Day School & Sixth Form Newsletter 1 April 2021

Sixth Form Update Just like that we are at the end of another term! There have been many challenges in our return to the building inlcuding in-school testing, at home testing, social distancing, and even that forgotten skill of being social! But our young people have handled them all brilliantly. We have even been lucky enough to witness some live theatre in the form of in-class assessments. This week we invited guest speaker Lily Soutter to talk to Year 12 and 13 about all things nutrition and wellness. The student voice has been heard and the School Council are currently working on a revised dress code for Sixth Form students. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this term for me personally is being back in the studio, creating performance work and seeing first-hand the amazing progress that has been made by our fantastic students while they have been working from home. I hope everyone enjoys the Easter Workshops have a great time and I look forward to seeing many of you during rehearsal week. Don’t forget to find some time to rest over the break. Mark Ferrington Director of Sixth Form

RAD Vocational Exams Congratulations to the DG2 Ballet class. Ten Year 9 students had the experience of taking their RAD Vocational Intermediate exam on Wednesday in quite different circumstances due to the current global situation. For the first time in the history of the Day School the exams took place on site and were filmed before being sent to a RAD headquarters. Well done for all your hard work and dedication as practicing your ballet online at home was definitely not easy. And with only 3 weeks back in the studio since Christmas to prepare, you have made me very proud with all your professionalism. Miss Rowland

Hi everyone, We did it! We’ve gotten through one of the most challenging terms this year has presented. From being online in January to finally returning to school at the start of the March, we’ve accomplished a lot. ArtsEd’s Got Talent 2021 proved to be a great evening of entertainment, and raised almost £600 for good causes including Acting for Others, a charity which provides emotional and financial support to all theatre workers in times of need. We’re so proud of all our Y13s who have been persevering through what has been a very different HE audition season with self-taped preliminary

This term, the School Council have been updating the dress code to include more inclusive, genderneutral language and uniform regulations which are more fitting for today’s society. School Captains Log! Hello everyone! It has been so good to be back in the building doing what we do best and seeing everyone creating fantastic work! Just being back in studios, having in-person teaching/ mentoring, and being able to work collaboratively again has been the positive boost we have all have needed to generate motivation to be working to our full-potential once again. The Year 13 Actors have been working towards some exciting units, including their Directing Unit where they are put into groups of three and take turns to direct each other in a play of their choice. This week there was a ‘mini Edinburgh Fringe’ and it was so exciting having an audience again! Since coming back, the MT’s have been getting stuck into rehearsals for their musical, Zombie Prom, which is starting to piece together and will be a fabulous way

to end the year, along with Cabaret. We were all super proud of how far we’ve all come over our time so far at arts which has been highlighted in the recent auditions. The mutual support that has been shown from both the group and the teachers has been overwhelming and has made for the best atmosphere for everyone as we enter our final term. The Dancers have been extremely successful this audition season with promising prospects for their journey beyond ArtsEd! They have made a great start to Dance Show rehearsals which have been thoroughly enjoyable! It will be great for them to perform to a live audience once again!

them next term, alongside their Year 12 Musicals! The actors have been working on naturalism in their Principles of Acting unit and have just been cast for their nonnaturalistic plays which will be a very exciting project for the Summer Term! The dancers have been creating their own choreography which we’re sure was a fun form of expression for them as they have been back in large studio spaces!

In Year 12 the MT’s have been prioritising their Jukebox Musicals this term, which were performed this week! They have been making a start on their Sondheim group projects which will be another fun performance opportunity for

All the best!

We hope everyone has a restful Easter break! Relax, eat lots of chocolate, and come back refreshed for the final term! It’s going to be busy but no doubt the best term so far!
