PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Welcome to the Arts Center’s 26th Season! What a year it’s been! Life has seemed to evolve on a daily basis for all of us at the Arts Center during these past months … and probably for you personally as well. I had hoped we might be able to retire the word “pivot” from our vocabularies, but that remains to be seen! Change, shifts, and pivots aside, let me say a profound “thank you” to all of you. We have so much gratitude for your patronage of not only our theatre performances and presenting shows, but for our year-round education and outreach programs. More than ever, we saw our patrons rally around the Arts Center during these crazy past months and it has buoyed us more than you know. It is with that sense of heartfelt appreciation that I welcome you to the Arts Center’s 26th Season. We are thrilled to once again offer the region an award-winning line-up of productions! It’s just one sensational show after another: Kinky Boots, Elf, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, In the Heights, and Rock of Ages. Many of you have commented that this might be our best season yet! We humbly agree, and are excited to produce five, fresh shows never before seen on the Arts Center stage. Of course, we are also bringing you a dynamic, well-rounded “Great Performances” series as well, with a host of one-, two-, and three-night presenting artists ready to dazzle, amuse, and delight! The Arts Center will be presenting award-winning dance, celebrity comedy, and music that spans Gullah to rock.

Mark your calendars for an all-new themed, soiree of the spring season: An Epic 80s Party to be held March 18, 2022. In a tongue-in-cheek nod to the decade, we briefly considered naming the event The Big Hair Ball but duly reconsidered! Please save the date for what will certainly be a totally awesome party (costumes encouraged)! In closing, let me state emphatically that safety is a top priority at the Arts Center: for our audiences, our staff, our volunteers, and our artists. With that in mind, we thank you for masking up while here, regardless of vaccination status. This helps keep our doors open and our community safe. Thanks to you, our patrons, and our community partners, the Arts Center continues to be a vital part of this thriving cultural area. We greatly appreciate every one of you. See you at the theater!

Kinky Boots

THE SHOW WITH HIGH SPIRITS AND EVEN HIGHER HEELS

Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Kinky Boots features a joyous, Tony-winning score by Cyndi Lauper and a hilarious, uplifting book by four-time Tony winner, Harvey Fierstein. The musical is based on the eponymous film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, and is based on true events. The long-running Broadway production of Kinky Boots closed in 2019, so the Arts Center was head-over-stilettos to obtain the rights to this fresh, fabulous show.

􀋃 􀋃 􀋃 􀋃 􀋃

“IRRESISTIBLE” – Time Out New York Igniting the story is Lauper’s bright, catchy music, with inspiration taken from her 80’s era. It’s easy to see why she was the first solo woman to win the Tony Award for Best Original Score for this show. With a selection of upbeat numbers including the brilliant ‘Everybody Say Yeah’ to heartfelt power ballads such as ‘Hold Me in Your Heart,’ there is a lively mix of tempo throughout. Featuring larger-than life characters and an uplifting story of ingenuity and open minds, Kinky Boots is an unusual hybrid: a feel-good musical with depth. Centering the action is Charlie Price (Christopher Behmke) the fifth-generation owner of Price Shoes. Trying to live up to his father's legacy and save his family business, Charlie needs a good strong dose of inspiration. He finds just that when he encounters Lola (Clyde Voce), a London drag

queen. On her way to work, Lola’s heel breaks, Charlie gets an idea and we get a chance to see two remarkable men pit their wits and skill against the status quo. Charlie discovers Lola and her chorus of strapping drag queens, the Angels, are in need of sleek feminine footwear that supports their stature. Lola and Charlie join forces to design and engineer a sturdy but sexy stiletto boot. Charlie hopes to fill a niche in the business and save the factory at the same time. As it turns out, Lola is the one person who can help Charlie become the man that he is meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible ... and discover that, when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world. Directed by NYC’s Evan Pappas (Sister Act, The Color Purple) and choreographed by Todd Underwood (Legally Blonde [director, choreographer] and The Color Purple [choreographer]).

Preview performances, Sep 28-30, are $56/adult and $50/child (recommended for ages 13+) and regular performances, Oct 1-31, are $61/adult and $55/child. For tickets, visit artshhi.com or call (843) 842-ARTS 2787.

