WELCOME

THE WORLD ON STAGE I am so pleased to share our plans for the second season of ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage. In 2011/12 we’ll present a broad range of human experience—from indomitable spirits who overcome totalitarianism, phobias, patriarchy or Arctic cold to savvy individuals who tackle life’s ups and downs with strength, song and humor. These performances feature striking spectacle and stirring music and sound, yet their rich storytelling is what I find most compelling. John Malkovich as a serial killer (with opera!), Martha Clarke and Alfred Uhry’s musical exploration of the Shaker experience, an Irish telling of Moby Dick and Sulayman Al-Bassam’s timely The Speakers Progress, inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night—these works tell stories that cry out to be heard. And while they have intrigued and delighted audiences across the globe, they have not been seen in Boston. The artists hail from Canada, Austria, Kuwait, Ireland and Australia, as well as from across the U.S., and most of these remarkable productions perform in Boston for less than a week, so I encourage you to put them on your calendar now. And please become a member. Our members pay just $60 for discounts all year long, exclusive invitations to behind-the-scenes events, advance access to the best seats and dates, a complimentary ticket* and more. I look forward to seeing you, ArtsEmerson friends new and familiar, in our theatres this season. Warmly,

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH: OUR VALUES IN QUESTION THE FOUNDRY THEATRE

Be part of the first ever “audience performance company” and contribute to the creation of How Much is Enough, which explores our fundamental concepts of value—quantitatively through our relations to money and qualitatively by asking what we hold dear. “Asking” is the operative word, as the play itself is a series of questions posed to audience members, creating a lively talk show environment that discusses how participants have lived their lives, what plans they’ve made for the future and what advice they can offer as we all attempt to create lives of value. How Much Is Enough...asks the audience to think about value—and the questioning begins right now. There are three general admission prices. Pick the price you think is fair given your interest and economic ability.

DELUSION LAURIE ANDERSON

At the heart of Delusion, an evening of Laurie Anderson’s personal meditations on life, language, memory and identity, is the belief that words and stories can create the world, as well as make it disappear. Even if you’ve had the chance to see Anderson in concert or on screen, her fullscale, live performance art will sweep you away in a stunning collage of visual imagery, electronic soundscape and spoken vignette—the poetic language that has become Laurie Anderson’s trademark.

“Laurie Anderson is one of the most influential performance artists of our time. Although she has performed in concert in Boston, rarely has her work been seen like this in full theatrical regalia with her signature multi-media landscape. THE INFERNAL COMEDY Confessions of a Serial Killer

JOHN MALKOVICH

“It isn’t easy to kill someone every night on stage. And the more people you kill, the harder it gets. Especially when I kill them as terribly as I do in this show.” –John Malkovich A cross between chilling crime drama and Baroque opera with a live orchestra on period instruments, The Infernal Comedy is based on the life story of twice-imprisoned serial killer Jack Unterweger (played by Malkovich). Mysteriously back from the grave for an autobiographical book tour, Unterweger oozes disconcerting charm, as he narrates his sordid and shocking history. Each chapter concludes with an aria from Gluck, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi and more, sung live by stunning sopranos—all too tempting prospects for Unterweger’s bloodlust. American premiere

THE SPEAKER’S PROGRESS

A VARIATION ON SHAKESPEARE’S TWELFTH NIGHT

SULAYMAN AL-BASSAM THEATRE (SABAB)

In a totalitarian state somewhere in the Arab World, all forms of theatre have been banned, but a condemned 1960’s classic play has become the focal point for resistance blogs and underground, dissident Twitter movements… The Speaker’s Progress uses Twelfth Night as a starting point to explore events in the Middle East, transforming Shakespeare’s comedy into a satire on the decades of political inertia that have fed recent revolts across the Arab region and a daring theatrical metaphor for the mechanisms of dissent. The piece will evolve as circumstances in the region change, emphasizing the rapid pace of revolution among courageous citizens seeking freedom. This is a rare chance to see a major Middle Eastern theatre company’s provocative and inspiring work.

“Twelfth Night takes on new ironies, revelations and surprises when seen through the lens of the modern Arab World. Many of the best actors from across the Middle East populate this exuberant re-imagining of Shakespeare’s comedy, and with enormous intensity and courage, they act out their own history. So much is at stake for them and for us.” Rob Orchard, ArtsEmerson

YOU BETTER SIT DOWN: TALES FROM MY PARENTS’ THE CIVILIANS

“My therapist told me to buy you a punching bag because I said, ‘what can I do to help my kids’ and she said, ‘go buy a punching bag.’” You Better Sit Down is a hysterical account of marriage and divorce, based on The Civilians artists’ interviews with their sardonic, candid, and lovable parents. Four actors—each playing his or her own parents—are conduits of their parents’ stories and, sometimes inadvertently, of their own experiences of family division. At ArtsEmerson, a coda will be added featuring young artists from Emerson College.

