PRESIDENT'S LETTER

HEALTH & HAPPINESS

FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS As we look toward the holidays and the welcoming of a shiny New Year, we are mindful of the gifts that 2021 brought with it… including the full reopening of live theatre to our stage! It’s a magical time at the Arts Center as the lights surrounding the Arts Center twinkle, following our community-wide Christmas Tree Lighting Festival held on November 20th, where we collected unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items for Deep Well from generous islanders and visitors. Together, we rang in the holiday season with entertainment, crafts, and food, with many thanks to the Town of Hilton Head Island. A meaningful seasonal tradition at the Arts Center is the “Tree of Life” in the Theater Lobby, which was started by our cherished Lee family. Each year, it is dedicated in memory of organ donors and in honor of recipients, represented by each angel ornament on the tree. I am filled with gratitude for the outpouring of support, not only this year, but over the past 18 months during this unprecedented time. We so greatly value the support of those who attend our productions, presentations, educational programs and festivals; our treasured donors; our wonderful volunteers; and the Arts Center staff who work tirelessly to make it all come together.

As we ring in the New Year, we are thrilled for what the upcoming months will bring to our stage! From the Grammy Award-winning Gullah/Jazz music group Ranky Tanky (March 10), the breathtakingly innovative dance of Charlotte Ballet (March 25), not to mention our own highly anticipated production of the Tony Award-winning Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time in February. Also Saturday, February 12 is our free Taste of Gullah festival, featuring incredible Gullah food, music, arts and crafts and more! There’s so much more to come in 2022! We are extremely blessed to be able to create and share these enriching events to share with you, our own family of supporters and our visitors It truly is the most wonderful time of the year; and it's my wish for all of us to foster kindness, inclusion, and peace as we celebrate all that makes us unique. My warmest wishes to you during the holidays and in the New Year!

T H E AT E R S E R I E S

A HOLIDAY HIT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! Based on the eponymous 2003 Christmas film, Elf, The Musical introduces us to a young orphan named Buddy, who mistakenly crawled into Santa’s bag of gifts and was then transported to the North Pole. Raised by elves his entire life, Buddy doesn’t know he is actually a human. When his enormous size and poor toy making ability cause him to face the snow-cold hard facts, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Buddy soon finds out that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn't even believe in Santa, both of which make him even more determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. The Arts Center is delighted to be producing this modern-day holiday classic, directed and choreographed by NYC’s Mark Martino (Newsies, White Christmas, Kiss Me Kate). He leads a stellar cast including Conor McShane (Buddy), Emily Grace Tucker (Jovie), Jesse Sharp (Walter), John Ahlin (Santa) and, new to the Arts Center stage – local youth actor JP Carr (Michael), among a talented host of performers.

Martino is excited to be back at the Arts Center for his sixth show here, and said, “This show is so much more than even the beloved movie. Big numbers, singing, dancing, make Elf, The Musical a holiday must-see! I can’t wait for Lowcountry residents and visitors to experience the thrill of this joyful show as only live theatre can deliver!” Back at the Arts Center again is Bryson Baumgartel who is Musical Director; and yes, Virginia, there is a live orchestra! The musicians are actually under the stage, and the pit is closed, so many audience-goers have been unaware of the talent below the stage. They are as stealthy, as well … elves. Elf, The Musical runs from December 8 through January 2, and is the most fun you’ll have this season getting in the holiday spirit! Preview performances (Dec. 8–9) are $56 for adults; and $51 for children (ages 5-15) regular performances (Dec. 10 – Jan. 2) are $61 for adults; and $56 for children (ages 5-15). Tickets may be purchased at tickets.artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-ARTS (2787). Get yours today, because, after all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear. THE BESTSELLING NOVEL THAT BECAME THE AWARDWINNING PLAY You may have seen your fair share of murder mysteries on stage and screen, but you’ve never seen one as imaginative, stimulating, and visually dazzling as The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Nighttime, on our stage February 2 – 20, 2022. The marvel of this unconventional story emanates from its main character, Christopher Boone: a 15 year-old British teen on the autism spectrum, who has a distinct way of viewing the world. He hates the color yellow; loves red and metallics. Avoids strangers; favors animals, especially his pet rat Toby. Sees every detail; loathes being touched. Enjoys math; resents metaphors and lies.

Likewise, Director Whitaker Gannon hopes that the show itself will help audience members expand their conceptions of autism. She explains, “The autistic experience can vary widely, and Christopher’s story is only one example. However, the universality here is that it’s easy to underestimate someone without taking the time to understand.” Creating an authentic representation of autism is paramount, and Whitaker is thrilled to have found a brilliant actor who happens to be on the spectrum to play Christopher in our production.

"HAVING AN ACTOR WITH AUTISM TO EMBODY CHRISTOPHER & HELP US BRING HIS STORY TO LIFE IS TRULY INVALUABLE."

