Welcome to Our 25th Anniversary Season

T

he well wishes of “Happy New Year” seemed more significant this year, didn’t they? To say that 2020 was fraught with challenges is a vast understatement. Hopefully it won’t be long before we can all look to the future with renewed optimism.

At the Arts Center, we have reason to feel increasingly optimistic. 2021 marks our 25 th Anniversary Season, and it is a milestone of our legacy as we salute the past, celebrate the present, and build the future.

Part of moving forward, certainly for us as a theater and as a non-profit, is getting back to what we do so well — producing, creating, entertaining, educating, and inspiring. We have raised the curtain, and this past fall, we showcased nine world-class presenting artists, with numerous safety measures in place, and a government-mandated 50% capacity for audiences. (See page 42 for more on the Safety Protocols we’ve implemented).

In November, we were delighted to host the Annual Town of Hilton Head’s Official Tree Lighting for the 25 th time, continuing this seasonal tradition in a less traditional fashion. We live-streamed the event on Facebook, and later broadcast the festivities throughout the holidays, courtesy of our friends at the Beaufort County Channel.

Though it wasn’t our usual format, it truly felt good to safely have a sense of community and celebration once again.

We are overjoyed to produce theatre again, offering Noises Off to you this February, with more on the way.

During last year’s eight-month hiatus from live entertainment, plans were being made and remade! Our team went through 14 iterations of our budgets and schedules for this season. The word “pivot” was quickly adopted as our mantra.

It was also a time of creativity and virtual exploration. New and exciting programs were born, including our latest undertaking, the Arts Center’s SecondStage. (See page 17 to find out more about this exciting endeavor.)

It was also a time of reflection. What more can we do? How can we expand opportunities to become even more inclusive? These discussions continue, and a newly formed Equity, Diversity & Inclusion committee of staff members will lead us toward further growth in these areas.

It was — and remains — a time of gratitude. We are truly grateful for our Arts Center family of supporters, because without you, we would not be producing, creating, educating or even moving ahead at all at this time.

It is because of you we are here as we toast a wonderful 25 years of theatre, with much more around the corner to celebrate. Together.

Hats Off to Noises Off JUST PURE FUN!

THIS ARTS CENTER PRODUCTION IS A HILARIOUS WAY TO RELAUNCH LIVE THEATRE THIS NEW YEAR! Michael Frayn's Tony Award-winning play about putting on a stage comedy is breathlessly clever and funny, becoming a staple of the contemporary theater repertoire. With its countless plates of sardines and slamming doors, this show brings belly laughs and just pure joy to audiences.

The high-energy direction of Brad DePlanche (Neil Simon’s Rumors) makes this wellchoreographed comedy pure genius, with a brilliantly imagined set (designed

by Charles Kading) that revolves on a turntable, so that you literally see “behind the scenes” of this play-within-a-play as the set turns, front to back, in the second act.

According to DePlanche, “If you liked Rumors, which was about a dinner party gone wrong, you’ll love Noises Off which is about an entire PL AY gone wrong!

I’m so excited for you to get the chance to see this incredible show and enjoy the thrill of live theatre again. Noises Off is considered one of the funniest plays ever written … and for very good reason.”

Noises Off follows a troupe of has-been, never-was, and wanna-be British actors as they rehearse their upcoming production

of Nothing On. Their wonderfully pretentious director, Lloyd Dallas (played by the talented Christopher Patrick Mullen) is desperately trying to finish mounting their new bedroom farce, which will open the next day as part of their tour of rural Britain. The stakes are high!

TERMINUS MODERN BALLET THEATRE

Magnificent Modern Dance Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre has since dazzled audiences, bringing its magic of movement to the Arts Center for one public performance, March 26 at 7:30pm.

Terminus was the brainchild of a veritable supergroup of five principal dancers, formerly tenured at Atlanta Ballet: Heath Gill, Tara Lee, John Welker, Rachel Van Buskirk and Christian Clark. Together, they embarked on a mission to create their own unique vision, resulting in a modern dance troupe that has garnered impressive national attention.

Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre is both a recognition of Atlanta's founding name (the city was first named Terminus for its rail location in the early 1800s) and the intersection at which new and creative beginnings are made. By blending classical and contemporary dance forms with the strengths of each of its principal artists, the company has become celebrated for the creation of daring and theatrical dance works.

In 2018, Terminus School of Modern Ballet was born, designed to train the next generation of aspiring dancers by combining the rigor of ballet with the intuitive style of contemporary dance.

On March 25, local dancers can come to the Arts Center to learn from these talented artists, during a master class led by Dance Company members (See details below).

