CASSADEE POPE Cassadee Pope is a powerful singer with a bent toward both pop and country. Pope’s music is “sweet and vulnerable,” “confident and sexy,” and her powerhouse voice, inimitable presence, and endless charm transformed her into a force of nature beloved by millions worldwide. Following her victory on season three of NBC’s The Voice, her 2013 full-length debut, Frame by Frame, reached number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums Chart and in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 all-genre chart. In 2017 Pope received a Grammy nomination for best country duo performance (with Chris Young) for Think of You, and she has toured with Tim McGraw, Dierks Bentley, and Rascal Flatts. In addition to touring and recording, in 2018 Pope returned to The Voice as an advisor to coach Kelly Clarkson’s team.

Blacksburg band J-Stout & the MIX will open for Pope.

PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY PABLO ZIEGLER ENSEMBLE Piazzolla Caldera and other repertory

Celebrate the opening of our season with two greats, Paul Taylor and Pablo Ziegler, who join forces for this passionate performance. Taylor is an American titan of modern dance, a soloist with Martha Graham and George Balanchine, who has led the dance world through his own choreography since 1954. Fresh from his 2018 Grammy win for Best Latin Jazz Album, Argentine pianist Ziegler realized his own tango visions after touring the world with tango grand-maestro Astor Piazzolla’s quintet for over a decade. Ziegler’s quintet moves the nuevo tango tradition into fresh territory in the program’s opening set, followed by repertory from the Paul Taylor dancers and culminating with their combined Piazzolla Caldera. Taylor’s poetic masterwork exploring tango’s sultry, raging essence springs to life with live music provided by Ziegler.

ITZHAK PERLMAN, violin ROHAN DE SILVA, piano Undeniably the reigning virtuoso of the violin, Itzhak Perlman enjoys superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician.

Born in Israel in 1945, Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. An early recipient of an America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship, he came to New York and soon propelled to national recognition with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. He has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, a Kennedy Center Honor in 2003, the National Medal of Arts in 2000, and a Medal of Liberty in 1986. Longtime collaborator Rohan de Silva has performed with Perlman and other violin greats in venues and festivals around the world.

La Golondrina: A Musical Journey from Latin America to New York City Open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade in public, private, and homeschools connected to the Virginia Standards of Learning Born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, Sonia De Los Santos shares songs that reflect on her experiences growing up in Mexico, moving to another country, learning about other cultures, and in the process, feeling closer to her own heritage. This unique concert is filled with original songs, Latin American party tunes, and new bilingual versions of American classics, making it a personal, and yet universal, musical story from a soulful and important voice in family music. Messages of joyful community music-making and cultural bridge building will inspire and excite children and grownups of all backgrounds.

EL SEPTETO SANTIAGUERO The Cuban ensemble El Septeto Santiaguero infuses an adventurous streak into the traditional son music of its native Santiago de Cuba. Before winning the 2015 Latin Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Album and sparking collaborations with salsa stars like José Alberto (“El Canario”) and Rubén Blades, the seven captivating performers honed their sound at the famous Casa de la Trova nightclub, cultivating an infectious call-and-response style that heats up dance floors wherever they go.

AMBIENT ORCHESTRA David Bowie’s Blackstar

Evan Ziporyn, conductor Maya Beiser, cello Featuring musicians from Boston Conservatory at Berklee Composer and MIT professor Evan Ziporyn formed the Ambient Orchestra in the wake of David Bowie’s death to perform a tribute concert. This rendition of Bowie’s swan song album, Blackstar—which was released on the singer’s 69th birthday and just two days before he died—stays true to and amplifies Bowie’s themes of transformation. The program features cellist Maya Beiser, who collaborated with Ziporyn to re-imagine Bowie’s complete final album as a cello concerto. Beiser has reinvented solo cello performance in the mainstream classical arena and has performed on the world’s most prestigious stages. The Boston Globe declares, “With virtuoso chops, rock star charisma, and an appetite for pushing her instrument to the edge of avant-garde adventurousness, Maya Beiser is the post-modern diva of the cello,” while Rolling Stone calls her a “cello rock star.”

LES VIOLONS DU ROY Handel/Glass Vocal Program

Jonathan Cohen, music director Anthony Roth Costanzo, countertenor This vocal music concert contrasts Handel’s exquisite baroque music and electrifying vocal works by Philip Glass. The performance features the 15-member Les Violons du Roy and countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo. Taking its name from the renowned string orchestra of the court of the French kings, Les Violons du Roy specializes in the vast repertoire of music for chamber orchestra, performed in the stylistic manner most appropriate to each era. Costanzo began performing professionally at the age of 11 and has appeared since in opera, concert, recital, film, and on Broadway. According to Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil, “Costanzo and the Violons du Roy have offered a unique, refined and explosive concert….

Their sublime interpretation of Handel’s music and galvanizing works of Philip Glass gave us a tingling in the chest. We felt them resonate long after we left the concert hall.”