The play begins with Christopher standing next to the body of his neighbor’s dog, who’s been speared with a pitch fork. Determined to solve the murder and clear his name, Christopher embarks on an investigation of his own. As he delves into his detective work, he unearths even deeper mysteries about his own life and the chaotic world around him, galvanizing him on a thrilling, yet challenging odyssey to bring the logic and order he craves back into his life.

Additionally, the implementation of exciting visuals, sound, and more stylized storytelling elements creates a visceral and immersive kaleidoscopic series of scenes, inviting us experience events, memories, and imaginings as Christopher does.

Throughout this transformative comingof-age journey, Christopher discovers that he is capable of much more than he realized, and that knowledge changes the lives — and in many cases, the myopic perspectives — of those closest to him.

Blending clever wit with an aching humanity, Curious Incident is a life-affirming reflection on the ways we look at the world. Tickets go on sale December 20. To get yours, visit tickets.artshhi.com or call (843) 842-ARTS (2787).

Showcasing Lowcountry rhythms, blues, and jazz, the Grammy-award-winning band Ranky Tanky comes to the Arts Center stage March 10 for an exhilarating night of upbeat music you won’t want to miss. This Charleston-based quintet performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. Ranky Tanky, which loosely translates to “get funky,” mixes elements of African music with American gospel and R&B, and the result is pure magic! This band can take tunes from yesterday and make them sound as lively and relevant as 21st-century electronic beats.

“THIS GROUP ISN’T BOUND TO ANY ONE PARTICULAR MUSICAL GENRE, AND IT IS GROUNDED INSTEAD BY AN ENIGMATIC, UNSHAKEABLE AND UNSPOILED TRADITION THAT’S LONG BEEN HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT.” – JAZZIZ MAGAZINE

Formed in 2016, the South Carolina quintet of Clay Ross, Kevin Hamilton, Quentin Baxter, Charlton Singleton and Quiana Parler debuted their eponymous album just a year later and garnered a career-catapulting interview with NPR’s Terry Gross, as well as an appearance on “The Today Show.” Their album Good Time, which features a mixture of traditional Gullah tunes as well as originals, won a Grammy award in 2020, the first time Gullah music captured this top honor. And if this group’s immense popularity is any indication, it won’t be the last. Clay Ross, one of Ranky Tanky’s founders, recently told PBS NewsHour, “You know, this music has called to me. It's inspired me. And it's been a part of my life for over two decades. There's no one out there doing a contemporary expression of our South Carolina roots music, and specifically Gullah music.” In addition to winning the Grammy, the band’s work has made it to No. 1 in jazz on Billboard, iTunes, and Amazon charts. Tickets for this highly anticipated musical event, March 10 at 7:30pm, are $52 and on sale now. Visit tickets.artshhi.com or call the box office at (843) 842-ARTS (2787). WINTER 2021/22

MEET JAN SMITH

OUR NEW SENIOR DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT New to the Arts Center team is Janet “Jan” Smith, the newly appointed Senior Director of Development, taking over the role from her predecessor Linda Bloom, who is embracing a new chapter of retirement and enjoying grandmotherhood.

With a heart for children and an education background, Jan is inspired to raise support for the stellar educational offerings at the Arts Center, and the organization as a whole.

Jan’s philosophy in life has threaded through her career in non-profit management and development, which is to give back by offering a better quality of life to others. As a previous foster parent and adoptive parent, and a 20-year non-profit veteran, she’s honed her philanthropic aptitude by connecting those who have with those who have-not.

Jan strives to live a healthy lifestyle infused with a sense of adventure and curiosity. She bikes, hikes, gardens (is currently trying to grow a lemon tree) and cooks. Her highest priorities in life are her kids Lisa (and grandson Shawn), Kirtlynd, and Nick, and she says she continually “hounds them” to visit more often!

Jan has been a familiar face in the Lowcountry since 2005. Career highlights include an impactful tenure as Executive Director of The Children’s Center. She led, along with her team, the successful completion of a capital campaign, resulting in the phenomenal early childhood center for at-risk families. In addition, Jan worked with the international organization Save the Children, facilitating childrens’ humanitarian projects for the border immigration crisis, as well as spearheading a number of disaster relief efforts. Most recently, Jan was the Development Director for the Lowcountry non-profit organization Memory Matters.

“We are delighted to have Jan as part of our Arts Center family,” stated CEO/President Jeffrey Reeves. “She has already jumped in with both feet, and it feels like she’s been with us for much longer than just a few months. Jan’s a wonderful addition to our staff.” Jan fully embraces all that our community has to offer and looks forward to meeting those of you she hasn’t yet had the pleasure of getting to know. Help us in welcoming Jan to the Arts Center family! If you would like to arrange a coffee or chat with Jan, please email or call her at jsmith@artshhi.com or (843) 686-3945 x 303.