In the days leading up to the public performance, the Arts Center has the company scheduled for a multitude of artist residencies, provided to students in the area as part of our outreach.

Through the art of storytelling and the beauty of movement, this company boldly expands the conventional definitions of ballet. A magical performance!

RUTH GERMANY

Volunteerism is Her Middle Name IT’S NO SECRET THROUGHOUT THE LOWCOUNTRY THAT IF YOU RING RUTH GERMANY’S PHONE, ASKING FOR HELP, SHE WILL READILY ANSWER THE CALL. SHE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT WHERE SHE’S FROM, NEEDLESS TO SAY. “Hilton Head Island is my home and when my husband and I moved back here from New York, what we wanted to do was to give back to the community. You name it, I’ve been a part of it,” Ruth says.

Ruth was born to Edward, Jr. and Eugenia Wright Lawyer, the youngest of 12 children.

The family lived in the Squire Pope community where everybody was on horses, and there were very few cars at that time.

Ruth in her 20s

She attended Mount Calvary Baptist Church and was baptized in the waters by Benny Hudson’s Seafood. After her mother passed away unexpectedly when Ruth was 15, she left for New York and lived with her sisters.

She completed high school then served in the Air Force for seven years, discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

For 32 years, she worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and simultaneously graduated from the American Institute of Banking and attended Pace University, earning a Business Administration degree in Finance.

She met and married Augusta native Clarence Germany in the Big Apple.

The couple retired to the Lawyer’s family property on Hilton Head in 1993. Sadly, her husband passed away less than two years afterwards. Over the next few decades, Ruth shared her knowledge, expertise, and good old fashioned “roll up your sleeves” attitude where it was most needed.

She helped to establish the area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. “Also, Deep Well was one of the first places I volunteered.

Through their Livable Housing program, we showed residents how to clean their houses. I’m still on their board but I don’t clean anybody’s house!” she adds, laughing.

Physical work has never been an obstacle for the now octogenarian. “I helped to build a Habitat for Humanity house with women from Providence Presbyterian Church, where I continue to serve as a church elder.”

Among her service endeavors, Ruth has volunteered at Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, NIBCA A, Bluffton Self Help and many other organizations.

She served as founding chair of the Gullah Museum which presented her with an award for her many years of service to the community at the museum’s “Honoring the Gullah Women” gala on January 19, 2020.

We are proud to include and honor this amazing lady of the Lowcountry in our OnCenter magazine.

A Taste of Gullah Held during the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration throughout February is the annual Taste of Gullah festival, taking place outside on the grounds of the Arts Center.

The Art League of Hilton Head will once again host the exhibition De Aarts Ob We People in the Walter Greer Gallery.

In lieu of on-site crafts, the Arts Center will provide Gullah themed TI craft-kits-to-go! The kits will FES include materials, instructions and access to an online instructional video.

Producing Theater Series

Each year the Arts Center produces five shows—musicals and plays —from concept to curtain call, featuring outstanding direction, superb set design and talented actors in the Theater Series.

Presenting Series Performances

From pop to jazz to blues, classic and contemporary dance, as well as vocalists, the Great Performances Series at the Arts Center offers great performances throughout the season.

Education Programs

The Education Program offers visual and performance workshops, lectures, camps, homeschool classes, field trips and artist residencies, creating unique youth, special needs, and adult learning experiences in our four-county region.

Community Outreach Festivals

The Community Outreach Program features a number of free outdoor festivals and concerts, including the Community Christmas Tree Lighting, Youth Arts Fest and A Taste of Gullah.

Over 250,000 Education Outreach Services Provided For many students this is their first time viewing live theater, being an artist, or hearing a musician play. The Arts Center has become a community education partner to many organizations providing services, support and outreach to sites and schools throughout Beaufort County as well as surrounding counties, while making community art opportunities accessible to everyone.

Safety Procedures THE WORLD LOOKS QUITE A BIT DIFFERENT THAN IT DID A YEAR AGO. WITH THAT IN MIND, SAFETY IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF EVERYTHING WE DO: FOR OUR AUDIENCES, OUR CAST, OUR CREW AND OUR STAFF. While the curtain was down, the Arts Center staff was busy readying the building with a host of safety-oriented improvements, additions, and protocols. disinfecting fogging system. We’ve also installed hospital-grade MERV-13 air filters for optimal, clean airflow.

We are proud that Actors Equity Association (AEA) has worked diligently with us for months to craft the very plan that has allowed us to proceed with our first production since the end of February 2020 — Noises Off (Feb 2–28, 2021). This AEA approval is a strong vote of confidence for the Arts Center.

