FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
Dear Friend, In this, our 28th year, we celebrated our resilience and our creativity. We came together with Grammy-Award winning musicians, celebrated theater, and dance companies, deep and innovative thinkers, and award-winning storytellers to reflect on what brings us together and makes us unique. We welcomed our most diverse audiences to date and collaborated with community leaders to grow our practice in disability justice. And while we had 150 talented staff and countless dedicated volunteers to bring visions to life in parks, theaters, museums, and storefronts, it takes so much more than that to make the Festival the once-in-a-lifetime experience that it is every year. It is thanks to a community of generous supporters, organizational partners, and champions in the government and business community to create this unique gift. As we look to the year ahead, we are emboldened by our vision of a flourishing city and state in which we are all celebrated as creatives and connected through our love of community.

ABOUT ARTS & IDEAS The International Festival of Arts & Ideas is a yearround organization that presents an annual celebration of performing arts, lectures, and conversations in New Haven, Connecticut. The Festival convenes leading artists, thought leaders, and innovators from around the world for dynamic public programs to engage, entertain, and inspire a diversity of communities. In 2023, more than 85% of Festival programming was free to the public, including events that featured some of the most influential music, dance, and theater artists and speakers of our time. We seek to attract and engage a broad and diverse audience, celebrating and building community and advancing economic development.
As a longtime Connecticut resident, I find that New Haven Arts & Ideas is hands down the best arts event that goes on in Connecticut every year. — Dan Iacovella, Galvan Foundation
Thank you for a remarkable series of events. Just incredible. — Justin Elicker, Mayor of New Haven

2023 FESTIVAL: RISE

10 YEARS OF NEIGHBORHOOD FESTIVALS This year marked the 10-year anniversary of Neighborhood Festivals. These one-day events across New Haven brought together residents, artists, and businesses to celebrate the vibrancy of our communities. Festivals took place in Dixwell, Fair Haven, The Hill, Newhallville, and West Hills/West Rock, with live music and DJ sets, line dance instruction and puppet shows.
Hanan Hameen and the Official Juneteenth Coalition of Greater New Haven curated a special series of Juneteenth events including performances from the Legendary COLD CRUSH Brothers, Stefon Hawkins with the New Hope Fellowship choir, and a community all-sing led by Jarron Taylor. To close out the New Haven Caribbean Heritage Festival, we presented a night of Soca music from Trinidad’s own Mical Teja. Cool Breeze curated an evening of soul, jazz, and R&B with Ricky Alan Draughn, Michelle Brooks-Thompson, Jonathan DuBose, and Full Force and friends.
Extraordinary nights with powerful and glorious music. So much energy and positive vibes. We are so lucky to have the Festival each year to enhance our lives. Thank you! — Audience Survey Respondent FAIR HAVEN DAY | PHOTO: JOE BAEZ
KEYBANK CONCERT SERIES We presented 12 nights of programming on the New Haven Green, including 9 nights of live music on the Alexander Clark Stage as part of our KeyBank Concert Series. With a line up as diverse as our city, these shows brought people together on the New Haven Green to dance, sing, and celebrate. Performers included international singer Angeliqué Kidjo with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Grammy Award-winner Jon Secada, and hometown hero STOUT. In a Festival first, Arts & Ideas produced A Divine Homecoming & O’Sound, an inventive performance that honored HBCU history and legacy through storytelling and step. To close the Festival, the Intergalactic DRAGanza took us on a futuristic space adventure, featuring American Idol top ten performer and Latina drag star, Ada Vox.

You can count on IFAI to give festivalgoers access to fascinating people and performers that help us think about issues that impact everyone...IFAI’s commitment to make much of the [Ideas] series free and make event recordings available long after the series is over speaks to the organization’s mission to serve and connect communities. — Lucy Nalpathanchil, VP of Community Engagement at CT Public

IN THEATERS ACROSS NEW HAVEN Co-presented with Long Wharf Theatre, celebrated artist Kristina Wong shared her unique journey from performance artist to public official in Kristina Wong for Public Office. The National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) of Jamaica delighted audiences with their blend of Jamaican, African, and American dance traditions in a co-presentation with the Shubert Theatre. And piano phenom Matthew Whitaker dazzled audiences with his blend of jazz and gospel. Montreal’s La Fille du Laitier charmed audiences with their powerful, wordless presentation of Macbeth Muet, while Marika Kuzma, Ukranian choral leader and producer, led a stunning ensemble in an emotional journey through the artistry and beauty of her homeland.

FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES Family programs sparked the imaginations of our youngest audience members through interactive music, theater, and circus performances. Innovative dance teacher Masem Enyong of Afro Beat Fun taught families about the impact of African dance on popular culture through a fun routine. Spellbound Theatre took us to dreamland with WINK, their imaginative performance that explored dreaming through puppetry, physical theater, and animation. And ARTFARM introduced kids to circus arts like juggling, balancing, and partner acrobatics in an outdoor workshop. MATTHEW WHITAKER | PHOTO: JOEL CALLAWAY

GORDON GEBALLE ENVIRONMENTAL SERIES New Haven Clean Cities Coalition Workshop gave audiences concrete ways to be a part of creating New Haven’s clean transportation system of tomorrow. Climate change experts Bruni Pizarro and James O’Donnell discussed climate justice as it relates to Connecticut’s waterways with moderator John Dankosky. The Talk to Me About Water Workshop discussed the global water crisis through meaningful and playful music, games, and conversations with artists and climate experts. And artist Amelia WingerBearskin gave a keynote presentation on her art and science storytelling work, demonstrating how new technologies can help preserve and engage with ancestral knowledge.

Arts & Ideas launched a new series inspired by board chair emeritus Gordon Geballe’s longtime commitment to environmentalism. Programs explored the natural world and climate change through music, dance, theater, workshops, and more. Adventurous string quartet Brooklyn Rider brought to life the four elements of earth, air, water and fire with four works by contemporary composers, serving as musical metaphor for the inter-related effects of climate change on our planet. In conjunction, curator Alva Greenberg assembled the Four Elements Exhibition, with eco-inspired works by artists Judy Cotton, Anindita Dutta, Jesse Good, and Gabriel Warren. Australian company Polyglot Theatre transformed the New Haven Green into a buzzing hive with their family-friendly show Bees. And Chef Hari Pulapaka taught us how to create an eco-conscious meal combining fresh Moroccan herbs and spices for his Sinfully Vegetarian B’steeya.

NEA BIG READ The Festival was honored to be a recipient of the National Endowment for Arts’ Big Read grant in 2023. We partnered with the New Haven Free Public Library and community organizations like United Cerebral Palsy of Eastern CT, New England Assistive Technology Center at Oak Hill, and Kulturally LIT, as well as the One City One Read Advisory Committee to celebrate Rebekah Taussig’s Sitting Pretty: The View from my Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body. We explored themes of disability justice through book discussions, performances, and events with our community partners, and distributed over 600 free copies of Sitting Pretty across New Haven. INSIDER EVENT | PHOTO: INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS & IDEAS
Highlights of our programming included the immersive dance piece D.I.S.P.L.A.Y.E.D. from Heidi Latsky Dance, an original musical response to Sitting Pretty from artist JJJJJerome Ellis, and Together We Rise: Resources and Disability Justice Fair–bringing together organizations to empower attendees with information on disability services and activism happening right here in our city.
The Big Read was a groundbreaking event. Never before in the story of the world has a mainstream established organization acknowledged and featured ableism. This will be recorded as a turning point. It was a great honor and profound thrill to be a part of it. — Elaine Kolb, Artist & Activist

SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION
2023 FELLOWS GRADUATION | PHOTO: JOEL CALLAWAY
Embedded in our promise to connect, inspire, and entertain is a commitment to engaging the Festival as a place of learning and growth. For nearly a decade, we have worked annually with a cohort of high school students in New Haven and the surrounding area in a semester-long exploration of arts and cultural management by embedding students’ learning into the Festival experience. Through a longstanding partnership with Gateway Community College, students have also received college credit at no cost to them with the rigor of a university-level learning experience.
The Festival gave me the initial exposure, skills, and confidence in production to launch into the field. — Patrick McMillan, WWE
Arts & Ideas hires more than one hundred positions annually in operations, production, company management, and box office. Several young people have grown their skills through work with the Festival, going on to work internationally in the arts. Patrick McMillan is one such extraordinary staff person. Starting as a member of the operations crew after graduating from Hamden High, PATRICK MCMILLAN Patrick joined the production team as a lighting operator and assistant designer. He found his skills to be in demand as he began to work on Connecticut-based WWE productions. He now travels the world operating lighting for events in Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. McMillan comes back to Arts & Ideas every year as a commitment to the Festival where he began the journey.
This year, students engaged with the topic of Disability Justice through the NEA Big Read book, Sitting Pretty, attended multiple Festival events with their instructors, and completed their own final projects. Students also produced a public IDEAS talk on the topic of Artificial Intelligence and its intersection with the creative sector. To date, more than 150 High School Fellows have participated in the program. Many Fellows have gone on to work in creative industries, and a number of them have worked with the Festival following their Fellowship experience.