THEATER SERIES

Announcing the Arts Center's 2021/22 Season! AWARD-WINNING • MODERN • MAGICAL

To say we are excited about our upcoming 2021/22 Theater Season would be an understatement. This year's incredible line-up features five theatrical powerhouse productions never before seen on the Arts Center stage! We’re kicking our season off – and our heels up – for the highly-anticipated Kinky Boots, September 28 – October 31! With music by Cyndi Lauper, the uplifting musical tells the story of Charlie Price. Having inherited a shoe factory from his father, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with drag queen Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots with hopes of saving the business.

We were delighted to be granted the licensing rights to produce Lin Manuel Miranda’s brilliant musical In the Heights, May 3 – 29. With an exhilarating score of Latin rhythms, hip-hop, and soul, this Tony Award-winning musical — recently premiering as a musical-movie — tells what it means to chase your dreams as you celebrate your roots. Summertime at the Arts Center will rock you like a hurricane with Rock of Ages, June 28 – August 14. The iconic 80s music of groups like Styx, Twisted Sister, and Journey propels this high energy hit of love and rock ‘n roll on the Sunset Strip.

The entire family will love our holiday selection, Elf, The Musical, December 7, 2021 – January 2, 2022. This hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity. Amazing music, big dance numbers, and a whole lot of Christmas spirit is what Elf is all about!

The rest of our calendar year is filled with world-class “Great Performances” including comedy, dance, music, not to mention our free community festivals, field trips, workshops, summer camps and so much more!

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, February 1 – 20, is one of the most visually dazzling plays you’ll see! It’s a life-affirming adventure into the extraordinarily unconventional mind of 15-year old Christopher, as he seeks to solve a mysterious crime. Awarded the Tony for Best Play, and based on the best-selling novel, this thought-provoking show is a must-see.

Clicquot

Signature Event

A REVOLUTIONARY MUSICAL IN CONCERT!

The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and 35th Parallel Productions are thrilled to present Clicquot, A Revolutionary Musical in Concert on November 5 and 6 at 7:30pm. This Signature Event of Crescendo brings film, television, and Broadway stars Judy McLane, Paolo Montalban, Steve Blanchard, Victoria Frings and more in a two-night only concert on the Arts Center stage. This is a rare opportunity for Lowcountry audiences to enjoy a taste of this sweeping and timeless score before it makes its way to Broadway. Clicquot shines a light on the remarkable Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin who defied the status quo and changed the rules for women in business, leaving behind an indelible entrepreneurial legacy. Clicquot – in its entirety – is set in the wake of the French Revolution, and centers around Barbe-Nicole. The musical opens at the dawn of the French Revolution when a young and tenacious Barbe-Nicole is pulled away from her elite boarding school by the family dressmaker. Ten years later, Barbe-Nicole dreams of taking charge of her father’s business, but n o a m ou nt of talent nor passion would allow a woman into the business world at the turn of the 19th century.

Instead, she must enter into a marriage with Francois Clicquot, arranged by their fathers. Against all odds, she and Francois fall madly in love and become co-creators of Clicquot Wines — later known as Veuve Clicquot. Barbe-Nicole enjoyed an aristocratic life, but when her beloved Francois died unexpectedly, she must lead the company her husband started, launching a career in spite of the political turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars and the misogyny she faced at every turn. Many colorful, historical figures join Barbe-Nicole on her journey — for better or for worse — including Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and Jean-Remy Moet of the legendary Moët & Chandon wines. Today, Veuve Clicquot is celebrated as one of the world’s greatest Champagne houses and most iconic brands, accolades attributed to the bravery, audacity, and talent of Barbe Nicole.

The concertized version of the musical, featuring many of the show’s epic songs, sung by legends of Broadway, will include a talk-back with the performers, producers, and of course, champagne! $53/person, get tickets for this sparkling opportunity at tickets.artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-ARTS 2787.

Gullah Days

HILTON HEAD ISLAND BEFORE THE BRIDGE

Nowhere more prominently than on Hilton Head Island has the Gullah culture been protected and revered. Descendants of the first generations of Gullah families continue to preserve the language, customs, arts, and cuisine. Native Islanders and co-authors Thomas C. Barnwell, Jr., Emory S. Campbell, PhD, and Carolyn Grant have chronicled this unique history in their comprehensive 361-page book, Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956. This collaboration spanned 20 years, with a shared commitment to telling the story of their ancestors. “Knowing we are passing this history on to the future generations is invaluable," says Barnwell. Gullah Days is divided into Part One: Gullah History Before the Bridge and Part Two: Gullah Culture and Collected Memories. The book explains how the Gullah language originated: “…the Africans and their descendants cobbled together a common tongue. The quick, abrupt Gullah way of talking was based on English but punctuated with African words, grammar, structure, and flair.” Prior to Union Army General Ormsby M. Mitchel’s arrival in the fall of 1862, which led to the creation of the first self-governing community of formerly enslaved people, the First African Baptist Church had already been established. This church, which welcomes worshipers to this day, is one example of the remaining historical structures included in the Town’s Office of Cultural Affairs’ Culture Trail. If you’re looking for Gullah history here, it is found in quiet, residential areas - not perched on pedestals.