MABOU MINES DOLLHOUSE

ADAPTED FROM A DOLL’S HOUSE BY HENRIK IBSEN

The dollhouse is a man’s world and only doll-like women who allow their men to feel grand can hope to live in it. You may think you’ve seen Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, but acclaimed director and MacArthur Fellow Lee Breuer gives this world of patriarchy and pretense a new twist—the all-powerful male characters are less than 4 ½ feet tall and the women 6 feet tall. Here Ibsen’s feminism is metaphorically rendered as a parable of scale, and this unusual take on the physical world of the play results in startling insights and unexpected humor. This production is perhaps the most celebrated among a range of experimental, contemporary interpretations of classic works.

MOBY DICK

GARE ST. LAZARE PLAYERS IRELAND

Herman Melville’s whirling, eddying tale will have you hanging on every word, from the wary description of Ishmael’s seedy lodgings in New Bedford, MA to his awed picture of the maelstrom which churns the cursed Pequod to its watery grave. Catching the mischievous humor and wisdom of Ishmael’s commentary, Lovett holds audiences captivated during this classic tale of a mythic sea monster, the vengeful Captain Ahab and their epic ocean journey aboard The Pequod. Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh’s musical accompaniment provides a poetic counterpoint to Ahab’s raving, fanatical quest. You can almost feel the spray break across the bow.

ANGEL REAPERS

A SHAKER MUSICAL

MARTHA CLARKE AND ALFRED UHRY

What do you get when you combine Pulitzer, Tony and Academy Awardwinning writer Alfred Uhry, MacArthur genius director/choreographer Martha Clarke, traditional Shaker music and sexual repression? Angel Reapers is a lively song and dance piece, inspired by the life of Ann Lee, founder of the Shaker movement. Mother Ann, as she came to be known, was a visionary, mystic and powerful spiritual leader. Her categorical denial of sexuality and determination to erase it from herself and her followers inspires the stunning, rhythmic and often hilarious choreography in Angel Reapers. This multi-disciplinary piece is not biographical in the usual sense, but more loosely constructed, slipping in and out of reality and embracing Ann’s visions and those of her followers. The plot is woven throughout with movement, song and dance to bring to life this extraordinary 18th century woman and the singular world she created.

SUGAR

ROBBIE MCCAULEY

In a journey through her own and others’ sagas of diabetes, Robbie McCauley cracks open silences about the shame, pain and triumphs of people who suffer from ‘a little bit of sugar.’ Robbie has shaped survival tales from her own life and interviews with other diabetics, their families, friends and health care providers both locally and nationally. She’ll share good changes in care for the 1 in 5 people who have what is now admittedly an epidemic. Robbie offers a sugar-free jam. Sugar is the centerpiece of an event sponsored by Emerson College and Artists In Context, which has developed ongoing story circles among diabetics in selected Boston communities, as well as guest lectures and liaisons with civic and health organizations. For more information on the story circles, visit www.artistsincontext.org.

69˚ S.

(THE SHACKLETON Project) PHANTOM LIMB

Phantom Limb’s 69˚S. imagines the unimaginable. Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 trans-Antarctic expedition—the real life story of a group of gentlemen frozen (literally) in crisis—is reignited by a contemporary dilemma: the realities of a changing environment and the planet’s uncertain future. Theatre, dance, puppetry, photography and film unite in an impressionistic, stunning and evocative series of tableaux vivants, taking us on an artistic and emotional journey that explores the symbiotic relationship between humans and the environment and reinvigorates the spirit of foregoing individual glory for the sake of collective survival.

AMERIVILLE

UNIVERSES

Ameriville, a collision of storytelling, spoken word and the infectious rhythms of jazz, gospel and hip hop, will change your concept of “musical theatre.” The viscerally energetic and diverse young team, Universes, put the state of the Union under the microscope and into the microphone, as they spin exquisite harmonies and beatboxing around themes of race, poverty, politics, history and government, examining our country through the lens of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. A modern-day variety show, the piece branches out from stories of post-Katrina New Orleans to the rest of the United States, giving voice to disenfranchised groups and articulating not just the difficulties, but also the underlying strength within America.

THE ANDERSEN PROJECT

EX MACHINA/ROBERT LEPAGE

In this off-the-wall, frequently comic masterpiece by theatre visionary Robert Lepage, Yves Jacques (The Far Side of the Moon) stars as a Canadian rock‘n-roll writer who is unexpectedly commissioned by the Opéra Garnier in Paris to write a libretto for a children’s opera. Arriving in Paris, he discovers that his living quarters are on the last floor of a building that is also home to a peep show in the city’s red light district. Freely inspired by the timeless fables written by Hans Christian Andersen (who as it turns out, didn’t really like children), as well as anecdotes from the author’s personal diaries, The Andersen Project keenly explores unraveling relationships, personal demons, the thirst for recognition, and compromise that comes too late.
