Sonoma Coast Spend the Day in the Historic Town of Bodega
Just four miles from Bodega Bay, Historic Bodega is a destination you should add to your itinerary. Originally known as Bodega Corners, like Bodega Bay the town is named for its discoverer Juan Francisco Bodega y Caudra, who first sailed into the harbor in 1775. Two Miwok Villages originally inhabited the area, one on the site of the current town, the other just north of Bodega. In 1859, shipbuilders constructed Saint Teresa of Avila Church. Open from 1856 to 1967, Watson School, once served as Bodega’s school, and is located in a Sonoma County Regional Parks Department historic park about 2 miles (3 km) east of Bodega. In 1963, much of Bodega was used for exterior filming in Alfred Hitchcock’s film, The Birds, where it was presented as the nearby shore village of Bodega Bay. Bodega’s Potter School, now a private residence, was used as the Bodega Bay School in the movie; and Bodega’s general store also appeared “as itself”, though it has since been moved from its original site.

Sonoma Coast Hike the Sonoma Coast Beaches and Trails
Sonoma Coast hiking options are diverse and plentiful, from sand dunes to peaks with trails offering vistas as far away as the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. Sonoma Coast State Park There are three areas of the park that offer hiking opportunities. Most of the hikes along the headlands are not that strenuous as you are walking across fairly flat ground that is essentially an open prairie. South Sonoma Coast Bodega Head has a relatively short hiking trail that goes around the headlands. This trail has spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, Bodega Harbor, and the town of Bodega Bay. There is another trail that connects with the trail system found in the Bodega Dunes section of the park. Here you can walk along the headlands and on the beach. (On clear nights, Bodega Head is an excellent place for star gazing!) Sonoma Coast Trail is a pretty bluff-top route that connects to some wonderful secret beaches. During spring, wildflowers brighten the bluff: blue lupine, Indian Paintbrush and sea sage. Sonoma Coast Trail begins on the bluffs above Blind Beach, but the walker can also begin at Goat Rock, located a half mile north of the trailhead. The rock is connected to the mainland by a causeway. During the 1920s, Goat Rock was quarried, and used to build a jetty at the mouth of the Russian River. A mile north of the trailhead, and 0.5 miles north of Goat Rock, you will find the mouth of the Russian River. The 110 mile-long river is one of the largest on the North Coast. At the river mouth, you can observe ospreys nesting in the treetops. The California brown pelican is one of several species of birds that breed and nest on Penny Island, located in the river mouth. Directions to trailhead: From Highway 1, ten miles north of the town of Bodega Bay, turn west on Goat Rock Road. Signed Sonoma Coast Trail begins at a small parking lot on the left of the road. If you’d like to begin this walk at Goat Rock, continue to road’s end at a large parking area. Sonoma Coast Trail heads south along the edge of the bluffs. Soon, you’ll step over a stile and head across a pasture. The trail climbs to a saddle on the shoulder of Peaked Hill (elevation 376 feet). You then descend to the bluff tops and cross a bridge over a fern-lined ravine. It’s a pastoral scene with grassy bluffs and a weathered old barn in the distance. After crossing another ravine, the path reaches the Shell Beach parking area. A short trail descends the bluffs to Shell Beach. Another trail extends northwest, crosses the highway, and reaches redwood-shaded Pomo Canyon. Picnic tables and walk32

