WELCOME TO THE ARTS CENTER'S 24TH
Sensational Season! We are excited to once again offer the region an award-winning line-up of productions! Your number one selection for a play was Murder on the Orient Express, which kicks off the season, followed by Kiss Me, Kate during the holidays, with the hilarious Neil Simon play Rumors this winter, then the Tony Award-winning smash hit Kinky Boots in spring and our summertime dance party of a musical, Footloose! We’ll also be bringing you one of our best Great Performances series ever, with a wide array of one-, two-, and three-night presenting artists. The Arts Center will be bringing celebrity comedy, acclaimed dance, and musical artists that will excite you. This year, we even have a mentalist/ mind-reader, the Amazing Kreskin!
FALL IS SUCH AN EXCITING TIME FOR US, AND AT THE TOP OF THE LIST IS THE BEGINNING OF OUR BRAND NEW 24TH SEASON! We have so much gratitude for your patronage of not only our theatre performances and presenting shows, but for our year-round education and outreach programs. All ages come through the Arts Center doors, and we’re always delighted when your children (and grandchildren) join us for our camps and workshops, master classes and field trips. Through the end of our 2018–19 fiscal year, we provided over 270,000 education services, for an average of nearly 12,000 a year. Last year, we also staged 167 performances and events – that’s nearly one every other day, all year long. And we welcomed over 62,000 attendees this past year with a 58% visitorship (visitors from out of town).
This fall, we invite you to join us for the 16 th Annual Mortgage Network Golf & Tennis Tournament at Wexford, Monday, October 28. And, mark your calendars for the gala event of the spring season: Bourbon & Bubbles to be held March 21, 2020! We are delighted to host free community festivals as well: The Town’s Official Tree Lighting (November 23), Taste of Gullah Festival (February 8) and our Youth ArtsFest (March 7), which is always partnered with the Island School Council of the Arts’ amazing Rising Stars talent competition. As always, we look forward to hosting a number of community organizations at the Arts Center this year including the Hilton Head Dance Theatre, Island School Council for the Arts, and Long Cove Club, just to name a few. Thanks to you — our patrons and our partners — the Arts Center continues to be a vital part of this thriving cultural area. So it is with heartfelt appreciation that I welcome you to the Arts Center’s 24 th Season!

In winter, we bring the lightness and fun of a clever comedy with Neil Simon’s Rumors (FEB 4 – 23). In this classical farce, four couples arrive at the 10th anniversary celebration party for New York 's deputy mayor and his wife, only to find him wounded in bed and the wife missing. Suspenseful Season Opener WE’RE THRILLED TO KICK OFF OUR 2019-2020 THEATER SERIES WITH SUSPENSE, DRAMA, AND HIGH STAKES, ALL ABOARD A LUXURIOUS LOCOMOTIVE! You, our audience, selected Murder on the Orient Express as your favorite play you’d like to see this season, based on our 2019 People’s Choice survey. We can think of no better way to open this year of Tony Award-winning productions than with this Agatha Christie whodunit. The story unfolds on the lavish Orient Express traversing through Europe, when just after midnight a snowdrift stops the locomotive in its tracks. The train is surprisingly full for this time of the year, but by morning it is one passenger less. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed eight times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, enter the brilliant sleuth — Christie’s most ubiquitous recurring creation — the mustachioed Belgian Detective Hercules Poirot, the world-famous crime investigator with a knack for solving crimes with great precision, instinctual smarts, and meticulous accuracy. Turning Politics into Punchlines! WHEN POLITICAL OPINIONS RUN HIGH, THE CAPITOL STEPS PROVIDES THE COMIC RELIEF WE ALL CRAVE – DARE WE SAY — NEED! This multi-award winning comedy troupe is back by popular demand. With fresh new skits, songs, and spoofs from their latest album, The Lying Kings, this performance is sure to give you an exhilarating night of non-stop laughter! No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet The Capitol Steps will tackle both ends of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. And with the 2020 presidential candidates kicking their campaigns into full gear, there is certainly no shortage of material from which to pull. Over 30 years ago “the Steps” began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. When Reagan was president, the Steps co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become politicians, then politicians could become entertainers! In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!") in order to create a uniquely witty show, blending together stand-up and songs, while poking fun at the political headlines we are all too familiar with. Since they began, The Capitol Steps has recorded over 35 albums — or as they like to say, “More than the constitution has amendments.” They have also been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and
can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio (NPR) stations nationwide during their holiday radio specials. Although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Most cast members have worked on Capitol Hill; some for Democrats, some for Republicans, and others for politicians who firmly straddle the fence.
This side-splitting show will be on the Arts Center stage November 8–10, at 8pm on Friday, 4pm and 8pm on Saturday, and 2pm on Sunday. Since ticket sales began in August, many excited patrons have already snagged their seats, so don’t miss the chance to enjoy the brilliantly hilarious group that left Larry King saying, “They’re the best. Celebrating Arts, Culture & History CRESCENDO, THE THIRD ANNUAL ARTS, CULTURE AND HISTORY CELEBRATION, SPONSORED BY THE ARTS & CULTURAL COUNCIL OF HILTON HEAD (ACCHH), WILL BE HELD THIS FALL, OCTOBER 10 – NOVEMBER 15.
The Crescendo Opening festivities, featuring live entertainment, ticket giveaways, exhibitions and refreshments, will take place from 5 – 7 pm on Thursday, October 10 at the Shelter Cove Community Park. Crescendo launches during National Arts and Humanities month, and is designed to spotlight the extensive arts, culture and history organizations, individual artists, performers, and authors residing and working in the Hilton Head area. According to ACCHH Chair Patti Maurer, “Arts and cultural patrons of all ages are invited to help celebrate this important community month-long event by attending or participating in any of the myriad of vibrant and diverse cultural programs offered, many free or reasonably priced.” This year’s Crescendo celebration features more than 90 unique arts and cultural programs, concerts, theatrical productions, museum and gallery exhibits, lectures, poetry readings, dance performances, historical tours, hands-on arts experiences, and educational offerings. “With our third annual celebration of Crescendo, we’ve added even more engaging events to the calendar, such as the lantern parade,” said Natalie Hefter, Crescendo

