ART & PLACE

ARTS COUNCIL GALLERY ADDITION AT CAMPBELL HOUSE

Photograph by John Gessner

Combining art and place, the Arts Council of Moore County has launched an ambitious campaign to expand the Campbell House with a gallery addition that will strengthen the region’s cultural infrastructure and broaden public access to the arts. The project pairs careful historic preservation with functional new space: 1,750 square feet to the south side of the house to provide new exhibition areas, plus supporting rooms and upgraded site amenities designed to make the Campbell House a major arts destination. The Campbell House, located at 482 East Connecticut Avenue in Southern Pines, carries deep local significance. A portion of the house was part of the original Boyd mansion (once located 100 feet in front of present-day Weymouth Center), moved across the street in the early 1920s. Mr. & Mrs. W.D. Campbell purchased the house in 1946, and renovated it into the fine example of Georgian architecture you see today. The Campbell family gifted the 14-acre property to the Town of Southern Pines in 1965 with the express wish that it be used “for exclusively public purposes.” For more than a century, the house has served as a civic and cultural hub—utilized by such groups as the Arts Council, Southern Pines Parks & Recreation, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and many other community organizations. The Arts Council’s campaign seeks a total of $3.5 million, divided into two principal needs: a portion for construction and the rest to establish an endowment for ongoing stewardship of the house and grounds. Preserving the Campbell House’s historic character is central to the project. Liberatos Architects — a Charleston, SC firm experienced in traditional architecture and historic additions — has been hired to design the expansion. Their approach is to create a new gallery space as a sympathetic addition to the early 20th century structure, while accommodating contemporary gallery standards for large-scale and traveling exhibitions. The addition will also include a secondary small gallery, a meeting room, two ADA public restrooms, and elevators for access to the second floor and to the basement for storage. The project has secured approval from the Town of Southern Pines, the property owner, and financial support from the Campbell family and a growing list of generous patrons. The Arts Council hopes to break ground in 2027, aligning South yard location of the future gallery addition (continued on page 7) -5-

capital improvements with a garden landscape restoration and interpretation of the site’s layered history. Recognizing the importance of its beautiful setting, the project also includes landscape restoration led by Glenn Bradley, an award-winning Southern Pines landscape engineer. Using the original 1948 design, Bradley is in the process of rehabilitating the grounds to reflect the period when the Campbells occupied the home. The landscape work will restore historic vistas and hardscapes, improve site sustainability and circulation, and create outdoor spaces that complement the Arts Council programming and other community events. One of the campaign’s signature components will be a decorated plaster ceiling in the new large gallery. The ceiling project is conceived not merely as ornament but as a public-art attraction to draw people to East Connecticut Avenue (a North Carolina Scenic Byway), and anchor the gallery interior with a distinct, locally rooted aesthetic. The ceiling will feature decorative plasterwork created by Patrick Webb, embellished with painted panels by local classical artist, D. Jeffrey Mims. The ceiling will evoke the fresco traditions found in historic churches in western North Carolina and contain narrative imagery of native flora and fauna. Beyond bricks and mortar, the campaign recognizes the long-term costs of caring for a historic property and maintaining vibrant programming. To that end, the Arts Council has established an endowment to support upkeep, programming and stewardship of the Campbell House. The endowment will ensure that the expanded facility remains financially resilient and can continue serving the community for decades to come. With the added gallery space and accessible facilities, the Arts Council expects to increase its capacity to present traveling and large-scale exhibitions, public The Campbell’s original 1948 landscape design lectures, special events, meetings, and educational by Innocenti & Webel Landscape Architects programs. By doing so, the addition will further elevate the Arts Council and the Campbell House as a cultural (continued on page 9) -7-

(continued from page 7) anchor for the Sandhills region, attracting more visitors along the scenic corridor that connects landmarks such as Weymouth Center and Weymouth Woods–Sandhills Nature Preserve. The additional space will also enable more inclusive programming and better accommodate community groups that have long relied on the Campbell House as a public resource. As of this writing, the Arts Council has raised 50% of its goal. We now invite donations from the public and offer opportunities for donors to learn more about the project through personalized meetings. Those interested in supporting this project can learn more at www.MooreArt.org/Addition or contact the Arts Council for details on the many ways to give, naming opportunities, and planned giving that would contribute to the capital campaign, endowment, or both. The Arts Council’s gallery addition project balances respect for the Campbell House’s historic fabric with the need for accessibility, exhibit flexibility, and long-term financial sustainability. Once completed, this project will sustain a beloved local landmark while expanding its capacity to inspire and strengthen our community through the arts for generations to come.