in (environmental) campsites are located near the creek. Sonoma Coast Trail continues south, detouring inland around a private home, then doubling back seaward. The trail plunges into Furlong Gulch, then switchbacks back up to the bluffs. You can follow the trail or the beach to Wright’s Beach Campground. Further north in Sonoma Coast State Park are two other trails. The Kortum Trail extends from Blind Beach to Wright’s Beach. Access (parking) is midway along the trail at Shell Beach at Wright’s Beach. The trail travels along headlands and down to a few beaches. You can also travel inland from Shell Beach by taking the Pomo Canyon Trail. It begins at Route 1, just across the pull-off entrance to Shell Beach and ends at Pomo Canyon Environmental Camp. Another trail of note is at the northern edge of the park. Vista Point is a short loop trail that goes to breathtaking Vista Point. There is a parking lot and picnic tables at the trailhead. Sonoma Coast Beaches: Miles of sandy beaches, rugged headlands with spectacular vistas, and a rocky coast with secret coves and arches carved by the sea and wind make this area popular for Sonoma hiking. Sonoma Coast State Beach is not one beach, but many. You could easily overlook them, because most aren’t visible from Highway 1. The beaches are tucked away in rocky coves and hidden by tall bluffs. Colorfully named locales are some of the highlights of Sonoma Coast State Beach, thirteen miles of coastline stretching from the Russian River to Bodega Bay. The summer morning fog will usually burn off by noon. Be aware of the danger of “sneaker waves,” frequent along this coast, that can sweep hikers off rocks. Surfing the Sonoma Coast can be one of the most sublime experiences of your life. But finding the right place to surf can be a challenge, as they are scattered northward from Bodega Bay to the Mendocino County border. Take a deep breath and... relax. Sonoma Coast State Park spans 17 miles from Bodega Head to Vista Trail (approximately 4 miles north of Jenner.) You can access the beach from more than a dozen points along coast Highway 1. From Bodega Bay heading south: South Salmon Creek Beach Two miles of scenic, sandy beach. Great for surf fishing, beach combing and picnicking. Trails lead across the dunes and adjacent to shore. North Salmon Creek Beach Only 1/4 mile long; parking lot fills quickly. Recommended for experienced surfers. Schoolhouse Beach Great viewpoint with a trail leading down to the beach. No facilities here. Portuguese Beach Close to 1/3 of a mile long, the parking lot on the bluff overlooks the beach with a good trail leading down to the beach. Shell Beach Unique rock layers and structures of this beach bring geologists and school children to this beach. About 2/3 of a mile long. Goat Rock Beach A popular destination due to its great scenery and iconic Goat Rock, visitors will share the beach with a colony of harbor seals (please keep 50+ feet from seals). 9 Sonoma Coast Relax in the Redwoods at Armstrong National Reserve
Visit the Giant Redwoods of Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. The ancient coast redwood is the tallest living thing on the planet! These remarkable trees live to be 500-1000 years old and can grow to a diameter of 12 to 16 feet. A few trees survive over 2,000 years and reach 350 feet in height. As you enter the park, you will feel your own pulse drop, and a strange calm will overtake you as you breathe in the fragrant aroma and stroll through the fog-shrouded trails. This “Nature’s Cathedral” is as close to magic as we mortals can imagine. Sequoia sempervirens, also known as towering coastal redwoods, cover the hillsides of this 805-acre Reserve. With miles of nature trails, visitors can enjoy the forest by foot or horseback. The reserve has a large outdoor amphitheater and numerous picnic facilities (which are available for weddings!). There are no campgrounds in the Reserve, but there are camping facilities at the adjacent Austin Creek State Recreation Area. Don’t miss Parson Jones Tree, the park’s tallest at 310 feet; The Oldest Tree, Colonel Armstrong Tree, estimated at over 1,400 years old; and the Icicle Tree, which displays unusual burl formations. The Discover Trail offers a wheelchair accessible pathway, interpretive panels in Braille and tree hugging platforms. Check in with Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods for docent led hikes. In addition to the easy, level stroll through the park, numerous hikes are available, originating from within or just outside the park. These hikes range from 1-mile easy hikes to a moderate to strenuous 3.3-mile hike. Advanced level hikes begin in the Armstrong Redwoods and wind their way into the rolling hills, forests, and grasslands of Austin Creek Recreation Area. These hikes range from 5.6 miles with an 1100’ climb to 9 miles with a 1500’ climb. Guided Armstrong Nature Trail group hikes are available by appointment and are typically offered for larger groups.

Historic Johnson’s Beach has been an historic and favorite destination for Russian River visitors for over a century. Accessible from downtown Guerneville, this storied beach in the midst of towering redwood groves, offers tent glamping in canvas cabanas, bungalows and tiny cabins, as well as day use of the beach.
The beach opens on Memorial Day and closes October 1. Come and enjoy canoes, kayaks, beach chairs, inner tubes and umbrella rentals. Their snack bar offers burgers, hot dogs and ice cream as well as local beers and wines. Enjoy live music all day! Started by Gertie and Ernie Johnson in 1918, Johnson’s Beach is a storied summertime sojourn in the heart of Sonoma County—built as a monument to the majestic history of its surroundings.