C O M M U N I T Y E V EN T S Chair. “We hope that everyone will come out and support the incredible arts, culture and history organizations that we have here.” The inaugural Hilton Head Lantern Parade, being created by Featured Artist Chantelle Rytter, will be held on November 9. Chantelle, who is a well-known community parade artist, said, “I am excited to be working with Hilton Head Island to “illuminate” life here with a first-ever lantern parade on the beach. Seeing the Island’s community illustrated in volumes of light, walking together on the shoreline, will be a spectacular joy.” Leading up to the parade, several community lantern design workshops are being held, including two at the Arts Center, one held on August 21, and another on October 16. In addition, the Arts Center
is also sponsoring an after-school club at their adopted school, Hilton Head Island School for Creative Arts, to assist the school with their lantern projects. Lineup for the parade begins at 6pm at the Alder Lane Beach Access. At 7 pm, the parade will travel north along South Forest Beach up to Coligny Beach Park. The official after-party will be hosted at the Tiki Hut by the parade’s hotel partner, Beach House Resort. Parking is free at the Coligny Beach area with 200+ spaces. The Breeze Trolley will then shuttle paradegoers and participants to the starting point, with the parade ending near the parking area for easy access, coming and going. Tree Lighting Celebration! ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23 THE ARTS CENTER HOSTS THE COMMUNITY TREE LIGHTING, THE TOWN’S OFFICIAL TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATION AND THE ISLAND’S KICK-OFF TO THE HOLIDAY SEASON. Come celebrate the season with a fabulous, festive day on the Arts Center grounds, 3:30 – 5:30 pm , culminating at dusk with the flipping of the big switch to illuminate the tree with more than 3,000 twinkling lights! The afternoon will feature performances by local school groups, crafts for kids, and visits with Santa, Mrs. Claus and of course, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. You’ll also get a sneak peek of our next show, with a performance by the cast of the Arts Center’s holiday musical Kiss Me, Kate. The very-merry festival also includes delicious refreshments and some prize giveaways as well!

A new addition to the celebration this year is the Pup Parade! Bring your furry canine friend dressed in his or her seasonal best to walk the outdoor stage as part of the parade. Palmetto Animal League will be on hand with several adoptable pups, ready to find their “furever” home just in time for the holidays! The tree lighting is also a fundraiser for Deep Well, a community charity which has been helping islanders for over 40 years. For a small donation to Deep Well, guests will be able to make a Christmas tree ornament. And to really get into the spirit of the season, please consider supporting Deep Well by dropping off nonperishable food items or unwrapped toys. The real life pup, ChaCha Zizzi, was found and saved by PAL, gaining a forever home with his mom Jill Zizzi. In addition to PAL’s Community Clinic, which offers wellness exams, vaccines, spay/ neuter and other services at affordable prices, the popular organization supports

