Wishes for a Joyous Holiday Season FROM ME TO YOU
I
t’s a magical time at the Arts Center as the lights surrounding the Arts Center twinkle, following our communitywide Christmas Tree Lighting Festival held on November 23 th , where we collected unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items for Deep Well. We ushered in the holiday season with Santa arriving on a vintage firetruck, a new Pup Pageant Parade with our furry friends in festive attire and a new partnership with the Palmetto Animal League who brought rescue dogs to adopt. Along with our expanded Holly Day Art Market there was great food, wonderful entertainment and high spirits. And, as we ring in the New Year, we are thrilled for what will be showcased on our stage during these cooler months. From the magnificent dance of Charlotte Ballet to Jeanne Robertson, The Amazing Kreskin, Neil Simon’s Rumors and Celtic Thunder’s Emmet Cahill — all incredible talents. Also Saturday, February 8 is another of our free community festivals, “Taste of Gullah,” featuring incredible Gullah food, music, storytelling, arts and crafts and more! There’s so much more to come in 2020! I feel extremely blessed to be able to do what we do here at the Arts Center — to share these enriching events with you — our family of patrons and our visitors. As a non-profit organization, we at the Arts Center greatly value the support of those who come to our productions, presentations, educational programs and festivals all year long, and notably our dedicated board, treasured donors, wonderful volunteers, and the incredible staff who work tirelessly to make it all come together. This is my last OnCenter letter to you as President and CEO of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Although, I will be artistic consultant through June 30.
It has been much more than a privilege and honor to serve you and this region by leading this award-winning multi-arts organization these 22 years. This has been my home (ask any of the staff even as I write this letter in my office at 9:42pm). You all have been my family — the staff, board, donors, patrons and volunteers and I treasure you greatly. You have made me a better steward of the arts and this Arts Center facility. You have allowed me to produce the very best theater our resources will allow, to present performers that I hoped would appeal to all of our audience constituencies and to reach far beyond our county to share the artistic gifts you have made possible with the Lowcountry’s outlying rural counties. As a former Arts Educator, this has meant the world to me. My sincerest gratitude and good wishes to you and yours for a blessed Holiday Season and Happy New Year!

A Fun, Fresh Take on a Beloved Musical KISS ME, K ATE IS ONE OF THE MOST INFECTIOUS “BACKSTAGE” COMEDIES IN THE CANON OF BIG SONG-AND-DANCE MUSICALS. AND AS THE ARTS CENTER’S HOLIDAY PRODUCTION, THE SHOW WILL BE ONSTAGE IN ALL ITS TAP-DANCING, JAZZY, COLE PORTER GLORY DECEMBER 4–29. Notable for an ingenious book by Sam and Bella Spewack (fun fact: they were a married duo in the theater world!), the show spotlights the antics of a pair of diva ex-spouses going head-to-head in a production of a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. Even more essential to the show is the fabulous, deftly integrated Cole Porter score, with lyrics that include some of the composer's wittiest wordplay and cleverest rhymes, often played to explosive melodies that fuel several exhilarating
dance numbers. Softer Porter ballads are woven in as well, adding to the beauty of the score. Set both on and off-stage during their own production, Kiss Me, Kate revolves around the tempestuous love lives of actor-manager Fred Graham and his leading lady and ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi. Throw in Fred’s current paramour Lois Lane, her gambler boyfriend Bill — and a couple of gangsters who somehow get caught up in the show — and the stage is set for a funny and farcical battle of the sexes!

An irresistible celebration of the joy and madness of working in theatre, while a charming-but-accessible homage to the sparkling wit of Shakespeare. Cole Porter’s witty, jazz-inflected score features hit after hit with show-stopping numbers including “Another Op’nin’ Another Show,” “Always True to You in My Fashion” and the sizzling Act Two opener “Too Darn Hot.” The original production won the first-ever Tony Award for best musical and ran for more than 1,000 performances. Earlier this year, Kiss Me, Kate was revived on Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre Company, garnering four Tony Award nominations.

His vision for the show, along with that of Executive Producer Kathi Bateson, is fresh, new, and even a little sexy! That said, “it will be a show you can bring all ages to enjoy,” stated Bateson. “A perfect holiday escape for the whole family!”