Sonoma Coast Monte Rio Beach
Spend the day on the largest public beach on the lower Russina River. This ADA accessible beach is known by the locals as Big Rocky Beach. Here you can rent a canoe, paddle board or kayak. This beach has slow flow areas for beginners, but also offers some more challenging flows a bit further down river. Many kayakers choose this spot to put in
for a beautiful trip to the Jenner estuary where the river meets the sea. Their food concession stand offers cold drinks, ice cream and lunch items. Volleyball courts and horseshoe pits are free to use. The Wheeleez Sandcruiser all terrain beach wheelchair can take you from the parking lot to floating in shallow water. Please call 707 865 2487 to make a reservation. West of the Monte Rio Bridge is Sandy Beach. This small beach is popular for fly-fishing and the adjacent boat launch provides access for small fishing vessels. Angling has long been a popular sport on the Russian River and even today the area is famous for Steelhead trout. Sandy Beach is our dog-friendly beach and leashes are required. We ask that you respect the use of the area and clean up after your pet. Good river hygiene recommends that you bring fresh water for your pet to drink rather than river water, and bathe him/her upon arriving home. Dutch Bill Beach is located across the river from Sandy Beach with access off of Main Street. It is a natural island in high water with Dutch Bill Creek to the south and the Russian River to the North. In the summer months it is a popular family beach for picnicking and fishing. There is a Park and Ride lot half a block south of the Beach entrance on Main Street. This beach is open to the public Memorial Day weekend through the last weekend in September. Petaluma Rooster Run Golf Course
The Rooster Run Golf Course started as pancake flat pastureland. Meandering through the property were three creeks. Along their beds grew native willows, cottonwoods and oak trees. These creeks and two ancient trees were incorporated in the design of the golf course, a total of 370,000 cubic feet of soil was moved to shape the course. As a result, the course features undulating hills, six lakes and the area's only island green. There are thirty-nine fairway and green-side bunkers, adding to the challenging play of the course. The Rooster Run Cafe is located in the main pro-shop building and offers a variety of options to take with you while making the turn as well as a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a post round beverage.

Petaluma Museum
The former library now houses Petaluma poultry, dairy, and Miwok Indian history exhibits from the 1850s. The cornerstone for this stately Carnegie Library was laid in 1904. The
building, designed by local architect Brainerd Jones and built from locally quarried stone, features the largest free-standing leaded glass dome in Northern California. The building is in the neoclassical style, featuring original fan-glass windows, round leaded-glass windows, original interior wood paneling and columns. It also houses a fine research library. Exhibits change periodically, and the upstairs exhibits are always free. They also offer FREE walking tours of historic Petaluma, led by costumed docents. Come hear the history of Petaluma from the mouths of early settlers of Petaluma. Most Saturdays, May through October, meet on the steps of the Museum at 10:30 a.m. to begin. The museum will customize tours for groups traveling together, local groups or associations and schools. Open Thurs-Sun 10am-4pm.

Green Music Center
The centerpiece of the Green Music Center, Sonoma State University’s ambitious and sprawling fine arts project, is the 1400-seat Joan and Sanford I. Weill Hall. The Hall features three floors of handcrafted, European steamed beech maple seats, each seat crafted to gain optimum acoustics. There is literally not a bad seat in the
house. The modular rear wall of Weill Hall opens fully, extending the concert experience to an outdoor audience of up to 3,000. The beautifully landscaped outside area includes a “jumbotron” video for those who would prefer complementing their experience with a picnic.

Sugarloaf State Park
Spend the day or the week at Sugarloaf State Park, and enjoy the plentiful hiking trails, by foot, by mountain bike or horseback. Surrounded by ancient redwoods and lush ferns, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park contains the headwaters of Sonoma Creek. It runs through gorge and canyon, across the meadow floor, beneath scenic rock outcroppings. With 47 family-sized campsites and 25 miles of hiking trails, it is the perfect place to spend time outdoors! Sugarloaf Park is where the Japanese practice of
Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing, was introduced to the West. The program now has expanded all over the world. The Association of Forest Therapy supports the park by leading a monthly forest-bathing walk here at the park, generally the 4th Sunday of the month. You will want to stop at the Visitor Center, where you will find useful information about the park, including history of the park and the area, maps and guides. Be sure and pick up some unique gifts in their gift shop. The Visitor Center is open 9am-5pm every day. They stay open until 7pm on Fridays in the summer. Day use passes are available 6am-8pm daily.

