PRESIDENT ' S LE T TER
A Warm
Island Welcome to All of You!
We have just announced our 2019/20 Theater Season and are delighted to be producing five sensational pieces: Murder on the Orient Express, Kiss Me Kate, Rumors, Kinky Boots, and Footloose. For detailed show descriptions, read the article on page 26. We’re excited to welcome back renowned comedian Henry Cho for two shows on Monday, July 15 at 5 and 8pm. He is a favorite of ours, loved for his clean, clever comedy.
It’s a fabulous time to be on Hilton Head Island, when the area is abuzz with visiting families and friends. We here at the Arts Center are always overjoyed to welcome residents, newcomers, and annual visitors to our award-winning theater. There’s so much happening at the Arts Center all year long, but summer — especially — means our building is filled with the happy sounds of children at our amazing summer camps! On the third floor in our Disney Art Studio, where the focus is on the visual arts and STEAM camps, while the Black Box studio is home to several high-energy theater camps. More information on these are found on our website at artshhi.com/workshops. Meanwhile, this summer concludes our 23rd year and over these two-plus decades, we’ve had stellar talent and staff working together to put Broadway-caliber productions on our stage, and it shows! We hope you love Legally Blonde and will spread the word!
Make plans now to see Rebel, Rebel, celebrating the music and life of David Bowie, August 15 & 16. Then on Labor Day weekend, August 30 – September 1, we will have Chicago Experience, featuring Kenny Cetera, original band member of Chicago and Peter Cetera’s brother. We are overjoyed that you’re spending a couple of hours here to experience one of our region’s greatest cultural treasures… the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Once you return home, you don’t have to “leave the island” — please frequent our website at artshhi.com to remain current with our latest productions, programs and special events. You may discover a show or event you’d like to plan a vacation around! The Arts Center proudly welcomed over 62,000 participants and patrons last year, and we’re happy to count you among those who visited us this season. We hope to welcome you back to our Island, and our Arts Center, again soon.

THE ATER SERIES
Legally Blonde
You'll Be Cheering "Elle Yeah!"
Don’t judge a blonde by its cover! The summer production of Legally Blonde at the Arts Center June 26 – August 4, demonstrates “girl power” in the most fun, most pink way possible! The tale of popular sorority president Elle Woods and her unlikely foray into Harvard Law School actually has both substance and cheek. Directed to amusing impact by Todd Underwood of New York City, Legally Blonde also embraces the retroplot about a designer-obsessed girl who wants nothing more in life than a boy. But, the plot unfolds to show Elle coming into the realization that she actually wants far more than a boy. Despite early indications to the contrary, Elle is adept at more than the perfect "bend-and-snap." The mega-hit musical, birthed from composer-lyricists Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and book writer Heather Hach and nominated for seven Tony awards, starts with the high energy of sorority sisters during rush week with the fabulous opening number “Omigod You Guys.” But, soon to be UCLA graduate and all-around Malibu girl Elle Woods is unexpectedly dumped by her boyfriend Warner because he thinks he needs someone more serious as he goes off to Harvard Law. So, Elle decides to get into Harvard Law too ("Like, it's hard?") to show Warner just how serious she can be. But along the way she finds she's up to any challenge, even Harvard, without changing who she is.
Using her smarts and ingenuity, Elle takes Harvard by storm, where she meets unlikely allies, challenges sexism and stereotypes and learns a lot about herself in the process. Legally Blonde is a blockbuster musical in the truest sense. It’s not a play with a couple of songs. There’s non-stop singing and dancing (even jump roping), followng the same story arc as the eponymous film — but better — with Elle Woods transforming from a fun-seeking college girl into a confident and independent woman with a purpose. Moms – bring your daughters to this! No matter your age or your gender, you’ll TOTES love Legally Blonde!
High Energy! - New York Times Tickets for Preview performances June 26-27 are $ 40 for adults and $ 27 for children ages 5-15. Regular performances June 28 — August 4 are $ 50 for adults and $ 37 for children ages 5-15. Get yours today at artshhi.com or by calling 843.842.ARTS 2787.