Dedicated to the creation and performance of innovative contemporary dance works from established and emerging dance-makers, NW Dance Project brings a program that will feature a selection of company repertoire, including Le Fil Rouge and Sarah Slipper’s Woolf Papers, a provocative and deeply moving reinvention of Virginia Woolf’s classic novel Mrs. Dalloway. Founded in 2004 by acclaimed dancer, mentor, and choreographer Sarah Slipper in Portland, the company has fostered the creation and Portland premiere of over 190 original contemporary dance works to date. Dance International Magazine noted that NW Dance Project has become “a laboratory, factory, and repository for risk-taking new works from the next generation of choreographers from Europe and North America.”

The Moss Arts Center marks its fifth anniversary with a special gala reception and an extraordinary performance. The opera world lost a legend with the death of Maria Callas in 1977. Her exquisite voice and performances astounded audiences, and her loss devastated millions of fans, many of whom never had the chance to see her perform live. Now Callas returns to the stage through groundbreaking holographic technology, confirming her immortality to fans all over the world. Callas in Concert brings the beloved soprano to the Moss Arts Center to perform with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra in this extraordinary melding of art and technology. Fully remastered recordings of her most iconic performances of Bellini, Bizet, Verdi, and Puccini come to life as she sings them before your eyes. Experience her rapturous voice and timeless beauty, and the legendary emotional force that is Maria Callas as she inhabits her characters and evokes the drama that inspired the world to call her “La Divina.�

Escape Ten Percussion Duo Otu Kojo and the West African Drumming Ensemble Virginia Tech Percussion Ensemble This School of Performing Arts performance features an eclectic combination of percussion artists and ensembles. Along with performances by the award-winning Virginia Tech Percussion Ensemble, the evening features Escape Ten (Annie Stevens and Andrea Venet) presenting their vibrant works for percussion duo and joining the Virginia Tech Percussion Ensemble on Emmanuel Sejourne’s Double Concerto. The performance also features Otu Kojo of Ghana, West Africa, who leads the Virginia Tech West African Drumming Ensemble.

The Nature of Forgetting

Conceived and directed by Guillaume Pigé Born at the intersection of art and science, The Nature of Forgetting bursts with creativity, joy, and heartache. Theatre Re collaborated with London neuroscientist Kate Jeffery to create a moving articulation of the countless dimensions of memory and amnesia, linking science with real life experiences. Through physical theatre and compelling live music, The Nature of Forgetting tells the story of Tom, a middle-aged father struggling in the early stages of dementia. The piece, and Tom’s memories, are a life-affirming journey into a weakened mind, where broken does not have to mean defeated. It is a journey of shining humanity and the celebration of a life well lived. The Nature of Forgetting premiered in January 2017 at the London International Mime Festival and ran to acclaim in August 2017 at the Edinburgh Fringe.

This engagement of Theatre Re is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Martha Redbone is one of the most vital voices in American Roots music. A multi award-winning musician, she is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music, embodying the folk and country sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in Brooklyn. With her gospel-singing father’s voice and the spirit of her Cherokee/Shawnee/Choctaw mother’s culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of Americana, embracing folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul, and traditional American Indian music. Her latest album, The Garden of Love—Songs of William Blake, was produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder John McEuen, and her album Skintalk is recognized as an example of contemporary Native American music in the permanent library collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. She was awarded a National Artist Fellowship in 2015 by the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation.

SOUNDS OF CHINA Ma Jiuyue, composer and director Led by composer Ma Jiuyue, Sounds of China is a highly polished ensemble from Beijing that blends traditional Chinese music with forward-looking arrangements, mixing the ancient and the modern. While the group incorporates plenty of traditional instruments, Jiuyue’s arrangements recast the ancient melodies into thoroughly contemporary, rock-oriented settings with electric guitar, synthesizers, and a standard drum kit, giving the performances a pop-like energy and sheen. The ensemble features some of China’s greatest musicians from both the classical world and the pop realm. Jiuyue incorporates a wide variety of ideas, mixing in bits of new age, pop, progressive rock, jazz, and cinematic grandeur.

When the ashes of a legendary social activist and feisty grandmother demand to be laid to rest, the trio head off on a transformative journey between the past and present, the real and imagined, Scottish highlands and Appalachian mountains, in search of a fitting ending.

In 2016 the artists spent two weeks in residence at Virginia Tech, meeting with people throughout the New River Valley to learn about the cultural and political legacy of the Scots and Scotch-Irish in the area. This research helped shape this performance, which features a throbbing score by award-winning duo the Bengsons that mixes the Scottish-American folk tradition with stomping punk and the TEAM’s trademark athletic performance style.