Just off Highway 12, in Glen Ellen, lies a woodland experience where East meets West. The 25acre Asian garden features wild collected trees & shrubs, and includes magnolias, dogwoods, maples, birch, roses, lilies, rhododendrons and more, each with a unique identifier (accession number), species name, and source information. This information and the specimens themselves are used by the broader botanic garden community to advance conservation and horticultural efforts. Explore the Museum of Sonoma County
Located in Downtown Santa Rosa, the Museum of Sonoma County welcomes visitors to experience regional history and contemporary art. The 7th Street campus includes two buildings, multiple galleries, and a sculpture garden. The Museum opened its doors in 1985 as
the Sonoma County Museum, housed in the historic 1910 post office, a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. With multiple changing exhibitions per year, there is always something new to experience at the Museum! The Art Museum of Sonoma County presents national and international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The Museum’s collection features artists who have lived and worked in Northern California. With diverse education programs, the Museum serves as a creative forum and public gathering place. Current and upcoming exhibitions include Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through November 3; CRUISIN’Cruisin’-Sonoma County Lowriders and the Art of Justin Favela through Nov. 24; Take Me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific November 15 - March 22, 2026. Sonoma County Stories is a permanent Sonoma County history exhibition engaging with the past in a brand-new way: through the power of storytelling. The museum’s garden was designed by landscape architect Frederic Warnecke. The garden’s elements were chosen to evoke the landscape of Sonoma County: its rolling hills, grass, and trees. Plants, such as the olive and ornamental plum trees, reference the region’s agricultural heritage. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm.

Luther Burbank Home & Gardens
Over the course of his 50-year career, famous horticulturist Luther Burbank experimented with and developed numerous plant varieties. At Luther Burbank Home & Gardens, you will learn about this amazing man’s life by visiting the Museum, his Greenhouse and the home he lived in from 1884 through 1906. The museum is located in the Carriage House. See exhibits on Burbank’s life and influential work, visit the Gift Shop,
and sign up for a Docent-led tour. The Greenhouse, designed by Burbank himself in 1889, is still used by the Gardeners for seed propagation. The Museum, Gift Shop and guided tours of the Burbank Home and Greenhouse are available to the public Tuesday through Sunday from April-October. Wander through the gardens and admire the beauty Burbank studied and to which he dedicated his life. The Carriage House Museum exhibits feature a variety of subjects, all with an underlying theme: Yesterday and Today at Luther Burbank Home & Gardens, where important things have been happening for more than a century! Charles M. Schulz Museum
Enjoy a day of nostalgia and fun for all ages while exploring the world of cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, creator of Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the Peanuts gang. In the late 1950s, Schulz and his family moved to Sono-
ma County, and Schulz spent his days where the Charles M. Schulz Museum is located today. The Museum features the largest collection of original Peanuts comic strips in the world, with variety of changing exhibitions to explore within its two-story building. Also, see a re-creation of Schulz’s art studio, enjoy screenings of Peanuts animated specials in the 100-seat theater, draw your own comics in the Education Room, and enjoy photo ops and surprises around every corner. Be sure to snap a photo with the enormous Peanuts tile wall, composed of 3,588 comic strips, and look out for the Kite-Eating Tree in the courtyard! The small but well-stocked Museum Store features items only sold at the Museum. Visit the Snoopy Pressed Penny Machine in the lobby to make your own special souvenir! Howarth Park
This 25-acre lake is perfect for fishing and boating. A softball field and six lighted tennis courts are also available. For hiking, biking or jogging, there are miles of winding trails that connect with the scenic Bay Area Ridge Trail. Ride a miniature train, take a spin on the carousel in the amusement area, or ride a pony in the animal farm. The simulated 1863 C.P. Huntington steam train takes guests on a quarter-mile train ride through the haunted tunnel, down to the pond where “Alfred the Alligator” lives, across the 100-year-old bridge and into the enchanted forest where Manny the Monkey likes to hang out! Children 12 months or younger may ride for free but must be accompanied by someone at least 16 years of age. Their whimsical carousel houses 30 horses, 2 chariots and over one thousand lights! Trails at Howarth Park link to Spring Lake Regional Park and Annadel State Park trail network. Howarth Park is open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily, on Summerfield Road in eastern Santa Rosa.

