Day School & Sixth Form Newsletter 28 May 2021
The Headline Firstly, thank you so much for the ‘inundation’ of emails (there is no collective noun for emails so I shall propose this one) congratulating me on my new position with The National College, and on the birth of my son. I was genuinely humbled that so many of you took the time to send in such kind words of support. Mrs. Blake and baby Tom are both doing wonderfully well, and I have realised that I clearly missed a trick in not asking you all to write my reference! Thank you - it really does mean a lot to me that this journey we have taken together has meant so much to you. Secondly, what a wonderfully busy, bustling, buzzy week it’s been here at HQ, with rehearsals galore for shows that are now just around the half-term corner, the very successful A Level Devising Performances, and all the hard-work and dedication that I know have gone into every Assessment and every end of year exam that the pupils and sixth formers have completed this week. It’s been a powerful and poignant reminder of how special this place is, and how special our young people are as people, as learners, and as performers. Next week is the half-term break, and I hope you all have exciting things planned and that the weather is kind especially if you’re planning an outside event, and then we enter the last half-term of the year which is promising to be one filled with performances – and of course Prizegiving 2021. I look forward to seeing as many of you as will be possible as we travel through June and July, and to sharing our events with you as the world hopefully continues to turn a little more normally than it has over the last 18 months. Contemporary dance with Chris Reynolds A release-based technique class focusing on the use of breath and a chance to get moving – open to all abilities. Pilates with Karen Edwards Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.
Club Chi with Ian Snowball During the session Ian will take the students through some easy to learn and follow breathing techniques and Tai Chi movements, that are designed to help with relaxation and calmness. Mindfulness with Mara Leah An afternoon meditation followed by a series of mindfulness activities to help us all de-stress during this difficult time.
Well done! Alistair Hendry, Matt Oliver and Morty Bisnought, spent last weekend Kayaking from Reading to Hammersmith Bridge and camping on the way. After three very wet tough days they raised £4,511 for Mind BLMK Donate here They organized this independently.

100 Jobs for 100 Years Daphne Passaris Costume Design A basic overview of what the job is/what it entails: A costume designer is a person who designs costumes for a film, stage production or television show. The role of the costume designer is to create the characters' outfits/costumes, and to balance the scenes with texture and colour, etc. They start by working with the writers, the production designer and the hair and makeup designers to create an accurate depiction of the director's vision. ● A costume designer considers when composing the costuming of the entire cast might include putting the leading characters in more noticable clothing. ● Working within a restricted color pallette, or demonstrating relationships among characters through silhouette or color to create emphasis or subtlety. ● The majority of designers travel to fashion and trade shows to learn about the latest trends in fashion. What qualifications/ training you will need to become a costume designer? Costume Designers need a degree or postgraduate qualification in subjects like Costume Design, Textiles, Fashion or Theatre Design. Internships and apprenticeships are a great way to start gaining job experience and enables training designers to learn from designers with much more experience in the field. Some experienced designers may be able to earn between £18,000 and £28,000 a year with highly experienced designers earning upwards of £35.000. How many hours does a costume designer do ? A Costume Designer can typically be working five to six days a week, sometimes between eight to sixteen hours per day if they are on a deadline.