Arts Council Spotlight | We are as good as our people

KATHERINE MACRAE

The Arts Council will have huge shoes to fill when Katherine MacRae retires at the end of 2026. She has been a major part of the Arts Council’s success for over 37 years. Born in Carthage, NC, Katherine had several interesting jobs before becoming the Arts Council’s part-time receptionist in 1989. She was as a flight attendant at American Airlines, editor for a newsletter at NOAA, and worked on NASA’s Arctic Ice Mapping Project. Reflecting on the Arts Council job, she says, “It shortly evolved into much more.” Blessed with grace and poise in any situation, Katherine has been the steady force behind the Arts Council that no job title could accurately convey. While there have been lots of memorable experiences, she particularly recalls: “successfully managing many Something Moore Tag Sales and working with and getting to know the many wonderful potters in North Moore and amazing artists in our area.” Katherine MacRae (white coat) poses at the Her proudest accomplishment has been establishing the Arctic Circle with fellow ARTours travelers successful Arts Council’s ARTours program, which are curated journeys to places of cultural interest—domestic and international. Katherine was the perfect person for this job as nothing phases her. Her meticulous research and planning was on display for every ARTour, from the smooth trips like her first overnight to Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina in 1991, to enjoying two “bonus” days in Casablanca after their return flight from Morocco was unexpectedly canceled. Her skill, competence, and resolve in the face of inevitable travel issues is rare and appreciated by the many ARTours travelers over the years. For the future of the Arts Council, Katherine’s looks forward to some very exciting years ahead with the completion of the gallery addition at Campbell House (See page 5). For what she’s most excited to explore in retirement, she says, “I’m certain the answer will come sooner than later.” Katherine will still be involved with some future ARTours as a leader or traveler, but she does pass on one bit of advice to the next generation: “It’s extremely important to love what you are doing.”

Thank you, Katherine, for making the Arts Council a great community asset!

Quiet Dialogues with Canvas & Paper

September 4-25, 2026 Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House By Sara Lovett

Sharon Ferguson McLeod and Marilyn Vendemia’s works Shell by Sharon Ferguson McLeod are linked together through a long friendship and mutual love of art. After meeting at a local frame shop in Pinehurst, they have now exhibited together four times, including the Arts Council’s September show, Quiet Dialogues with Canvas & Paper. Through a shared passion for painting, Sharon and Marilyn encourage each other not only to find their individual spirit but explore shared ideals about art and life. Most importantly is the respect they have for each other’s process and the courage required when looking to evolve in style, palette, subject matter, or medium. They find joy in exhibiting together and feel their work complements each other, in spite of their contrasting styles. This is perhaps due to the use of the more natural palette they both employ. Thanks to their friendship, the two artists challenge each other to work in unfamiliar styles and to exhibit the results. Sharon grew up in the country outside of Southern Pines, which led to a lifelong passion for the outdoors – the Sandhills in particular. Her artistic interest bloomed from a young age, encouraged by her draftsman father who taught her concepts of values and perspective. From childhood into early adulthood, Sharon continued to create art inspired by the world around her. After high school, she joined the Arts Council where she began regularly exhibiting and building her client base. Starting in 1985, Sharon worked in local frame shops for over 32 years. Framing allowed her to “look at color, composition and values in a whole new way.” Sharon’s style evolved with framing work as well as studying classical realism for three years with D. Jeffery Mims. She now enjoys “drawing from life” employing the technique known as chiaroscuro, using contrast of light and dark to define 3D objects. Marilyn is a self-taught artist from Ohio who lives in Pinehurst and works at a local frame shop. Her paintings are inspired by the east coast, her love of the sea and the outdoors. She paints in various mediums but primarily in oil. She has exhibited both locally and internationally, has won several awards, and is in many commercial and private collections. Marilyn utilizes a technique called tonalism, characterized by a hazy, atmospheric light dominated by a soft, cohesive color palette. A staple of her art is a sense of quiet and serenity. She is “more concerned with feeling, mood and energy than trying recreating the actual form.” This often leads to a more abstract irendering than traditional landscape. Marilyn doesn’t limit herself in style or subject choosing instead to stay open to wherever inspiration takes her. The opening reception for Quiet Dialogues with Canvas & Paper will be Fri., September 4 (6-8pm) at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. The exhibit will be on display September 4-25 (weekdays, Evening Landscape by Marilyn Vendemia 10am-5pm) and Sat., September 19 (12-2pm). The exhibit is free and open to the public. Campbell House is located at 482 E. Connecticut Ave. in Southern Pines. Sara Lovett is a graduate of The O’Neal School, Christopher Newport University, Learn more at MooreArt.org & University of St. Andrews in Scotland. -13-