Cleaning and sanitation regiments have been enhanced throughout the Arts Center using CDC approved and EPA registered industrialstrength disinfectant, safe for all surfaces.

Extra attention is given to high-traffic areas including elevators, handrails, benches, seats, tables, restrooms and more.

Additionally, 36 hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed throughout the building.

Between performances, the Arts Center sanitizes the theater house and lobby using a safe, state-of-the-art ULF

At the time of this writing, the seating within the theater has been reduced to a government-mandated 50% occupancy, and audiences are required to wear face coverings properly above both mouth and nose, both while at the Arts Center and throughout the shows. We’ve added plexiglass at the lobby bars and the box office windows, and though you won’t see these, we have also built partitions between actors in the dressing rooms.

Family Gullah Festival Part of this year’s festival was the creation of the “Gullah Family Passport.” This is an entire package of activities for students to delve into at home with their families.

The package includes a Cultural Trail Map, which includes 16 Gullah Heritage sites, Gullah recipes from Sallie Ann Robinson, a Jonathan Green coloring sheet, and more.

FEBRUARY 22 –26, 2021 This year, the Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts will hold their 2nd Annual Family Gullah Festival, celebrating the cultural heritage of the Gullah people and their history on Hilton Head Island. It has expanded to be a week-long festival, February 22-26, and will have an abundance of activities, presentations, and more, immersing students in the rich history of Gullah, so integral to the fabric of our Lowcountry.

The event is co-sponsored by Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and the South Carolina Arts Commission. Throughout the week, there will be in-class demonstrations in music, dance, art, history, and storytelling as well as a number of online opportunities to learn about the Gullah heritage.

A host of exciting virtual offerings are slated as well, including a Blue House Museum Tour with Gullah storyteller Louise Cohen, a Zoom Family Art Night with award-winning artist Amiri Farris, and an exploration of Daufuskie Island Gullah history, culture and cuisine led by Sallie Ann Robinson.

Students at every grade level will enjoy a special in-school project and/or performance the week of the festival as well.

“The Arts Center is delighted to be cosponsoring the 2nd Annual Family Gullah Festival held by Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts,” said Arts Center’s Senior Director of Education Alana Adams.

Behind The Scenes Virtual Play Club Launched April 2020

Actors, patrons, and theatre-lovers alike met on Zoom to keep theatre alive during our live-performance hiatus. Participants got the chance to embody colorful characters during virtual script readings, then dive into a discussion about the play’s intricacies.

Over the span of four three-week sessions, the club explored Black Coffee, You Can’t Take it With You, Clybourne Park, and Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

Lantern Making Workshop 10.21.20

During this virtual workshop, participants created one-of-a kind paper lanterns than celebrate life on Hilton Head Island. From pirates and mermaids to crabs and critters of the Lowcountry, participants crafted their very own illuminated lantern sculpture for participation in the 2 nd annual Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade, this year a "Parade-in-Place," that was held November 5 –7, 2020.

Pete the Cat Virtual Field Trip 11.18.20 & 12.16.20

The Arts Center collaborated with the Center for Puppetry Arts to facilitate two virtual puppet shows along with a live Q&A featuring the creator of Pete the Cat, James Dean.

742 students and teachers attended this one-of-a-kind virtual field trip, with an additional 367 students participating in a Zoom puppet making workshop, led by our own Senior Director of Education Alana Adams.

Community Tree Lighting 11.21.20 Spirits were high for the Town's Official Tree Lighting and free community festival on the grounds of the Arts Center. We celebrated the kick off to the season with a number of youth performances, emceed by WSAV's Andrew Davis. Director of Cultural Affairs Jenn McEwen performed the official tree lighting honors!

VSA Collaborative Quilt Workshop 12.11.20 & 12.14.20

After analyzing the works of Josef Albers, the quilts of Gee’s Bend, and Faith Ringgold’s The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles, 90 students with disabilities from local elementary schools created a collaborative class quilt using tempera paint and newspaper, representing a future in which both individualism and collaboration are valued.

Voices of El Shaddai Jean Laney Folk Heritage Award

The Voices of El Shaddai, led and founded by our own Gail Ragland, was recently bestowed the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award by the S.C. General Assembly.

To celebrate this magnificent gospel choir and their cultural contributions to our area, the Arts Center filmed a full-length concert on our stage this fall for streaming on our own website, available for free this past Thanksgiving.

Look for an ovation of this inspiring and beautiful streamed performance to be re-released this February.
