Yeng Pway Ngan is one of Singapore's pioneer writers with an unmatched breadth of vision.

Born in 1947, the graduate from the former N gee Ann College began his career as a professional writer in the 1980s.

Over the past 30 years, Yeng has built up an impressive body of works in various genres including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama and literary essays. He came to prominence with his debut anthology "On the Operating Couch" (1968), which was praised for its profound insights into the beauty and purity of a richly imaginative life. As a regular columnist in Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao and subsequently Tong Bao in Malaysia, Wen Wei Bao and Sing Tao Evening Post in Hong Kong, his essays enjoyed a wide following in Singapore and overseas.

Celebrated for his sharp, perceptive and satirical writing style, his columns and social commentaries show a genuine concern for the quality of life and the intellectual cultivation of his fellow men. Yeng's plays "T he Undeliverable Mail" and "Man and Bronze Statue" have been staged to critical praise for their poignancy and humour.

Yeng is best known for his novels which feature the theme of an individual's struggle and search for identity in the modern city, focusing on the

frustrations of the idealistic Chinese-educated against the backdrop of commercialised Singapore. His first novel, ''A Man Like Me" (1987) received the 1988 Book Award from the National Book Development Council and was subsequently translated into English in 1993.

"Lonesome Face" (1989) is a groundbreaking work with its multi-perspective narrative approach.

Yeng represented Singapore as an international guest writer at the 2000 Taipei International Writers Residency Programme organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taipei. In 2002, Yeng's latest work "Tumult" was printed by Elite Publishing Company, an established and major publisher in Taipei. T he work is currently being serialised in Chinese newspapers in Indonesia and T hailand.