Thomas C. Barnwell, Jr., Emory S. Campbell, PhD, and Carolyn Grant | Photograhpy by Rob Kaufman

"The story of our ancestors lay hidden for many years. We wanted to capture it, share it, and give readers and Gullah descendants a view of how our lives evolved," says Grant. Gullah Days leaves readers with a profound understanding of the recent history and Gullah culture of Hilton Head Island.

Gullah Days can be purchased through major online retailers. Area retailers include Barnes & Noble, By Hand Ink, Coastal Discovery Museum, Grayco Hardware, Pretty Papers, Sonesta Resort, Skull Creek Dockside, & Harbour Town Lighthouse.

GREAT PERFORMANCES

The Music of Aretha Franklin

A TRIBUTE BY CANDICE GLOVER

American Idol-winner Candice Glover brings the music of Aretha Franklin to life in this incredible tribute you won’t want to miss, at the Arts Center November 11 & 12. This concert celebrates two unbelievable stars: one made music history as “The Queen of Soul” and has influenced fifty years of Black women in music, and one is a modern-day “Idol,” who continues to induce chills with her impassioned performances today. Aretha Franklin was born into a musical family. She toured with her father's traveling revival show and later visited New York, where she signed with Columbia Records in 1960. After that, she went on to write several smash hits, earning her place as the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Her astonishing career spanned over several decades, appearing on the billboard pop charts over 70 times and winning 18 Grammys, making her one of the most honored artists in history. It is impossible to measure the impact Aretha Franklin has had on American popular music and culture, but her enduring influence on today’s performers — like Candice Glover — is seen in their desire to capture the emotional and vocal range of this legend. Candice Glover, who is a native of neighboring Beaufort, South Carolina, began singing in her church, where her father was a pastor. The R&B and gospel vocalist is best known as the winner of the 12th season of reality

vocal competition American Idol. Three times proved to be quite the charm for Candice, who auditioned to be on the show two times before finally making the cut. On May 16, 2013 Glover won first place in the competition, bringing the audience to tears with her powerful, yet seemingly effortless vocals. Candice, in her inimitable way, will pay homage to the Queen of Soul with an incredible set list of Aretha’s greatest hits including “Respect,” “Think,” “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman,” “Say a Little Prayer,” “Chain of Fools,” and so many more.

Tickets are $56 and may be purchased by visiting artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842–ARTS 2787.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND LANTERN PARADE

The Office of Cultural Affairs for the Town of Hilton Head Island is pleased to announce the third annual Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade to be held on Saturday, November 13 at 5:45 p.m. on South Forest Beach. Created by and featuring artist Chantelle Rytter, the Lantern Parade is a free event and an opportunity for residents and visitors to celebrate the history, ecology and people of Hilton Head Island. Everyone is invited to make a lantern and march in the parade, a marquee event for “Crescendo,” a monthlong celebration of arts and culture presented by the Arts Council of Hilton Head. Lineup for the parade begins at 5 p.m. at the Alder Lane Beach Access. At 5:45 p.m., the parade will begin and travel from South Forest Beach to Coligny Beach Park. The official afterparty will be hosted at the Tiki Hut, featuring the local band Groove Town Assault. “The parade will bring all aspects of our community together and illuminate Hilton Head Island’s identity,” said Jenn McEwen, Director of Cultural Affairs. “This event is a perfect community connector because it is accessible to all ages and skill levels. During the inaugural parade, we saw incredible creations including a shrimp trawler, alligators, dolphins, lighthouses and more.” Participants must have a lantern to walk in the parade. See info on this page about our Lantern Making Workshop! There will also be a drive-thru puppet safari on Friday, November 12, from 6 to 8 pm at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park.

Everyone is invited to drivethru and see the glowing, largescale lantern puppets up close from their car. A perfect evening would be the drive-thru safari followed by Candice Glover Singing Aretha Franklin at the Arts Center (see page 25)! What a night of entertainment!