MUSIC OF FRIENDS 2026-27 Classical Concert Series

The “music of friends” is how British composer & pianist

Richard Walthew defines chamber music due to its conversational and intimate nature. Designed for small rooms rather than large venues, chamber music is considered classical music at its most personal. For our 45th season of the Classical Concert Series, the Arts Council is proud to continue this “friend-making” practice by presenting beautiful moments of sound by some of the world’s best musicians. The series opens on October 19, 2026 with the Chrysalis Chamber Players, an ensemble featuring a string quartet and trumpet committed to performing a kaleidoscope of high caliber chamber music ranging from Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos to the music of living composers. These musicians have performed all over the world, including such venues as the Marlboro Music Festival, Lucerne Festivals in Switzerland, and with the New World Symphony. Chrysalis Chamber Players Our November 16, 2026 concert will feature Chelsea Guo, a rare musician who is equally acclaimed as a pianist and soprano. She has established an international presence since her win in the 2022 Young Concert Artists Int’l. Auditions—the first artist honored as both pianist and vocalist. At San Diego’s 2023 Mainly Mozart Festival, her versatility drew praise for appearing as soprano in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 and pianist in Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Our third concert on February 22, 2027 will feature the Grammy-nominated Texas Guitar Quartet, which has been embraced by the world over for their daring programs, dazzling virtuosity and joyful music making. Co-presented by the Sandhills Community College Fine Arts Dept., TGQ Chelsea Guo pushes the boundaries of the guitar quartet by premiering exciting new works & daring arrangements of orchestral works by Mozart, Beethoven, Ravel & more. Our season finale features the return of violinist Lun Li on March 22, 2027 in a unique concert. Lun has appeared at major venues throughout the world including Konzerthaus Berlin, Kulturpalast Dresden, Wiener Konzerthaus, and The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. His program will explore the theme of perpetual motion and timelessness. Performing on both Baroque & modern violins, this concert highlights the violin’s range and the evolving textures of music across centuries. The Classical Concert Series sponsors are Lin Hutaff’s Pinehurst Realty Group, Brownback & Thomasson CPAs, Philip Bailey & Charles Schwab, Vivian R. Jacobson, Nature’s Own, SCC’s Fine Texas Guitar Quartet Arts Dept., and The Jefferson Inn of Southern Pines. A subscription to all four concerts is $120 per person ($100 for Arts Council members) and available at the Arts Council Galleries (Campbell House, 482 E. Connecticut Ave., So. Pines) or by calling 910-692-2787. Individual tickets are $39 each and will be available after Sep. 19, 2026. All concerts will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunrise Theater. DRIVEN BEAUTY

Celebrating Car Culture Through Art October 2-30, 2026 Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House

My friend & I stopped by the local small town burger place in my ‘68 Mercury Cougar & his imported Brazilian ‘74 Dodge Charger Photograph by David J. Knight

What do you get when you combine photographs of toy cars that look like they're parked in real-world locations, life-like paintings of automobiles that can be mistaken for photographs, and layered car logos and imagery? You get an art show for all ages that turns iconic cars into something immersive, playful and artful. You also get the Arts Council’s show, Driven Beauty, featuring photographs by David J. Knight, paintings by Lory Lockwood, and mixed-media pieces by Tony Watts. The inspiration for David Knight’s photographs came in 2015 from the look of joy on the face of his two and a half year old son, Will, upon receiving his first toy car. The reaction reminded David of his own enjoyment as a kid spending countless hours playing with his toy cars. “Then it clicked,” remembers David, “I grabbed my phone, took a few shots from Will’s point of view, and the Will’s Wheels series came to light.” For the past eleven years, David has photographed toy cars with an iPhone using special angles—or forced perspective—with final edits to make them look as real as possible. All photos are then posted to social Caprice Sun | By David J. Knight media (@dknight25 on Instagram), and the series has grown to about 300 images. David's hope is that his photos take “you back to when you were a child dreaming, playing.” David earned his degree in art history and arts administration from Ohio Wesleyan University. Now retired, he pursues other interests including furniture making, home renovations, hiking, travel, and watching his son swim competitively. Lory Lockwood is an artist who specializes in automobile and motorcycle fine art that she paints in a photorealistic style. Lory's work focuses on details – chrome reflections, bright colors and abstract patterns. Her interests range from vintage, exotic and classic autos like Rolls Royce, Bentley and Mercedes, to bikes such as Harley-Davidson, Gilera and custom choppers. Her oil paintings are inspired by visits to Daytona Bike Week, Laguna Seca Historic Races and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Her fascination with automobiles began while growing up outside Lory Lockwood painting Vette on Vette (continued on page 19) -17-