Delightful and Empowering for the Next Generation. - Chicago Parent After some LSAT cramming and an “essay” involving an over-the-top cheer routine, Elle too is admitted to Harvard Law, bringing along her pink-dominated wardrobe and her trusty canine sidekick Bruiser.

Comedian Henry Cho! Back by Popular Demand
Henry Cho proves that you can be funny while keeping it clean. Cho will bring his witty brand of humor, perfect for the whole family, to the Arts Center on Monday, July 15 for two shows at 5 and 8 PM. Cho has risen to the top of his profession while keeping his comedy so clean and versatile he can headline in Vegas one week, and tour with Michael W. Smith the next. After having seen Henry Cho perform, a fan posted, “I laughed so hard my chest muscles hurt the next day.” Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, with parents from Korea, Cho went into standup comedy in 1986. He often recounts his childhood experiences as an Asian American in the South through comedy. "I'm an Asian with a Southern accent,"
remarks Cho, "To a lot of people, that right there is funny." Cho got into stand-up by taking a chance on comedy in college. It all started on a Monday night in his hometown when he entered a statewide competition sponsored by Showtime. Cho remembers, "I thought it would be comprised of guys like me — first timers. But it was full of working comedians. I told my pals I would go up, try not to humiliate us and then I'd forget it.” Instead what he got was a standing ovation and the beginning of a career. He started working on a Wednesday, dropped out of college on Friday, and for more than 30 years, Cho has crisscrossed the country with his standup act.
I'm an Asian with a Southern accent. To a lot of people, that right there is funny. - Henry Cho His TV credits include The Tonight Show, The Late, Late, Show and NBC’s Young Comedians Special. He hosted Friday Night Videos, has had guest roles on sitcoms and in several films, and he is a regular performer at the Grand Ole Opry. Cho has a Comedy Central special, a CD/DVD available on Amazon and can be heard on Sirius XM and Blue Collar Radio. From the stories of his southern childhood to bantering with the crowd, Henry Cho keeps the audience laughing all night long. Tickets are $ 46. Reserve your seats now by calling 843.842. Rock out with the
Music of David Bowie It’s the ultimate journey through the extraordinary life and electrifying sounds of David Bowie. Rebel, Rebel — A Tribute to David Bowie comes to the Arts Center for two performances on August 15 and 16. Like the man it honors, it’s going to be out of this world!
energy of Bowie’s greatest characters Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, and Iconic Bowie, featuring three brilliant performers. The accomplished band members have been working in the music industry for many years, their talent allowing them to fully inhabit Bowie’s diverse and complex songs.
Direct from New York City, this must-see event will leave you feeling like you have just watched David Bowie live in concert. Truly a theatrical concert experience, the show hones in on the essence of some of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written including “Changes,” “Heroes,” “Space Oddity,” “Starman,” and “Fame.”
'Rebel, Rebel' resurrects David Bowie's legendary sound true to form.
Lead singer Peter Quinn always had his voice compared to Bowie’s. He says, “I released an album of original material and it was instantly compared to Bowie. It was something I had been told from the time I recorded my first demo, so when I was looking for a new project, a Bowie tribute was the obvious direction.” The playlist for this show is built on Bowie's most loved and enduring songs, and the band has worked hard to bring the vintage sound and look to the show, which instantly transports audiences to the various personas of David Bowie. Backed by a full rock band, this chameleon performance also captures the otherworldly
- Chicago Tribune
The band faithfully recreates the most popular songs from Bowie’s extensive catalog. Released in 1974 as a single from the album Diamond Dogs, the song "Rebel Rebel" was cited as Bowie’s most-covered track and has been described as his farewell to the glam rock movement that he helped pioneer. Experience the legendary music that is uniquely Bowie as you journey through space and time with the Starman! Tickets are $ 51 and may be purchased at artshhi.com or by calling 843.842.ARTS 2787.

Kenny Cetera and the...