A Masterful Murderous Comedy THE BRILLIANT, PROLIFIC PLAYWRIGHT NEIL SIMON ONLY WROTE ONE FARCE, RUMORS — AN UPROARIOUS, OUTRAGEOUS, DELIGHT RIFE WITH MISTAKEN IDENTITY, INNUENDO, PERIL, AND COVER-UPS GALORE! The Arts Center’s production of this first choice audience selection and Tony Awardwinner will run February 4–29, a perfect time of year for this buoyantly funny show. Four well-heeled couples have come to the upscale and elegant home of the New York Deputy Mayor Charlie Brock and his wife Myra to celebrate their 10 th wedding anniversary. The first couple to arrive discovers the host shot, his wife missing and the servants AWOL, even before completing the dinner-party preparations. The host is upstairs unwilling or unable to explain what happened. The couple panics and worries what the potential scandal would do their friend’s career — and their own. So as three other couples arrive and eventually the police, the first couple constructs the classic web of lies that will deepen and become increasingly ridiculous, especially as each couple gets drawn into the truth and joins in the ongoing deception. The well-heeled guests include the host’s lawyer, tax accountant, therapist and
fellow politician running for state senator along with their gorgeously attired wives, which serves to compound the chaos. The guests try to put the pieces together and decipher fact from fiction as they try to learn more about the curiously absent hosts. Neil Simon is a master at transforming the mundane into moments of great hilarity: a telephone call becomes a relay race of confusing and distorted messages, dinner preparations turn into a series of culinary crises and clumsy injuries, and finding the simple truth grows into the greatest hurdle of all. The Arts Center production is being directed by the multi-talented Brad dePlanche of New York City, most recently on our stage in the role of Monsieur Bouc in Murder on the Orient Express. He brings his finely-tuned comic sensibility to what will undoubtedly be a rollicking, rib-tickling night of pure unadulterated fun. Tickets will be on sale beginning Friday, DEC 27. A TASTE OF GULLAH
The Quintessential Lowcountry Festival HELD DURING THE HILTON HEAD ISLAND GULLAH CELEBRATION, WHICH SPANS THE ENTIRE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, IS THE ANNUAL TASTE OF GULLAH FESTIVAL TAKING PLACE ON THE GROUNDS OF THE ARTS CENTER. The free community-wide festival takes place from noon to 3 PM on Saturday, February 8. This signature event had its debut at the Arts Center in 2001, and the festival marks the 20 th anniversary partnership between the Arts Center, NIBCA A and the Gullah community. Festival goers will have an opportunity to experience the food, music, language and history that makes the Gullah culture so rich and beautiful. From storytelling to gospel music, dance and more, an afternoon of performances shines the spotlight on Gullah heritage. Entertainment will include performances by El Shaddai gospel choir and storytelling by both Louise Cohen and Natalie Daise. The Art League of Hilton Head will again host the exhibition "De Aarts Ob We People," initiated by the Arts Center 24 years ago, in the Walter Greer Gallery.
Traditional Gullah basketweavers Michael Smalls and Dino Badger will be on hand to craft and sell their intricate hand-woven sweetgrass baskets, "coiled so tightly they can hold water." The basket-making tradition has been passed down through generations to Smalls and Badger who will demonstrate this art. At the Gullah arts and craft stations, children can make their own keepsake while learning about the Gullah culture in a fun, hands-on way. This festival gets its name from the incredible food prepared by local Gullah cooks, and is truly the highlight of the day! Indulge in Lowcountry specialties including original island gumbo, barbecue ribs, fried fish, shrimp and grits. The barbecue is grilled on-site and smells divine, making your mouth water! An assortment of beverages will be sold as well, including beer, wine, soda and water. In addition to the Arts Center, other sponsors of the festival include both the South Carolina Arts Commission and Concours d'Elegance: Driving Young America. Mind-Reading Mentalist WITH A SHOWMAN'S FLAIR
FOR SIX DECADES, THE AMAZING KRESKIN HAS ASTONISHED AUDIENCES WORLD-WIDE, WITH HIS UNEARTHLY ABILITY TO TRANSLATE THOUGHTS, PREDICT THE FUTURE, AND SEE THE UNSEEN. He first noticed his psychic abilities at the age of nine while playing a game of “hot and cold” at his grandmother’s house. After his brother had hidden a penny for Kreskin to find, instead of asking even once if he was “getting warmer” or “colder,” Kreskin immediately climbed on top of a chair, reached behind a curtain rod, and found the penny without the help of a single clue. AN INTERVIEW WITH GAIL RAGLAND
The Voices of El Shaddai AS OF APRIL OF 2020, GAIL RAGLAND WILL HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE ARTS CENTER FAMILY FOR TWENTY YEARS. WE ASKED HER TO SHARE THE STORY OF THIS BELOVED LOWCOUNTRY SINGING GROUP. Gail is the Musical Director and Manager of The Voices of El Shaddai, and recounted the story of the formation of the group. It all began when she started a community choir on Hilton Head Island. Meanwhile, there was another gospel choir in Bluffton, under the direction of Jim Joiner. “These two groups combined forces to become what is now The Voices of El Shaddai (which is Hebrew for “God Almighty”),” she explained. Since the early 1990s, the group has become synonymous with preserving and celebrating the Gullah culture and history of the Lowcountry by performing spirituals, gospel music and original compositions. The choir rehearses under Choral Director Eddie Days every Friday night at the historic Queen Chapel AME Church, which celebrated its 150-year anniversary in 2015. “We have three generations of
Gullah descendants singing with us now and many of the members are Native Islanders,” adds Gail. “The choir members are a good representation of churches on Hilton Head and Bluffton and continue to sing regularly at their respective churches and community events.” In March of 2018, The Voices of El Shaddai donned their colorful African garb and performed at the "Gullah Experience" Celebration, part of Together SC’s Nonprofit Summit. Hundreds of professionals within the nonprofit sector gathered on Hilton Head Island, designated as part of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, to enjoy the uplifting program. “We’re very close-knit. Many of the original members still make up a large part of the core group. We’ve performed at private events at the Sheldon Ruins, Palmetto Bluff and even the 18 th hole at Harbour Town Golf Links. We’ve been blessed that we don’t have to market our group; our bookings come from word of mouth.” The group has also recorded several CDs, one of which was recorded at Arts Center. The Voices of El Shaddai will once again return to the stage for the Taste of Gullah celebration, on the Arts Center grounds, Saturday, February 8, noon-3pm.