Missoula Children’s Theatre Returns! Auditions: October 12, 2026 (3:45-5:45pm) Rehearsals: October 12-17 (3:45-8pm) Shows: Oct. 16 (7pm) & Oct. 17 (11am) Location: Moore Montessori School Auditorium (395 E. Massachusetts Ave., Southern Pines) Cost to participate: Free!

Missoula Children’s Theatre returns to Moore County to feature children in grades K-8 in a fresh look at the age-old favorite tale, The Little Mermaid! Deep in the salty waters of the Sassafras Sea, there lived a little mermaid. Her name was Celia. She lived for music. In fact, it was said that she had the loveliest scales in all the Sea. Celia and her three sisters were allowed one visit to the World Above, each on their sixteenth birthday, to learn the secrets of life on dry land. Their discoveries included ferocious dragons, advancing armies and, of course, a handsome and resourceful Prince Charming. In a new version of the age-old tale, lots of music, plot surprises and humor await the audience. For 30 years, the Arts Council has brought the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) to Moore County, in their little red truck, to present a week-long theatre residency. MCT’s mission is to empower children and adults through theatre education and performance to develop lifelong skills while enriching communities worldwide through live productions. This unique program begins with an open group audition and ends with two public performances for family, friends and the community. All MCT shows are original adaptations of children’s stories and fairy tales—a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. Over 55 students are cast and rehearsed throughout the week, learning their lines, songs, and choreography to perform as an ensemble in a full-length musical. MCT provides all the scenery, costumes, props, make-up, and lighting—everything it takes to put on a show…except the cast. Any child in grades K-8 is invited to audition. Participation is free and no theatre experience is necessary. Those auditioning should arrive promptly at 3:45pm on October 12, wear comfortable clothes, and plan to attend the full two-hours audition. Immediately following the auditions, a rehearsal schedule for the entire week will be available and some cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal. Save time at registration by bringing a completed audition form with you, available for download at MooreArt.org/Youth. The public performances of The Little Mermaid will be presented on Fri., October 16 (7pm) and Sat., October 17 (11am) at the Moore Montessori School Auditorium at 395 E. Massachusetts Avenue in Southern Pines. Tickets to each show are $10 per adult and $5 per child (Arts Council members are $5 per adult and children are free). All tickets will be sold at the door. If you have any questions, please contact the Arts Council at Learn more at MooreArt.org 910-692-2787. -21-

NATIVE IDENTITY

November 6 - December 19, 2026 Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House By Sara Lovett

