Your safety is our number one priority and we are implementing a robust Covid 19 management plan to ensure you can visit this year’s festival with peace of mind. As society moves out of lockdown and we see the reopening of our city we will continue to apply the latest rules and regulations in relation to how we plan and manage this year’s Mela events. We have taken the decision to run events over a full week so there is something for everyone to enjoy and get involved in without the need to gather in a large crowd, from outdoor events and performances to walking tours and installations. We will be publishing our full safety guidelines for each event on our website, what you can expect for us as festival organisers, and what we expect from you as attendees. Look out for our helpful info icons on each event listing to ensure you understand what safety precautions are at each event.

Belfast’s most loved annual get together is back… but it looks a little different!

It is with great pleasure that we present the 15th annual multiaward winning Belfast Mela, Northern Ireland’s biggest celebration of cultural diversity. Fresh from our highly successful virtual edition last year which attracted an audience over 260,000 people worldwide, we are delighted to be back presenting a live programme for the people of Belfast and beyond. This year’s Mela will see a brand new format created especially to respond to the ongoing challenges of the

Covid 19 pandemic. We have extended the festival over a full week providing opportunities for everyone across the city to take part and celebrate the magic of Mela in a safe and enjoyable way. Whilst we know many of you will miss our traditional festival at Botanic Gardens, we are sure you will find something that appeals to you with global music, dance, food, street theatre, tours and much more across the week.

I would like to pay tribute to all the artists involved in bringing us a bold, vibrant and colourful cultural celebration this year and who have to rose to the challenge to adapt and create unique creative experiences to showcase the city’s diversity. At this year’s Mela, you will see a culmination of a year long outreach programme through special showcases that have been developed with communities across the country.

The year round work of ArtsEkta will continue to play a vital role in our city’s recovery as we work with partners to build back better and re-imagine how citizens can engage with the culture and creativity of the city. Mela will continue to reflect the vibrant, enriched, intercultural and ambitious city Belfast is growing to become and unite all communities to feel a sense of identity, belonging and pride.

As always we would like to thank all our board, staff, volunteers, artists, partners, funders and sponsors. We look forward to welcoming you to the events over the week, and of course returning to Botanic Gardens in 2022. Founder & Executive Director Nisha Tandon OBE

A Message from the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Kate Nicholl Belfast is proud of its unique, vibrant festivals which play a vital role in delivering our 10 year cultural strategy, A City Imagining.

Belfast Mela, produced by ArtsEkta, is the biggest and most colourful celebration of cultural diversity in Northern Ireland and one of the city’s muchloved family festivals. It’s also one of the four major annual events funded by our Cultural Multi-Annual Grants.

And at Belfast City Council, we’re proud of the excellent work that ArtsEkta does to build the capacity, confidence and visibility of our established minority groups and newer communities through cultural participation and celebration. Their main festival, Belfast Mela is central to their work. It’s a festival that reflects Belfast’s welcoming spirit and celebrates our city’s diverse, dynamic and wonderful cultures. The past 18 months have not been easy for our cultural sector and artists, and yet I’ve been overwhelmed at how our imaginative, resilient cultural leaders have adapted their

programmes to deliver such wideranging, entertaining programmes in an incredibly challenging climate. As we emerge from a period of lockdowns, arts and culture will prove key to the city’s recovery. Following the success of last year’s ‘Mela At Home’ virtual event, ArtsEkta has devised a new format for 2021. This year, Mela events will be scattered across the city enabling people to explore the world at Mela in a safe and more socially-distanced way. I hope you enjoy the magic of this year’s Belfast Mela – and seeing some colour, culture and creativity back on our streets this August!

A Message from the First Minister and Deputy First Minister

First Minister, Paul Givan MLA and Deputy First Minister, Michelle O’Neill MLA

We are delighted to welcome the 15th annual Mela to the streets, sites and screens of Belfast – and beyond.

Every year we are impressed with the vision and verve of Nisha Tandon and her team at ArtsEkta. Their hard work and inventiveness is inspiring. Protecting public health is vital, and we would urge everyone to support ArtsEkta in their efforts to keep people safe throughout the Mela.

This is a fantastic opportunity to experience and celebrate our incredible cultural diversity, so we’d encourage everyone to sample and enjoy something the Mela has to offer – whether that’s online or in person.

A Message from the Arts Council of NI, Roisín McDonough, Chief Executive Arts Council of Northern Ireland

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Belfast Mela. If ever there was a time we needed this vibrant, enchanting and uplifting celebration of arts and culture, it’s surely now.

For the arts and cultural sectors, which thrive on live, in-person engagement, social distancing and lockdown has been particularly challenging. The Arts Council and the Department for Communities have been able to provide a lifeline for organisations, including ArtsEkta, through our Emergency Funding Programmes, with additional funding from the Arts Council’s National Lottery fund. So it is tremendously exciting to finally begin to see the return of live arts events. With the Mela’s excellent programme of smaller events across the city we will have the opportunity to enjoy the sights

and sounds of the festival in a safe and socially distanced way, while also being able to enjoy online events from our homes. On behalf of the Arts Council, ArtsEkta’s proud, long-time principal funder, I wish you all a wonderful week of outstanding world arts and culture at the Belfast Mela.