Producing Theater Series
Each year the Arts Center produces five shows—musicals and plays —from concept to curtain call, featuring outstanding direction, superb set design and talented actors in the Theater Series.
Presenting Series Performances
From pop to jazz to blues, classic and contemporary dance, as well as vocalists, the Great Performances Series at the Arts Center offers great performances throughout the season.
Education Programs
The Education Program offers visual and performance workshops, lectures, camps, homeschool classes, field trips and artist residencies, creating unique youth, special needs, and adult learning experiences in our four-county region.
Community Outreach Festivals
The Community Outreach Program features a number of free outdoor festivals and concerts, including the Community Christmas Tree Lighting, Youth Arts Fest and A Taste of Gullah.

Over 250,000 Education Outreach Services Provided For many students this is their first time viewing live theater, being an artist, or hearing a musician play. The Arts Center has become a community education partner to many organizations providing services, support and outreach to sites and schools throughout Beaufort County as well as surrounding counties, while making community art opportunities accessible to everyone.

The 2019-20 season kicked off on opening night of Murder on the Orient Express, with a pre-show champagne and dessert donor reception in the Walter Greer Gallery. Remarks were made by CEO/President Kathi Bateson about the exciting, new theater and presenting shows ahead, and Board Chair Bob Lee spoke about talents of the Arts Center team. The 16 th annual golf and tennis tournament at beautiful Wexford, sponsored by Mortgage Network, was an outstanding success on a picture-perfect fall day! Lantern Workshops 8.26.19 & 10.16.19
During this workshop at the Arts Center, participants created one-of-a kind paper lanterns that celebrate life on Hilton Head Island. From pirates and mermaids to crabs and critters of the Lowcountry participants crafted their very own illuminated lantern sculpture for participation in the inaugural Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade that was held on South Forest Beach, November 9.

Michelin Junior Design Challenge 10.14.19
In partnership with the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival, Michelin hosted its 3 rd Annual Junior Challenge Design Contest in which they challenged Beaufort County high school students to produce drawings and an interpretation of what transportation of the future could look like. Winning students each received a $ 500 college scholarship. The Arts Center curated the exhibit and displayed the winning entries after opening weekend at the Concours d’Elegance.
Patron Circle Appreciation Reception 11.8.19
The elegant Patron Circle Appreciation Reception was held in the Wood Community Room and the Black Box, both of which were transformed into a patriotic party in the theme of the night’s performance of Capitol Steps. Guests enjoyed lavish hors d’ouevres from Serg Catering and delicious wines provided by Hilton Head Wine & Spirits. The reception was once again sponsored by Merrill Lynch’s RJC Wealth Management Group. Guests then got to revel in the hilarity of Capitol Steps on the main stage.
