre and the SDSU theater department, as well as the SDSU Performing Arts Center.

The Brookings Arts Council encourages community connections through the arts by supporting awareness, appreciation and participation. Brookings ranks third in federal arts dollars per capita and fifth in arts and culture employees.