Pacific Coast Air Museum
Founded in 1989 Pacific Coast Air Museum is a unique collection of authentic, wellcared-for aircraft, and a non-profit organization with a dedicated base of aviation experts photo by Thomas Belka who are giving back to the Sonoma County Community. The Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the acquisition, restoration, safe operation and display of historic aircraft. Visit the museum to view the educational exhibits and walk among the static aircraft displays including the F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat, F-86 Sabre, AV-8C Harrier and UH-1H Huey. Sit inside the cockpit of historic military aircraft the third weekend of each month and talk to knowledgeable docents and aircraft crews, many of whom served our country in these same aircraft.

Spring Lake Regional Park
Amid the foothills of eastern Santa Rosa, the 320acre Spring Lake Regional Park features a three-acre swimming lagoon and 72-acre Spring Lake. Here excellent fishing and boating opportunities abound. Those without a boat can rent a canoe or paddle boat. There are also miles of trails for horseback riding, walking, hiking and biking throughout the park— all with beautiful
views. Equestrian trails connect with trails in nearby Annadel State Park. The Spring Lake Water Park runs from memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The water park on the Spring Lake Regional Park swimming lagoon is an inflatable, floating playground featuring slides, climbing walls, bridges, balance beams, jumps, an in-water sports court and more.
The swimming lagoon has lifeguards, a sandy beach, a snack bar, showers and picnic areas. Plenty of campgrounds around the park allow a peaceful night’s sleep. At the educational Visitor’s Center, you’ll find lots of information on the animals and plant life that inhabit the park, as well as maps for a variety of trails. Spring Lake is next to Howarth Park in eastern Santa Rosa. Spend a day there tomorrow.

Laguna Wetlands Preserve in Laguna de Santa Rosa is the largest freshwater marsh in Northern California. The oak woodland and vernal pool complex surrounding the wetlands of the Laguna ecosystem once provided food to antelope, elk and deer herds. A short walking trail adjoins the Laguna channel and loops around the City’s former wastewater ponds. From late Spring to early Fall, a floating pedestrian bridge is in place to connect to a trail on the east bank of the Laguna channel. The trail runs on the east side of the Laguna channel between Highway 12 and Occidental Road, with trailheads and parking areas located off both roads.

Ride the West County and Joe Rodota Trail
The West County Trail between the towns of Sebastopol and Forestville is a paved path and is relatively flat with a few gentle climbs. An unpaved horseback riding trail runs parallel to the trail. The Joe Rodota Trail, a segment of the West County Trail, is paved and runs between Santa Rosa and Sebastopol. Built on a former railroad right-of-way, several bridges have been constructed over the old trestles. The trail is especially popular in the spring with the vivid blooming of the wildflowers. It is also an excellent place for bird watching. The West County Trail and the Joe Rodota Trail offer beautiful farm and agricultural views. Both trails can be picked up from just outside Gravenstein Station and the Barlow Center, and there is ample free parking. In Santa Rosa, the trail begins at the pedestrian/bicycle bridge intersection with the Prince Memorial Greenway between West 3rd Street and Railroad Street. In Sebastopol, the trail begins near the intersection of Mill Station Road and Highway 116. Additional trail access is located off public streets along the trail. Don’t have your bike with you? Stop into Sebastopol Bike Center, located in the Gravenstein Station center and rent a bike for an hour, for a day or for a weekend. Or rent an e-bike at Revel Cycles in the Barlow. Each shop is located right at the starting point for either Joe Rodota Trail or West County Trail. Both the Joe Rodota Trail and the West County Regional Trail, which runs between Sebastopol and Forestville, are built along land that was once the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railway. The rail line linked Petaluma and Santa Rosa with Sebastopol and Forestville. Together, the trails total 14 miles and feature 8.5 miles of paved gently sloped trail. Accessible parking is provided at the west end of Sebastopol Road.

Foothill Regional Park
Foothill Regional Park is located in east Windsor, in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. A former ranch, the 211 acres feature beautiful oak woodlands on rolling hillsides, scenic overlooks of central Sonoma County, three ponds for bass and bluegill fishing, grassy meadows, and spring wildflowers. Nearly 7 miles of trails cover varied terrain, offering easy to strenuous hiking options. Some trails are open to hikers only while others are available to equestrians and cyclists as well. Trails range from uneven single-track to wide ranch roads. One gravel trail is moderately accessible for visitors in wheelchairs. Sonoma County Regional Parks recently completed construction on new gathering areas, trails and parking lot improvements inside the main park entrance and in the Arata Lane parking lot at Foothill Regional Park. Renovations and improvements focus on “climate adaptive design” to make the park more resilient to future wildfires and offer greater protection to surrounding neighborhoods. Please avoid recently planted areas to allow the vegetation time to regrow.

