Lim Tze Peng graduated from Chung Cheng High School in 1948. The self-taught artist has, in his SO-year career, produced thousands of paintings in a variety of media, such as oils and Chinese ink. Today, he is at the prime of his artistic development. A doyen of the Chinese calligraphy community, Lim evolved a unique individual style which captures traditional forms with a contemporary liberalism. Inspired by the spirit of the French Impressionists, he learnt to work on the spot using the traditional techniques of Chinese brush and inks. From 1979 to 1983, he embarked on a personal mission to capture for posterity historical landmarks such as Chinatown, the Singapore River and Clarke Quay. The mission resulted in 250 pieces of paintings, many of which now adorn the walls of government buildings. From 1974 to 1997, Lim made regular expeditions to Bali where he captured the spirit of Bali through its landmarks, festivals, dancers, temples, market places, fishing village and traditional craftsmen. His signature style also captured scenes as diverse as· the Suzhou River and sights from Thailand, London and Paris.

Solo exhibitions by Lim include "Lim Tze Peng: By Himself " (1993), "Moments" (1994) and "Fascinating Landscapes: The Art of Lim Tze Peng" (1998). Lim has also exhibited in group shows in Paris, Tokyo, Taiwan, Hong Kong and London. In 1977, Lim was honoured with a Special Prize at the Commonwealth Art Exhibition in England. Lim has served on the art selection committees of the Singapore Art Society, Senior Citizen Calligraphy & Painting Society and Shicheng Calligraphy & Carving Society. Lim is adviser to the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore and continues to mentor several young artists. He has donated 34 of his major works to the Singapore Art Museum.