Chicago Experience For many of us, the music of the legendary band Chicago is the soundtrack to our lives. This summer, we’re so excited to present Kenny Cetera’s “Chicago Experience,” on the Arts Center stage for three performances Labor Day Weekend: August 30 – September 1. Led by Peter Cetera’s younger brother, Kenny, the band flawlessly performs Chicago’s greatest hits. The younger Cetera was hired as a vocalist on Chicago 17, which broke all previous sales records for the band and is still Chicago’s best-selling album. Recently celebrating its 35 th anniversary, Chicago 17, certified six-time platinum, sent the singles “Hard Habit to Break” and “You’re the Inspiration” to the top of the charts. Kenny's voice has a similar timbre as his brother Peter, and he nails the vocals as they present Chicago’s songs from their most relevant and creative years of original music, '68 through '85. Kenny also toured and recorded with Chicago, and
it shows. He’s a fantastic front man for the band, interacting with the audience, singing, joking, playing the drums and dancing around the stage during a great night of music.
They sound better live in concert than Chicago themselves!
- Metropolis Theater Review Kenny’s lead vocals are backed by seven world-class musicians creating a fundamental blend of a genuine Cetera voice on brass-rock classics. The band includes a seasoned rhythm section, excellent lead guitar, impeccable horn arrangements (trombone, sax, trumpet), and lush keyboard arrangements, all resulting in an authentic Chicago experience. Whether they are belting out hits while the rhythm section drives the tempo and the horns are blaring, or they are singing tunes stripped down to their acoustic essence, the Chicago Experience doesn’t sound or feel like a “tribute” band. It’s far more authentic. Don’t miss out on an evening of vocal harmonies and spot-on musical arrangements of treasured Chicago hits and pop ballads. Tickets are $ 51 and may be purchased online at artshhi.com or by calling 843.842.ARTS 2787.

THE ATER SERIES
In winter, we bring the lightness and fun of a clever comedy with Neil Simon’s Rumors (February 4-23). In this classical farce, four couples arrive at the 10th anniversary celebration party for New York's deputy mayor and his wife, only to find the mayor wounded in bed and the wife missing. The madcap fun is set in Palisades at a dinner party that goes topsy-turvy from beginning to end. During its Broadway run, the show received a Tony nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Drama Desk nomination. Called “straight up funny” and the “perfect antidote to reality,” Rumors is one of Simon’s most celebrated comedies.
Then summer is, of course, the time to cut loose! Based on the successful film, and one of your top picks for a musical, we’re proud to be producing Footloose! The highenergy, hit-packed musical was nominated for 4 Tony Awards and 4 Grammys. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her jealous boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. This exuberant show explodes with music, romance and dance set to the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated Top 40 score. We hope you’re as excited about the new 2019/20 season as we are! At this time, the only way to secure tickets to these shows is with a season subscription. See the subscription choices below, including flex packages. To subscribe now to this phenomenal line-up, call 843.842.ARTS 2787 or visit artshhi.com/subscriptions.
For spring, we’re proud to produce the regional premiere of Kinky Boots (April 29 – May 24). This blockbuster musical tells the story of Charlie Price who has inherited a shoe factory from his father, and is thinking “what next?!” But Charlie’s fate soon intertwines with cabaret performer and drag queen Lola to produce a line of specially-engineered high-heeled boots with hopes of saving the business. In the process, Charlie and Lola discover they are not so different after all. With music by Cyndi Lauper, the production earned a season-high 13 nominations and 6 Tony wins, including Best Musical and Best Score. The musical's cast album premiered at number one on the Billboard Cast Albums Chart. In 2016, it also won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical. The show, with high spirits and even higher heels, will leave you cheering!