Dogs and cats in particular have a way of capturing the hearts of mortals who fall hopelessly in love and want to take them home. And that is exactly what the animal rescue organization Palmetto Animal League (PAL) makes possible through its no-kill sheltering, creative adoption incentives, life-saving programs and strategies. President Amy Campanini officially started her career with PAL in January of 2006. Prior to that, she was an enthusiastic volunteer there - raising funds, fostering and helping to build the organization into a strong non-profit. “We celebrate our 10th anniversary this year. That means over 7,500 cats and dogs have been rescued, and we could not be doing this without the support of our animalloving community,” says Campanini. “Our

the adopter. Its highly trained staff works hard to keep owners and their pets together through problem-solving and manages a network of foster families caring for pets too young to be adopted or in need of medical or behavioral rehab. PAL values its volunteers and supporters who cohesively make rescue a reality through adopting, fostering, and donating, as well as volunteering and frequenting the PAL Thrift Store in Bluffton’s Sheridan Park. “We use the proceeds to rescue more animals and place them in loving homes. All of our pets receive a clean bill of health, helping them move through the adoption process quickly and successfully,” explains Campanini. “Joy is everywhere at PAL! Some of the best moments for me are when I see a really helpless animal bounce back from
PROFILES starvation, illness or fear. When they turn that corner, I know everything is going to be ok. When I need joy - I find kittens!” says Campanini with a smile. “As we enter this next chapter, we are going to fight even harder to give homeless animals a voice and a second chance

Mark has spent his career as a hugely successful liquor distributor in Indiana, so when the idea for our Spring 2019 gala event, the Bourbon Ball, came up, Mark was a natural fit and stepped up to chair with his wife, Alora. Mark’s leadership proved invaluable, garnering exciting live auction items, in addition to reaching out to the topname bourbon distilleries, which agreed to participate in the spring fundraiser with a tented area for tastings.
The event was so well-received that we’ve created a spin-off: Bourbon & Bubbles, Saturday, March 21, 2020! Best of all, the McAlisters are at the helm once again, ready to chair this event, and already working diligently to make it another successful soiree! The McAlisters have been long-time attendees at the Arts Center. They love theater, jazz and of course the Indy 500. The couple lives in Long Cove on Hilton Head, and also in Indianapolis, and they are always on the go. CEO/President Kathi Bateson stated, “As a non-profit, we depend on our volunteers and their leadership to help us fulfill our mission here. And isn’t the Arts Center so fortunate that Mark and Alora stepped up to lead the inaugural bourbon event and are returning to chair Bourbon & Bubbles next March!” Thank you again, Mark & Alora, for your incredible volunteer service to the Arts Center! Producing Theater Series
Each year the Arts Center produces five shows—musicals and plays —from concept to curtain call, featuring outstanding direction, superb set design and talented actors in the Theater Series.
Presenting Series Performances
From pop to jazz to blues, classic and contemporary dance, as well as vocalists, the Great Performances Series at the Arts Center offers great performances throughout the season.
Education Programs
The Education Program offers visual and performance workshops, lectures, camps, homeschool classes, field trips and artist residencies, creating unique youth, special needs, and adult learning experiences in our four-county region.
Community Outreach Festivals
The Community Outreach Program features a number of free outdoor festivals and concerts, including the Community Christmas Tree Lighting, Youth Arts Fest and A Taste of Gullah.

Summer Camps 2019 6.10.19 –8.9.19
Arts Center hosted a jam-packed summer of visual and performing arts camps! Designed for ages 6–16, each week-long camp provided aspiring young artist an opportunity to work with professionals in the arts in our award-winning producing theater. We kicked off the summer camp season in June with STEAM Tinker Camp, where students learned about engineering by building cardboard Alexander Calder-style stabiles, chemistry through cyanotypes, magnetism and measurements with the magnetic slime challenge, and created an illuminated Starry Night painting using circuits. During a second session, campers learned about simple machines while creating pendulum paintings, parallel circuits with LED illuminated “circuit bug” sculptures, and the science behind shadows with articulated shadow puppets! Mixed Up Masterpieces provided budding artists the opportunity to learn from Debi West, creating one-of-a-kind artworks inspired from art throughout history. Meanwhile, concurrent sessions were held of the popular Take the Stage! Camps. These camps were instructed by members of the cast of Legally Blonde, who worked with the youngsters on developing their talents in music, dance, and drama. Later in the summer, the fun continued with Kids N' Clay camp, learning to use ceramic studio equipment such as a slab roller and clay extruder as they crafted their clay creations. New this summer, was a Legally Blonde Dance and Drama Camp. Students worked with cast members including our very own “Elle” from Legally Blonde, Tristen Buettel, as they learned scenes, songs, and choreography from the popular show. Finally, Theatre Camp offered young thespians an outlet to express themselves. Students wrote their very own original play and learned how to flip classic scripts upside down, changing characters, setting, and plot, to create their own version of these popular tales.