Native Identity showcases local Native American artists and how art helps

shape, reclaim and express personal and community identity. Through a range of styles, viewers will see how each artist translate experience, heritage and belonging into their work. Featured artists include Shantonia Chavis-Bullard, Marcus Dunn, Betty Mangum, and Karina McMillan. Silent Grace by Shantonia Chavis-Bullard Shantonia Chavis-Bullard is a Lumbee artist who was introduced to art at a young age. She earned her bachelor’s degree with a concentration in painting and a master’s degree in arts education from UNC Pembroke. Working primarily with acrylic paints, she expresses views on life and human experiences by exploring themes of memory, identity and womanhood through color, movement and form. Shantonia aims to capture difficult feelings and an understanding of the world through a spiritual connection expressed through art using symbolic figures and expressive environments. Pop Quiz by Marcus Dunn Marcus Dunn is a North Carolina artist who focuses on identity, cultural loss and displacement. He earned his BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts and his MFA in painting from the Savanah College of Art & Design. He works as a visual artist and art instructor at Richmond Community College. Marcus’ art explores assimilationist education and boarding schools that Native Americans were forced into. Using his experiences within the Tuscarora Indians of Kahtenuaka Territories and their attempts to rebuild their own culture, Marcus’ work reflects a sympathy and understanding for his subjects. Betty Mangum began creating art in 2017 after finding inspiration at an art class. Before that, she had a long career in education working in a variety of environments ranging from teacher to county commissioner, often helping implement American Indian curriculum into public education. Being of Lumbee heritage, this was important to her. Betty was later asked to consult for the NC Museum of Art’s exhibit, Indian of the South East. In her art, Betty paints what she describes as simple scenes of people, oceans and more. Betty Mangum with Karina McMillan began creating art as a child with the encouragement of her father. The Indians Came A Lumbee artist, Karina looks to memory, cultural continuity, as well as personal & Indigenous history through her own lens. Through a variety of mediums but favoring ballpoint pens, she juxtaposes the idea of an everyday tool to create intricate works often inspired by historical art. She looks to honor art of the past while contributing her own perspective—preserving and reimaging narratives of Indigenous identity. The opening reception for Native Identity will be Fri., November 6 (6-8pm) at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. The exhibit will be on display Nov. 6-Dec. 19 (weekdays, 10am-5pm) and Sat., Nov. 21 and Dec. 19 (12-2pm). The exhibit is free and open to the public. Campbell House is located at 482 E. Connecticut Ave. in Southern Pines. Sara Lovett is a graduate of The O’Neal School, Christopher Newport University, & University of St. Andrews Lumbee Woman by Learn more at MooreArt.org Karina McMillan in Scotland. -23-

Attention & Intention January 8 - February 12, 2027 Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House By Sara Lovett

Tara Thacker and Eric Serritella met in 2021

Tara Thacker working on a ceramic wall sculpture during artist residencies at StarWorks NC and have been collaborating ever since. Both work in ceramics, yet their styles are visually different — Tara focuses on abstraction, while Eric specializes in realism. However, they are united by shared creative philosophies and approaches. Bound by a mutual focus on their surroundings for inspiration, both artists explore themes of connection and conservation in their work. Tara and Eric collaborate in shared studios and exhibitions. Working together allows them to talk about what inspires them and how to bring that into their art. They recently completed residency fellowships at the Monte Azul Center for Contemporary Art in Costa Rica. Several pieces from this residency will be included in Attention & Intention – inspired by the Costa Rican jungle – exploring messages of observation, memory and reflection. Currently living in Moore County, Tara Thacker is best known for her ceramic sculptures and large-scale wall art. She studied ceramics at Virgina Commonwealth University where she earned her BFA and then gained her MFA from the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2025, she was awarded the North Carolina Artist Support Grant to attend the residency at the Monte Azul Center. Tara’s current work explores the avian world using a repetition of form and material in clay, creating layered works referencing bird wings and nesting habitats. The decline of the avian population and their habitats due to agricultural practices and climate change are the main ideas in her art. She hopes observers reflect and understand the importance of habitat preservation when viewing her work. Eric Serritella is best known for his sculptures. His trompe l’oeil art – an effect that tricks the viewer into seeing a flat surface as a real 3D space or object – can be traced to his study in Taiwan with master potters. Eric’s sculptures begin intuitively with a piece of clay using no models or samples of the wood he intends to emulate. Texture and details are hand carved into the clay and then fired after color is added. In 2020, Eric began working with glass, using the new medium to channel emotion and connection. Each work is first created in clay then cast in glass. Eric states, “the exploration of color and transparency of glass have opened an entirely new and exciting world.” Through his art, Eric aims to speak to environmental awareness with hope to affect the viewer’s behaviors toward the environment. Eric has exhibited in over 160 shows and many of his works are held in museum collections. He was given the James Renwick Alliance Award in 2016 and in 2018 his show was recommended by The New York Times and praised by Architectural Digest. The opening reception for Attention & Intention will be Fri., January 8 (6-8pm) at the Arts Council Galleries at Campbell House. The exhibit will be on display Onwards & Upwards, ceramic by Eric Serritella January 8 through February 12 (weekdays, 10am-5pm) and Sat., January 16 (12-2pm). The exhibit is free and open to the public. Campbell House is located at 482 E. Connecticut Ave. in Southern Pines. Sara Lovett is a graduate of The O’Neal School, Christopher Newport University, & University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