Board Profile
Steve Alfred
A Passion for Arts... Passion for Community
How apropos that the subject of our summer Board Profile is himself a graduate of Harvard Law! Legally Blonde's Elle Woods would most definitely approve! Steve Alfred, who joined the Arts Center Board of Trustees in September 2018, not only hails from Harvard Law but from Princeton University (undergrad) as well. Double the ivy! Steve practiced law in Cleveland for over 38 years, specializing in federal tax and finance transactions, all the while staying active in community matters. So much so, in fact, that following an eight year stint as Councilman, Steve was Mayor of Shaker Heights, Ohio for eight years. Like many who make the southward trek to our sunnier skies from the Buckeye State, Steve and his equally-active wife Dr. Rita Hungate (who decided to get her medical degree at age 40) began vacationing on Hilton Head Island in the late 1960s. Once the Alfreds moved to Atlanta in '97, island jaunts became more frequent, as did their visits to the Arts Center. In 2002, they bought a second home here. They've been season subscribers at the Arts Center for the past five years, since becoming permanent residents, and know first-hand what the organization means to the community. "The presence of the Arts Center was one of the key reasons we chose Hilton Head Island as a retirement location," Steve said. "The Arts Center is one of the best and most prominent arts organizations in the state of South Carolina, providing outstanding theatrical performances and extraordinary arts outreach programs for children throughout Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton Counties. It is not only a gem for residents, but is also a major
attraction for both potential home buyers and tourists coming to Hilton Head Island." The Alfreds attend almost all the Behind the Scenes, OnStage, and new cast Meet and Greets available to Heritage Circle donors. Granddaughters Molly and Maggie appeared in Mamma Mia! two summers ago and attended summer Arts Center camps, so it's become a family affair. Steve is entrenched in this his Lowcountry home, with both involvement and commitment to improvements. For four years, he was president of the Kickin' Asphalt Bicycle Club, and was highly involved in the Bicycle Advisory Committee with the Town since 2011. A related area of keen interest to Steve was the surging popularity of biking among visitors, which hatched one of his ideas. He created and chaired the Hilton Head Island Biking Ambassador Program. Since its inception six years ago, the program has assisted hundreds of cyclists every year by providing directions, maps, and safety tips. During the peak spring and summer seasons, volunteer "biking ambassadors" conduct regular patrols in several key areas on the island, welcoming and assisting visitors. Steve's also served on Sea Pines' CSA Safety & Security Committee and has been the Chair of its subcommittee on Leisure Trail Safety Improvements for several years. "We are overjoyed to now have Steve as part of our Board of Trustees," said CEO/President of the Arts Center Kathi Bateson. "His intellect, enthusiasm, and dedication are profound and we are a far better place for his involvement here." ONCENTER SUMMER 2019

Arts Center's CEO Kathleen P. Bateson Receives
Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award 2019 We couldn’t be more proud of Kathleen Bateson, CEO/ President of the Arts Center, for receiving the acclaimed 2019 S.C. Arts Commission’s 2019 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts in the Individual category, which is “open to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and statewide impact through their leadership, support, and advancement of the arts.” The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, as an organization, is a 2006 past Verner award recipient. Kathi’s list of achievements is vast. She is past president of the S.C. Arts Alliance board, and served as the first chair of the Arts & Cultural Council of Hilton Head. She currently serves as Chair of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry’s Women in Philanthropy. In addition, effective July 1, Kathi will sit on the board of the S.C. Arts Foundation, which pursues creative ways to help citizens and the business community contribute to a thriving arts community across the state. “It is an honor and privilege to recognize individuals and organizations who live out the service, commitment and passion that help the arts thrive in South Carolina,” S.C. Arts Commission Chairman Henry Horowitz said. “Each of the Verner
Award recipients makes a tremendous contribution not just locally, but they are honored for broad impact on the state’s arts community and beyond. These are outstanding ambassadors for our state." A diverse committee, appointed by the S.C. Arts Commission Board of Directors and drawn from members of the South Carolina community at large, reviews all nominations and, after a rigorous process and a series of panel meetings produces a recommendation for each category to the board for final approval. The 2019 Verner Awards were presented at South Carolina Arts Awards Day on Wednesday, May 1 in a morning ceremony at the USC Alumni Center in Columbia, with many of the Arts Center staff and trustees in attendance. For more information about the Verner Awards, please visit artshhi.com.
