Dear Audience Members,
Welcome to Sunday Dinner at the Denouements, a tragicomedy devised by senior theatre majors in their capstone course, Ensemble Experiments. This play deals head-on with class struggles, corporate greed that causes illness and death, wealthy family dysfunction, and cruelty in the face of real pain. The themes in this play, in particular incest and domestic violence through verbal abuse, could be activating to some in the audience. The firearm on stage is fake and made entirely of foam.
Since the beginning of spring semester, eleven students have participated in conceptualizing, writing, and now presenting this play in its completed form. All students contributed to imagining the characters, plot, and themes, and writing scenes until mid-semester when three of them entered the process of editing, reassembling, synthesizing, and refining the play you see tonight.
While the students started out wanting to be in a writers’ room, eventually it became clear that fewer writers would help the process move more swiftly to rehearsals with two primary directors and nearly everyone acting. Those students working more behind the scenes have executed set, costume, prop, and lighting design, are stage managing, and generally keeping this ship afloat.
In facilitating these students’ creative process, I witnessed many new developments and I am amazed by this final play, which earns its shocking moments with emotional substance and dramatic cohesion.
Sincerely,

Charlotte Meehan