Hand Fan Museum
The Hand Fan Museum is the first museum in the United States dedicated solely to hand fans, and displays a permanent collection, as well as a rotating exhibit, that tell, often in beguiling detail, the stories of the cultures and individuals who used them. The band released their album “Whole Earth Rhythm,” showcasing Wilson’s songwriting talent on six of the seven tracks and his virtuosity with the bamboo flute. Spend the Day on Lake Sonoma Located at the upper end of Dry Creek Valley, Lake Sonoma offers a nice family area for picnicking, swimming, bank fishing, and picnics. Yorty Creek is located far up the Dry Creek arm and can be accessed by car from the city of Cloverdale. Facilities include chemical toilets, free sheltered picnic areas, a car-top boat launch (no trailers allowed), and a swim beach. Note: no drinking water is available at Yorty Creek. Yorty Creek is managed as a day use area. Boat-in campers wishing to launch and park overnight at Yorty Creek must check in with the visitor center and obtain a parking permit to avoid receiving a citation. Kids can find hours of entertainment and learning at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, an indoor/outdoor, hands-on children’s museum located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito. It is a beautiful 15-minute ferry ride from downtown Tiburon. The Angel Island Ferry also offers Bay Cruises, including romantic Sunset Cruises, Wildlife Tours, and special events. Marin Theatre Company had modest grassroots beginnings. In 1966, 35 Mill Valley residents came together under the leadership of Sali Lieberman to create the Mill Valley Center for the Performing Arts [MVCPA]. The nonprofit organization brought arts as diverse as film, theater, poetry, dance and concerts of classical, jazz and folk music to Marin County for a decade. After a number of successful community theater productions, MVCPA began to exclusively produce and present theater performances in 1977. Now rechristened Marin Theatre, the company is the leading professional theater in the North Bay and premier midsized theater in the Bay Area. In the fall of 2023, Lance Gardner was appointed artistic director. Tour Muir Woods National Monument
Have you ever been anywhere that was magical? When you enter Muir Woods, that will probably be your initial impression. It is quite simply, magical! The majestic coastal Redwoods, which have held reign over this woodland kingdom for 600-800 years, stand as tall as 258 feet. The oldest of these trees is over 1,200 years old. The coastal redwood forests and fern-coated canyons of the Muir Woods National Monument attract nearly one million people each year. This fascinating area was made a national monument in 1908 by Teddy Roosevelt. As early as 1892, the area was used by the local “Bohemian Club” as a summer encampment. Bohemian Grove still stands in memory of this group. Later, threatened by actions that would have destroyed much of the area, local philanthropists William and Elizabeth Thacher Kent donated much of the area to the government, saving the natural beauty and allowing it to become a National Monument. Preferring not to have the area named for them, the Kents opted to have it named for naturalist John Muir. The abundant plant and animal life add to the exquisite scenery. Along the many miles of gentle and winding hiking trails, visitors can see tanoak trees, redwood sorrel, stellar jays, black-tailed deer and banana slugs. Fortunate fall visitors may see a carpet of ladybugs in select areas as the insects come to mate. Some of the trails are paved, making it easier for wheelchairs, strollers and young children. Muir Beach and Overlook is about three miles away. This beach is a semi-circular cove with pristine views of the California coast. Ten miles down the road is Stinson Beach, a splendid sandy beach at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais. Avid hikers can access a number of longer, more challenging hikes from within Muir Woods. Muir Woods National Monument is north of the Golden Gate Bridge on Highway 101. Take the Highway 1 exit and follow the signs. But the best way to get there is to take the Muir Woods Shuttle (Golden Gate Transit Route 66), which departs from the Marin City Transit Hub and Manzanita Park-and-Ride every half hour each Saturday, Sunday and holiday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Parking is limited at Muir Woods, and you should expect a long walk to the entrance, especially on weekends. Don’t forget the camera. To avoid difficult parking and maximize your visit, go to