Harry Burleigh (1866-1949) is a forgotten hero of American music. Antonin Dvořák’s assistant in New York City from 1892 to 1895, Burleigh was subsequently the composer and singer most responsible for turning spirituals into art songs. His Deep River (1915), a sensation in its day, took an obscure upbeat spiritual and turned it into the reverent song made famous by Burleigh, Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson, and countless others. This program delves deeper into Burleigh’s impact. Angel Gil-Ordóñez and Joseph Horowitz founded PostClassical Ensemble (PCE) in 2003 as an experimental orchestral laboratory committed to radically rethinking the concert experience and to refreshing both format and repertoire. They lift up works deserving greater advocacy, believing that music of consequence should be contextualized in new spaces for audiences, old and new, in search of deeper paths of engagement both intellectual and spiritual. As of fall 2017, PCE is the ensemble in residence at the Washington National Cathedral.

Halfway to Dawn

David Roussève’s latest work is a blend of dance, music, video, text, theatre, and visual design that seeks to redefine biography and find the truth of the life of composer Billy Strayhorn.

As Duke Ellington’s main arranger and writing collaborator, Strayhorn (1915-1967) wrote or co-wrote Ellington signatures Take the A Train, Satin Doll, Something to Live For, and Rain Check. Being gay, out, and living in Harlem in the 1940s to 1960s, however, he never received full credit for his work. He chose instead to lead a remarkably private life, whether by choice or, as suggested by biographer David Hadju, because he knew that the larger public would not be as accepting of his sexual identity as was the Ellington extended family.

Choreographer, writer, director, and filmmaker Roussève founded the dance-theatre company REALITY in 1988.

TERRY TEMPEST WILLIAMS author, environmentalist, and activist Terry Tempest Williams has been called “a citizen writer,” a writer who speaks and speaks out eloquently on behalf of an ethical stance toward life. A naturalist and fierce advocate for freedom of speech, she has consistently shown us how environmental issues are social issues that ultimately become matters of justice. Known for her impassioned and lyrical prose, Williams is the author of environmental literature classic Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place, Finding Beauty in a Broken World, and When Women Were Birds, among others. Her most recent book, The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks, honors the centennial of the National Park Service and is a New York Times best seller. Among many awards, she is the recipient of a Lannan Literary Fellowship and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in creative nonfiction. In 2014, on the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, she received the Sierra Club’s John Muir Award honoring a distinguished record of leadership in American conservation. Williams also received the 2017 Audubon New York Award for Environmental Writing.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Richard Tognetti, artistic director Inon Barnatan, piano Internationally renowned for inspired programming and the rapturous response of audiences and critics, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) returns to the Moss Arts Center for their second visit. The ACO’s unique artistic style encompasses both the masterworks of the classical repertoire and innovative cross-art form projects and a vigorous commissioning program.

Richard Tognetti became artistic director and lead violin in 1989.

Under his inspiring leadership, the ACO has performed as a flexible and versatile ensemble of soloists, on modern and period instruments, as a small chamber group, as a small symphony orchestra, and as an electro-acoustic collective. Their program will include a new work by Samuel Adams, premiering on this tour, and Mozart’s Piano Concerto, no. 12 in A Major, featuring Inon Barnatan on piano. Barnatan, celebrated for his poetic sensibility, musical intelligence, and consummate artistry, recently completed his third season as the first artist in association of the New York Philharmonic.

Music by Fred Hersch Words by Walt Whitman Jazz composer and pianist Fred Hersch’s Leaves of Grass premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2005. It celebrates the life and poetry of the American bard Walt Whitman, whose work redefined American poetry and had a significant, life-affirming impact on Hersch. Led by Hersch on piano, an eight-piece ensemble evokes sweeping melodicism, while vocalists Kurt Elling and Kate McGarry present Whitman’s words with grace, emotion, and lyrical sweetness. It has been over 160 years since Whitman wrote his epic masterwork, Song of Myself, the centerpiece of Hersch’s Leaves of Grass, and its messages seemed almost alien to society at the time. Now, its promotion of unapologetic love for one’s true self, appreciation of the present, wonder at the miracle of nature, and the openhearted love of all beings is especially timely and important. It is a powerful experience to witness this profound poetry spun into song by one of today’s leading musical visionaries.

Shadowland 2: The New Adventure In the more than 40 years since its beginnings as a dance class assignment at Dartmouth College, Pilobolus has performed on Broadway, at the Oscars, and at the Olympic games; appeared on television and in movies, advertisements, schools, and businesses; and has created more than 120 dance works seen around the world. Pilobolus’ new evening-length show, Shadowland 2: The New Adventure, tells a love story about two people and their quixotic quest to save an imaginary bird.

Developed in collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePants lead writer Steven Banks, the production uses animation, video, and shadow-theatre for an adventure that dips its toes into the genres of science fiction, film noir, and romantic comedy. With Pilobolus’s acrobatic movement, the humor of cartoons, and the heart of a love story, Shadowland 2 celebrates the power of dreams to help us discover who we’re born to be.

Visitors can park in the Virginia Tech faculty/staff street parking spaces and lots after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and at any time on weekends. A limited number of accessible parking spaces are available in front of the Moss Arts Center at both the Alumni Mall and Turner Street entrances.