The excitement of riding a mountain bike began in Marin County many years ago. The Bay View Shoreline Trails in China Camp State Park (415-456-0766) provide a fairly easy 10.3-mile ride past oak-bay woodlands and provide views of scenic San Pablo Bay. The Ridge Trail to Mt. Barnabe in the Samuel P. Taylor State Park (415-4889897) is 7.4 miles of steep riding. It will provide you with excellent vistas of Tomales Bay, Point Reyes and forested valleys of West Marin. The Pine Mountain Loop is a hard ride along 13.4 miles of fire roads gliding past redwood and fir trees and lakeside canyons. For an extremely challenging ride, head to the Eldridge Grade to East Peak Loop for 17.7 miles of strenuous riding, and an elevation change of 2,800 feet. You will pass panoramic views of the bay, mountain lakes and meadows, and then finally reach the top of Mt. Tamalpais. Discover the Magic of Mount Tamalpais
Just north of the Golden Gate Bridge is Mount Tamalpais, Marin County’s iconic landmark. From this beautiful mountain peak the vista goes for miles over the rolling hills of Marin. It is possible to see the Farallon Islands 25 miles away or catch a glimpse of the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, more than 125 miles away. There are plenty of fun activities to do on and around the mountain. Numerous hiking and biking trails crisscross the area. The eastern summit features a
visitor’s center, picnic tables and a concession stand, the perfect place to go for a relaxing picnic after a busy day of exploring this beautiful mountain. The park is home to the abandoned “crookedest railroad in the world” as well as the large stone amphitheater that plays host to the “Mountain Play” each year. First-come/first-serve camping is available at Pantoll or Bootjack Campgrounds. Visitors can also reserve a group campsite at Alice Eastwood Group Camp or a rustic cabin or seaside campsite at the Steep Ravine Cabins and Environmental Campground through the agency Reserve California. Hike Steep Ravine Trail: A perfect way to experience the natural beauty that is Marin County is to hike Steep Ravine in the Pantoll area. Majestic redwoods and lush fern-covered hillsides await you on this magical hike. You can park in the Pantoll Ranger Station parking lot (day fee required), and you will see the trailhead from the parking lot. The seven-mile hike will take you through lush, forested areas populated with coastal redwoods, Douglas firs, manzanita and bay trees, paralleling and crossing babbling creeks and crystal clear cascading waterfalls. Magnificent ocean and valley views await you on the hike. Your journey will end just outside scenic Stinson Beach, where you can either catch the bus back to your car, or turn around and climb back up Steep Ravine trail. Some hikers opt for taking legendary Matt Davis Trail for the return trip. This trail, while slightly longer than Steep Ravine, is not as steep, and ends near the Pantoll Ranger Station. The trailhead is located off Highway 1 on Panoramic Highway.

Take a naturalist led tour or take one on your own as a self-guided tour. Main Trail: Petrified Redwoods, ½ mile, rated moderate. Enjoy a stroll through their beautiful forest trail where you will be able to observe the awesome spectacle of massive fallen fossil trees and the incredible detail of preservation they present. The trees were turned to stone due to an explosive local eruption in the vicinity of Mt. St. Helena. Meadow Trail: View of Mt. St. Helena, Volcanic ash fall, ½ mile rated moderate. Go a little further and you will be rewarded with a view of the remains of the ancient volcano that buried these now fossilized redwoods 3.4 million years ago. After taking a break to enjoy the view of the mountain through a beautiful meadow, have a walk around the corner and you will discover the striking view of the ash fall that contains diverse deposits of volcanic debris such as tuff, rhyolite, iron concretions, obsidian, as well as the ubiquitous petrified wood shards. Redwood Trail: Hike through a living redwood grove, 1 mile, rated moderately difficult. Their new trail provides a lovely walk that winds through a forest of pacific madrone, tan oaks, Douglas fir, and the beautiful groves of redwood trees providing an immediate comparison between the living and the petrified. They open this trail for guided walks every weekend at 11:15. Tours: (Same price as general admission) 11am and 3pm tour of main trail and meadow trail, 1-1.5 hours, 1 mile 1:00 pm tour of the main trail, 45 minutes-1 hour, ½ mile. Old Faithful Geyser

Beginning near the Ferry Terminal in historic Vallejo (thus linking with the greater Bay Area), the Vine Trail continues north for 47 miles, through the world-renowned vineyards and towns of Napa Valley, to its northern gateway in Calistoga at the Oat Hill Mine Trail (Hwy 29 at Silverado Trail) at the foot of Mount St. Helena.
